Thanks so much for mentioning the recommendation. ❤
I was really happy to be able to recommend something to you because in most cases I benefit from YOUR recommendations. 😀
And of course, I can't agree even more that this unit is a must-have for anyone who deals with lots of data or even different OS versions. I.e. on Mac it is even possible to test newer or older OS versions in parallel to the one on the main computer because you can start a different system from one of the SSD's in the Multidock.

This topic will be relevant for a long time for both SSD and NVMe disks. I think the main thing we need to share going forward is quiet NVMe enclosures that perform well. Everything I'm finding so far that has DIY disk installation has noisy fans... even the expensive racks.
For sample library read operations SSDs won't get hot but NVMe disks could because the read rates are 5x higher and they are physically smaller. Maybe a heat sink and open chassis would be good enough for cooling? For intense prolonged video processing though I'm pretty sure you need a fan for NVMe disks.

Right now I’ve got four 2tb cards running in raid 5 (I wish I got larger sizes but it’s pricey). Anyways, all my heavy orchestral libraries run like a dream thru OWCs softraid application. Love it

Thank you for pointing out OWC Express 4m2 . I spent literally over an hour looking through OWC's many options but didn't realize this one is a DIY enclosure... and there's no fan to make noise? For NVMe disks it's probably the better option. This Blackmagic Multidock 10G is great though too because most of us (including me) have many older 2.5" SSDs.

Also for Windows users, and those on a budget, you can just use high speed USB 3.2 hubs and plug in multiple external SSDs. That's what I have done because one of these elegant solutions is pretty expensive, where as I could just but fairly affordable parts one at a time. Sure it's not quite as fast but it works just fine for large sample libraries and media composer work flows. I currently have (8) separate external SSDs spread across two USB 3.2 docks, plus other external spinning drives and USB devices, like my audio interface, MIDI keyboard, etc.. Each Hub is a powered (that's the important part, you want a powered hub with a big power supply) 7 port hub and both are full. They work fine. They are all connected to my Windows based laptop, which is my only computer for audio work. The downside is that it's messy. It's a lot of cable gack. The good part is that it was fairly afforaable, relatively speaking and I can pack up my entire studio, minus the MIDI keyboard controller (I have a small portable one) and speakers into 2 laptop bags.

Hey Dom, what you’re looking for is the Nestor NA622TB3. This one can host 4 NVME drives that connect with a single TB3 cable. I think you can even configure them in RAID setups. But than you would compromise compatibility between windows and Mac, although you can overcome that using SoftRaid for example.

I've got 2 USB 7 port hubs and I bought a little SSD->USB adapter for basically no money in this context, so say $25, and the USB ports were the same price. I attached a sound library SSD and it worked great so I bought two more and I have altogether 8TB of disk space. And it kind of works I guess. I am looking into a spanking new system of doom, though, with too much of everything haha! Then I have to take some black magic into consideration ... :D

100% behind the need for nvme slots. The main weakness of mac studios right now is that you're stuck with the low storage amount you buy from apple if you want 5GB/s or more read speeds. The docks I've found still only deliver 3.5GB/s maximum when there are SSDs on the market easily hitting more than 7GB/s. I thought thunderbolt would've solved the limitations of external storage, but unfortunately not yet.

I keep contemplating a NAS solution with everything via Ethernet 10gig. Blackmagic does those too! I do have a wandering 4tb Thunderbolt 4 NVME drive which leaps between my Windows desktop and my M2 iPad Pro. Mostly used for video. Although pricey, a good NAS would combine huge storage plus RAID, so there is a safety aspect to it too. I know it seems overkill when it is just one of you, but I know a couple of people that have gone that route and haven't looked back. They spent a good amount of money on a big NAS container, but then didn't fill it up with drives - they have added to it over time. That was SSD. But you can get NVME too. ASUSTOR do a 12-bay NVME NAS solution, I notice that does both 2x 2.5 or 10gb connection. (I haven't looked at it in detail). It is a tricky one.
Startech do a 4 bay NVME TB3 which is cheaper than the Blackmagic rack that you might want to look at.
I want to get all my libraries external before my next system upgrade. That will will give me more flexibility when it comes to case size and so forth, (depending on the graphics card!).
One thing worthy of note, however, is the big difference between M2.NVME when it comes to speed when they are full up. The powerful WD examples lose very little speed, but the cheaper 4TB versions can slow down quite a bit, I have read. Enough to create problems on something like video footage, though possibly less so on audio libraries.
Anyway, that is my completely inexpert thoughts!!!

    • @JoeKataldo
      @JoeKataldo Год назад

NAS is the way to go if you plan on expanding your team, especially if you go the route of an enterprise solution and not prosumer. At Mad Wave Audio we have multiple workstations in house and remote, and they all need to access the same projects and even work on them in parallel.

Asustor has two all-M.2 SSD NAS products with up to 10 Gbps Ethernet interface speeds, so if you're looking into something cheap but with much higher speeds and with NVMe SSDs (up to 12 of them) - these solutions may be worth exploring and investing. I have to say - I haven't tried Asustor myself, just wanted to suggest what I saw on Linus Tech Channel. Blackmagic Design products are all excellent (superb!) of course - but from what I understand their 4x SSD are all for SSD SATA disks, not NVMe - so that may be a bottleneck in some situations. Also, NVMe disks might be a little cheaper than enclosed SSD with SATA interface. I could be wrong so if someone knows better, feel free to comment.

You know Dom I love your videos but your thumbnails and titles are too much click bait. You make great content, you don't need to do click bait please. I already know your channel and if I want to learn anything I know I can count on your channel but the click bait just socks.
Just show us the black magic thing in the title or thumbnail .

Hey man! Thanks a lot for the kind words and thanks for watching.
I take all comments in consideration and I want to touch on this subject.
One thing that is crucial with RUclips is thumbnails and titles. It’s the factor that determines if people on RUclips are going to watch the videos or not.
RUclips pushes you to create interesting titles. When I didn’t, even long time users didn’t watch the videos. We’re they bad videos? No. But the thumbnails might have been very ordinary.
You might say you know me but most people don’t :) And the amount of work that goes into these RUclips videos is immense. The costs for making them is very high too. And remember this is free content that I bring you weekly with very few exceptions. I never miss a date.
My thumbnails are not clickbaits. Clickbait is a thumbnail that promises something to lure you in and it doesn’t deliver. If you were my friend and I wanted to talk to you about the Blackmagic I would tell you “I can’t live without it in my studio”. I’m honest. If I just had the title of the device in there nobody would know what it was and nobody would care about a product title.
At the end of the day, I want to think my videos deliver quality and useful informations and well-crafted titles do help in people discovering the videos and the channel. If they don’t, I will not make any more videos because it won’t be sustainable.
I am thinking of making a course where there won’t be any thumbnails or titles to distract you if it bothers you.
But my free content will always be there available to everyone. And I will do my best so people can benefit from it for free without paywalls.
I hope this helps you see my perspective.
      ❤️

      Hi @DomSigalas
      I hear you
It just sucks to have to Click on a video just to see or hear what this exciting thing that I can't do without. All I am saying is that it would really be great to know what the video is about by reading the title or seeing the thumbnail, but it's alright.
