Exploring SR 20 - North Cascades Highway - Conquest Overland

- It was the opening weekend of SR 20, the famous highway that runs through the North Cascades National Park. Road crews of the Washington State Department of Transportation were able to clear the road earlier than anticipated this year which brought on our search of adventure. Follow along to see where this famous road lead us!

I'm chuffed, good find, loving these vids. I am SOOOO into geology thanks to a teacher called Nick Zentner who works at CWU, and lives in Ellensburgh and streams on RUclips. He is an excellent teacher and has opened up a whole new world to me called the Pacific Northwest. So now my one goal in life would be to come over and see for myself. When you visit (not if!) you'll absolutely love it, just be sure to have plenty of time scheduled to witness all the great spots. Even better is that here in Washington State we have three National Parks, this could provide some great application with your geology!

One of favorite trips in Northwest Washington. Doesn't help that I live in Oak Harbor and have easy access to it.

Methow Valley is the best! We are so blessed here in Washington with such great landscapes and all varying it is the best! I just did North Fork RD in the Snoqualmie and North Bend area this past weekend and it was great. Highly recommend it!
Couldn't agree more! The Pacific Northwest is simply incredible! I'll definitely check that place out on our next trip. There numerous areas within Snoqualmie that are on my to-see list!

Great stuff! RT20 and Washington Pass are one of my favorite routes.
They are certainly amazing! I'd love to get further north on a routine basis but it's a bit difficult on a 48 hour weekend schedule... I'll get back there soon enough though!
@@ConquestOverland The only way to make it work is to head out mid day Friday at the latest or do a 3 day weekend.

brucehawk09 we actually had a trip planned to Utah about 3 weeks ago but unfortunately with everything going on had to cancel it. Hope to get back out there next year, just gives me more time to prep the rig for trails 😉👍🏼

Hey Fernando! Thank you so much for the kind words, really appreciate it! As for the facilities, there are several at the Diablo Lake lookout. In addition there are numerous campgrounds along highway 20 which you could stop at as well. Key is planning so you’ll be all set! Haha. Enjoy the views and have fun! 👊🏼

What is the weather like in mid September? We are planning a journey through those sacred Indigenous lands, from Saskatchewan, Canada.
Typically much cooler (mid to low 60s), more overcast, and higher chances of rain though the mountains around here often make their own weather forecasts so it can change at any moment 😉 👍

Thank you! It can certainly get tricky with oncoming vehicles, usually one just moves to the side allowing the other to pass or in the worst case, backing up to a suitable and safe area to do so.

Roads will be clear but expect snow at higher passes until the middle of July in most years.

Thank you! It was Harts Pass, we simply came a bit too early in the season to tackle that one...
Awesome video! I'm just curious that how did you get to pass the incoming traffic on the trails like shown at 18:00 in the video?
Thank you very much! Good question to ask. Most of the trails are just wide enough to allow you to drive partial on the shoulder for another vehicle to pass. This isn't always the case though. Other times one will need to backup to the nearest and safest place to allow traffic by. This then depends on number of vehicles in convoy as well as right of way at the time. Can get a little tricker in some situations!

I generally use a mix between Google Maps and Gaia Maps with various overlays. Typically try and find public land with open forest roads and just go from there. Some are hits and some are misses, but you discover all new areas with each trip. I also even just search general known trails and see what else is nearby.
Google Earth is also your best friend with an overview of the landscape. But it just boils down to getting out and discovering by trial and error haha.

It was along Methow River, just outside the National Park. Lot of great camping opportunities!
