    Dear Prof,
    I would greatly appreciate it if you would be so kind as to let me have a item of information about infinitive and gerund as subject of complement. Do let me say some examples:
    Her job is to assist you (Infinitive as subject of complement)
    Her job is assisting you (gerund as subject of complement )
    What I hate most is repeting myself (gerund as subject of complement )
    What I hate most is to repeat myself (infinite as subject of complement )
    Is correct? Could I use those interchangeably ?
    I pay my respects to you. Andrea

      @oxfordenglishnow  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Andrea, In your first example, I think it is better to say: Her job is to assist you. However often they are interchangeable with a slight difference in meaning. Sometimes the to-infinitive describes a possible action and the -ing form describes the actual performance of the action. Hope that helps. 👍

    Hello Ma'mm, I am Amit Gupta from India there is a question to understand passive of gerund and infinitive. 1. The home(Non doer) needs to be painted ( Passive of infinitive ,Both grammatically and sense are passive) / The Home needs to paint(Active of infinitive, only sense is passive) 2. The Home (Non doer) needs being painted(Passive of infinitive ,Both grammatically and sense are passive) /The home needs painting(Active of gerund, only sense is passive). Here i want to understand why passive of gerund one is wrong ? Request kindly respond

    • @oxfordenglishnow
      @oxfordenglishnow  4 года назад

      Hi Amit, it all depends on the verb pattern that is associated with the verb. So after need we always have an infinitive and not the gerund. Hope this helps! 🙏

    A student was given a home in the previous class and on the next day he tells his teacher I forgot to do my home work. I think it refers to a past action. could you please clear this doubt?

      Hi Fridex,
      A student was given a PIECE OF HOMEWORK in the previous class and on the FOLLOWING day he tells his teacher I forgot to do my homework.
      Yes this is correct for a past action. Well done! 👍

    how about we have to fulfill the exercise whether it's gerund or infinitive word? while we don't know the timeline yet... i mean, we can't assume what's the author intention in the first place
