This is the most atmospheric track in the game, you’re in a ancient place deep in Angel Island, getting close to the Death Egg, while also finding out the great history of Knuckles, and how he protects the greatest relic. This game was 16-Bit and had good story telling.
I never really thought about this place being underneath angel island 🤔 I always assumed it was just in the middle of nowhere underneath sandopolis because that's where you were last
I made 2 shirts with the logos, one blue with red logo and one red with blue logo 😎 I love the logo too, by far one of the coolest logos Sega has come up with.
Well now you'll be able to listen to the SAME soundtrack as it was back then... with SONIC ORIGINS, coming this June 23rd to PlayStation 4 and 5, XBOX ONE and SERIES X/S, Nintendo Switch, Steam and Epic Games in BOTH 4:3 AND 16:9 WIDESCREEN (With the latter removing Lives and Time Limits). @@AstroTomI didn't play that one until later, but you're right. Great stuff. I even played through Chaotix recently! I could never make myself finish 3D or Spinball though. lol
Lava Reef has always been kinda emotional for me both in S&K and Mania. In S&K its the turning point for the story were we find out about the story of the Echidna Tribe and Knuckles's job to protect the Master Emerald despite being one of the last of his tribe. He learns about doctor eggman and him stealing the master emerald. There is an act of suspence like what will we do now that Eggman has fixed the Death Egg? In Mania it feels like we are about to get back to Little Planet and stop Robotnik and we don't know what will await us in metallic madness. This is the last stop on our journey before little planet and we must get ready! IDK this zone is amazing tho.
You don't learn anything about any Echidna tribe there, though... It's just a palace with the master emerald hidden in it and a prophecy that essentially foretold Eggman taking the emerald and Sonic fighting against him. The echidna tribe lore started getting featured only after at least Sonic Adventure.
Regardless, this zone on its own, especially Act 2, makes me very emotional. I tend to just stop where there's no enemies, sound effects, or flames, and just listen to the music. This is just a very beautiful track, and for running on hardware from 1988, this is just perfect.
Also used for Hidden Palace Zone. For the life of me, though, I have never been able to defeat Lava Reef Zone in order to make it to the Hidden Palace, let alone Sky Sanctuary.
This theme has a climactic feeling for me, because in my playthroughs any time I got to this actI knew I only had a few more chances to get the super emeralds. This always makes me remember how under pressure I would be to try to find any big ring I could before it was too late, and I’ll always love this theme for that reason.
So I have to say, hearing this track in the Hidden Palace whenever you’d enter a giant ring, then it being the track to Lava Reef 2…did anyone else have their first childhood moment of like, lore geography? Like this track kicks in and you go, “oh my god, I’m almost to the place where the emeralds are!” And there’s this anticipation and excitement and you really feel the story building and coming together. It was awesome.
when I first played this level I thought it might be the last level because of how it felt. I also thought I might be dreaming because of the relaxed state it put my mind in. an absolute one-of-a-kind game right here.
Son: Dad can you tell me a bed time story? Me: of course. So there was once a Echidna named knuckles... *Hidden place/lava reef act 2 theme intensefies*
This changed my entire outlook on Sonic. This level got me extremely into sonic because of how different it was. If it werent for this game, I'd never get into Sonic like this.
Lyrics: woah this lava has frozen? Wow running through the caves time to finally beat knuckles and teach him a lesson to not mess with the blue blur oh look i see knuckles * runs to him *
Way different than first act, but so good it doesnt matter. Just a continuation. This approach makes me wonder what could have been done with some of the other zones.
Lava Reef Act 2, especially seeing the Death Egg in the crater and right before it gets to launch and Eggman uses the eyes to spark the lava flow again!
After Act 1, Lava Reef Zone Was No Longer Burning. it Now Changed to Cold! Pooh and Tigger Must Travel from This Act to Hidden Palace Zone to See What Zummi Was Up to!
Am I the only one that prefers this over the Mania version? This one just seems calm and atmospheric for a place where the ultimate source of power holds. The Mania version's electric guitar just screams at your face and is just in my opinion, very annoying for an "angelic" zone

The most beautiful stage from classic sonic.

One of the best location play in the game. I swear people who made music for this game was on a whole other level

So melancholy, yet mysterious and adventurous. One of my favorite tracks from the classic era.

people say this is entirely different from act 1, but theres that same descending underlayed melody heard in act 1.

“Finally Coolness…but knuckles is back”
So the big question: Which stage do you associate this theme with more, Lava Reef Act 2 or Hidden Palace? Count me as part of Team Hidden Palace.
Lava Reef Act 2, especially seeing the Death Egg in the crater and right before it gets to launch and Eggman uses the eyes to spark the lava flow again!
Hidden Palace.
lava reef
I’d consider this Hidden Palace Act 1 and Lava Reef is just a single act Zone imo.
Hidden zone music

The boss on act 2 was way too hard for me.
