No thinner required with new paint, just give it a stir. Old paint may have a skin on top and when removed a little thinner may be needed. See my other video “ Painting rusty steelwork with Hammerite”
When I bought the paint, I did it for the fast drying, I did not have any faith in its result, and I was wrong. Hammerite It's the best and most economic product on the market. I painted my lawn chairs and tables in 2014, they still have shine and have not even yellowed. And of course, none of them have rust. Seven years, what other paint can withstand that?, none.
How long does the Hammerite Direct to Rust usually last with the type of preperation you've done? I used it on my old 1930's washing poles in my garden after removing all the rust with a brass brush wheel on an angle grinder but not sure how long it will last in Scottish weather.
Thanks for your comment. A wire brush is usefull but I find if you have flaking paint the wire brush slides over it. It's important to get under the flakes and the file does the job.
Thankyou so much for this excellent video, really helped me work out what to do to refurbish my rusted bbq

Still Game? I was waiting for Jack and Victor to come into shot!
Great video and very helpful thank you
Thanks for this great video
How many coats do you need to apply? They recommend two but I'm not sure if this is to make you buy more paint?
Thanks for your comment. I find 2 coats best on rust patches but 1 coat fine on existing paint provided it’s sanded first.

Is it necessary to use paint thinner?
No need for thinners with new paint, just give it a good stir..
Do u need to mix with thinner ?

Thanks for your comment. You must have done a good job on the lawn chairs to get them to last that long, well done.

It can vary a lot but should last a few years with 2 or 3 coats on badly rusted areas unless ropes cause wear where they are attached, cheers.
Hi Bert, thanks posting your video. I can see you sanded the rusty patch before you painted but did you sand the rest if the fence before painting?
Definitely sand all old paintwork to get new paint to adhere, otherwise it might start to flake off later.
Thanks for the quick response Bert. Much appreciated.
What's the best grit sandpaper for rust removal?
I find P80 grit good for rubbing down rust. Go for industrial quality, not cheap stuff as it wont last any time.
@@bertfullerton6043 thanks
Fab 😊👌
Steel wirebrush would make rust removal easier and quicker

Any old iron, any old iron,
