I've been using Frog Tape for twelve years. I walked into the business of painting, and my boss at the time was experimenting with tape vs freehand cut-in. I got so fast at applying the tape, eventually never going back to freehand trim work. I always caulk and paint trim seams before I paint walls. In fact, I once thought I invented the idea to seal the edges of the tape lines with caulk before cutting-in, before I learned that there were other great minds that thought like me. As a faster and less sticky alternative, I seal the tape edge by lightly swiping it with whatever paint I use on the trim and then spreading it with my finger tip to smooth it out. It dries fast and it's more forgiving when it's time to pull due to the thin membrane vs thickness of caulk. I'm surprised you didn't mention the 3M Edge lock tape. I find that the blue contrast is easier on my eyes. Yellow Frog tape does have the best release though - even on surfaces that have been painted within an hour.
When I painted the interior walls of my house(painted the bedrooms sliver tradition and living room and bathroom and hallways navaho white and base boards white)i used frog tape for the boarders and the ceiling and wow that tape gets the job done without stripping the paint off.Frog tape i😍it
Yo, I really truly don't get pro painters taping so much. Either me or my one and only partner will be the only ones touching the job, but the only time I even use tape is to attach plastic to something, or for edges on spraying sometimes. I can guide the paint straighter and faster than I can run the tape line, you must be one with the paint, guess I am the only one?
@@Rexmorgan687 it's just a matter of learning how to get right up.to.the edge without hitting it, I know that may sound like I'm over simplifying it. But that's it. I got put in situations where I may have to keep my edge 1/16th of an inch without hitting the wall over and over and over again.
Great video Chris! I've only used the frog tape a handful of times but it is definitely worth the money. Some stuff you mentioned I didn't know about the tape until i watched this video, so very handy to know. Thanks for the upload Chris, love your videos 👍👍
Tried to use frog tape as a kid but my dad swore by the absolute cheapest tape. I always noticed we spent a lot more time cutting in, and always had issues with the tape splintering as you called it, and other tape related issues like residues and all kinds of crap. When I saw the frog tape I asked why don't we use that. He said it was too expensive. Well what's more expensive, spending 3x longer on a prep and de masking plus extra time cutting in everything you just painted..... Or getting it all done in one shot with a tape roll that cast $7 versus $1? I think we know now.
I agree. The yellow tape is lighter and more flexible. Best of all, it is also translucent, which makes positioning easier, especially when wrapping the edges of moulding.
I just started painting less than 2 weeks ago, I had never painted before. My boss insists that tape isnt necessary, and ends up costing valuable time on the job. I now end up making cut lines in difficult spots like around door handles, and ofcourse it's taking me valuable time to navigate these small spaces, and I inevitably end up getting paint on things that I shouldn't, thus spending more time wiping the paint. Just curoius to know your opinion on this? Is my boss out to lunch about painters tape?
You need to learn how to freehand but on some things using tape is very important, best to have a roll of that frogtape in your bag for the areas that you know your not up to painting yet.your boss doesnt even need to know you used tape.
ThePa1nter When you are trying to achieve sharp lines there is more to it than using the correct tape, very important that you understand HOW TO TAPE. First of all you need a clean smooth surface when taping to achieve the best seal and eliminate bleed through. Frog tape is good but there are several good tapes out there that will work very well if applied properly. The truth is, taping is an art just like cutting in ceiling lines or accent walls, and if you don’t understand that you will have a mess on your hands when you pull your tape. Planning to do some videos to help people understand this, it’s difficult to try to explain without seeing it done. I agree, you do not have to tape everything but in many situations it is critical and very helpful with turning out a professional looking job.
Is the frog rape orange similar to the 3M orange premium? I order cases from Miller Paint. (NOT the same as HOME DEPOT ORANGE 3M pro grade, stuff sucks!!) Love that stuff, splinters sometimes in heat or over a week plus but can hold up in washington weather when needed.
You forgot to mention that green and blue frog tape great for more smooth type walls still wont work for textured walls .Thats when caulking trick comes into play with almost any tape! But i know you know this Keep up great videos
@@5ynthesizerpatel applying caulk on the edge of the tape, wipe as much off as you can (“sealing” the edge of the tape to prevent bleeding) then paint over caulk before it dries for a superb line. Remove tape before paint/caulk dries 👍
Will frog tape take paint away with it like masking tape does? I'm trying to separate paint so I can paint the wall because I don't have a steady hand?
Let me say this ... DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT put ANY frogtape on those fake laminate "hardwood" looking floors. It will take sections of the laminate off. Did it to me last week. Use the old fashion white tape. The chemicals from frogtape takes shit off the walls too. No not talking about frogtape and love using it, but if you are doing like cabinet jobs that will have the tape down for a few days, make sure to use the white tape on the walls and laminate. Maybe it's my bad luck or possibly because they didn't primer the walls I don't know. Frogtape is f'ing strong!

That is awesome!
Learned so much from your videos in this last year. Thanks so much boss, I no longer dread painting. 👍
Thank you for sharing and watching 🤙
How much did you get paint for this advert?

The package also protects the tape from dust/dirt that sticks to the exposed edges that transfers to the surfaces that you are painting
yep
I only use the yellow frog tape, Never had an issue
I've seen a lot of people wetting frog tape after they place it down, so you see a benefit if that or no??

@Nunya Business your mom's got an afro with a g-strap.
How do you paint baseboard trim without tape?

Why do you never mention yellow frog tape? IMO the best low tack tape for lines or masking hardwood floor
Great stuff just dont want to have to many options. Makes things to confusing.

I’ve had bad issues with the yellow. I Use the blue and green exclusively. Never seen the orange. I’ll be contacting my paint store ASAP.
Found out about frogtape through your channel a few years ago, I’ve never looked back. Cheers!
Good to hear!
I gotta agree with you, the better quality tape you can afford to use the better your lines are gonna be.
We use green frog tape to paint our R/C bodies!
Nice.
In what situations would beige tape be better than frog tape?
Hi Chris, how does the frog tape yellow fit in with the orange, blue, and green? Thanks for the great content Chris!

By using the green or blue frog tape do you still have to use silicone when you cut your baseboards or tape alone is good?
On smooth surfaces no

FrogTape yellow is easy release tape
Anyone know if you should use a very small brush for painting railings, or still a big one , the railings are about thumb thickness?
small
Two small brushes and two people, one on each side gets the best quality and fastest
Who's got the best prices on Frogtape blue and orange??
Sherwin Williams if you have a contractors account👍
