  • This new MG Cyberster is not only absolutely stunning to look at, but IT’S ELECTRIC!
    Due to arrive in the UK this summer and with order books opening very soon, it’s time to get excited for one of the most spectacular cars to hit the roads in recent years.
    A convertible roadster which is also a Grand Tourer will bring with it the waft of electric vehicle silence and sharp driving dynamics. As an EV you can also benefit from tax savings when buying through a business or running one as a company car plus super cheap runnings costs you wouldn’t normally see with such a performance vehicle. 10,000 miles of driving could cost as little as c.£150 in “fuel”!
    Exact UK specs to be confirmed but we should see one battery, a large 77kwh pack and the. The option of either a RWD variant or a super fast 4WD option!
    Electric folding roof, sensible boot space and a luxurious cabin all included along with eye catching good looks.
    When it comes to EV roadsters, this stands absolutely alone in the market. It may be a Chinese funded company but the MG was designed in London and they very much want to keep the British brand alive.
    Let me know what you think and if you’re tempted to order one!
    Thanks for watching.

    The door movement is good because the doors tend to be longer on convertibles and others parking badly causes issues opening the door. I'd be interested in this depending on range, looks good in metallic cherry and driving I've seen handles well

    Yep. Sat in and played with it myself up at the EE show. The MG rep suggested I looked as if I wanted to drive it away. I nodded. It does look spectacular up close. I enquired about a ballpark price. Around £50-60k for lower spec. £60-70 for high spec cars. She couldn't say more. Fair enough. I think it'll sell by the truckload. Maybe a simple hardtop version as well?

      Tesla is an American company, so the US and Canada don't put huge tariffs on Chinese built American cars, like Chinese built American iPhones, etc.
      The tariffs on Chinese built Chinese owned cars are insane, if not outright banned. I think some Chinese companies are going to build their cars in Mexico in order to sell to the North American market with reduced tariffs!

    • @matty946
      @matty946 5 месяцев назад

      Technically, Polestar is Swedish and majority owned by Volvo, which is majority owned by Geely. I think that's why the Chinese companies 'partner' with Western car brands, because it gives them access to Western markets that would either be closed or have crushing tariffs.
      I'd love to get a Nio or Xpeng or Zeekr, or MG, etc... because of their relative value for money, but they haven't found a way to break into the North American market yet...

    Was impressed when I sat in this at the EE show on Saturday. Fit & finish of cabin was a massive jump up compared to the MG4. Almost can’t believe it’s the same company! Boot shallow but extended under hood area. No frunk🙁. My main concern will be price (MG guy was quoting £55k to £70k) and WEIGHT. Roadster should be light/agile which equals fun. Doors must add huge weight. Otherwise a brilliant car.

    • @xectia
      @xectia 4 месяца назад

      I saw one in Denmark, and it was quite beat up around the entrance, also on the leather. I know a lot of people are going in and out, but it didn't look too well. The rear boot also sound thin and hollow, had sharp corners you could cut yourself on, camera quality was the WORST I've seen in a car from the last 4-5 years (unacceptable), no electric boot and no frunk, which is a huge miss.
      I still like and want the car, but it's NOT a 55 (for large battery and rwd)-60k (for large battery and awd) pound car, which is the UK price.
      Should've been 43k base price, and 50k top trim price.
      If Porsche can make a decent convertible for a reasonable price, this will be DOA for that price. It's just too expensive for the quality and brand.
      I still don't know if it's made out of steel or alu, which is also a huge factor, since rust might eat it alive (depending on where you live).
      Overall, I was quite disappointed, and not just because of the price, but also because of the embarrassing quality.
      Doors are sick though.

    MG need to look very closely at the market right now before releasing this, the EV market isn't doing so well right now with these kind of cars.
    There's a back log of EV supercars and mid range performance cars that just aren't selling, dealers are struggling to get people to buy them and are unwilling to except them as part exchange because they are unable to find enough people to purchase them.

    As a GT car, it is similar to the Mercedes SL500. Which weighs, er, almost the same as the Cyberster.
    EVs are simply not that much heavier than EQUIVALENT ICE cars. They are a bit but it's not as big a deal as the EV naysayers would have you believe and so many other reviewers have fallen into the trap of implying there is some huge weight differential when there really is not.
    That aside, the Cyberster looks great but view to the front is a concern with the top of the screen apparently so low. Only one way to find out, but not too many around to sit in and try.

    At the Motorshow currently taking place here in Bangkok MG offered test drives to preorder holders and some youtube journalists. Since my wife is the actual order holder she drove the car. (they wouldn't allow me and I'm paying for it! 🙄 And,,,, it was in a large parking lot with cones. She drove it like a little old lady (which she is not 😉) She of course was quite pleased and exited. However a video done by a Thai youtuber hammered the car pretty hard in his test drive. He found the suspension a bit too soft with a bit excess body roll and wouldn't cinsider the car as a true "sports car". He believes the suspension is tuned more like a grand touring car. (Which makes sense as the car is not aimed to be a track beast). If the European journalists observe the same experience they might not be so friendly with their assessment. All other comments were were quite complimentary and the car got good marks in most other areas. But,,,, again this is in a big parking lot. A british youtuber out of China produced a few videos as he's taken delivery and he and his wife like it and are impressed but they too he admitted are fairly gentle with the car. The Cyberster "product manager" here in Thailand confirms the mid July initial deliveries and is quite helpful in providing quality information. 🤞🙏 Hope the car fulfills expectations. Oh, the feature of moving the car with the key fob in and out of tight parking spaces while not sitting in the car has been removed. He didn't say why.

    Practically speaking, what's the means of escape, should the car suffer an electrical failure to the door motors, for any reason? The TM3 has a mechanical release for manually operated standard gate-doors, but how could you manually lift these heavy scissor doors in an emergency? This is actually quite an important question, for obvious reasons. There must be a way, or the vehicle wouldn't be permitted on UK roads.

    Nice, but the doors look like a nuisance gimmick, just add weight and complexity and a faff, not sure what they add for that penalty

    🤔 What sort of cars do you think of as Grand Tourers? Maybe they want to chance a higher than expected price. They need a smaller MGF.

    Although it looks good I’d be tempted to wait and see what the Porsche electric Boxster and Cayman are like when they launch next year. While I expect they will cost quite a bit more to buy outright compared to the MG, the monthly lease/PCP cost may end up being similar. Also I do wonder whether the electric doors would get irritating if you want to get in quickly e.g. heavy rain.

    I like the non-red interior. And apart from the tail lights, it absolutely looks the deal. But I always wonder why car makers ruin it with the details? Those flimsy lids under the front hood? Seriously? And no frunk?? Geez.

    Owning an MG4 which is a good chunk cheaper I think the brand need to sort out their software and the dealership network to be asking for the sort of money the Cyberster is.

    Those doors are going to be irritating with the sensors stopping them for the slightest risk.
    Old MG had the B Roadster for the everyman’s sports car. That crown was taken by Mazda with the MX5. It seems appropriate for MG to take it back. Good luck to them!
    Can’t wait for the Tesla Roadster though! But that will be a different kind of beast…

      Just stand 1 foot toward the rear of the car when pushing the button. (just next to the door opening). It actually very easy. When the door fully opens you just step in. I've test driven the car and it's easy and convenient.

    Perhaps it’s different where you are but only off-roaders have 4 wheel drive…roadsters: AWD

    • @RSEV
      @RSEV  5 месяцев назад +2

      It’s presumably a less pedantic area than where you reside yourself. In the sense that all 4 wheels are driven by power I don’t think the terminology can be considered incorrect. If however it’s offensive to make an association with a triple diff-locked off road monster truck then I’ll try to use your alternative suggestion of “all wheel drive” in the future.

    • @viccionetti5907
      @viccionetti5907 5 месяцев назад

      It’s not a matter of being offensive. I was just respectfully trying to suggest a more accurate description. Many everyday 4 wheel drive trucks & off roaders (not just ‘monster’ trucks)
      can selectively choose between 2 and 4 wheel drive. With many everyday passenger, suv’s, sports cars, etc., the drive wheels are full time, not selective, all wheel drive.
      Virtually all manufacturers make this distinction in their marketing materials. That’s all I was suggesting.😊

    If they made the warranty on the doors and roof the same as the battery (8 years?), that would be good. I look at that stuff and wonder “How long until this stops working?”
    Every time I get a “supermarket ding” in my car, I wonder whether sensors to prevent car doors opening on an obstruction should be mandatory on all vehicles 😮.
    It was kind of comical watching Richard stand in front of the sensors and expecting the door to open.

    1. The doors are the worst decision they made on this car. Don't get me wrong. I love scissor doors - on a Lamborghini Aventador or a Lamborghini Revuelto because those are exotic supercars whose overall dramatic design works perfectly with the scissor doors. On this MG, nah, they just look like SEMA tack ons.
    2. The second worst decision is in calling this the Cyberster. What the hell is that?
    However, in person, there is no denying that the Cyberster looks quite striking - as long as you don't open the doors of course.
