Here comes a long post but I beg of you non Brazilians to read it. For non Brazilians here goes the context: Rafinha is one of the pioneers of modern stand up in the country, and at the time was one of three hosts of the, at the time, the show that disrupted completely the format of tv comedy by always going as far as possible in provoking corrupt politicians with surprise interviews, doing very important stories about outrageous inequalities throughout the country and giving comics a platform to show their talent nation wide (being in a non cable network). The singer in question not only is married to a guy who is close to a ton of big companies, tv network owners, soccer club owners and agents, and all the ones responsible for putting money on these shows, but also the daughter of an idolized country singer, and always supported by the biggest communications empire in the country (Globo) which pretty much controls tv journalism as a whole and had in this particular show, the only ratings losses in all possible hours, days and such. The guy stood up for his right to freedom is speech but got no support from the show producers (due to popular support to the singer and threats from sponsors), the network got afraid of what Globo could do to them in branding hurtful strategies, his comic partners didn’t side with him claiming religious reasons, defending PC limits, and his co host was a personal friend of the singer’s husband. The rest is pretty much whats he said in the video. The guy got really screwed for at least some good 5 years by not being booked for stand up tours and even festivals he himself helped create and make popular. The general crowd in Brazil decided to really go against him due to media influence (even though he had previously made jokes way heavier, bolder and more controversial with most of them sharing all of it in social networks) and only recently he has been able to slowly get back on his feet by doing Netflix specials, his RUclips channel and some tour dates. Personally, I feel ashamed as a Brazilian that we get known for being really ignorant when it comes to free speech rights while having absurdly daily corruption scandals and even common citizens atitudes and not revolting against it. We were even able to elect a new president (which we had to for the last 16 years were ruled by the same party which was responsible for the biggest corruption cases of our modern history) that is clearly unqualified to even run a gift shop in a subway station, let alone a country as big and broke(n) like ours, not to mention already being linked to corruption scandals, possible ties to militia (police officers that, when off duty, join forces to profit from all trades from black market, to bribe slum citizens to provide them “safety”, control any form of services provided inside the slums, and to top it all frequently do hits by contract), defends torture practices done during our military dictatorship times, cuts a ton of civil rights, ignores the premise of a laic administration (being a radical Christian), to mention just a few things disclosed in only 2 months of presidency. Seeing Rafinha on JRE makes me really happy for him. Hopefully now he gets his rewards after very harsh times in his career. Sorry for the long post. But this case in particular really ticks me off.

As Rafinha said, if now his case is being used in law schools, it’s because most judges out there can’t and didn’t studied in depth the satirical aspects of moral judgments that despite said by comedians through jokes doesn’t mean at all that they’re judging any persona or group. Actually comedians are only putting themselves where most people(including the judges) prefered not to go.
So a heckler is harrassing a comedian on stage, he claps back and is forced to pay them? He should have counter sued for ruining his show and damaging his future.
It's not about being more or less angry, per se... it's more about the ability to be heard, and to express your views, even (especially) when unpopular. When you can't even vent, or argue your point, then the frustration of impotence starts buzzing in the brain. And when your words haven't been heard, that buzz starts whispering about taking _action._

I understand the point... I agree to both points...is sad to lose your personality and way of thinking but when you're a public person and can make your point to a lot of people, is little dangerous not filter what you say even if is a joke. I lived that problem in my house with my wife...I was happy to say whatever was in my mind...but she suffered a lot...at first to stop my mouth was terrible to me...to my personality but in a second moment I learned how to dose that and the peace in my house came back. I know this is an old interview, but it just popped up on my suggestions. I just discovered Rafinha on RUclips late last year. I'm 60 years old, a woman, and off all the stuff I've heard him make jokes about...I knew that in my generation, very few would be offended by them, but I KNEW in this current generation of cry babies who's feelings get hurt so easily, that he probably had a lot of hate directed at him. I'm very sad to hear that it even went as far as law suits...that he Lost! Unbelievable. Seriously, if I hear an off colored, misogynistic, joke... I don't get offended as a woman. It's freaking joke...get over it. And often those jokes, while sometimes stereotypical ....are funny, just because they are stereotypical and often stereotypes happen because they are based upon true patterns of behavior. :P
My wife is Brazilian from a weird rich intellectual family. Brazilians are crazy racists, crazy elitist, and just plain crazy. They are like a bad combination of spanish, german, african, italian, etc. with many of the worst traits of all these cultures mixed up into it. They're still cooler than Americans though.
@@jaderal I had to travel all over, and yes, Brazilian woman are pretty great. Doesn't make them not fucking crazy though. 12 years in, we only threaten divorce twice maybe three times a month.
I just wanna say that after this interview I´ve changed my whole idea over Rafinha. At first, following the trend, I really thought he was a bastard. After the podcast I realized that social media has a deep impact in our minds, making us believe in things in such a way that we overwhelmingly react to mundane stuff. Mistakes that we all could have done at some point become huge things online, much bigger than us. I wish you luck in the new path as a comedian in America bro.
Wish a friend of mine could think like you. I tried to talk to him about this interview and he went mad, never gave this point of view any chance. He is one of those people who wouldn't give someone who made a mistake a chance to explain himself. I got seriously disappointed.

This is a fine example of how Brazilian judicial is far more nefarious
than the executive.
Ahhahahahahhaha now tell us another joke
Jonathan Osterman than the current executive
@@Fabtp76 At least the pieces of our executive power are elected by the people, on the other hand the pieces of jury power are elected by the executive. that's real cancer of Brazilian democratic system.
And the legislative is even worse :(
No. As a Brazilian I can tell they both are equally bad...
The n word joke was funny lol
The n word joke makes me lol everytime.
Rafi is absolutely great. You have balls. Thank you very much.
This guy has funny jokes. ....."maybe" . I laughed alot
Rafinha? Here? That's a weird timeline!!!!
So a heckler is harrassing a comedian on stage, he claps back and is forced to pay them? He should have counter sued for ruining his show and damaging his future.
Cool to see our Brazilian comedian talking to Joe ! Good job bringing him in Joe Rogan !
I'm a great fan of both! Thanks for this amazing content! God bless you
anyone can give me the link for the full episode
Great interview! luv u both
Rafinha "That's Crazy Man" Bastos.
Muito Legal o Rafinha no Joe Rogan. Sou muito fã dos dois. Great!

It's not about being more or less angry, per se... it's more about the ability to be heard, and to express your views, even (especially) when unpopular.
When you can't even vent, or argue your point, then the frustration of impotence starts buzzing in the brain.
And when your words haven't been heard, that buzz starts whispering about taking _action._
lmaooo I wasn't expecting Rafinha in the Joe Rogan podcast, I watch all of them and as a brazilian this was really unexpected but really nice
I almost died when I saw the thumb.
As s Brazilian who always watch joe rogan, joey diaz... Man this shit is awesome.
I'm still a lil dizzy right now. Lol
Rafinha is one of our greatests. I remember watching him on youtube in 2005 when no one did Stand Up as we see people doing in Brazil nowadays. One of the first of our He is our Louis Ck, kinda. Great sense of humor. Great timing. Nice seeing you abroad man. Keep it rockin Rafinha.
I honestly never expect to see Rafinha on Joe's podcast one day hahaha
I understand the point... I agree to both points...is sad to lose your personality and way of thinking but when you're a public person and can make your point to a lot of people, is little dangerous not filter what you say even if is a joke.
I lived that problem in my house with my wife...I was happy to say whatever was in my mind...but she suffered a lot...at first to stop my mouth was terrible to me...to my personality but in a second moment I learned how to dose that and the peace in my house came back.
I'm from Brazil...if that's important.
Me entristece que ainda estejam assim as coisas

Rafinha is a comic genius in his own right and had to endure some very tough bullshit back home. All the best to him.
So many people can't seem to get what free speech means.. I find that disturbing
ayoub rekima So many people want to say “How much free speech is right or should we allow?” How MUCH? There is no how much with free speech. Once you even start having the discussion, free speech has already been lost.
@@mustshroom8767 I think the degree of understanding this topic is a good way to tell how logical a person is.. so far, I have never seen someone who shows a deep understanding of what free speech is that is unintelligent. Fortunately, Jordan Peterson is doing a good job explaining it. When I watch him debate or lecture, it feels like he's raising the I.Q of the population.
@@mustshroom8767 No. If you talk someone into committing a crime, you are not protected by free speech. So there is a limit. You just have to be reasonable.
It's quite simple really, your rights end where someone else's begin. Example, you can't yell fire in a crowded movie theater.
Is libel free speech? Howbout slandering people as racist or a nazi?
Why is the full video private?
When law schools use it as a teaching aid, you know it’s a horse shit technicality suit.
People are crazy. It would be nice if he could just tell his jokes, without a handful of Brazil nuts suing him.
Political Correctnes is a social cancer.
We're almost there in America! Too many goddamn snowflakes on both sides of the political Spectrum!
My wife is Brazilian from a weird rich intellectual family. Brazilians are crazy racists, crazy elitist, and just plain crazy. They are like a bad combination of
spanish, german, african, italian, etc. with many of the worst traits of all these cultures mixed up into it. They're still cooler than Americans though.
@@tranzco1173 I can see you loveeeee your wife ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
@@jaderal I had to travel all over, and yes, Brazilian woman are pretty great. Doesn't make them not fucking crazy though. 12 years in, we only threaten divorce twice maybe three times a month.

Muito legal ver o Rafinha por aqui!

Dude that jokes hilarious. Everyone tweet that to her right now.

Dude, I've never seen a brazilian citizen with such a strong accent like his.
What do you mean with “strong”?
Brs comunicando entre si em inglês kskaka wtf
Funny, I too changed my idea of him. I was just looking him up because I saw a funny clip of his. Now after this interview I think he’s a bastard.
Love these 2 guys... they're both very open minded and funny. I'd like to hang around with these kind of people.
7:45 is the best thing that Joe Rogan has said.
It’s Nice to see Rafinha Bastos on the Joe Rogan podcast 👍
I dont think Rafinha is funny, but artists getting sued is fucked up. Freedom of speach is important, and is taken for granted in Brazil
Omg that joke was hilarious I almost choked 😂
Vendo o JRE e do nada tem um Rafinha Bastos
Whats your job: I get offended at jokes.
As a Canadian i find it crazy that this happened here, since nobody i know cares about words at all and not one Canadian worth calling Canadian would back down on their freedom of speech to save their life.
Never apologize to social authoritarians. All it does is enable society to continue to get even more authoritarian.
Moral of the story: Value and protect your first amendment.
Great podcast, congratulations from Brazil
I thought Brazil was free. No freedom of speech, no freedom of thought.
