An island in Andaman and Nicobar could enhance India’s strategic deterrence against China. New Delhi has plans to develop “The Great Nicobar” into a shipping and tourist hub. Due to its strategic location, it could also be used to keep China in check on the high seas. But the plan is being opposed by India’s opposition party - the Congress. It claims the planned infrastructure upgrades at the Great Nicobar poses a “grave threat” to the Island’s indigenous communities and ecosystem. Palki Sharma tells you more.

Great nicobar is irreplaceable. There is no other like it But an average Indian is not aware of the only island or landmass or a puny island of mighty seventh largest country India with koppen Geiger climate AF. Pristine equatorial ever green rainforests it has. The flora and fauna it has. The rich waters and corals. I'm a modi guy. But not on this matter. I like how he conveniently go to lakshadweep and preaches tourism based economy for it and on the other side mass destruction of everything on another very special island. I'm a patriot. I support a naval base there if they want one. Centre say a port is necessary, so be it. Well you have a port okay go get away with an airport. But that is where is must end. I see a lot of blind unaware people support this destruction without realising issues. The island is not meant to be an urban centre for various reasons. You can increase living standards of people without urbanization. The island is only 900 sqkm and the project requires 9.6 lakh trees to be cut and 130 sqkm of rainforest cleared. This is unacceptable.

The Great Nicobar would become the Hong Kong or Singapore of India, because of the port's strategic position near the dense global shipping route, and so it will benefit the tribes who have already given permission, because they are the one who own the lands as per the law, so 100% they will benefit, 3.Currently India has no such port that's on the global shipping route that's why we use Colombo Port which is on the global shipping route, that's why small ships go to Colombo, and take our shipments, and then reaches India (and suprise-suprise, who owns Colombo Port 👀)
