  • Microsoft technical support scams are a common way for scammers to steal personal and financial information from unsuspecting victims. In this video, Julie calls a reported scam number and shows how you can navigate a similar situation safely. After, she discusses how these scams work, how to spot them, and how to protect yourself.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft technical support, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself:
    - Don't give out any personal information. Scammers will often ask for your credit card number, Social Security number, or other personal information. Do not give out any of this information to someone you do not know and trust.
    - Hang up the phone. If you are suspicious of the caller, simply hang up the phone. You can always call Microsoft back on a number you know is legitimate.
    - Check the caller ID. Scammers may spoof the caller ID to make it look like they are calling from a legitimate Microsoft number. However, you can always check the caller ID to make sure it is legitimate.
    - Beware of pop-up messages. Scammers may also try to trick you into clicking on a pop-up message that claims to be from Microsoft. Do not click on any pop-up messages that you are not sure about.
    - Do your research at BBB.org. BBB has an extensive database full of accurate business information, so you can double check to see if a phone number or address doesn't match up. You can also find helpful resources like this one: www.bbb.org/ar...
If you think you have been scammed by Microsoft technical support, there are a few things you can do:
    - Change your passwords IMMEDIATELY. Scammers may have gained access to your personal information, so it is important to change your passwords for all of your online accounts.
    - Report the scam to Microsoft. You can report the scam to Microsoft by going to their website and filing a report.
    - File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC can help to investigate and prosecute scammers. You can file a complaint with the FTC online or by mail.
    - Report the scam to BBB Scam Tracker: BBB.org/ScamTracker

Hi Julie …nice to see some more scammer videos. It would be really cool if BBB participated in the people’s call center next year with Scammer Payback. It can be scary to get one of these pop-ups which make your computer unresponsive, especially as they usually include a warning not to restart your computer. When this happened to me, I was shocked but I realised it was a scam and I did not phone the number. Instead I held down the power button to turn off the computer. When I turned it back on later the pop-up had disappeared and everything was working normally again.

    • @nononsenseBennett

Yes. Just turn off the computer, restart. If it doesn't fix it, keep doing that. Eventually it will unlock and the computer will work again. These sites should be sued for harassment and time wasted by its victims.

If you do connect to these scammers just removing the 1st ultraviewer or anydesk, does not guarantee that the scammers do not still have access to your computer, and unless you are computer savvy, you will still need to take your computer to a reputable computer shop.

What you do after you ask where they are located and they give you a bogus answer, you ask them *what time it is* where they are now. And have them answer quickly. You'll either get a frantic answer or a hangup right at that point. Also, when you are done with the scammers, ALWAYS make them hang up first. That way the call costs them money, which won't happen if you hang up first.

Good grief. You just turned something innocent (that my fiancé and I both laughed at by the way) into something disgusting and sinister. I would never cheat on her.
She has the biggest crush on George Clooney, but just because she finds him attractive doesn’t mean that “her eyes are starting to wonder.”
We do not disrespect each other. I love my fiancé so much. We were supposed to have been married in July of 2019. Unfortunately, we had two horrible things happen. She lost her little sister in a terrible accident.
The same year, I was relieved to have been qualified as a donor of bone marrow that would save my beautiful fiancé’s life.
I literally would have given my heart to her if that’s what it would have taken to save her life.
When she lost all of her hair, and weighed only 92lbs, I was there every day and night after work.
      You know nothing about us.
You can say we live a sinful life all you want. I am the most fortunate man in the world.
Just because she thinks George Clooney is cute doesn’t take anything away from how she views me.
How dare you go around judging people for innocent things.
So go ahead police the comments with your righteousness.
I did nothing disrespectful, nor would I ever. I hope you don’t do that to anyone again, because it’s not your place to judge people like that.
Even after that disgusting response, I forgive you. Maybe you’re just having a bad day.
If you’re really this way outside of the internet, and if you have a partner or are married; I hope you’re the only person they find attractive.
If your morals are that extreme, please let them know of your rule first. Everyone deserves to know that their man or woman must find them to be the ONLY attractive person in the entire planet.
This channel’s content does good things for its community and for places all over the world. The content is amazing, and my comment wasn’t that serious. Lighten up.
      Goodness.

They can't use your device if it has no connection to the internet. Depending on how far they got, just uninstalling anydesk or whatever they used to get initial access is not enough. But nothing that can't be fixed. Even if they changed your password, there are ways to get it back. Ask someone you trust to check the PC. Don't allow them to mess with you!

When taking an application for membership, there are very stringent criteria that have to be met in order to become a member. Also if a member breaks the rules they can be denied membership and taken off the rolls. That’s what happened to Mike Lindell, the My Pillow guy. I keep all of my files and downloads on portable and external hard drives. I keep only the programs on the PCs and maybe a few saves of something I am working on (with a backup on portable drives too). That way if something happens to a PC, all of my important data is on separate hard drives. Make sure you have a backup and be very careful with portable hard drives. They can be delicate, especially if dropped or handled roughly. In the old days, I would even burn some (data, photos, files, music) on CDs/DVDs as backups before the external and portable drives were able to handle larger files.
With all the scam baiters out there now, news, and documentaries available to everyone, I'm still shocked to find so many people still falling for these things. Romance, lottery, and computer scams are the most common, but there are so many other ways people can get cheated.

When they run the tree command, press enter a number of times and type tree and press enter. This will make the tree command run again and you can keep doing this for as long as you want, then their stupid messages won't appear.

Unfortunately, they will probably eventually lock your keyboard and mouse input. Never let them connect to your computer, and if someone does, you can always disconnect your internet to break the connection and immediately uninstall the remote sharing software before you go back online.

The prevention against such inconveniences is relatively simple. you create a boot stick with rufus, the image you put on the stick is Hiren's Boot PE, which is a bootable Windows 10 from the stick with some tools like Macrium Reflect...which you should also install on your computer.
Then make sure that the system partition is clean, that is, with all the programs installed that you need.
Then use macrium reflect to create an image of the partitions needed to start the operating system, the selection is made automatically by Macrium Reflect when you select the appropriate option.
If the box is now contaminated, boot from the boot stick, start Macrium Reflect and restores the clean installation...done.
I always create new images as soon as something has changed in the system, I do this every day, it takes about a quarter of an hour (SSD) for my installation, about 100GB in total, and it's worth it to me.
    Thanks for Your good work!
P.S.: If for some reason the partition table of the boot disk has been damaged, additional measures are necessary to restore it. There are also tools for this on the Hiren's Boot PE.

Julie, thank you for your easy to follow conversation. This video was a bit longer than usual, but not tooooo long as to lose interest (I share them with an older relative). I have to say, when you started that counting clock of silence, I couldn't help but laugh out loud!

  • @ashtonm.3825

You're too nice. Try keeping them on the phone as long as you can. Pretend like you couldn't understand the number; you typed the wrong address; anything to keep it going. They need to transfer you as quick as possible to the person who's going to get into your computer and rip you off. So by keeping them on the line and messing with them, you are at least slowing them down from getting to the next person! I used to get these calls too....after a few pranks for some reason they don't call anymore! I guess my Windows PC is safe.....even though I don't use Windows....lol

The problem with these scammers is that they have a script, some wrote this for them because they have a very low grade of education, this scammergirl really believes she is from Microsoft but in real life they never heard of the real company, and also their Hindi accent most trigger us that they are not real ! Never let them f…….up your computer because they do not know what to do with it ! 😂

I think. the BBB should have a service that people can call to verify if a call is legit or not. Not everyone has family tech savvy enough to verify and sometimes, people just don't want to admit they may be involved in a scam.
Edit: wow - scammer verified that SHE was called by "Julie" and not the other way around. They are getting smarter. We've always told people that YOU initiate the call, never the other way round. Now, we have to tell people to VERiFY the number is a proper number and that is not as easy for many people.
