And I learned about the context of this this sermon and I'm blown away. His tact and passion and tone was so genuine and uncompromising. He never strayed from the Truth to "please" the congregation BUT it's so apparent that it was out of LOVE. God bless you Matt. God is good. God is God.

    My concern is that this church sounds like the audience of a comedy sitcom. Matt is pouring out his heart about the holiness of God and the seriousness of our misperception of Gods character and they are clapping and laughing at all the wrong times. It seems like Matt was very uncomfortable on this stage but a lot of times that's exactly where pastors need to be. I hope I'm making a wrong assessment of this church but if not I pray their perception of God grows in reverence.

    The Power of the Gospel - What I love about this video is Matt's heart clearly displayed through this message. As I watched and listened to this message I saw two aspects of the power of the Gospel. 1. The faithfulness of Matt to unapologetically carry the truth of the Gospel to the people of Elevation Church. BUT maybe even more challenging to me was 2. Seeing the Gospel change Matt's heart as he preached the message. From holy anger to loving shepherd all in one message! Humbled! Great job!

  • @alexmcintosh4783

    I believe some people are missing the point behind this message. Matt is preaching against the ideology that God’s soul purpose in life is to serve us or to ONLY bless us. Think about it. Furtick only preaches on how God can bless us, or how we can be blessed by God. I haven’t listened to all of Steve’s sermons to be fair however, a majority of his messages are the same theme of receiving a blessing. Matt is also against preachers who just preaches the cross was only for us and ends there. Hes preaching against the ideology that we as Americans especially struggle with that we are the center of Gods universe. No God created us to worship Him. He is God, He is Creator, He is Holy, we are NOT! Yes God pursues us but thats because we are incapable of pursuing after Him. Jesus came to seek and save those who are lost (Luke 19:10).
    Read the old testament. Its filled with Gods jealousy over Israel. He desired to be Israels only God. Yet Israel continuously, time after time sought after pagan gods. Now if God was for man, he would of just let them go and worship their gods because thats what made them happy. No! God is jealous and desires to be the only God that we worship!!! Thats what Matt Chandler is saying here. A lot of the gospel messages that we hear today are about what God does for us and not what about what we do for God! We go to church to expect a blessing not to give a blessing or be a blessing. Matt isnt saying we cant receive blessings. In fact, we already received the greatest blessing of Christ’s salvation on the cross. However, thats not enough for us! We want God to do everything for us! Thats not how God designed the church. He wants us to long after Him and desire Him with our hearts.
    He has angels singing around His throne day and night “Holy Holy Holy is the Lord God Almighty” yet He does desire us to sing that with our hearts because He gave us the free-will to choose. He is a good God who deserves our praise and HONOR! That is the heart of Matt’s message. To get us to stop thinking inwardly and to make us understand God seeks after us so that we worship and adore Him. Not the other way around.

    the music sounds so silly in the background of Chandler trying to tell the crowd the truth about Jesus. I love how the Gospel is not done in some sappy church setting but is real and like a splash of cold water to a person waking from sleep.

    this sermon even ministered to me...I serve the creator of the universe, I am called to be a living sacrifice for a Holy God, it's the LEAST i can do yet I make my walk with God Himself all about me. I pray God will give me and all of us a humble and yielding spirit towards His perfect will. His delivery was intense but it's something the american church needs to hear. And yeah, you could tell Furtick wasn't happy, he wasn't eating up what the guy was saying like he did with others. Ah well...

    This is absolutly fantastic. God alowed this to happen and it could be that there were ppl in that audience who heard this and came out of the false gospel world that this conference is built around. No, not only was Pastor Chandler not ever asked to come back but this sermon was scrubbed from Elevation’s site. I would like to think it was because Pastor Furtick knew he was dishonoring the Lord by not praying while Pastor Chandler but I know now that is not the reason. This perverse but persuasive “ Word of Faith” theology is unfortunately the false gospel Pastor Furtick preaches despite his thorough understanding of the Bible.
      And I am someone that worshiped and served her for 10 years. Things really got bad when Pastor Furtick began “TD Jake’s” worship.

      @Natalie Bishop Wow,wow & WOW!¬.
      What a reply :)
      That flowed like a cooling stream....Thats such an insightful assessment of Furtick ive witnessed to date! All praise be to God!
      I had no idea you knew him...(i live in the UK) but here in Bedford (Bedfordshire)there is the Kings Arms church which i attended from late Aug to last week..and the tone....the music; actions and sheer lack of scripture and experiential diatribe was en masse through the crowd(yeah!--woop!-woahhhh"
      (Being English may play a part in reserved behaviour ;)
      but ive noticed(and im late in the game-so its kind of new to me though ive kept an eye on matters over the years) this new wave of hipster churches and alternative method of worship.
      Ive even recently(this last week)had a major debate with the Pastor Steve Wilson at kings arms..regarding Furticks "jesus broke the law for love" sermon...And regrettably,as i suspected it would be.The pastors reply was sheer mental gymnastics,defending Furtick and bolstering the heresy!
      "oh,in a way..he is right....the pharisee' had the oral torah and taught laws of men -and jesus broke this" paraphrase...Yet!-as the pastor knew...F,was addressing THE law of God not man....and ,if youve seen the sermon youll know the rest. F used a parable of a lady rushing to the hospital with her child because it had fell 30ft from the monkey bars...and to because of love she broken the speed limits" need i say more! :/
      So....your reply is sheer music to my ears...ears wanting and seeking a clear appraisal on this guy(F) and youve done it for me!..
      its a solid expos'e(what you typed) on his ministry.
      I was struggling with small doubts whether i had gotten his number quite right...but now i know i have.
      I do pray for him...i mean no conceit...as i was as ignorant as the day is long...and am a baby in the faith at present..so to find such wonderful insight and to hear Matts sermon here..has grounded me in such a beautiful way!
      I know to some extent that F had a band,plays guitar etc....and i know the assembly(church) must be separated from the world..but i sense its crept in along with Furtick..
      Many many thanks for your fantastic reply!

    Matt Chandler brought the blindingly bright light of the Gospel to a very dark place. I agree with someone else who expressed amazement that the congregation doesn't seem able to tell the difference. The ability to think critically seems to be completely absent.

    I'm not better than anyone. In fact, I'm rather worse than a good number of people. I'm a sinner just like you and everyone else. But God chose me out of the mass of sinful humanity, to display His mercy. All deserve His wrath. None deserve His mercy. I am a recipient of mercy. It doesn't make me better, only blessed. There is no salvation except in Christ Jesus. Worshipping God and treating my neighbor with charity is useful.

    This WAS against the flow. :) "Fighting for the Faith" biblically reviews Elevation Church messages and shows that there are damaging mistakes preached there. Great that Chandler could get in a clear picture of the central point of the Bible and Gospel. Hearing either an inaccurate or super cloudy picture just wastes ones time. If the Bible is special, one should hear what it actually says. I thought I knew what the Bible was about for almost 20 years, but didn't have a single clue.

    I agree with 95% of Matt's message here, but I'd ask an important question that I hope you'll consider: what does my agreeing with him or disagreeing with him have anything to do with what the truth is or isn't? Following that, and given that thousands of other well-read, intelligent, spiritual men look at the same text and disagree with certain of Matt's views--and would use the Bible to prove it--how do you know, aside from it appealing your own personal and internal sense of logic or your personal sensibilities, that it is Matt's version and not someone else's that is right? If Matt holds himself out as a teacher, which he does when he presumes to tell people how God works (the solas), why He does (this sermon), and what the shortcomings of other teachers are (also this sermon), then he holds himself out as one to believe. He claims, whether he'll use these words or not, that people ought to believe what he is telling them. He trusts that what he is saying is at least right enough to lead someone to God in the right way (as he says here, to "motivate" them) and he believes at some level that what other people are teaching is somehow insufficient because otherwise there'd be no reason to go on correcting them with his better, deeper understanding (you can sense his urgency and apprehension of danger in this sermon). But who told Matt this? What assurance does he have that it is him, and not the other, who is right? Because when he looks at the Bible, he sees a particular message? So do they. Because he feels the Holy Spirit guiding him? They "feel" this, too. Besides it feeling or seeming right to him, then, what assurance does he have that he's got it right, and following that, what is the source of his presumption that it is safe to go out and lead people, convince people, "motivate" people, based on his own understanding? How is Matt sure that he preaches a Godly message, from the Scriptures, while other men preach a deficient message (also from the Scriptures)? Matt is teaching people certain things about salvation, about mercy, about grace, and probably about baptism, about confession of sins, about the afterlife, etc. Important things. He is teaching about the works, Word, and ultimately, the will of God. Who is he to do this? You might say "he preaches the Word of God", and in so far as he stood at the pulpit reading the Bible verbatim in the original languages, that would be true. But that is not what he does. He teaches an interpretation of the Scriptures, he exegetes the text for others, he draws conclusions and implications and teaches them. That is not strictly relaying the Word of God...that's teaching the MEANING of the Word, and again, that meaning is not above disputation because reasonable people disagree about what it is. It seems worthwhile to ask: who appointed Matt to be the teacher? How can I know as a common listener that he has been so appointed, or that others haven't? By his own account, here, he simply felt moved to become a teacher. How can I know that he is reliable and others aren't? Because he agrees with the Scriptures? That he is even compelled to argue for one view of Scripture vs. another shows that people are deficient readers of Scripture. By anyone's measure, LARGE swaths of people don't "get it" when they read the Bible. I may, therefore, have some ability to check Matt's reading against the text, but beyond what is glaringly obvious in it (that there's a God, that Jesus existed, there was a guy named Paul, etc.) my "checking" will eventually run into a wall built of my own sensibility, sense, pride, sin, knowledge, ignorance, linguistic ability, historical competency, etc., etc., etc. I do not trust myself to be a perfect quality control expert when it comes to maintaining theological standards that are consistent with the will of God. You might object that the "essentials" are very simple, but I would have to object that MANY Christians do not feel that way...teachings on the importance and substance of communion, the efficacy and meaning of baptism, etc., range from trivial to essential for eternal salvation, so even such a claim as the "simplicity" of the essential scriptural message is subject to many interpretations and the wages of getting that wrong may be, to borrow a phrase, "death". Therefore, while I feel drawn to a lot of what Matt has to say here, it is worth noting that I appreciate the message in many works of fiction, films, songs, etc. I stop short of proclaiming that Matt speaks "the truth" in any supernatural sense. I don't know that, and I don't see how he could reliably know it, either. The question then is this: is there a way that people can feel more certain, without relying on their own necessarily imperfect conception of what the Bible says, that they are believing and living and walking as God expects them to? Did God provide me with a judge besides my own sensibilities--and external judge that I can trust to teach me correctly without depending on my cross-checking their every word with my limited knowledge of the Bible ? It is a question worth considering.

      Hopefully, in the year that has passed since you posted this comment, someone has addressed your concerns. These are very good concerns as a Christian, because one of the things we should desire as Christians is the truth. Though, to answer your question, there are two simple qualities you need to look for when hearing a sermon.
      First. There is a method of interpreting scripture known as "exegesis (ex-eh-jee-sis)". This means that your interpretation of scripture comes not from a perspective of our current culture, our problems, or our environment, but instead it comes from understanding the world in which the scripture was born into. It is the polar opposite of "eisegesis (ice-eh-jee-sis)" which is what many megachurches tend to do with their sermons. Exegetical interpretations are the closest we can get to the true meaning of scripture when we cannot read the original text. When you understand the culture Jesus was preaching to, or the state of the churches that Paul wrote his letters to, and you understand the problems they faced and what they saw as normal or taboo, scripture comes alive and speaks in a way that it just can't when you see it from our perspective. If the sermon takes scripture and gives a modern interpretation, I would be cautious to accept it as truth. For example, if someone takes Romans 8:18 (NASB), "For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us," and then places modern struggles, such as a bad marriage or poor finances, in the place of "suffering" then there is a problem. Paul was the leader of the early church. To say life wasn't easy for him would be an understatement. He was beaten within an inch of his life, on multiple occasions. He was imprisoned multiple times, shipwrecked, and even executed by the Roman government. Life was torture and pain and suffering for Paul, but he kept on, knowing his work was for the Lord and by the Lord. He knew he would get nothing but pain on this earth, and so he longed to one day see the glory of God in person. He knew that even though he faced persecution that many of us could never dream of, and he faced it daily, those sufferings were not even worth comparing to how awesome it will be when we see God face to face. To do so would be to compare a cardboard box in the rain to a five-star, all expense paid trip to Dubai, except in Paul's case, the difference is infinitely greater. If the sermon preaches what scripture meant when it was written, and not what it would mean if it were written today, then I would trust it as truth. However, if there is any doubt, pray to God for wisdom. "But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him." (James 1:5 NASB)
      Second. This quality can be easy to spot, though, sometimes it can be difficult to discern. The sermon must always, always, always point back to God and it must be to the glory of God. The Bible is all about God, not about the men and women that followed Him. At the center of the Bible is the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and that is undoubtedly and inarguably true. You look in the Old Testament. Nothing but imagery and prophecy and setting the stage for what was to come. Look in the New Testament. All dealing with the aftermath of Jesus, building the early church in Christ's name, following the example of Christ, and so on. All of it points to Christ, and ultimately, it all points to God as the center and Creator of the universe and time itself. To preach anything that says "God wants you to be happy and to have a good life" is an indescribably horrible and inaccurate message. Our lives are not about us, or even the people around us, it is about God. Even Jesus Christ, who was perfect and would have had every right to take place as a king over every nation, did not even come to earth to do His own will, but the will of God the Father in Heaven. Now, if this world is not even about Jesus Christ, then why would anyone preach that God is here to make sinful man happy? If that were the case, I would rather have not been born, because Heaven would be nothing but material pleasures and superficial spirits as far as the eye can see, and that reality is absolutely sickening and horrifying to me. True Heaven is freedom from all sin and the pleasures of this world so that we can fully experience God, and know pleasure in Him far beyond our finite comprehension.
      To put it simply, if the pastor is not preaching scripture like it was written, and he is not ultimately and clearly giving credit to God for all things, you should have reason to doubt. If not, trust his word, because it comes from God's word. If you find yourself confused as to whether or not the pastor's word is trustworthy, pray to God and read the Bible in faith that God will reveal the truth. I hope I answered your question, but if not, I would be more than happy to try again.

    If your joy is not dependent on your circumstances but is the joy within, why not choose for your happiness to be dependent on your joy? That way you can be happy all the time, even when circumstances aren't so good. Some Christians can have their "deep joy" so deep that they can't even find it.

    • @vile2818
      @vile2818 6 лет назад

      I may be arguing semantics, but joy shouldn't come from within, but from God. If you meant from the Holy Spirit within us, then I would agree, but joy should be found in God who never changes.

  • @michaelprins_

    You're taking what he said completely out of context. He was saying that it's not all about him, the world doesn't revolve around him, like he was saying the whole rest of his second point that the universe doesn't revolve around us. Yes, it was nice of the church to show such great hospitality, but he was saying that he is no different than any of them. He wasn't angry at all.

    Honestly, this talk grinds on me and I see why they were unsure about posting it. This guy is just yelling at a bunch of people he doesn’t know and accusing them of being fake and all about themselves. “Lifting your hands up when you’re supposed to” could it possibly be that I’m just worshipping Jesus? Could it be that I’m fully aware how much I fall short and how it’s not about me? Apparently not.

    • @vile2818
      @vile2818 6 лет назад +2

      You may be fully aware, and you may be worshipping Jesus rightly, however there is a group of people that don't. Matt was preaching to them. There are people that are self-centered when they don't even know it. They are prideful, yet to themselves and others, they seem humble. They appear to love others, but they do it so they feel good about themselves. All may be good on outward appearances, but there is always something going on deeper than most of us realize. At the core of a faithful church-goer can be a prideful, selfish, self-centered fool. I am not judging anyone for being a fool, because everyone is lost until God comes in. I have been that fool. I understand that what Matt is doing is not judging people for being superficial, he is trying to help them understand what real faith in God is about.

    You (finally) surmised the correct interpretation of the word "dead" in the context I was using, as it's apparent that you aren't physically dead. And it's good that you give to charity. It won't rescue you from the wrath of God, but it's what might be categorized as a "bad-good work", that is, something that a wicked person (as God categorizes wickedness) does which might lessen the level of punishment he receives in Hell, though it will not gain him Heaven.
    Voluntary giving is not criminal.

    @iharber Is that why Furtick had his sermon edited out of the rebroadcasting? Apparently they wanted to make sure the "focus was on Jesus." So they actually removed Matt's sermon. That is why people are posting his sermon on YT like crazy. Because Matt is the ONLY one at Code Orange that actually preached the Gospel and rightly handled God's Word. And he exposed how Steven and everyone else there was mishandling God's Word. Steven Furtick is NOT Solomon.

    I think as Christ followers, regardless of what church u attend, we should all censor what we say, obviously in regards to others, but particularly church leaders. It doesn't matter if you go to The Village, Elevation Church, Lakewood Church or whatever, when we all condemn one another, it poorly reflects the body of Christ. Am i saying pastors shouldn't be held accountable for what they preach? No. However, the world is watching. And honestly we look more like haters than anything at times.
