This was incredible. What luck to find your video. I was about to trade in my SE as I stumbled upon this informative session. I purchased the kit, replaced the battery (after breaking one of the original adhesive strips as well... oy), and am looking forward to keeping this beauty of a tiny phone going for a few more years. Less landfill material! Thank you very much.
Just removed the battery of an SE I got a month ago battery was 79% the tabs broke (rookie shit haha) I had to put alcohol as much as I could and with a plastic tool and my fingers pull the battery out lol, that was an absolute nightmare. Amazing phone still to this day lol even with the battery % that it had.
I'm wondering if it is even necessary to add the adhesive to the new battery....seems like it will be even more of a pain in the backside next time to replace the battery.
I went through a number of vids before I lucked upon yours. You showed all the foibles trying to get these 1st gen phones cracked open without cracking them. I’m not embarrassed to say it took me about 1.5 hrs. to complete the replacement. Most of that time was spent getting the case to separate. Thank you for an honest, unfiltered and real life DIY. I would have quit the install if it weren’t for you. The phone is working flawlessly. Thank you so much!!!
Rick, this was excellent! You were no nonsense, not goofy or silly, not trying to act like a comedian, you played no background music, and your audio levels were perfect. You did an outstanding job and I appreciate it!
Hands down, the best step-by-step video. Followed it to replace my battery earlier this year... and again last night to replace the battery on a 2nd phone.
Absolutely spot on! we have two SE’s that had popped the batteries (& of course, the cases). Quoted silly money to get them fixed, so bought two kits on Amazon - first one (the worst one) had a few tricks, and it’s good to see the experts don’t always have it easy too! But all up & working fine. Just a point to note is the cover for the first (last) connector had come off, so after pushing the connector in (about 15:00) just had to fiddle the cover on. Thanks for a great lesson.
I just did this yesterday on my SE. Of course the adhesive strips broke right off for me so I had to resort to some 15lb fishing line to cut through the white stuff. Also, I did mine WITHOUT removing the display and the cables - not too hard if you can hold it open with one hand or as I did prop it up against my chest. Another thing I didn't do was glue the replacement battery in - there is absolutely no need to as it sits snug anyway. Happy to say all went well and I now have a phone that can run 2-3 days, as opposed to the old battery that couldn't stay 5 min away from a charger. There is absolutely no argument for having manufacturers glue batteries in - these are wear items that die meaning they will need to be removed and replaced. Another way to do it instead of a plastic credit card is to use a playing card with a 45 cut on the corner and run some alcohol over the edge - it will go through the glue like a hot knife through butter.
EXCELLENT vid with great details, after watching 3 others yours is the best! After watching I decided to have it done professionally ($50) as I have the mechanical ability but at 69 years old I don’t have the patience and steady hands I see are needed, as Clint Eastwood says in Dirty Harry “a mans got to know his limitations “!
Very good video, the best on RUclips for this battery replacement. Love the tip of fixing the screen to a can, I used some very low tack tape to avoid leaving glue of the inside case. Personally, I don't think you need to detach the screen cables But DO remove the 4 screw shield to release the stress at the 3 cable bends. As Rick says, take your time, very slowly to remove the adhesive strips to avoid a headache further down the line. I found some low magnetic tape and cut pieces into a tray to position the screws so as not to mix them. Before assembly, gently wipe the grime build up around the edge of the glass and case profile. Pure alcohol and lint free cloth should work fine for this
I bought the kit from your Amazon link and followed all your tips and it worked great. Much cheaper and faster than taking it to a store to get it fixed.
This was great I’m so glad I found your video. The length of time you took to explain everything was absolutely one of the best videos I looked at. Step-by-step instructions to really help me a lot in venturing to change my battery. Thanks so much for doing this
Excellent vid!! I had a flawless install except for the steel clip that attaches the screen to the phone flew off. I guess the adhesive to the ribbon cable dried out. Took me 15 minutes with some tweezers to snap the darn thing back in place. Luckily this will be the last battery I’ll replace on this SE. You’re awesome!!
Thanks so much I agree with other commentors that this is the best video on the subject by far. I wish there was a way to nominate you for a RUclips emmy or something. My phone had a small metal cap over the connector for the fingerprint/ home button. Also there is a rubber shield covering something near the power button. it was out of place and had kinked and creased one of the ribbons from the digitizer. I was able to manipulate it into it's proper position and flatten the crease in the ribbon, doesn't appear to be any harm done. I used the glass stovetop on our range to heat the case. It was still warm from cooking earlier, it was barely cool enough to touch with my bare hand. Set the phone on it for about 3 minutes until I could feel warmth on top of the battery. Carefully and slowly pulled the adhesive tabs as you instructed. They both stretched and clicked their way out 100% clean. The most difficult part of the reassembly was getting the one non magnetized screw into place. I've rebuilt quite a few android devices and a couple iPhone screens but this is my first iPhone battery. It went smoothly thanks to you. One less piece of ewaste to be dumped on a foreign shoreline.
Excellent instructions. I used a tiny standard screw driver to pry the tab of the stretchy adhesive from behind the cable end of the battery and then was able to pull on it until is started to tear. At that point I put the std tiny screwdriver back in and wrapped the sticky stretchy adhesive onto the screwdriver and winched the adhesive out perfectly; just kept turning the screwdriver until all the adhesive had rolled onto the screwdriver shaft!
Replaced my battery today - this was the most helpful video I’ve found by far! I have a fair bit of experience working on PCs and laptops, so if you’ve done that sort of stuff before, it’s really not that different, just a whole lot smaller! Both my battery strips came out in one piece. What I found worked was to pull very slowly until a little resistance is felt, then slack off a bit, then repeat. It took me about 5-6 mins per strip. Just taking it easy and going by feel with no sudden movements. The only issue I had was the very last thing - the bracket over the button cable! There wasn’t a good shot in the video, but the side with the two holes is “up” - towards the battery. Also, one of my screws on the big top plate is captive on my particular phone. Lastly, THANK YOU for this video! $20 bucks for the battery and the phone is like new!
I just replaced my battery via your vid- it worked! Also, the fact that your adhesive broke during the demo was actually a very helpful point in the vid because I pulled my adhesive at too low an angle (even though you warned against it) and the adhesive broke off. So I got some floss and worked the battery out with that. Excellent vid, thanks so much! I’m now calibrating the battery per your instructions.
Looks super hard to do, but you did a great job Rick in removing the parts, the adhesive and putting the new battery with the new adhesive strips. Thanks for your videe! You clearly show and explain each step by step action in removing the parts (screws and cover plates) and how to slowly remove the hidden adhesive strips with tips to do it well. Great battery replacement video!😀
I brought one of those kits. Unfortunately not via your link. The tools were adequate though the tips were not magnetic enough to hold the screws firmly. I used the suction cup as you did but it came apart quicker than I thought it would. The button ribbon separated and the metal clip went flying. Lucky I found it and no damage was done. The top right screw on the screen plate was not magnetic neither on mine. My adhesive broke right at the tip and I had to pry the end up to get hold of that tape. I distorted the end of the battery quite a bit. Be careful were you lever against the board. Then everything went back together, very fiddle connecting the connectors and screwing the plates back on. The button cable was very tricky to get on though the metal plate was easy. Surprise surprise the phone now works. Thank you.
Great vid, thank you!! Well done. For picking up tiny screws, you can also use a tiny piece of duct tape to press onto the screw, thereby picking it up, and then carefully move it to the new location, being sure the screw doesn’t fall off the sticky tape in the transition.
Fantastic!! I admire your obviously wealth of experience. Thanks for sharing so much of it in detail. I especially appreciate your numerous tips and warnings. You have a terrific style of instructing! Thinking to share the method to prevent stripping those tiny screws will help a lot! I subscribed and look forward to learning much more. 5 Stars! 👍
Very helpful video, thank you! For me the hardest part was getting the case open. I don't think I'm too weak, but it took me a lot of strength to put enough force on the suction cup to move the screen. I eventually used 2 suction cups and wrapped some strong wire around my phone to keep the 2 parts from flying appart. That probably saved a lot of cables inside. And also, my device (128 GB, EU) had an additional cover on top of the Touch ID connector, but that wasn't too hard to handle.
Absolutely agree, cases on videos have been opened more than once so easy to separate, also reconnecting the cables wasn’t as straight forward as shown as the alignment is not that easy, otherwise a well presented video.
Not for the faint hearted because it’s very tricky especially doing it for the first time, but this video gives step by step guidance and some great tips to make it easier - thanks. Ps; I might add that it best to back your phone up first because on the first attempt my phone didn’t work and I suddenly felt panic that I had lost everything.
Usually the original battery perform 4:30 hours, so how long this battery stay stood? And your's is one of the best video i have ever seen, love you man❤️❤️
Terrific tutorial; I practiced on and removed an almost brand new battery from my old (and dead) 1st Gen. SE and put it into my wife's SE (now mine - she got the new phone...). Your explanations and warnings were totally spot-on - other than an extra cover over the Home button connector. You made it so a 64-year-old with the right tools (less than $9 from WMart) could do it. Took just over an hour total. Thanks for the time and effort you put into making this. It is very appreciated. By any chance, do you have a tutorial for re-doing a corner shower pan and tile?
I am making an exception to make a public comment because this man also has some VERY GOOD and useful tips as you go through the process -- Thank you. PS I'm also now subscribed....
I bought the battery kit you showed here. I was able to follow your instructions and replace my battery. Many thanks! The hardest parts were first getting my case open. I finally had to use a small flat blade screw driver and a small hammer to open it. After that the hardest part was getting those tiny screws back in the hole. But phone is now back to normal.
thanks a lot for this. Super helped! But yes I think however slow u do the adhesives, they can be real jerks lol. To someone else reading this, it's somewhat ok to bend the battery (not too much) I bent mine ever so slightly just to be able to access the adhesives again. (another heavy note, just try lifting using a plastic tool and not metal) After all of that, everything was a breeze to install and put back. Good luck to anyone!
Thank you for this excellent video. There were several steps that were tricky, and your video really helped me resolve these issues (like the adhesive strip breaking).
Great video, did make a big oops by warming for too long on high heat and ended up melting the adhesive away. Other than that, the video made everything go smoothly. There also appears to be another little clip that goes over the touch ID ribbon but didn't take much to figure it out.
Great and very helpful video. Only issue I had was a little metal cover on the home button cable popped off separately but I was able to figure out how to replace it. I was very careful with the adhesive pulling it very slowly after heating the back of the phone with a bed heating pad and got both strips out cleanly then the battery just came out, just like robertaustin did. Really, no problems thanks to Rick and a good dose of patience. One other thing, I taped some blue tape upside down in the plastic tray the battery came in to use to stick the screws and covers in order.
Very detailed tutorial. My glue strips ripped right away. I injected alcohol and then pulled them from the back side with ease using the tweezer. THANK YOU !!!
I upgraded to an iPhone 13 mini but I have kept my SE around. I really just wanted the better camera of the newer phone but the SE was still working very well for me. They packed a lot of phone into that small size.
Thanks for making this video. It is super helpful. I changed the battery. Obviously I broke both battery tapes - I used 3D printer heatbed and a dental floss to remove them. I inserted the floss under the battery, then set the temperature to 55C, waited for the phone to heatup and the gently work my way under the battery with the floss inserting the spatula under one side of the battery.
Thank you Rick. I'm considering changing the battery on my daughters iphone se as it won't turn on. Apple want a minimum of €243 to change it, yet their trade in value against a new phone is €40. It appears that I have nothing to lose! Nice idea with the can to support it as well as initially turning the screws the opposite way. Paul
Thank you ! I changed for the first time a battery on a IPhone SE 1 fst generation. Thanks to your video and yours great advices, everything went great :)
I’ve learned from experience to check the front facing camera as well before you put the phone all the way back together because one of the 3 ribbon cables at the top that you have to disconnect for the screen is the front camera so if that cable isn’t on all the way your camera won’t work and you’ll have to take it all apart again
Excellent video, with the battery upgrade done on this phone, how many times a day do you need to charge your phone versus the original battery inside?
Thank you so much for your video, I could remove the battery.now, i am struggling to reconnect digitizer cable connector, is there any tip? it was easy and fun to disconnect...
I just ordered and got in a replacement battery for my SE. I dnt use it really cause it has to stay on charger or will die in 10min or so. My brand replacement is different, Hopefully it works ! I’m basically practicing with my IPhone SE SO I can get the idea and feel before changing My 8+ which I’m still using , but it’s at 82% So, I want to practice changing the SE Before trying it on my MAIN iPhone I’m using atm. I hope the SE comes out well though, always liked it! Also, I can use it as an extra Remote again , lol. I’ve got 3 different replacement batteries 2 the same, and a Different one for the 8 Plus. Fingers Crossed 🤞 everything goes well. I have a feeling getting that Battery out is what’s going to be a Pain! Probably getting it Apart with the suction cups also! I’m going to watch a Few More videos as well before starting, but going by comments yours seems to be the best ! Do U have a 8Plus replacement battery change video?
Great video. I noticed your Touch ID cable was missing its metal retainer clip in this video. I had to find another tutorial to cover reinstallation of that little sucker. Both pull tabs for the battery adhesive broke instantly so I had to break the rules a little bit and pry the battery out with a gift card and bend the battery in the process. Also as others have pointed out in the Amazon review, this battery is about half a millimeter thicker than the original Apple battery. After reassembling the phone, if you press hard in some areas of the screen, you will see the LCD discolor and warp a little bit towards the bottom. The extra thickness of the battery pushes against the display. It's pretty minor though and the battery seems to be good quality regardless.
Thanks for this video! It helped me very well. I finish the battery replacement right now and phone works!:) I noticed the one difference from this video and it was the face time camera cable (that camere above the display) connector is covered by some metal clip cover, but it was very easy to take off it and then at the finish put back:) Thanks for this video.
Rick, you did a fantastic job in your step by step explanations on this overly complicated job of replacing a battery. As a retired Human Factors Engineer I can honestly say that I think Apple did a horrible design in the battery replacement steps. I wonder if very thin velcro tapes, to hold the battery in place, might have been better than the glue-tape. Leave it to Apple to make it overly complicated!
Awsome video. Do you use the phone on the daily? I changed my battery once but I chose a pretty poor brand - the phone starts lagging at below 20% charge. I wanted to try this one but I wonder whether it works fine.
Have watched 2 U tube, both excellent confidence builders. Yours with issues was more useful. What goes wrong, how to resolve. Thanks. Now buy a battery.
I just got a Replacement battery for my 1st Gen SE. the Apple battery is definitely in need of changing to a new battery! It’s Only like 75% so It dIES FAST! I didn’t get the same Replacement Battery as yours, But I have 2 other Different Replacement Battery Kits for an IPhone 8 and 8+ . If you by chance see this, What If You didn’t Put the New Adhesive on the new Battery? And instead Just Put the Battery in without it?
I don't know all of the implications of not using the adhesive but I've heard of people leaving it out. I personally use it, especially since I likely won't be changing the battery again on a specific phone.
I just bought this phone. Didnt know it had a regular headphone jack until now! even more excited and will definitely be doing this battery upgrade! thanks for the vid! Has anyone used a hot air gun on low setting? I also read a review on amazon that said it was easier to pull the glue strips down the length of the battery. Any thoughts?
Question, is the battery actually good? I’m trying to find a good battery substitute, and I’m afraid whether the battery is genuine enough to support the iPhone
Changed the battery using your directions. One glue strip snapped. I couldn't get the floss trick to work, so used a card to prise the battery up. The most difficult part was the final connection. The small cover had come off so it was a bit fiddly to replace both, taking several tries. I took the opportunity to clean around the edge of the glass with an alcohol wipe. It was reassuring to see the Apple logo appear before I had completed the final connection. Once done, my daughter was able to remove everything and reset it. However, the iphone won't charge. The charger is fine, as it works on another iphone. It appears the original battery was probably ok, with the problem being the charging port. Have you changed one of those?
@@Rickmakes Thank you. I have found a video relating to that and have ordered a new charging port. I tried a DFU reset, but that didn't make any difference to the charging. The iphone shows that it is charging, but it isn't.
This is a great and helpful video. However and unbelievably for me who happens to do every repair around the house, including appliances, I will not try doing it myself. I’d rather go to the Apple store and pay them to replace it instead of chancing needing to spend hundreds on a new phone. Sharing this to my grandsons, who’ll not be afraid of the challenge. 🥴 Thanks…
I understand that. If you are ever up for the challenge, you could always try replacing the battery on an older, spare phone but I understand leaving it to others too.
Hi very helpful. I made a mistake and lost one of the four screws. :( I have a quick question. When everything is removed (the battery, the metal plates, the screen) is it normal to hear a rattle when shaking? I started wondering if the screw I lost got stuck inside something so I took everything apart just in case and still hear the rattle. Do you think it's the lost screw or something else? Sorry if it a stupid question but this is my first replacing or even using an iPhone.
Please....there are people who are extremely capable of helping you for very affordable prices in your local mall or phone repair shops. While your tbere you could also ask them directly to teach you a few things about the phone and the repair process which would be much better than reading comments online
Best idea using huge suction cup, the little kit suction cup is useless bravo !Personally I never disconnect any cable but the battery it's more . awkward but I don't like removing all those other finicky cables just to change a battery.
By removing the screws and the underlying cable, it allows me to separate the two halve of the phone. This prevents me from damaging the ribbon cables in the following steps.
Hi, many thanks for your video. One question: did you have to reset to factory settings the telephone after changing the battery? Background of the question: I have unfortunately let the battery change at the Apple store and they had to reset the telephone. They had warned me before this could happen... how possible do you judge this to happen?
I've seen it recommended that you reset the device but I don't generally do it for battery replacements. I guess I would try it if a problem occurred but I haven't needed to.
@@Rickmakes Hi, thanks for your answer. Well I was also asking this because I do think that Apple does it on purpose to reset the telephone. In fact if they reset it they will have to install the latest iOS version (so it works at Apple). By installing the latest version, the phone will consume much more battery, so you finally get tired of it and you better buy a new one. I have now iOS 14 on my iPhone SE and the battery lasts basically the same as the old one. 55 euro wasted.
Very good video thank you, however view obstructed by your hand when dealing with the top metal plate and when completing and you don’t show detail of best way to get the button cable and clip in place, as it is asymmetrical it needs to be around the correct way before pressing, clear video of this would be useful otherwise a successful job completed, now for another one! Thanks again.
for the adhesive band, I wiggle the adhesive right and left while I'm pulling it slowly. I was able to pull the two tapes without broken them. I did the same tricks for my two iphones ( 5S and SE) without any problems. Hope this could help..
I'm about to try this when my new battery gets here. What if you don't put the new adhesive strips back on would anything bad happen? Just thinking in case you have to replace the battery again it would be easier
A really well done video! No music, no babbling, narrative is clearly rehearsed and delivered. Thanks for posting this video.

Of all the videos on this topic I have watched, yours is absolutely the best when it comes to placement of the new adhesive strips. Thank you!

Did mine as well. Forgotten how pocket sized they are. Only reason I stopped using it was because of the camera at night not picking up details.
Thanks for an excellent video. I was a technical instructor and this covers everything it should. Clear, concise and the right length. I must try it.

And your's is one of the best video i have ever seen, love you man❤️❤️
thanks buddy. this video helped me changed the battery in my moms SE and now she dont have to buy another phone right away
“… By any chance, do you have a tutorial for re-doing a corner shower pan and tile?…” 🤣
So accurate! Not a single detail missing. AWESOME. THANK YOU!
Glad you were able to get the job done!
does it last longer than the apple’s battery that comes in the iPhone?
thanks a lot for this.
Great explanation! I appreciate the time and effort you took to record your experience. This should make my battery replacement easy. Thank you!
There are people that still use this phone ! So, thank you very much! Succeeded 😵💫 !
Paul
Did you ever do it?!?!
Great video. I'm in the process of putting together my iphone SE after changing the battery. Thanks so much.
Thank you ! I changed for the first time a battery on a IPhone SE 1 fst generation.
Thanks to your video and yours great advices, everything went great :)
Glad it helped.
Really appreciate your knowledge and assistance with this task. Worked out fine, thank you.
I’ve learned from experience to check the front facing camera as well before you put the phone all the way back together because one of the 3 ribbon cables at the top that you have to disconnect for the screen is the front camera so if that cable isn’t on all the way your camera won’t work and you’ll have to take it all apart again
Best video ever
Excellent video, with the battery upgrade done on this phone, how many times a day do you need to charge your phone versus the original battery inside?
If I'm not using it a lot, it would go the whole day. If I was recording videos on it, I might charge it up a little mid day.
I’m basically practicing with my IPhone SE
SO I can get the idea and feel before changing My 8+ which I’m still using , but it’s at 82%
So, I want to practice changing the SE Before trying it on my MAIN iPhone I’m using atm.
Unfortunately I don't have any videos on the 8 or 8 plus.
Thank you! I had a little silver clip on the first cable, putting it back on I didn’t know which way it went. Other than that, it was easy.
Just want to ask about the battery health. Is the battery health displayed for the new battery installed?
I’m also curious to know about the health of the new battery
It does show battery health. It says "Maximum Capacity 100%".
I wonder if there were different iterations of the iPhone SE as I never had the retainer clip in mine.
Excellent! Thanks.
Thank you! Very useful video that helped me change my phone battery with a little less frustration!
Great DIY video. With your guidance, I will attempt to replace my battery. The phone still works fine, just need some juice!
Very well done and super informative. Thank you for sharing
Excellent video instructions. I was successful with my installation following these steps.
well done and made simple- thank you
Awsome video. Do you use the phone on the daily? I changed my battery once but I chose a pretty poor brand - the phone starts lagging at below 20% charge. I wanted to try this one but I wonder whether it works fine.
Yes. I actually record my RUclips videos with it daily. It has been working great.
Hugely helpful and great training!
Have watched 2 U tube, both excellent confidence builders. Yours with issues was more useful. What goes wrong, how to resolve. Thanks. Now buy a battery.
Excellent instructional video. Thank you.
Great howto video, well explained and filmed, much appreciated
Thanks 🙏 will be replacing the battery in mine.
I haven't changed a charging port but I don't think it is any more difficult than changing the battery.
@@Rickmakes Thank you. I have found a video relating to that and have ordered a new charging port. I tried a DFU reset, but that didn't make any difference to the charging. The iphone shows that it is charging, but it isn't.
Can the iphone 5s take this battery too?
This is a great and helpful video. However and unbelievably for me who happens to do every repair around the house, including appliances, I will not try doing it myself. I’d rather go to the Apple store and pay them to replace it instead of chancing needing to spend hundreds on a new phone. Sharing this to my grandsons, who’ll not be afraid of the challenge. 🥴 Thanks…
I understand that. If you are ever up for the challenge, you could always try replacing the battery on an older, spare phone but I understand leaving it to others too.
How long should we heat up the phone before we start pulling the tape? Thank you!
Thanks a lot for this video, it was so easy follow your instructions!!!
Bro how many hours battery life you get before and after plz tell
what is the "power braking the battery"? Any benefits?
Thank you.
Great video, I will watch this while I repair mine. But at 4:40, why exactly do you remove those 4 screws?
By removing the screws and the underlying cable, it allows me to separate the two halve of the phone. This prevents me from damaging the ribbon cables in the following steps.
i discovered that I had to calibrate my battery after replacing. thanks!
Thanks a lot for the help! Ended up snapping the battery tape on both sides right away -__- I had to heat it up and use dental floss to pry it out!
Is it really 2300 mah cause I’ve seen on amazon also 2800 versions is that accurate or are they just 1400 like the og SE batteries
Commy Battery
SE2016
Model+25% = 2000mAh
❤❤SE2016/64GB❤❤
Excellent step-by-step video.
55 euro wasted.
iOS 14 consumes definitely more power, than 13 did. The best of it was 14.4, but this version is now gone to get to.
Excellent video. Thank you.
Really nice job. Thank you!
for the adhesive band, I wiggle the adhesive right and left while I'm pulling it slowly. I was able to pull the two tapes without broken them. I did the same tricks for my two iphones ( 5S and SE) without any problems. Hope this could help..
Good battery? Longer screen time?
I am happy with the battery. I don't know how it compares with the original battery when it was new but it was definitely better than my old battery.
perfect explanation, thank you!
Would u be able to heat the phone up with a hairdryer or would that not work
(Edit) Hairdryer did work and the battery came out really easy.
A hairdryer would work. You would want to make sure to heat it evenly by pulling the hairdryer back from the phone and/or moving it back and forth.
Thanks man you saved me a few hundred bucks!
I love hearing that!
I'm about to try this when my new battery gets here. What if you don't put the new adhesive strips back on would anything bad happen? Just thinking in case you have to replace the battery again it would be easier
I just replaced my battery but I left the screen attached, much simpler and it did not make it difficult to do the remaining steps.
Thank you very much for sharing was very helpful and the floss tip very handy.
