    It's not only the sort of pump, the thicker seal sometimes sold, is also a gamechanger.

    Interesting ATF dispenser Mike, make sure you pop the correct kettle on for a brew. Good to know re priming the pump. Presumably the vaseline is okay to mix with the oil or is that drained off and refilled again?

    ATF vs MTF
    I was expecting this debate in the comments.

      I got MTF for mine.

      When LR came out with MFT, I tried it as I was in the UK in that era and brought some back - I never noticed any difference
      Ashcroft's went from ATF, MTF and back to ATF
      I have always used ATF since my experiment
      My 3.9 Isuzu with an R380 have been on ATF since I rebuilt it 7 years ago, and not a hint of a problem
      LR MTF is only available at the dealers I believe
      I tried Redline MTL 75W80 oil, and apart from my wallet feeling the pinch at C$120/ US gallon + tax, I didn't notice any difference
      Hope this helps

      @@BritannicaRestorations i run Redline MTL in mine, Recommended for hotter climates from what i've read through most of the forums ( I live in the tropics,coldest it gets is 23C or so). Any thoughts on this?

      When I look at the MY96 workshop manual , it says ATF . However cleaver people say the ATF can corrode the brass rings and therefor use MTF . Isn't there any brass in an automatic?

    • @BritannicaRestorations

      I have never seen brass corrode in an LT77 or R380

    I always rotate to prime oil after assembling a G box. I am using MTF but lately I had some issues, the boxes seem too noisy, as if too much slack, never had this issue with ATF and I think I will go back to AFT. Kits from Ashcroft, shimmed to specs, new oil pump. Anyone else had this issue?

    Mike, you seem up to your eyeballs these days, but will you be doing more Sunday sort outs when you slow down?

    Not so fast ... What screw you loose to bleed ATF out on the floor?

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  Год назад

      There is a transfer adaptor on the side - on some vehicles this was a thermostat housing = unscrew the 2 housing bolts and when turning the box, oil should come out

    Got me worried now, I have never primed these when fitting boxes from Ashcroft, do they pack them with vaseline, or are they already primed after their own testing? Just fitted an Ashcroft box....

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  Год назад

      No idea. The gears in the new pump rattled like a pea in a drum.
      Soaked it in ATF prior to fitting, but I guess it all ran back by the time it was fitted.
      Maybe when the box is fully filled with ATF, the oil level will be over the height of the pump so should fill/prime on its own.
      I fill them with Vaseline, as I never know how long they are going to stand dry

      @@BritannicaRestorations If it wasn't over the level when fully filled, and if it can't prime itself (as per your test), then surely it'd stop working any time you parked up for months and then never re-prime itself? Or is there some well sealed non-return valve to keep it primed once it's primed?
