  • 1993 Breeders' Cup Classic
As Breeders' Cups go, it was a rather formful afternoon.
    And then came the Classic.
And with it, the hopes and dreams of thousands who placed a wager on the final Breeders' Cup race vanished as Arcangues blew past Bertrando in the stretch to win the $3-million race.
But despite, or perhaps because of, the monumental upset, spirits weren't down among the losers after the race. It was just one of those things. Who could have figured?
"I was looking forward to winning this race for the past month," said jockey Gary Stevens, who looked every bit the winner on Bertrando. "So I'm kind of surprised at my reaction, that I'm not upset. I would have been mad if my horse hadn't run the race he did. But my horse ran a great race. He gave everything he's got. He just got beat."
Even Bertrando's trainer, Bobby Frankel, who has been known to be a bit surly after a losing race, seemed resigned to the result.
"I'm really kind of in shock," said Frankel, who has not won with 22 Breeders' Cup entrants. "I guess it just wasn't meant to be. He ran great. I'm surprised that anybody was able to catch him. When Gary (Stevens) got off the horse he said, 'Where did that (son of a gun) come from?' and I had to say, 'I don't know.' I guess it just wasn't meant to be for me this year."
    Stevens thought Bertrando would win.

"Bailey was 0 for 3 that day at Santa Anita when he arrived in the paddock fro the Classic. He knew little about his mount. Two weeks earlier, Bailey did not even think he was going to ride in the race. His prospective mounts were alternates in what was surely going to be an overflow field. But, at the last moment, Bailey picked up the mount on a French import, Arcangues, when the jockey originally scheduled to ride that horse, mike Smith, instead opted for Devil his Due"

Shortly before the race went off, Arcangues' owner put an $80,000 win bet on his horse. Given the long odds, he got over a million back for the bet plus what he got from the purse. That horse paid for his retirement many times over.

I'll say this--the three guys who were doing the commentary were down at the track, and when the cameras came back on them after a commercial, they all had their backs to the camera because they were staring at the tote board. One of them was saying, "Did you see that? The odds? What's going on?" Live on tv. Brilliant moment.
Then they realized they were on live, turned around and tried explaining what was going on. The tote only went up to 99-1, and the horse paid off at 133-1, so perhaps the tote lit up like a pinball machine for a while.
Oddly, it's one of my favorite racing moments because it was so real.

I had heard from a source close to the Wilderstein's thatr Arcangues had a disk problem in his back and when Andre Fabre tried him on a flat, hard surface he blew away his work mate. Fabre had saddled Jolypha, a three year old filly, to run third behind A.P Indy and Pleasant Tap. Arcangues was better than Jolypha and there was no A.P. Indy in this field. It was the biggest score of my life. The exacta with Bertrando paid $1,800 for every deuce.

If you would have saw Jolypha run against AP Indy in the Classic you would know the class of Arcangues. Jolypha wasn't even close to as good as her stablemate Arcangues. If people knew the class horse he was, his odds would have been around 10-1 or lower.
