- Christina Applegate, who played Rachel's sister Amy on "Friends," looks back on what it was like guest-starring on the hit sitcom and winning an Emmy for the role.

@@Martsapso21 Yep, she ditched Brad Pitt at the 1989 VMA's. Not sure really for how long they went out. Surely for longer than just one week though. She also doesn't seem to be that shallow. Nevertheless, Christina did got to know him. So more or less knowing what Jennifer Aniston had to deal with in terms of being the wife of Brad Pitt.
@@dvchel Lol they never went out or dated. They hung out at the VMAs and then apparently Brad was so much of a tool that she ditched him for a punk rocker-type dude.

@E.A No doubt about it. In a similar way to Bruce Willis. His performance was great too. Both really helping to make the episodes more interesting. Forget about the writing and focusing on the performance instead. Wonderful.

Casting her as Rachel's sister was such a brilliant move. They truly could pass as sisters. Pretty badass that she won an Emmy for that role too.
I always had a crush on Kelly as a kid. So having a crush on Rachel as a teen, it felt like the perfect cast choice for me personally 😆

That Emmy was well deserved. Not only did she hold her own with six of the funniest people on TV, but she made every one of them a straight man to her character. That's MAD TALENT...
Well said PenelopeDinkledong S. There was this huge ensemble of six brilliant comedic actors you had to deal with. In the end she wins an Emmy award well-deserved. Meanwhile the rest of the cast and show doesn't win an Emmy at all for season nine and ten, because of the terrible Rachel and Joey fling storyline of course. It says a lot more about Christina's own unique acting talents. In a similar way to Bruce Willis in season six for his appearance as a Lawyer and father to one of Ross' girlfriends
None of them were straight men to her character.
dvchel Yes, the Joey/Rachel romance was truly dumb and in my view, the only major misstep of the show. At most, they could have had an episode where those two briefly considered it and realized it was a bad idea. I can think of numerous episodes over the years prior to that where it was clear Rachel thought Joey was sweet, pretty but not too bright. It didn’t make sense her character would desire a relationship with him. Sitcoms are not meant to depict actual reality all that well but that went too far and wasn’t funny. Aniston and LeBlanc stated their own disapproval of it.
@@danc3693 Yes and no. Rachel and Joey is not a bad idea. There was some great potential in the mid-seasons to help each one of the characters grow. Especially after the wedding in London made it clear from a writer's' p.o.v. that Ross' character was able to move on from Rachel enough to marry someone else.
However, in season nine and ten we basically and generally agree it was just too late and too inappropriate at that time that made it dumb the first moment Kauffman and Crane were conceiving it in season eight. After Rachel and Ross had their baby it had *no* further purpose. Hence, millions of people tuning out and the show losing out on dozens of potential awards once again.
Also, it is a true story that all six actors were despising the fling from the very moment Kauffman and Crane brought it up as well. Jennifer Aniston almost didn't return for the show's 10th season because of it. Wanting to leave while the show was still good, after having to suffer from the enormous backlash and justifiable major criticism following the development of the fling.
dvchel All good points and yes, there was lots of opportunities in the mid seasons for characters to grow - and they did. Nonetheless, Joey (and I love the character) is a dullard and in my view Rachel wouldn’t have been interested in him romantically. But let’s face it, the characters in 22 minute situation comedies are basically like cartoons come to life with a pinch of humans thrown in so perhaps I am expecting too much :-D
She, Janise and Rachel’s dad are the ones I think deserved more opportunity. They’re fun to watch.

Thy had asked Reese to come back but she was unavailable, so they change things around and had Amy brought in instead of Jill. Jen and Reese are good friends.
No - Reese actually was considered to come back but cause of scheduling conflicts that never happened. I think I read thats why Christina got 2 episodes instead of one.
Love Christina Applegate. Very down to earth, beautiful and a really good actress.

@Sarah W If you've seen the recent posts on Courteney and Lisa's Instagram account there is definitely some foreshadowing going on. Why not right? I was told that Friends 'rerun' episodes still have an average audience of 16 million people on a weekly basis. The unity, talent and chemistry of the group never gets old. No doubt whatever is going to happen on September 22nd this year or earlier, it will be nice, touching and fitting to the 25th anniversary going back to 1994.
What would be really neat is a new show with all of their kids. We have Ben, Emma, Erica, Jack and we know Joey has a few out there! Phoebe and Mike could have adopted or had one of their own too. The storylines are endless.
