In the past on this channel, when I have spoken about the Red Hot Chili Peppers I ruffled some feathers and received some backlash from the RHCP fans. Today, I'm going to try and say some nice things about a song that I think most people quite enjoy, it's "Give It Away". Are you a fan?

The "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" album blew my mind as a teen. I understand that it's not everybody's cup of tea but they did some very melodic, zeppelin-esque moments on that album. Breaking the Girl, I Could've Lied, The Greeting Song, Sir Psycho Sexy. Apache Rose Peacock, My Lovely Man.. So many cool bridge sections those songs. You can't just skip around on that album. You have to listen to in from top to bottom at least once to appreciate it.

an old video of John playing at 17 years old recently came out. In a totally Van Halen/ Steve Vai style. At that age, John knew all the tricks on the guitar. gifted musician
Admirable that what for many that is already a goal, John preferred to expand and fit what the band needs.

Partly that. People change, they pursue what they might later feel is their true calling. But don't underestimate the demands of the time and place. A lot of the players who are known as primarily alternative musicians were shred kings shortly before the rise of Alt between 1988/89 - 1990 and the dominance of Grunge after 1991. They changed because that's where the money went. Rivers Cuomo (Weazer) is on the record in interviews, basically saying that he and a mess of other players had spent their entire youths gaining serious chops and shred ability, only to have to chuck it all and "pretend to suck" after 1991, just to get a record deal.

Rather than considering what to play, like a musician would, he seemed to look at what a song should do, the feeling and the effect. I think frusciante explained it best in an interview or something, where he said that keidis needs like a loop or a riff to sing along to and his playing is meant to compliment the vocals mostly, that's how the band operated, and he also said something about how the theatrics up and down the fretboard don't mean shit if the song sounds awful, maybe that's why his playing on the records sounds simplistic and thats what Justin is refering to as expressionless ? Idk honestly I loved frusciante cause he's like a ringo starr, if you don't know who he is and you happen to listen to his song, at first glance you think ah well that's easy, and then you try to replicate it and you just can't quite get it right. That to me is a very unique talent, and his solo work is also really nice and mellow. One of the greatest to ever do it ? I don't know but it doesnt matter as long as it sounds as good as it does

Nina is indeed german. To be precise, she grew up in former East Germany, where she had her first hit "Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen, mein Michael" (Michael, you forgot to bring the color film). This was not punk at all, rather a kind of novelty song. Basically it is about her beeing annoyed that her vacation is perfect with sunny days in a beautiful landscape and she can't take pictures because her partner left the color films at home.
Obviously there was no digital photography back then, and if you ran out of film or failed to bring it with you in the first place, you couldn't take pictures. Those were the times when you thought twice if a certain shot was worth on of the 36 pictures you had on one of your limited number of cartridges (maximum). One of the best shows i ever saw was RHCP on NYE 1990 in San Francisco. We were out there for a run of Dead shows at Oakland Coliseum, and got shut out the final night 12/31.
We heard RHCP was playing across the bridge, so we cabbed it to SF and arrived just as the nearly-nude, sock-wearing boys hit the stage. The entire venue, including the balcony, instantly transformed into a mosh pit that didn't let up for the next two hours

People always say that John Frusciante and his band mates are best experienced live. I’ve never heard them live, but I have seen recordings of them playing live - and it just seems very different. Perhaps you should compare their live performances with the recordings? Maybe you’ll hear more of the color you’re looking for that you’re not hearing in the produced versions? Or maybe you won’t . . . but it’s a way to give their music another try!

I’ve seen them live. It was pretty good. Some recordings can capture a band live fairly well, but I’ve been to live shows that you just can’t recreate watching on a recording. It depends on the venue, acoustics and how close you are to the front (good luck at a Chili Peppers gig getting anywhere close to the front). It’s really hard to appreciate. I’m sure Justin knows from playing live and being at shows through his career. The one thing I’ve noticed in particular is that certain songs just make more sense when you see them live, that listening to the released album don’t make sense or leave you feeling flat, but blow you away live. That’s the best bit, discovering how the artist intended you to experience the song.

If not for Flea and Frusciante, I wouldn't give them the time of day. Kiedis sounds like he's reading off a Chinese dinner menu, where all the meals are prefixed by "California" (egg rolls, fried rice etc.)
FISHBONE was where it was at, and where you could find me.
