  • Hey everyone!
On this video I'm working on an asparagus fern that I put in a bonsai pot a month or so ago after transplanting it from a sad planter in the front of our house that I was turning into a sandbox for my daughter.
It's fun to give a plant a second purpose as a bonsai! Check out this simple trimming video of my asparagus fern bonsai.

I found a massive bushy one at a local shop. it basically did nothing for 3 weeks, and then suddenly started sprouting up like 12 shoots crazy tall! it looks like a dense rainforest. I think its my fav plant (covers maidenhair ferns ears)

I have had one for almost 4 years. I almost killed it twice but I put it outside over the summer and it grew like crazy. i just brought it inside for the colder months in Illinois.

I love those plants. It's a type of Asparagus plant actually, so maybe they should call it a Fern Asparagus lol. They love moisture so that's why it's drying out.

Didnt know this was used as a bonsai. Always thought of it as a plant you put in vivarium and miniature forest things.

Yeah I don't typically see these as bonsai! But I love how they naturally create "pads", so I thought I'd give it a try. It's so fun to experiment with plants that are little out of the ordinary. :) Thanks for watching!

I just got one of these plants from local grower. I love her, she is thick, lush and, as you said, her canopies are amazing. I'm not even sure if, or how to trim her because she's so gorgeous. Good Video, thanks.

So cool to hear! I'm so sad to say this one passed away. :( I'm not even sure what happened. It was doing GREAT! I might've let it dry out once and that's what did it in. Where I live, one day without watering in the wrong kind of weather and a plant is toast...it can be pretty frustrating sometimes. I'm always trying to learn!

I've been trying to find information on pruning this plant. Will new shoots grow out of the cut stems?

I bought a tiny ivy plant from the grocery store for 99 cents. Divided it out into 5 plants and am growing them out to try to develop into bonsi. Any advise ?

Very cool! Sometimes those super affordable plants make the coolest bonsai! I actually haven't done much ivy stuff yet, but I plan to as my in laws have a bunch of Virginia creeper ivy at their house that I've been wanting to try turning into bonsai.
I'd say just generally, try to get the trunks thicker, so it starts looking more "tree" like that just a small ground cover plant, if that makes sense. I'm not sure the best way to do that with ivy though. Hoping to learn soon!

@@PoorMansBonsai I just stick a bamboo skewer, or small branch and have it grow up the stake. It was first done accidentally. I wasn't intending it to be a bonsai or mini tree but I got some type of mini vining plant that I staked up to keep it off the soil and trail up the wall. I forgot About it and it ended up dying off from the bottom up. After trimming all the dead leaves off the bottom, it looked like a perfectly scaled mini tree. So i just keep trimming it that way and voila! Bonsai ivy! Lol
