Thanks for the video Richard. Think the message is slowly getting through to more and more people that 1) EVs work and are great to drive and 2) they save you a shed load in fuel and garage costs … word of mouth from family, friends and colleagues.
Interesting, it sounds a little like the used market want more non EV's, but they aren't there because new buyers are buying more EV's, I guess the incentives to buy a new EV are better then they are for a used one. I expect this is due to the fact (in the UK) for a business or company car driver to have an EV is much more financially beneficial (and thats where the new cars go), but the used market private buyer doesn't have big incentives (especially if they don't have home charging).
The naysayers complain that EVs are too expensive brand new but also complain that they depreciate too much. It's an absolute cop out of an excuse of course, with the price of used EVs being so low it's a no brainer to buy one. If you do enough miles, if you can get the credit and if you have access to home charging then you can essentially use your savings on what you would've spent on fuel to pay for the car.
Soon be able to get an early model 3 for £10k. You can go 100 miles for around £4. That 20p per unit at home. They seem bullet proof. And no services to do.
Many EV owners will say the same thing - public EV charging is extortionate. As soon as the cost exceeds 50p/Kwh - you might as well be running a diesel. IF the UK government want people to adopt, these numerous EV charging station suppliers need to drop their fees - on par with domestic rates (25-30p/Kwh) or somewhere under 40p/Kwh Again, charging station power below 50KW is NOT worth the time of day and many are not maintained. Distribution seems to be in public car parks - where you also have to pay for parking?! - Why? Another point... I know the infrastructure costs money to setup, but if EV drivers are paying over the odds, can we please have sheltered charging stations - like regular car garages? The whole water and electric mix doesn't fill me with confidence. More garages are open to working on EVs, but some have some strange ideas - like they're an alien technology. EVs have suspension, brakes etc, that all need maintenance. That could be down to individual attitude or lack of knowledge, but if I'm paying professional mechanic to change parts (un-do bolts) at £120/hour (inc. VAT 20%) how can they say no? What's the average UK wage per hour again? £15? Garage fees need to be addressed, or VAT removed for garage fees. The future of car use in the UK will be mixed - diesel, EV, Hydrogen, inc. hybrid engines. All developed nations are stomping blindly towards this agenda, 2030. Why? Because a group of wealthy individuals say so? The WEF are out of touch. If they want sustainability, there's technology available NOW that will make electricity free for everyone. But, no. They just want to control the technology and become even more obscenely wealthy.
I share your concerns that the Ev agenda is not currently looking at mobility for those who are not wealthy. That deserves a lot more attention, and I suspect that is one reason why the used ev market will remain poor for a long time because the bottom end of the market does not own a charging station at home. But I certainly wouldn't argue that the EV agenda is determined by “the rich.” The truly rich (top 0.01%) actually benefit from the current status quo and are threatened in the long run by the EV agenda (Exxon, Shell, etc.). It's lots of different scientists, with fine salaries (but certainly not the rich) who just gather facts which they then use to make a very informed estimate for the future. These have been telling us for a long time that if we do nothing we won't be able to enjoy our cheap ICE cars in the distant future either.
A quiet summer is understandable, but I think you are right, demand for used EVs is increasing because of increased supply and lower prices. The government has chosen to put support for new EV purchases into business purchases, but that is sensible because companies look at total cost of ownership, not purchase price. Lots of cars being leased by businesses means lots coming off lease in good condition only 2/3 years old - and those are the good buys for private buyers
For years it has always been the case of buying a 3yr or 5yr old luxury car. As the savings are massive. BEVs are even better as the technology will be updated on the luxury cars first. A Samsung S24 Ultra may be £1,400 in May but by December it is down to £1,000 and only £800 by the release of the S25.. No boss wants the "old" Taycan! As soon as the new one is out the old model is even more affordable.
It’s amazing that people seem to forget this, the luxury cars have never kept their value that well, don’t know why people think that will be any different for expensive electric cars.

Insurance half the price of my Tesla. I’ll see what tech is around with Tesla in 2 years before maybe jumping back in with them.
I drove a tesla model 3 in the states and absolutely loved it.I was looking to purchase one as a result of that, however uk market prices are still ridiculously higher compared to the states as well as the inflated insurance cost in the uk that kills any potential benefits on fuel savings! Not to mention the introduction of the road tax for EV's As I said I'd love to buy the model 3 but when you way up all the good and bad points, I am struggling to find a reason for changing to electric!! Speaking on benefits for limited companies isn't a deal breaker to the everyday day customers. Let me know if I am wrong please
Tesla have the corner in the UK EV market. The 3 is decent. I recently bought a 7yo S75D and love it. It has over 100k on the clock. But... you cannot judge an EV by the odometer - the battery is the key. Most Tesla's lose 10% of range within the first two-three years, if it remains stable after - 1-2mile loss for every year, you can't go too far wrong. I still get a 270 mile estimated range - realistically, that's 230 miles with mixed driving. Keeping the battery topped up no more than 70-80% also increase battery life. It depends on the miles you do in a typical day. I do 40-100miles, and when at home, only charge using a 3-pin plug - charging at 7mph. For longer trips, there's Tesla's charging network and public charging (Zap Map is your friend). I'm out of Tesla warranty soon, but have no fears or regrets about the battery, or if anything should go wrong, there are people out there who can help. The motor industry has been slow to provide EV services, but they have to catch up, or go extinct. Also - I'm no eco warrior, I just wanted a fast car!

What’s labour going to introduce in October‘s budget regarding electric vehicles? The road tax pay per mile? In April isn’t the car tax for EV is going up as well ? this is putting me off buying an ev at the moment, pure uncertainty
Am I the cause? Tempted to churn my current leaf into the 2nd hand market and get something else. It’d either be a MY new or something else used. Can’t cost justify it though based on how much I’ve spent on the leaf in the past 4yrs. I really need to keep hold of it longer to wring the value out. If I buy something else I want it to tick more boxes on practicality and usability than I have now. I can’t see many that really beat what I have at the moment for the price.
Richard's market health digest videos are always fascinating. The market is developing as logic would dictate, and is no surprise. New EVs are expensive for private buyers, which is not a fault of the makers, but the fact that the new tech just costs more, per se. However... govt. tax relief has always been designed to cushion that cost for company car drivers, who would need to be insane, almost, to choose a non-EV. Ergo, huge numbers of EVs get into circulation, and now's the time they're starting to come off-lease in bulk, and going into the used market, hence high supply of used cars, and low residuals. Which stimulates the used EV market, so private buyers can now afford to give them a try. Over time, new prices WILL fall, battery tech WILL improve, people WILL move over to EVs for private new purchases. But battery tech & price reductions MUST BOTH occur to make this happen.
Richard just to say thank you so much for the Tesla referral code. You have persuaded me at last to purchase a Model Y, which I have done today. Cheers!
Brilliant and a very informative video , I just taken the plunge but must admit after a test drive looking forward to my new ev van , I’ve ordered a vw I’d buzz cargo which should be here December time
Looking to get a used ev. Any thoughts on an audi etron 55 sports back? Will be home charging and driving low miles mostly? Got around 27k to spend. Thanks
NGL interest rates are crazy. Some are cumulative 25% interest and fees over 4 years. People are going to see £5-8k added to 2nd hand EV prices over that time and just don't want to pay over the odds for a depreciating asset. An EV at £20-£25k is a bargain, add on fees, interest etc and you're effectively paying very close to brand new price for a 3-4 year old car
July and August have historically always been quiet months for retail in general. School holidays so families are going on holiday instead of buying cars or furniture etc. This year has been a perfect storm due to the election, euros, olympics, riots and the cost of living issues...
Doesn’t make sense tho with demand. Take an electric car and the exact equivalent of petrol or diesel. The EV equivalent is a fraction of the cost and is the supply of the non ev version the same or less? If less it’s understandable
The second hand EV market is surprisingly tight in Ireland. Brexit has made importing from Britain more difficult. We can import from NI but need to be careful
Insane 9-10 APR everywhere on used EVs, think it’s bumped up to direct people to purchase new EVs and the big brands can meet their quotas for the year.
Insurance, for me this means a diesel makes more financial sense, v a model s 75d. Probably a merc e350 estate due to cheaper upfront cost and less insurance per month. So, insurance is destroying the environment basically. I also notice that last Xmas there were 320 Tesla model s on AT. Now there’s 170 and they are cheaper than in the summer ?
If you’ve bought a BMW iX1 or any other vehicle which is part of their brake failure recall -then even though only a few vehicles have hit the problem: nobody will buy your BMW dealers are refusing to buy them back because they know they can’t resell them
If you’re a cash buyer then second hand is an absolute no brainer. If you want to take out finance or a personal loan to purchase a second hand car then the interest rates are just so stern it makes it less appealing. My lease with Tesla runs out next may and I’m keen to secure a second hand deal, as long as the interest rate isn’t outrageous.
The main problem of used EV is the battery warranty is getting shorter and shorter ... and of course the battery module change is not cheap after warranty :-)
I'm not sure if that is correct, the latest data I heard was that the average new EV now has a longer battery warranty, then ICE cars have engine warranty The price to replace is pretty similar, when its apples for apples. So a quote for a new engine is similar for a new battery, the price to refurb a battery is similar to refurb an engine etc......
I think the solution for people without off-street parking and who can’t guarantee a regular parking place are the NIO battery swap stations, and it sounds like NIO is bringing these to the UK once they can get the permit clearances etc. they work very well in North Europe and the 4th generation stations will change the battery in about 2 mins 30 for either a 75kWh or 100 kWh battery and without the driver in the car. They’ve also recently announced a 150kWh 600 mile range car - should last a normal commuter 2/3 weeks between recharges
I do not have off-road parking. My local authority has authorised cross pavement charging using a proper cable protector. I have been doing this for about a year now with no problems.
I have no off road parking either. My council doesn’t allow cross pavement charging even with a protector or trough. I asked about the overhead swing arm but that was refused too. As I live in a village they don’t have any plans to put in public charging either. Nio swap is a brilliant solution I have followed for a while hopefully it will roll out soon. Meantime I have to wait six months for delivery of my hybrid Jeep Avenger. Dealers are having to sell their ev quota to meet government targets and hybrid and ice are way down the pecking order which in turn is bolstering the ice second hand market.
hi there, can you really trust autotrader data knowing that pricing is used to afect the algorithyms ? Got tired and disappointed in in ev pricing so ened buying a new Kia picanto for £17k as a the daily run about and the jold azz as a work horse.
well, I've been looking at the Leaf, i3, Soul ev and Niro market pretty hard for the last month and I've noticed that the used prices have hardened - increased is this Autotrader software interference?

Having bought a Tesla a couple years ago. and now sitting in 2024 realising how Tesla "effed" its customers, thats kinda hard. reason people are not buying EVs and especially not Teslas is that no one can afford the huge depriciation on these cars. my goverment wants people to buy EVs but no one wants a car that loses value so fast
Hi could you do a video on charger please? I’m moving to a EV but confused around what charger to get fitted at home. I see Tesla sell their own but it’s confusing. Any help appreciated
This one might be useful. But home charger is usually a type 2 and the Tesla unit is good plus works on all cars. ruclips.net/video/sI30YAn2fMU/видео.htmlfeature=shared
@vxnova1 Basically a new car that a dealer registers to artificially inflate their sales numbers. These cars can't then be sold as brand new even though they will have very little mileage on them. Means that a buyer would be classed as the second owner as well but not really an issue plus you can save thousands compared to the "new" price.
You go into any EV articles it can be a financial webpage you name it and the comments absolutely bash on about EV batteries not lasting past a few years, there is no charging sites, buying a EV kills a dolphin honest are you a Dolphin killer….. The usual mad stuff that EV sales have to fight against. But the newest they take great pleasure in is EV sales are crashing because no one wants them even when you say all car sales are down.
People should wait as battery technology will change just like Porsche have done with the Taycan. Many manufacturers might not be able to replace your EV battery after 8 years. VW have stated the new ID3 battery can NOT be fitted to the older version.
@@TerryHickey-xt4mf Yes and your 8 year old EV with 50000 will not be doing the 200 mile range it did on day one and will not be able to get a new battery because the technology has changed.

@@philipgower2000All UK DC chargers are either CCS or Chademo, Newer Tesla cars are all fitted with CCS sockets. What stops you using an Ioniq on a Tesla supercharger is that Tesla keep most of their superchargers for their own customers. I can’t see many that really beat what I have at the moment for the price.
great market update 👍
Good to see healthy supply-demand for other brands like Nissan too. Lots of LEAFs being bought as a first EV on the used market to test them out?
Another great informative video
Other than Tesla's what other evs are selling well for you
Also have you considered more solar & batteries?
Richard just to say thank you so much for the Tesla referral code. You have persuaded me at last to purchase a Model Y, which I have done today. Cheers!
How much did you end up paying for the car .
@@ianbrown_ £43990. Tesla Long Range RWD.
Cheers guys 👍
Brilliant and a very informative video , I just taken the plunge but must admit after a test drive looking forward to my new ev van , I’ve ordered a vw I’d buzz cargo which should be here December time
I wish we could buy them here in NZ without having to rob a bank first.
Believe me I had to rob a bank over here too 🤦🏼
Thanks for the information
In Canada the Model Y just jumped up in price by 4k CAD. No interest rate deals. It's like they've given up trying to sell cars here.
Looking to get a used ev. Any thoughts on an audi etron 55 sports back? Will be home charging and driving low miles mostly? Got around 27k to spend.
Thanks
If I was to buy a 2021 model 3 LR today; would I still be able to buy the acceleration package?
Thanks that's all I wanted to know
Doesn’t make sense tho with demand.
What is the most reliable second hand ev in UK
The Model Y market will drop when the 2022 leases / business leases hit the market in Q1 2025

Insane 9-10 APR everywhere on used EVs, think it’s bumped up to direct people to purchase new EVs and the big brands can meet their quotas for the year.
Yes that’s about best can get on used market since interest rates rose.
Low or 0% is simply manufacturers subsidising the loan
Insurance, for me this means a diesel makes more financial sense, v a model s 75d. Probably a merc e350 estate due to cheaper upfront cost and less insurance per month. So, insurance is destroying the environment basically. I also notice that last Xmas there were 320 Tesla model s on AT. Now there’s 170 and they are cheaper than in the summer ?
Hi Richard, I enjoy the videos. I've just used your referral link, thanks 👍
If you’ve bought a BMW iX1 or any other vehicle which is part of their brake failure recall -then even though only a few vehicles have hit the problem: nobody will buy your BMW dealers are refusing to buy them back because they know they can’t resell them
I just brought a Model Y DM-LR '72 plate with 11k millage for £34k with tow-bar. I thought it was a bargain! Seems I was right. DM-LR

I’ve lost so much money since I bought my EV last July I can’t switch cars even though I want to.
well, I've been looking at the Leaf, i3, Soul ev and Niro market pretty hard for the last month and I've noticed that the used prices have hardened - increased is this Autotrader software interference?

Great video
Having bought a Tesla a couple years ago. and now sitting in 2024 realising how Tesla "effed" its customers, thats kinda hard. reason people are not buying EVs and especially not Teslas is that no one can afford the huge depriciation on these cars. my goverment wants people to buy EVs but no one wants a car that loses value so fast
Simon who drag race with Matt Watson on Carwow?
Used Tesla Model Xs have now broken through the 20K barrier, how long until they hit 15K? 😮😮😮

That 2nd camera is just irritating lol
Hi could you do a video on charger please? I’m moving to a EV but confused around what charger to get fitted at home. I see Tesla sell their own but it’s confusing. Any help appreciated
This one might be useful. But home charger is usually a type 2 and the Tesla unit is good plus works on all cars.

what’s a pre reg?

Your comment makes no sense

People should wait as battery technology will change just like Porsche have done with the Taycan. Many manufacturers might not be able to replace your EV battery after 8 years. VW have stated the new ID3 battery can NOT be fitted to the older version.
battery tec will continue to rapidly change for the next decade, just like other new tec devices.
@@TerryHickey-xt4mf Yes and your 8 year old EV with 50000 will not be doing the 200 mile range it did on day one and will not be able to get a new battery because the technology has changed.
Just an observation - The new Labour government campaigned on restoring the 2030 mandate. Of course that decision might be moved to a 2nd term. We'll see, I guess.
My guess is that most countries will postpone that deadline considering recent trends.
@@TerryHickey-xt4mf I suspect that trends will take an upturn once BEVs go below ICE on price. And that's almost here.

That doesn't answer my question
@@philipgower2000All UK DC chargers are either CCS or Chademo, Newer Tesla cars are all fitted with CCS sockets. What stops you using an Ioniq on a Tesla supercharger is that Tesla keep most of their superchargers for their own customers. The only Tesla adapter is one that allow older Teslas (I think model S and X) to connect to CCS chargers to their NACS socket.
Hybrids aren't even real EV's cos they still have an ICE engine
