Hi Dillon! (I hope that’s spelled right) Just wanted to say thanks for introducing me to all of this new music. As a young teenager, I never grew up with rock from the 60/70s (and neither did my parents), so I have to look elsewhere for music recommendations. Just wanted to let you know that channel has been a great source for exploring different types of rock that I would have never known about :)

Thanks man! I was in the same boat at your age. I am 35 now, so I grew up in the 90s. My parents weren’t music people so it was hard to know where to look! Glad to help!

Great stuff! Definitely agree that Anthem of the Sun is the Grateful Dead’s most psychedelic album. Your recommendation of Pink Floyd’s debut, Piper at the Gates of Dawn can’t be underscored enough. Astronomy Domine and Interstellar Overdrive are pure psychedelia. Syd Barrett was a force of nature.

Millennium is a particularly fun one for its history. Lore has it that Brian Wilson was beginning Pet Sounds and wandered down the hall to hear what this wunderkind named Curt Boettcher was creating with other members of the Wrecking Crew (the Capitol studio musicians who played on everything). Wilson was floored. It heavily influenced his approach to Pet Sounds. So it's fun to hear how the Millennium "broke up" and Boettcher went on to form Sagittarius who also made a baroque psych masterpiece called "Present Tense." TL: DR - Present Tense is a great nugget of late 60's California psych. Voila.

Hey man. This may sound generic, but when I was in high school and began smoking grass, I started with The Beatles Rubber Soul, Revolver, and then, of course, the rest of the Fab 4's lps. The Doors self titled lp was also on heavy rotation, as well as Jimi Hendrix studio albums. When I got to college, I discovered Syd Barrett Pink Floyd, as I delved into hallucinogenic substances. Next, the bus came by and I got on, that's when it all began with The Grateful Dead, traveled the country, missed many classes and attending many shows from 1989-1995 (I graduated in 1993 somehow). The rest is ancient history, now I'm into underground psych, prog, hard rock, and obscure private press stuff, like yourself. I learned a lot from watching the the early RUclips videos on collecting such lps, yourself included later on. I just recently obtained Acid Archives and can't put it down. Thanks for keeping the ball rolling. Peace ✌ ☮ 🕊

The best psych book imo is the highly renowned "PSYCHEDELIA--101 ICONIC UNDERGROUND ROCK ALBUMS 1966-1970" by Richard Morton Jack. Best cover, best inner artwork, best graphics, the best package if you want a definitive psych record guide; also promoted heavily by Matt Sands & The Psych Professor. Great introduction video bud! I do remember that first video you did and it was a huge wealth of info at the time for me.
I got into Psych because of my parents. My dad was a Vietnam vet and he listened to a lot of Psych . It started with the British Invasion stuff but I remember going through his vinyl as a kid and the covers of some of the albums catching my eye. That's how it started for me. My mom was and is a huge Moody Blues fan and it was Days Of Future Past she played it to death when I was growing up.
That being said you've turned me on to so many new Psych bands I didn't know about....And you've sent me on this quest for an og Easter Everywhere.
    Great stuff as always.

Lots of great new bands in the vein of psych as well. Some 60s revival alternative style but some very heavy psych, world music, folk and more. Pish by the Brian Jonestown Massacre is one of the best psych songs ever and it came out less than 10 years ago. If i were to make a top 10 of my favorite psych songs, half would be BJM songs. Other new “pysch” bands to look into are the Black Angels, Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, Allah-lahs, Goat, Soundcarriers. All solid bands making new music that you can buy for $20-$30.

It's worth mentioning that despite Dillon's implication that an original pressing or first release is better as a matter of fact.

It would be inaccurate to favor one over the other in general terms.

Kaleidoscope eyes is a decent book I had in University days when researching psych music. Endless trip looks like it's worth tracking down.
Blue Cheer not being psychedelic is an interesting take. Vincebus pretty much invented the Heavy Psych genre.
I find I'm more discerning and can't/don't like everything. Some of the albums in this video I love, like Hendrix, Neil Merryweather, Plastic Cloud, Blue Cheer, Pink Floyd, July, and some not so much. Lean more to the heavier psych side.
Not really introductory psych stuff, but was wondering if you listen to records like Fifty Foot Hose and Spoils of War? Not sure I've seen you mention them before.
    Cheers

Anthem of the Sun is definitely the Dead at their most psychedelic. I remember getting it really young because I loved Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, then I get hit with all this zany tape editing. I sold it at a family yard sale soon after like a dumbass. But I love it now (and have another copy).
In The Land Of Pink And Grey is a true "Canterbury Scene" classic. That fuzzed out keyboard sound is great. Hard not to be in a good mood when Golf Girl is on.
13th Floor Elevators in the shrink? Good Lord. It was probably too weird for whoever bought it in 1966! Isn't the mono master tape for that missing? Makes pristine copies like that all the important.
Speaking of tapes, that story about the one you are reissuing (or really issuing for the first time) is amazing.

Some good choices. I agree that "July" is one of the best, but to mention Space Rock & not mention "Hawkwind" is sacralidge. They are the Fathers of Space Rock. Also to say "Blue Cheer" is not really "Psych" couldn't be farther from the truth. When that album came out in 67, it melted minds. I was there. As a 68 year old, I could go on & on , but I digress.

    • @JWD1992

I think it is not regarded as such in retrospect these days. They call it "proto-metal" now, but obviously no one in 1968 was saying, "Can't wait for the metal coming next!" But I hear you. Wasn't "Blue Cheer" literally a type of acid?
And I love me some Hawkwind.

You need to do a reissue of Power Plant. Got the 2008 reissue and people want 250 and up for it.

Is there any hope in sight for those of us who are financially challenged? Also...how do you determine how much to pay for a large collection (100+ albums)?

    • @jimmycampbell78

If you’re financially challenged, stream- or collect CDs instead of vinyl.

Hello Dylan, one thing you could add to your videos is a short snippet of every album you talk about. This would make it easier to follow IMO. Apart from that great video as always! :)

Well, a couple reasons I don’t do that, first off, you can get copywriter strikes that way because the licensing on the songs, secondly, that would take hours to edit and I don’t have that much time to invest into it. I do my best!

'65-75 the true heyday of rock as art form. Still only half way through the vid, so maybe shouldn't say this, but have you heard the first 2 Traffic albums?

Hi! Is psych rock a phenomenon completely relegated to decades past? Do you recommend any contemporary bands in this genre?

    • @tanktuba
      @tanktuba 2 месяца назад +1

Lots of current bands have incorporated psych into their music. Try these albums,
Farflung A Wound in Eternity Hawkwind type space rock with psych.
King Buffalo Acheron prog rock and heavy psych.
Elder The Gold and Silver Sessions, prog rock with psych and krautrock.

"Aphrodites Child" was one example of Greek psych, which was in the vid.
For some examples from the top of my head, check out:
George Romanos "Two Small Blue Horses".
Four Levels of Existence "Four Levels of Existence".
Socrates Drank the Conium "Socrates Drank the Conium".
Pete and Royce "Suffering of Tomorrow".
