New subscriber here! Let me first say that you display a level of intelligence and articulate delivery at least a dozen steps above the average human being. And probably several dozen above the average we see here on ZooTube! So kudos on that!! A few comments.... Almost everyone has the same question about the "pipe organ." It's just his keyboard stand. He's hiding his Korg synthesizers back there. The pipes are modelled after a famous sculpture at the Sibelius Academy, the prestigious music conservatory in Helsinki. ///
You said you liked the orchestral intermezzo. It is worth noting that it is actually The London Philharmonic Orchestra playing most of the symphonic backing tracks. Tuomas (the keyboardist) writes all the music, including the orchestra parts, which are then arranged by Pip Williams who has a rather noteworthy background if you look up his bio. The LPO then records these backing tracks in the Nightwish studio. In addition, if you listen closely, you will also hear the Metro Voices of London gospel choir providing backing vocals, and on some songs, although not this one, they use the Young Musician's Children's Choir of London. ///
Speaking of that orchestral intermezzo, did you notice how quiet that crowd of 82,000 metalheads got to listen to the LPO for a full minute? You could have heard a pin drop! When have we ever sat in a room with only 20 people who would stay that quiet let alone 82,000? Impressive! ///
You are correct, metal, particularly symphonic metal, is waaaaay bigger in Europe (and Asia and South America) than it is here. Explains why Nightwish is a household word most everywhere else in the world but most Americans have never even heard of them. Sad. ///
About the lyric theme... Many of NW's songs paint an ongoing historical portrait of his (Tuomas's) heart. It's his personal diary of sorts. In this song, the ghost love is actually about a love that never existed in reality. It was one-sided. In this watershed event epic movie score-like masterpiece, the main character (a male even though he writes it for females to sing in a reversal of roles) finally realizes that he was in love with a ghost, a mere figment of his imagination and not the real woman who is very much alive and well. She just wasn't interested in such romance. He is devastated (to the point of contemplating suicide as you will eventually discover in subsequent songs) and laments the lyrics, "My fall will be for you. My love will be with you. If you be the one to cut me, I will bleed forever." And then in the final reprise of the chorus it changes to, "...You were the one to cut me, so I will bleed forever!" Very sad and moving how fragile we young men's hearts are when it comes to romance. ;( /// Keep up the great work, and I look forward to seeing more of your channel.

For some of us, listening to NW for the first time was a life changing experience. Not just another band. Forget genres and sticking labels. They encapsulate everything I ever wanted from music..and currently boast the best vocalist on the planet. Floor is a generational talent. I rarely listen to anything else. I searched for beauty and found my shore* (NW lyric). Hope you try a few more?

Yes, some of NW verses/phrases are so great they are worth to be a life credo... and the funny thing is that if i would hear the same kind of verses from other bands/people, i would probably think them being "manufactured" but coming from Nightwish, they feel really being meant, coming from their hearths...

Very surprised to see you drift from history to Nightwish out of the blue :D but ma I grateful! You are correct on the themes. Nightwish is heavily into the human condition, abstract ideas, and I love the "condition of the genius/dreamer" in their older songs. Nightwish is as much a philosophical and life analysis as it is eargasmic music.

Haha ... have been watching Nightwish reactions for ages now. Have been watching your videos for a while. Being from Leipzig, Germany I loved your Napoleon series. Never would have thought I'd get both in one! 😅
Oh and btw, the singer of Nightwish is married to the drummer of Sabaton. They have a daughter... 😅
Metal is one big happy family over here. 😁
As for female singers: well, there is no second Floor Jansen. She is considered to be an extremely versatile singer. But in general a female singer is almost the rule rather than the exception in symphonic metal. But also some other metal bands do have female lead singers and they are usually the ones I prefer. Call me prejudiced but I love female voices... 😅🤷‍♂️
My other favourite band next to Nightwish is made up of three sisters from Mexico. They play hard rock. So there are definitely women out there making this kind of music and I would say hard rock/metal and the people involved with it are usually quite open and inclusive.
The symphonic parts are indeed pre-recorded and not played live on the keyboard. One keyboard can't replace a whole orchestra AND choir.
So hope you liked it. Would love to see you return for more. Fair warning though: the Nightwish rabbit hole is a very deep one. 😊

    Brief history of Nightwish:
Formed in Finland around 1996 by classically trained keyboardist Tuomas, who wanted to form a folk/acoustic project. Guitarist Emppu and drummer Jukka signed on... 18-yr old opera singer Tarja Turunen became the singer. Her powerful operatic delivery inspired Tuomas to transform the Nightwish project into a metal band. First album 'Angels fall first' debuted in 1997 before the band ever played live... bassist Sami joined as Nightwish made their live debut that year w/ their brand of symphonic metal.
2nd album 'Oceanborn' in 1998 was followed by the 3rd album 'Wishmaster' in 2000 which became a massive hit in Europe and gained worldwide acclaim.
2001 saw Sami leave, Marco Hietala joined on bass and did male vocals w/ Tarja's vocals. 'Century child' in 2002 was a dark record reflecting Tuomas' mood of depression. 5th album 'Once' in 2004 was a global hit... Nightwish toured the US for the 1st time.
Unfortunately, a growing rift between Tarja and Nightwish resulted in the singer being fired in 2005.
Nightwish announced the addition of pop singer Anette Olzon from Sweden as the new singer in 2007... 6th album 'Dark passion play' maked a turn from the operatic vocals... the album became Nightwish's biggest seller. Unfortunately, more drama emerged after the 2011 release of the 7th album 'Imaginaerum' ... during the 2012 tour, tensions w/ Anette resulted in the singer being fired on the US tour... Dutch singer Floor Jansen was flown in to finish the tour into 2013... Floor and instrumentalist Troy Donockley were both added to Nightwish... drummer Jukka announced his exit. Kai Hahto joins on drums.
Floor's first album w/ Nightwish 'Endless forms most beautiful' became a massive global hit in 2015...the tour selling out worldwide. Nightwish celebrated 2 decades of the band w/ a tour in 2018.
In 2021, Nightwish released the double album 'Human II nature'... However, bassist/vocalist Marco Hietala announced his leaving the band... he was replaced on tour by (another) Jukka on bass for this upcoming tour...

Nightwish Army Texas reporting for duty. Expect more incoming. Welcome to the world of European symphonic metal. You should get extensive information from the general, Gabriel soon. Floor is amazing. Every tune from this show is fantastic. It is pronounced Yansen. Floor is married to the drummer of Sabaton. This is a great introduction to Floor and Nightwish, with multiple styles. Their songs can be very different. They will continue to surprise and never disappoint you. The song is about being haunted by a love lost and conflict of whether to rekindle, at least in my opinion. Tuomas’ lyrics are poetic and leave room for interpretation. Good reaction. Welcome to NW SoGal, you just met our 6ft Queen Floor Jansen (Dutch) 3rd and current frontwoman of the Finnish Symphonic Metalband NW. She is incredible. 10 Months earlier she came as a substitute for Anette Olzon, who became sick in the middle of a world tour and had to go to the hospital. NW called Floor and she said yes. She had to learn the setlist in 48 hours (there is a documentary about that) and did this on the flight from the Netherlands to Salt Lake City, where she joined the band on their way to Seattle for the next concert. GLS wasn't even on the list, but because she loved this song so much, NW put it on the list. The last part of the song the previous singer(s) didn't do, so she made it her own, with as result 10 months later at Wacken 2013 this MASTERPIECE. When she belt so high, you get shivers or goosebumps we call that a FLOORGSM. Congrats with your first one. If you want to react to more of them you can go with the links Gabriel Bardac gave you for a start. Greetings from the Netherlands South Division and enjoy the ride with us

When this was recorded Floor had been the replacement singer of Nightwish för just about 10 months. She did her first show in Seattle Wa on Oct 1st 2012 after the band fired Anette, their second singer. This was recorded Aug.3rd 2013.
This song wasn't on the set list for the tour originally since Anette didn't have the vocal ability to perform it. But Floor had heard the song when her first band After Forever" toured with Nightwish when Tarja, their first singer, was still in the band, and she loved it. So Floor asked Tuomas (the guy behind the keyboards) if they could make it a part of the set list. And they did, it was song number 13 of a 15 song set. There's som minor variations in the backing between Floors and Tarjas version, mainly that the choir have been reduced in volume. There's a video on youtube from, I think, Argentina, recorded Dec15th 2012. And there's one of Tarja doing it too. If you want to know more about how Floor got in to the band I can recommend a documentary, also here on RUclips called "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours"
    Wacken is pronounced Vacken in English. In German a W = V and V = F.
And I think Finland alone have more metalbands than the entire US. So yes, metal is a big thing over here. 😁
The pipes on Tuomas keyboard stand is a tribute to a Sibelius monument in Helsinki, Finland. (And it's good for storing a bottle of wine or two) 😉

darrkiee69 You forgot to mention that Floor changed the ending of this song entirely. All the notes at the end are written by Floor. The original version with Tarja doesn't have any vocals at the very end. Floor started freestyling at the rehearsels as soon as she joined the band and when she started adding her vocals at the end with that high note the rest of the band was like YESSSSSS!!!!! Please do that live from now on!!! And she started doing that immediately. There is also a video on youtube where you can see the evolution of Floor singing the ending of this song and finetuning it during every performance until this now legendary ending of GLS from the Wacken show only ten months after she joined Nightwish.

Now that you mention that Sibelius monument in Helsinki, I've been reading comments in some other videos saying that Tuomas is called the 'Metal Mozart'...Something I find a little off putting, if you consider that Mozart had little, if any, influence in the genre, say like Vivaldi or Bach...If one must give Tuomas a seodonym, i would just rather call him the 'Metal Sibelius'...That'd make more sense...And I bet he would like that better.. 🙂

Actually, "Nightwish" is a quite unique metal band that basically started the symphonic metal genre 25 years ago :) "Nightwish" is very much about storytelling, both musically and by lyrics. Their compositions very often are build according to classical music rules, that's why you can hear so many tempo changes. The lyrics in their songs are more like modern poetry heavily packed with dozens of metaphors and references to the books, classic poetry, as well as beliefs and science :) And there is a one-man behind all of that - the keyboardist and the band founder Tuomas Holopainen. For instance, they have song telling about an evolution ("The Greatest Show on Earth") as well as the song that is a tribute to Eugene Merle Shoemaker, an American geologist and one of the founders of the field of planetary science and the only one man in a history whos ashes are buried on the Moon ("Shoemaker"). Fun fact: Floor (the vocalist) in personal life is married to the Sabaton's drummer ;)

They where not really the first. Alot of bands did it way before. King Crimson, Rainbow, Manowar, Blind Guardian to mention a few. Operatic singing was nothing new either, there where bands like Theater of Tragedy that used it way before them. They are not really unique, not more then any other band. They did populise the genre though. And they are a really awesome band.

@@aeldin131 No I am not. I know that is what Yngwies music is called. But he did, very early, use full orcestras very early on, hence big part of creating the whole symphonic metal genre. Jens Johansson even called it "symphonic metal" in a intreview back in 88 when they released Odyssey. In the public eye, it is more proto symphonic though, which I can agree on.
Same with Stratovarius, they used pretty big arrangments in the early to mid 90ies, and it really came into their own on the Dreamspace album. And Nightwish was not even founded then. Blind Guardian released Imaginations from the other side in 95, which also hade a -huge- influence on the foundation of symphonic. Now, if we break it down even further, into the subgenres of symphonic, then you have Cradle of Filth, Emperor and Dimmu Borgir that started in the early 90ies. On the symphonic death metal you have Children of Bodom and Septic Flesh, which also started in the early 90ies. Symphonic Goth, it was more or less started with Theater of Tragedy back in 95.
It is just simple facts. Nightwish did not create the symphonic metal genre. As I have writen several times already, they just made it popular. It was founded at started in the early to mid 90ies, with bands like those listed above. And not to forget to add Japan X to that list as well.
It does not take away anything from them. They are still an awesome band, one of my favorites.

Welcome into the wonderful world of storytelling by Nightwish. About the lyrics: they are all a different deeply (frequently emotional) story, often in the form of a poem.
These are real flames. This burning bulls head is the official emblem of Wacken Open Air festival Germany.
Although the band is Finnish their 3rd female vocalist isn’t, she is Dutch. And yes, she is frequently featured in Ayreon too. Floor Jansen (pronounce Yahn-Sen) was born on Februari 21st, 1981 in Goirle the Netherlands. At the age of 16 she started her career as (initially) just as background singer from the Dutch metal band ‘After Forever’ in 1997 but real soon she took over the lead until early 2009 and the band fell apart. Parallel she studied at the Dutch Rock Academy in Tilburg starting in 1999 where she graduated in 2003 and spent two years on classical training with the National Conservatory. She studied Musical Theatre and one year Opera. She plays guitar, piano and flute and has completed 12 years of music studies. She’s a Light Lyric Soprano and her vocalrange runs from E3 to D6. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons.
On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ‘ReVamp’, which was disbanded in September 2016. In August 2010 Jansen was a guest in the TV program De tiende van Tijl. In that program she sang an aria by Puccini. From October 1, 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon as the singer of Nightwish halfway their Imaginaerum World Tour. On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she was to become the group's regular new front singer.

this concert (wacken 2013) is incredibly epic and deserves to be watched and reacted entirely, song by song, in particular I suggest these three songs: "song of myself", "storytime" and "ever dream"

Nightwish is the prototypical symphonic metal band. Their original vocalist was Tarja Turunen - she's an operatic soprano and so their style developed to use Heavy Metal instrumentation to support her operatic singing style. Floor Jansen is also an amazing vocalist, though. Nightwish has a bunch of great songs. My favorites include "Nemo," "10th man down," and "End of all hope." I would recommend any of them, but particularly "Nemo." After Tarja left the group they recruited Annette Olzen as their vocalist for a while and the songs they made at that time are closer to a conventional rock sound. Floor Jansen allowed them to return more to their original operatic style.

The song "The Trooper" (about a soldier during a battle during the Crimean War) would be a great starting point. Nightwish Shadow Unit from Estonia reporting in ! Valkyrie Goddess spotted ! Gabriel Bardac entered !
Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora.
Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6)
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.
This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken ( pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people. The fiery bull head is the symbol of the festival.

You now heard some of the skills our 1.83m Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen has to offer as the third and present singer of Nightwish. Just wait when she gets in full Dutch Windmill mode with her hair. She added the ending herself and this song has become their anthem since. As I am a Flooraholic from Utrecht, The Netherlands, here is some background information on her. She joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. My favourite song is 'Energize Me'. They made a very beautiful music video out of that: ruclips.net/video/fjm4BrNAf6s/видео.html
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also has some classical singing education. 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song, such as from full operatic to serious growls in seconds. The song 'Disdain' is a good example:
    ruclips.net/video/tIqzPXzhEuw/видео.html
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. S he had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ruclips.net/video/vhExkmWKMEU/видео.html
The lyrics of the songs of Nightwish are very poetic and the music as a whole is very challenging, but Floor pulled it off and she stayed for the whole world tour, culminating is this iconic Wacken 2013 Open Air festival which set new standards in Open Air concerts. It was obvious that the match Nightwish and Floor was made in Walhalla, so she became a permanent member of the band as the relationship between Nightwish and Annette was strained even before she got ill. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp'for a couple of years, but it became clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see:: ruclips.net/video/bAiPeSsqD-4/видео.html
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on RUclips. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa:, ruclips.net/video/QqdvFPBGN0c/видео.html
and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini: ruclips.net/video/UeTyAZtV5wI/видео.html
As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RUclips in the last year and a half and uploaded many interesting videos on her channel. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing this at Wacken Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish:. ruclips.net/video/QW_3F186_5Q/видео.html
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of the presents she left there. Floorgasm alert! Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughter Freja (turned 4 years last march), a horse and pony, a dog and a bunch of cats, she found this.

2:55 Yep. Not surprising though when listening to Symphonic Metal ;-)
Fun fact: The drummer of Sabaton is actually Floor's husband.
It's not that rare to have female vocalists in Metal, at least not in modern days and in Symphonic Metal (most symphonic Metal bands have a female vocalist) - it was a bit different back in the seventies and eighties though. And there's also women doing harsh vocals as well, not only clean singing.
Speaking of the professional level of female vocalists in Metal - they're ususally performing at a very high level, with many of them having classical training.
The symphonic orchestra you hear in this song is the London philharmonic orchestra by the way.

The lyrics will explain a lot to you....Tuomas, the keyboard player, is the genius behind the music of Nightwish....writer, composer, etc....the man is a genius when it comes to telling a story in music. Nightwish is unlike any other band that I have listened to, and become a fan of....and this stretches back to 1965, when I was 8 years old for me...as I started listening to bands like The Doors, Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Grand Funk Railroad, Nazareth, Boston....and on and on.
Enjoy the rabbit hole that is Nightwish! They have a wide variety of music...from the Symphonic Metal genre to softer, more emotional songs!

    Hello SoGal.
I have some info on Floor Jansen for you here.
She is married to Hannes Van Dahl, drummer of the Swedish power metal band Sabaton. Together they have a daughter. ( Freja )
Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6). Re-singing style ranges from opera to screams and grunts. She usually sings in English, in addition she has also sung songs in Dutch, German, Spanish, Finnish, Latin, Italian and Swedish.
Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour.
    Greetings from the Netherlands.

From my experiences of going to that festival 3 times (I live in England so it wasn't hard to get to) that certainly is a flaming bulls head, and when it really gets fired up (pun intended) you can feel the heat of it. And yes it does have Celtic sounding I'd say. Now you've taken the red pill you need to see how far down the rabbit hole of Nightwish goes. You may find yourself wanting more and more as you listen to them.
Plus, read Gabriel's comment, it has all the necessary links and songs to react to. Happy to see another fan!

To answer your questions regarding the bullhead, as you rightly identified it, those are actual flames and sometimes the bullheaded even spits flames where the spectators can legitimately feel the heat of the pyrotechnics! The bullhead in general is the logo of the Wacken festival. The devil’s horns or the horns of a bull as a hand gesture have been around forever in the metal scene and the festival takes place in a farming village in Germany, so the bullhead is quite fitting.

Indeed.. It's not a projection....Real flames, and, as Ove says, those flames can spew out on occasions, like you can see on the minute mark at 11:22... 🙂

Well you have Metal in the US too, but we got much more of it here in Europe, and only a fraction of European music cross the Atlantic and goes to the US. Have heard some people saying that the US is the North Korea of music, and I think that's about right.
    Cheers / B.

It's just that Metal has a "Bad Rep" in the US compared to in Europe, because if all those religious nuts that are offended by anything that isn't "wholesome" (for their value of wholesome) or looks like Rebelling against the Authority/society/etc. Lets say that Metal is a bit more "noisy/loud" than other genres so they might have gotten more reactions from the holier-than-thou detractors

@@tsandman In the 80's it was propagandized as "evil'...It was done as a way to divide cultures...Now metal is an after thought to such power brokers , they believed their job was done and moved on to other cultural divides...Metal is again rising and we can hope that it will be used to unite this time..to destroy those power brokers of course....🤘

Well, we did have the whole British invasion thing in the 60s, but I think the music industry over here is so big that it's hard for European music to get noticed.

This is one of the very symphonic performances of this group. You may have noticed that the vocalist is fairly versatile. They make good use of it and their "style" goes from pretty heavy ....to epic rock opera story of the entire history of man. There is something out there that will speak to you.

Metal is as widespread in Europe as it is in the USA, but much more stronger in Central and Northern Europe. In Finland, metal is part of pop culture. Search for "Metal Bands per capita map". The main difference is the better infrastructure. For example the two "Metal Major labels" Naplam Records (Austria) and Nuclear Blasst (Germany) come from there.

    • @Deilwynna
      @Deilwynna 3 года назад

not to mention other large european record labels like spinefarm (finland), EMI (the uk) and AFM (germany)

    • @Mischnikvideos
      @Mischnikvideos 3 года назад

@@Deilwynna There are many more labels that specialize in metal. Many bands are also with labels that are not specialized (like EMI). The success of Nuclear Blast (157 active bands) and Napalm Records (131 active bands) have drawn the global majors' attention to the market. They then bought up many of the small independents (like Spinefarm). We can only speculate about how far they can act independently. In the end, the owner will not want to pay on it.
Spinefarm is a small metal sub-label (78 bands including former ones) from Universal (one of the three global majors). They are only really active in Finland. Outside of that, they delegate the work to companies like Nuclear Blast.
Until its break-up, EMI was itself one of the global majors, now a sub-label of Universal. Not a real metal label.
AFM is a metal sub-label (83 active bands) of 'believe' (a French company that now also includes Nuclear Blast. Two metal labels in one company make no sense in the long term. So I'm worried about the future of AFM. Originally 'believe' only wanted to offer digital services for labels. With these and other takeovers, they have become one themselves. It is a large independent label with a decentralized structure.).

I discovered Nightwish by mistake ... because I got to hear a song and did not know who sang it. That song was of course " Over the hills and far away " .. which was just a drunken memory after a night out ... and I could not get the darn tune out of my head. One thing that I love about Nightwish is they put on a great performance and they put 110% into every song .. and once you hear the power and range of her vocals it becomes amazing .... and those lights and everything are just the finishing touch. Studio music is all fine and dandy` but you only really get to see or hear how Great any artist when they have to perform it live. ... another good song by them is .. Storytime. Metal and Heavy Metal have always been deep and Poetic in a very dark kind of way.

There is a good tradition of hard-rock and metal female singers in bands like Girlschool, Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Warlock, Within Temptation, Epica, Vuur, Halestorm and Tarja (ex-Nightwish).
