    Concentrate on removing all signs of rust such as blistered or flaking paint before applying any rust primer. For the primer to be effective, it needs to be in direct contact with the metal surface, if not, the primer won't protect the metal.
    In areas that aren't rusty, but you want to overpaint, scratch the surfaces using a wire brush and wire wool to create a key for the new primer/paint to bond to. Make sure any paints you're using are compatible, otherwise they'll react with each other and blister.

      Don't we use turpentine oil with primer and paint?

    • @DrapertoolsLtd
      @DrapertoolsLtd  4 года назад

      @@A0D0D7Y The Oil could be used to clean the gates before priming and also used as a thinning agent for the primer.

    WOW! THAT was thorough! GOOD job! Most thorough! A LOT of work! I HATE this project!
    I think they gave me wrong paint. I thought it would be "alkyd", but they gave me latex--at Kelly-Moore. And it is STREAKING!

    do you need to remove the old paint first before applying rust primer? or just the spots that are rusted

    • @ginafarducci1600
      @ginafarducci1600 8 лет назад +6

      Use the ends of the wire brush bristles, not the sides as shown. The sides will just burnish the rust that you want to remove.

    What filler material can be used for sections that have eaten away?

    • @DrapertoolsLtd

      A metal epoxy putty should do the job, you should find there are various makers selling this. We have recently used a small tube of the Evostick one and it worked well on a copper pipe repair.

    is this technic the same for aluminum gate?

      There are generally two types of metal - ferrous and nonferrous. A simple test you can try on your gate is to place a magnet on it. The magnet will stick to ferrous metals such as iron and steel, but fall off nonferrous metals like aluminium and zinc.
      Most metal gates are manufactured from iron, if yours is bare metal and silver/grey in colour it could be galvanised steel and not aluminium.
      The result of the magnet test will indicate whether you need to buy metal paints for ferrous or nonferrous metals.
      Hope this helps.

    Can't you not just use rustoleum spray paint? Wouldn't that go faster and give a more uniform look? I once painted a gate before using oil paint. First coat took me 4 hours.... I just told me father to add the second coat when I am gone... I couldn't do it...

    • @DrapertoolsLtd
      @DrapertoolsLtd  5 лет назад

      Even with Rust-oleum, it’s better to remove as much corrosion as possible for a better, longer lasting result.

    I have a hard time with this lady's accent. What does she have in the bucket? At 0:50, she says what sounds to me like "pick a dry day and make a start by using wool flakey water to wash off any dirt and algae what would be the pressure washer." This is the first and only mention of a pressure washer in this video and I am wondering if there are some steps involving a pressure washer that are described in another video. At 1:37, she says what sounds to me like "take the rag with some wipe in it"; I have no idea what she is referring to. Her accent sounds British. Are the products she speaks of British products? If so, what would be their equivalents in the U.S. A.

    You can not paint the gate properly unless you turn upside down. Because you WILL miss the parts of the gate,

      True, but these areas are generally protected from water which is needed to form rust. The main damage occurs on the top surface where the water can't run off.
