Very curious why they wouldn’t begin with Norrin Radd character since it’s most common iteration and Fantastic Four is suppose to be in the 60s and her version isn’t seen till much later.

I am not a fan of the Pedro Pascal casting. To me it just seems like a lazy casting choice. Like they thought "we have this guy on so many other franchises already, let's just put him in the MCU too. I am sure the fans will love it."

CONSIDERATION: Character Iconography. This aspect seems to be missing from a decent amount of race/gender bending conversations. As a branding professional and storyteller, the way in which a character or IP is introduced to the public creates an ‘Imprint’ that sticks with the public, and the elements that make up the whole become part of the iconography of that character or IP. Example, a super-muscular Professor X, a blonde Little Mermaid, a balding Superman, an all European cast for an Avatar The Last Airbender adaptation, Mario without a mustache, etc. Some variation can be great, too much variation can quickly become off brand.
I agree w/ Winston too if this was Phase 1, 2, 3 you got a lot more leeway with me to trust that you're changing things for the betterment of the story or the movie overall. Things haven't been great lately so the more you veer away from the source materials that I know and am comfortable with the less excited/happy I am about it.
But yeah there's nothing about Surfer's story that dictates he's a dood. If I remember right Norin Radd did it for love of his planet and love of his wife there's no reason to not flip that to husband or wife or whatever. It really just comes down to lack of trust in the brand's decisions lately that makes me wary.
Well it is possible with unknown characters or secondary characters but not with one of the iconic classic characters especially for people that have grown up watching ff cartoon show and it's spin off series Silver surfer
@@brancorocks 100% agree, it works for probably tertiary and on characters cause even someone like Heimdall who I was hesitant when they race swaped him but Idris Elba did a killer job as him (shocker right lol). And I know people are quick to grab pitch forks when you say "Why can't you just give me the characters I grew up loving?" But I really don't get why people have issue with that? Like I like this character and this is how I remember him... i fyou want to do a what if story or something and spin some stuff go for it... but when we get adaptations I'd like them to err more on being close to the source material the flipping things... and like I said they had a lot more lee way when they were hitting em all outta the park. @@Grimbear13 exactly my gripe right now with all the stuff that's been revealed with the leak of Disney documents it's been proved that they are garnering for ESU scores based of which they get high investments and tax breaks and during a time when none of their movies have worked at that time they decide to go with the least worked character cause remember they introduced her and she wasn't as well received as the OG surfer there has been stuff done with surfer after that like Silver surfer black where he gets to interact with the venom symbiote and stuff like even then nobody even though of including her character and now all of sudden they decide to make her one of the main characters of the movie even before they OG guy that started it all...I don't mind doing something out of the box but don't do it to iconic classic characters....like I'll even not mind a female doom but not as a character in the first movie but rather as a spin off character like there was cosmic interference or she is related to Vitor von doom in some way hell even a what if story I'm fine but not as a main universe story

Someone could come along and surprise me with a performance that nails the Doom vibe as a woman... but after 2 failed attempts at Victor Von Doom is it really too much to ask for a comic accurate Doom before we start messing with the formula? Silver Surfer is one of my favorite characters. Silver Surfer Black is my favorite comic run ever. But she's not Norrin. Different character. Another character that has been around for over 40 years. A love interest of Norrin. And it sounds like she's from another universe. And not our 616 Silver Surfer. And even if not, she's a different character. Simple as that. Let's judge it based on who she is playing and wait to judge.
i think mcu has just lost the good will of the fanbase because the fanbase people don't want to admit it the majority does not want the girl surfer they want the og they don't want the movie the marvels there fanbase it not built with people that like these choices and if they want to go down this way with there films from now on then they need to cut the budgets in half and then cut it again

Honestly when I saw she was cast I admittedly sort of whinced but now that I actually think about it and think about how great of an actress she is I'm less worried. I watched Ozark from day 1 and waited for every single season and her Ruth character is fucking phenomenal. Everything about how she played that character was so perfect. I haven't watched her other series but again I hear she's fantastic in that as well. So if she brings that level of professionalism and more important believability and commitment to the character then we may very well be in for a hell of a treat. I refuse to have any sort of discourse that have anything relating to agenda's or straight up misogyny. I want real discourse not any childish nonsense, I think she and the rest of the cast will absolutely bring their A games because let's not forget like the guys just said. This is Kevin's baby and our first potential soft reboot. Either way, im excited.
I won't watch this with a female silver surfer. This nonsense needs to be stopped. This trend among modern feminists where they imbue every show or movie with misandry, which has become a problem for fantasy and sci-fi fans like me. What's worse is that if we comment on it, we're often called misogynists. This needs to stop. It's also extremely hypocritical and devious of them. They've become the very thing they hated in men. Stories used to have great women and men as characters, but now we see an all-woman casting and a repeating theme of demeaning men. True equality would equally represent both males and females, not just one or the other. This is creating more cultural problems than it's solving. I think Hollywood needs to stop lazily shoving their hypocritical political beliefs into their productions. It breaks the immersion and creates more division and culture wars. Good writers with skill and care can create uplifting stories that have great plots, world-building, and character development. This is just fan fiction with surface-level writing that uses virtue signaling to attack anyone who critiques it.
I will take that challenge so here we go: No problems with her playing Shalla Bal but I completely agree with Kristian that if this is the approach they take then Norin Radd should be introduced along-side her as well. Shalla Bal is Norin Radd’s soul-mate and they belong together despite the comics tragically and consistently splitting them up due to either physical/astral space or the duties of being Galactus’ Hearld (really surprised Coy didn’t mention any of this but perhaps he is not familiarized with the silver surfer runs in the comics). To do Shalla Bal without Norin Radd makes no sense to me and could ruin the opportunity to do Norin Radd’s story properly. Why risk the controversies and instead listen to the fans (don’t always do what the fans want but at least listen to the real ones).
Shalla Bal is norin radd’s wife in the main universe. When he became galactus’ herald he was separated from her. Norin made that deal to keep her and his planet safe from being devoured by galactus.

I do wish comic book movies only ended with other characters making general cameos at an after credit scene. You know when Magnito showed he was getting his power back? Leading to curiosity and theory’s, not sequels. I remember A large fraction of the theater let out a gasp after X Men 3. Also, I don’t care how much hate the first two Fantastic Four movies get. I love them :) I love the Blomkamp Blu-ray on the shelf. He’s one of my top directors 👍
Saw the casting, knew this is how people would react. I just wish the people claiming “I’m done with Marvel” would actually stand by what they say instead of commenting on every new story reminding us: “I don’t care about the MCU”. Did you watch the box office in 2023? We are done with the MCU. 95% of Disneys movies last year lost money, and they lost BIG money. I mean, if Disney wants to keep losing money, then this Silver Surfer casting was a good decision.
I will try to comment on the female Silver Surfer issue without sounding like a hater. The Fantastic Four are generally known as Marvel's First Family and many MCU fans have been looking very much forward to this movie. I think we can agree on that. Now if Disney's MCU movies have been making less than they used to, and Disney are now producing one of the two movies that simply cannot be allowed to fail, the other one being X-Men, I simply don't understand why they take chances like this. They must know that casting a female Silver Surfer (and yes she is a canon character that first appeared in 1968) is risky and risks causing the movie to make less money that it otherwise would have. I don't hate it. I just don't understand it.

The issue with this Surfer casting is Marvel's interest in changing characters or emphasizing the wrong ones is hurting the brand. These actions are just not working. The box office just keeps dropping and these stories aren't hitting as hard.
I was about to say that I hadn't seen much negative discourse regarding Julia Garner's casting, outside of the usual channels --- and then I looked at the comments here. lol Bring it on! Julia is a phenomenal actress.... it's the writing that worries me. Hopefully they don't waste her talent.

Selfishly I've always wanted The Silver Surfer to be a Polynesian Actor/Actress. I loved Marvel my whole life, there isn't really a lot of great representation in the comics besides Black Tom Cassidy, Loa, & Mondo. (Not the coolest of names). It maybe a stretch but for me I found representation in Silver Surfer because he surfed - which has Polynesian roots and some might consider the sport of surfing synonymous with Polynesia. Fingers crossed that Norrin Radd can still be portrayed by a performer with Oceanic roots but if not then no worries. Best of luck to the talent involved.
Disney did not buy 20th Century Fox just for the X-Men and Fantastic 4. It would completely irresponsible to spend that much money just for small piece of that whole company. If they were just interested in buying those rights, they would just have made an offer for those specific rights for a much lower price. They bought 20th Century Fox for their entire catalog of movies and TV shows which Disney wanted for Disney+...
I think that I pretty much agree with what the crew has to say here about the Silver Surfer casting. I am a huge fan of the classic Silver Surfer, so my own dislike of this choice is purely in my desire to see the character I loved in the comics brought to life the way I had always imagined him. Despite being a bad movie, the FF sequel got the character design and voice done exactly how it felt to me when reading the comics, so I always hoped they'd go in that direction in an MCU adaptation. HOWEVER, I understand this is a really good actress. While I would be a little bummed if they don't do the version of Silver Surfers that I grew up loving... If the actress and the writing are great, I can't complain. At the end of the day, I do want Marvel Studios to make good movies. So, I'm not gonna be angry about this at all. And if they drop the ball and this is terrible... I'll be a little bummed that a piece of entertainment didn't work for me. Which is not the end of the world. It's all a wait and see thing right now.
I get the point Kristian was making is basically make smarter promotional decisions at this point when the controversy is at an all time high instead of feeding the trolls. I personally think this was [a misguided] attempt at cashing in on the actress's prestige right now; hinting people about Earth X to spark the debate from those in the know about Silver Surfer; and that [per Earth X] there were going to be two characters sporting the galactic glaze. Marvel didn't read the room, sure, but I can easily see a setup like they described. That is, one alternate universe with Shalla is visually distinct from the 616 universe where Norrin is Galactus's herald, and ultimately he's getting his story told. Alternatively, Norrin deserted his station and Shalla convinced Galactus to take her as a replacement so he didn't chomp down on Zenn-La for spite and retribution. Galactus may have charged Shalla with hunting down her once true love, and in doing so now we have relatable, humanizing stakes to a story about the alien, semi-antagonistic side characters in the FF's flick. I truly understand the frustrations and distrust in not getting the Norrin version announced, but if one considers that there may be a plan to the story that makes her involvement relevant. Either way I suspect she was the bigger name more worthy of announcing than the Norrin Radd actor, or that he's an even bigger name they were saving for extra splash later, but that this just backfired because of the climate.
My biggest pushback to "just get the X-Men!!!" is it goes against Kristian's prior stance of "wait until you have a story!" "Stop doing things no one cares about!" No one cared about who the Guardians were (until they put on the mask) but the story and filmmaker were both strong so it excelled accordingly. So then you get to the X-Men, then what, for the next decade +, while you currently have Shang-Chi, Falcon, Ms. Marvel & company sitting in limbo? The X-Men can carry you for nearly 2 decades but still. There's still plenty of time before break glass.

For me as a MCU fan, I just want a well crafted story, I don’t care about known actors….I didn’t like having known actors play well known superhero characters, I would prefer unknown actors and put the money into making an amazing film
I was so pumped to see the news about Gillespie directing Supergirl! I just started to actually read comics and Woman of Tomorrow is what I read first and so far is still my favorite. I’ve loved pretty much all of Gillespie’s work so far and think he’s a great fit for the movie and will get a great performance from Alcock!

Yep, I definitely think down the line, there will be a Marvel DC crossover, and it would be great if they even look at the comics crossover like Batman Spiderman crossover comics ( two of them) one of it was written by JM Dematteis. Also, as long as the casting and genderbending serves narrative purposes, and introduce Rad as the main Silver surfer in MCU, I'm all in for Julia's performance

The female silver surfer is his hearld and with the rumours Javier bardem as galactus who also is Hispanic like Pedro pascal they clearly want to adapt some of earth x. And I believe we will see norra Rand silver surfer in the movie as well and the original galactus due to the rumour of dual timelines
I'm 100% on board with Julia Garner as Silver Surfer. Don't do any nonsense like playing I'm Just Girl when she shows up on screen. Make the character good and not a single person will complain.
End of the day, let's just see how it goes. Whether there's two Silver Surfers or she ends up being the only one, we still gotta see how that story pans out. General audiences aren't even all that 100% familiar with the character, maybe outside the Laurence Fishburne character in "Rise of the Silver Surfer." Honestly, I'm fine with it. She has been a Silver Surfer in another universe in the comics. I just hate the discourse because nuance will be lost. I get the whole thing about "wanting to rebuild" in the face of bad press and poor box office performance. But in that sense, you're once again catering to voices that are honestly just basic and spiteful at the most surface level. And if you don't like the multiverse, well... tough. We're amidst the Multiverse Saga. That's what it's called, and it's honestly how we're getting these new iterations of the X-Men and the F4 without disrupting the established continuity of the sacred timeline. No point in pivoting from that. They just gotta make it work with their current projects like a "Loki", and even "The Marvels" where it's digestable, easy to understand, and hits on both a story and emotional point.
The multiverse thing is kind of an excuse. Mainstream Silver Surfer is Norrin Radd. He is a great character with a very meaningful story. Its not sexist to want the actual Silver Surfer. I don't see this going well. Just my personal opinion.
I really hope that this Fantastic 4 movie is fantastic I really enjoyed the Tim Story movies for what they were, but I really do hope that Marvel Studios delivers on this one because we need a great Fantastic 4 movie it's what we are craving for with that being said I hope that the Silver Surfer has a great story and I wouldn't mind if we get an origin about the Silver Surfer I'm all for a female Silver Surfer and save Norin Radd for later projects I hope we get a fantastic story for this movie. I think F4 will end with them getting into the MCU and they’ll see Norrin Radd Silver Surfer as their “we’re not in Kansas anymore” moment. And it’ll be a chance for Marvel to do what they did in the Eternals with Harry Styles. They’ll cast a big name like Glenn Powell or Efron (idk much about Radd, just throwing out names that would generate a big pop) as the Silver Surfer and hopefully bring him into Secret Wars
let's make some things clear: 1. The general public who make the box office don't care about Silver Surfer 2. Having a male silver surfer didn't help the F4 sequel be good or beloved 3. Harloff be careful not to believe everything Sneider says as true, He also makes mistakes 4. You are right that a better move would be to have the normal silver surfer, but that action would not just be for business, it is also political, because it would be done to avoid bothering a certain group of people, you can't separate both aspects. Now, you could also say that it wouldn't be a problem if they never considered having a female Silver Surfer, but the reality is that Marvel and Disney don't want to do that anymore. So they are forced to write good characters or suffer the consequences.
Respectfully, I don't think the gender of Silver Surfer matters one bit. You're always going to have a vocal minority that are going to hate on shit no matter what. I really don't like the idea of catering to that nonsense. If the movie isn't good, sure, there are going to be people who blame the gender swap as the reason (and probably the ethnicity of Pedro). And if it's great, they're STILL going to shit on the movie because of the gender swap and non-traditional depiction of Reed.
Im fine with a female silver surfer, but you need to get it right because if it looks like another Disney gender swap you run the risk of being labeled another woke production. So hopefully she fits the character and will be seen as great casting.
Anya Taylor-Joy would have been great. Julia Garner though... I don't know. I saw all of Ozarks and even thought she got acclaim, all I remember was fast forwarding through her scenes because she was constantly cussing or yelling or both.

Re:X-Men news. I don't give as much credibility to this "report" beyond it being a pretty safe guess to make. While I'm sure the sheer library of Fox was the bigger decider, I agree the X-Men IP was a big decider for Disney to make the purchase. It's not hard to deduce that it's around now they'd be looking to roll out X-Men films. I think either way they needed succession plans for actors who would be phasing out soon, so planting mutants all across the MCU titles makes sense, not just having a core X-Men flick. This is also a better way to spin a small group off into a Disney+ series in a less expensive corner that doesn't directly influence or depend on what transpires in the movies. *Storm led X-Men Gold Team* - theatrical *Wolverine & X-Force* - mature theatrical corner *Cyke & Jean led X-Men Blue Team* - Disney+ series stranded in a dimensional rift, operating out of another country, or even on another planet (as long as whatever location doesn't demand some massive budget)
I'm very ok with it. She's a great actress, and we're talking about an intergalactic character who I feel is above all our petty issues on Earth. I do hope we Norrin Radd in the MCU at some point, absolutely. I just hope we get a good FF story.

Shall Bal was Norrin Rad's wife, and in 4 issues of an Earth X series, they basically just reversed the story and had Shalla sacrifice herself instead of Norrin (in virtually no detail, though). In every other universe, Norrin Rad IS the Silver Surfer, the surfer is a celestial being who WAS a man. There HAVE been *other* heralds of Galactus, a few of which were women, but NONE of them went by "The Silver Surfer". First other herald that comes to mind is Frankie Ray Nova, and that's what she went by. Why not just use that version? There is literally no reason to come out and say "our new Silver Surfer is a woman", it's strange that they make that announcement within 24hrs of Iger winning the disney board vote, but it's unfortunately not surprising. Seems like a bit of political posturing on Iger's end. Frankie Nova is honestly a much better known herald of Galactus than that one-off Shalla Bal appearance. If they wanted to have two heralds, with one as a female, SIMPLE, just have THE (actual) Surfer and Frankie Ray Nova side by side. Still unnecessary, but it wouldn't be as needlessly controversial as this goofy decision. I also just can't see Julia Garner in this role at all. She simply doesn't have the presence, the voice or the look for it. She's a decent actress, not great imo (then again, I hate Ozark, i think it was massively overblown, everyone saying "it's Breaking Bad, but in the Ozarks"... nah, nope, not at all. Breaking Bad will always be the far superior story, and Julia as Ruth got old really fast. Actually, every character in Ozark was pretty terrible and unlikeable, everything is so dull and self-serious in that show). I have a hard time believing Sarah Finn is behind this casting, she used to get her castings so absolutely RIGHT, but Marvel has been using other casting directors than just Sarah lately and it shows in the decisions. Honestly, the only F4 casting that I think is Sarah Finn-levels of brilliance is Vanessa Kirby as Sue, and *possibly* Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. Ebon as Ben could turn out surprisingly well, but we'll see. I'm not even getting into Pedro and Joseph Quinn, I think they're both the wrong choice for those characters for myriad reasons.
Craig Gillepsie is a great actors director. with a right script he will make a good movie. He has a high floor, which is what DC needs right now. They just need to release good movies. He is going to get great performances from his actors, he is going to make the movie on budget and on time. Its a great pick

Honestly, given the nature of Silver Surfer, Julia could've even still just played Norrin Radd. Just make her skin silver, shave her head and have the character's gender just be ambiguous since the surfer isn't human. I know they aren't doing that, but it would've been a neat route to go down. Tilda Swinton has played male characters before, and I don't see a problem with it. Men played the female roles in theatre for centuries throughout history in all areas of the globe, lol.
P.S. [WHILE WATCHING] It might be a creative way to allow Norrin Radd to lose Shalla Bal. She could be the hero/villain of this '60s film and Norrin would come to the present with the FF.
Watched the new Hulu movie with Jessica Henwick which is why it caught my attention honestly, but I didn't watch Ozark was waiting for the hype to die down, but long story long Julia Garner is in the film and I'd be the first thing I've seen her in can give me a gage if she can act. She can, but that movie is bad, feels like half of it was cut out, hate watching bad films so I'm trying to save people. Ana Taylor Joy has the other worldly look to her where that would have worked hopefully she can do the same always gonna give the benefit of the doubt.

CONSIDERATION: Character Iconography. This aspect seems to be missing from a decent amount of race/gender bending conversations. As a branding professional and storyteller, the way in which a character or IP is introduced to the public creates an ‘Imprint’ that sticks with the public, and the elements that make up the whole become part of the iconography of that character or IP. Example, a super-muscular Professor X, a blonde Little Mermaid, a balding Superman, an all European cast for an Avatar The Last Airbender adaptation, Mario without a mustache, etc. Some variation can be great, too much variation can quickly become off brand.
Professor X is ripped and can walk in the current comics. It's weird.

I agree w/ Winston too if this was Phase 1, 2, 3 you got a lot more leeway with me to trust that you're changing things for the betterment of the story or the movie overall. Things haven't been great lately so the more you veer away from the source materials that I know and am comfortable with the less excited/happy I am about it.
But yeah there's nothing about Surfer's story that dictates he's a dood. If I remember right Norin Radd did it for love of his planet and love of his wife there's no reason to not flip that to husband or wife or whatever. It really just comes down to lack of trust in the brand's decisions lately that makes me wary.

Honestly when I saw she was cast I admittedly sort of whinced but now that I actually think about it and think about how great of an actress she is I'm less worried.
I watched Ozark from day 1 and waited for every single season and her Ruth character is fucking phenomenal. Everything about how she played that character was so perfect. I haven't watched her other series but again I hear she's fantastic in that as well.
So if she brings that level of professionalism and more important believability and commitment to the character then we may very well be in for a hell of a treat.

This trend among modern feminists where they imbue every show or movie with misandry, which has become a problem for fantasy and sci-fi fans like me. What's worse is that if we comment on it, we're often called misogynists. This needs to stop.
It's also extremely hypocritical and devious of them. They've become the very thing they hated in men. Stories used to have great women and men as characters, but now we see an all-woman casting and a repeating theme of demeaning men. True equality would equally represent both males and females, not just one or the other. This is creating more cultural problems than it's solving.
I think Hollywood needs to stop lazily shoving their hypocritical political beliefs into their productions. It breaks the immersion and creates more division and culture wars. Good writers with skill and care can create uplifting stories that have great plots, world-building, and character development. This is just fan fiction with surface-level writing that uses virtue signaling to attack anyone who critiques it.
I will take that challenge so here we go: No problems with her playing Shalla Bal but I completely agree with Kristian that if this is the approach they take then Norin Radd should be introduced along-side her as well. Shalla Bal is Norin Radd’s soul-mate and they belong together despite the comics tragically and consistently splitting them up due to either physical/astral space or the duties of being Galactus’ Hearld (really surprised Coy didn’t mention any of this but perhaps he is not familiarized with the silver surfer runs in the comics). To do Shalla Bal without Norin Radd makes no sense to me and could ruin the opportunity to do Norin Radd’s story properly. Why risk the controversies and instead listen to the fans (don’t always do what the fans want but at least listen to the real ones).

The Fantastic Four are generally known as Marvel's First Family and many MCU fans have been looking very much forward to this movie. I think we can agree on that.
Now if Disney's MCU movies have been making less than they used to, and Disney are now producing one of the two movies that simply cannot be allowed to fail, the other one being X-Men, I simply don't understand why they take chances like this. They must know that casting a female Silver Surfer (and yes she is a canon character that first appeared in 1968) is risky and risks causing the movie to make less money that it otherwise would have.
I don't hate it. I just don't understand it.

The issue with this Surfer casting is Marvel's interest in changing characters or emphasizing the wrong ones is hurting the brand. These actions are just not working. The box office just keeps dropping and these stories aren't hitting as hard.

Selfishly I've always wanted The Silver Surfer to be a Polynesian Actor/Actress. I loved Marvel my whole life, there isn't really a lot of great representation in the comics besides Black Tom Cassidy, Loa, & Mondo. (Not the coolest of names). It maybe a stretch but for me I found representation in Silver Surfer because he surfed - which has Polynesian roots and some might consider the sport of surfing synonymous with Polynesia. Fingers crossed that Norrin Radd can still be portrayed by a performer with Oceanic roots but if not then no worries. Best of luck to the talent involved.
Disney did not buy 20th Century Fox just for the X-Men and Fantastic 4. It would completely irresponsible to spend that much money just for small piece of that whole company. If they were just interested in buying those rights, they would just have made an offer for those specific rights for a much lower price. They bought 20th Century Fox for their entire catalog of movies and TV shows which Disney wanted for Disney+...
I think that I pretty much agree with what the crew has to say here about the Silver Surfer casting. I am a huge fan of the classic Silver Surfer, so my own dislike of this choice is purely in my desire to see the character I loved in the comics brought to life the way I had always imagined him. Despite being a bad movie, the FF sequel got the character design and voice done exactly how it felt to me when reading the comics, so I always hoped they'd go in that direction in an MCU adaptation. HOWEVER, I understand this is a really good actress. While I would be a little bummed if they don't do the version of Silver Surfers that I grew up loving... If the actress and the writing are great, I can't complain. At the end of the day, I do want Marvel Studios to make good movies. So, I'm not gonna be angry about this at all. And if they drop the ball and this is terrible... I'll be a little bummed that a piece of entertainment didn't work for me. Which is not the end of the world. It's all a wait and see thing right now.

I get the point Kristian was making is basically make smarter promotional decisions at this point when the controversy is at an all time high instead of feeding the trolls.
I personally think this was [a misguided] attempt at cashing in on the actress's prestige right now; hinting people about Earth X to spark the debate from those in the know about Silver Surfer; and that [per Earth X] there were going to be two characters sporting the galactic glaze.
Marvel didn't read the room, sure, but I can easily see a setup like they described. That is, one alternate universe with Shalla is visually distinct from the 616 universe where Norrin is Galactus's herald, and ultimately he's getting his story told. Alternatively, Norrin deserted his station and Shalla convinced Galactus to take her as a replacement so he didn't chomp down on Zenn-La for spite and retribution. Galactus may have charged Shalla with hunting down her once true love, and in doing so now we have relatable, humanizing stakes to a story about the alien, semi-antagonistic side characters in the FF's flick.
I truly understand the frustrations and distrust in not getting the Norrin version announced, but if one considers that there may be a plan to the story that makes her involvement relevant.
Either way I suspect she was the bigger name more worthy of announcing than the Norrin Radd actor, or that he's an even bigger name they were saving for extra splash later, but that this just backfired because of the climate.

My biggest pushback to "just get the X-Men!!!" is it goes against Kristian's prior stance of "wait until you have a story!" "Stop doing things no one cares about!" No one cared about who the Guardians were (until they put on the mask) but the story and filmmaker were both strong so it excelled accordingly. So then you get to the X-Men, then what, for the next decade +, while you currently have Shang-Chi, Falcon, Ms. Marvel & company sitting in limbo? The X-Men can carry you for nearly 2 decades but still. There's still plenty of time before break glass.

I was so pumped to see the news about Gillespie directing Supergirl! I just started to actually read comics and Woman of Tomorrow is what I read first and so far is still my favorite. I’ve loved pretty much all of Gillespie’s work so far and think he’s a great fit for the movie and will get a great performance from Alcock!

They’re clearly doing Franklin richards as galactus. The female silver surfer is his hearld and with the rumours Javier bardem as galactus who also is Hispanic like Pedro pascal they clearly want to adapt some of earth x. And I believe we will see norra Rand silver surfer in the movie as well and the original galactus due to the rumour of dual timelines
I'm 100% on board with Julia Garner as Silver Surfer. Don't do any nonsense like playing I'm Just Girl when she shows up on screen. Make the character good and not a single person will complain.
End of the day, let's just see how it goes. Whether there's two Silver Surfers or she ends up being the only one, we still gotta see how that story pans out. General audiences aren't even all that 100% familiar with the character, maybe outside the Laurence Fishburne character in "Rise of the Silver Surfer." Honestly, I'm fine with it. She has been a Silver Surfer in another universe in the comics. I just hate the discourse because nuance will be lost. I get the whole thing about "wanting to rebuild" in the face of bad press and poor box office performance. But in that sense, you're once again catering to voices that are honestly just basic and spiteful at the most surface level. And if you don't like the multiverse, well... tough. We're amidst the Multiverse Saga. That's what it's called, and it's honestly how we're getting these new iterations of the X-Men and the F4 without disrupting the established continuity of the sacred timeline. No point in pivoting from that. They just gotta make it work with their current projects like a "Loki", and even "The Marvels" where it's digestable, easy to understand, and hits on both a story and emotional point.
The multiverse thing is kind of an excuse. Mainstream Silver Surfer is Norrin Radd. He is a great character with a very meaningful story. Its not sexist to want the actual Silver Surfer. I don't see this going well. Just my personal opinion.
I really hope that this Fantastic 4 movie is fantastic I really enjoyed the Tim Story movies for what they were, but I really do hope that Marvel Studios delivers on this one because we need a great Fantastic 4 movie it's what we are craving for with that being said I hope that the Silver Surfer has a great story and I wouldn't mind if we get an origin about the Silver Surfer I'm all for a female Silver Surfer and save Norin Radd for later projects I hope we get a fantastic story for this movie. I really hope that the Punisher is as awesome as he was I'm so happy that Disney is keeping Punishers skull logo that's awesome I really do think that we are going to get Norin Radd the true Silver Surfer maybe as a post credit scene I think that we are going to get an X-men movie I would say probably after Secret Wars.
Disney is high on crack at this point when it comes to their decision making.
I think F4 will end with them getting into the MCU and they’ll see Norrin Radd Silver Surfer as their “we’re not in Kansas anymore” moment. And it’ll be a chance for Marvel to do what they did in the Eternals with Harry Styles. They’ll cast a big name like Glenn Powell or Efron (idk much about Radd, just throwing out names that would generate a big pop) as the Silver Surfer and hopefully bring him into Secret Wars

let's make some things clear:
1. The general public who make the box office don't care about Silver Surfer
2. Having a male silver surfer didn't help the F4 sequel be good or beloved
3. Harloff be careful not to believe everything Sneider says as true, He also makes mistakes

You are right that a better move would be to have the normal silver surfer, but that action would not just be for business, it is also political, because it would be done to avoid bothering a certain group of people, you can't separate both aspects. Now, you could also say that it wouldn't be a problem if they never considered having a female Silver Surfer, but the reality is that Marvel and Disney don't want to do that anymore. So they are forced to write good characters or suffer the consequences.
The Disney box office from 2023 confirms your first two points are wrong. Go woke go broke. Its a proven fact.
Respectfully, I don't think the gender of Silver Surfer matters one bit. You're always going to have a vocal minority that are going to hate on shit no matter what. I really don't like the idea of catering to that nonsense. If the movie isn't good, sure, there are going to be people who blame the gender swap as the reason (and probably the ethnicity of Pedro). And if it's great, they're STILL going to shit on the movie because of the gender swap and non-traditional depiction of Reed.

Im fine with a female silver surfer, but you need to get it right because if it looks like another Disney gender swap you run the risk of being labeled another woke production. So hopefully she fits the character and will be seen as great casting.
Anya Taylor-Joy would have been great. Julia Garner though... I don't know. I saw all of Ozarks and even thought she got acclaim, all I remember was fast forwarding through her scenes because she was constantly cussing or yelling or both.
I think it all depends on if the character is written well…and the performance. She’s a great actress, but do you guys have hope for the writing? (Not sure who’s writing script)
Re:X-Men news. I don't give as much credibility to this "report" beyond it being a pretty safe guess to make. While I'm sure the sheer library of Fox was the bigger decider, I agree the X-Men IP was a big decider for Disney to make the purchase. It's not hard to deduce that it's around now they'd be looking to roll out X-Men films.
I think either way they needed succession plans for actors who would be phasing out soon, so planting mutants all across the MCU titles makes sense, not just having a core X-Men flick. This is also a better way to spin a small group off into a Disney+ series in a less expensive corner that doesn't directly influence or depend on what transpires in the movies.
*Storm led X-Men Gold Team* - theatrical
*Wolverine & X-Force* - mature theatrical corner
*Cyke & Jean led X-Men Blue Team* - Disney+ series stranded in a dimensional rift, operating out of another country, or even on another planet (as long as whatever location doesn't demand some massive budget)
I'm very ok with it. She's a great actress, and we're talking about an intergalactic character who I feel is above all our petty issues on Earth. I do hope we Norrin Radd in the MCU at some point, absolutely. I just hope we get a good FF story.

I'm not surprised they gender swaped Silver Surfer. It's a tradition at this point with both MCU and Disney. Fantastic 4 2005 is a good movie and I'm seeing many people will go back to revisit it when new F4 movie comes out.

Now if Disney is fine with all their movies in 2024 losing money, like they did in 2023, thats their call.

Shall Bal was Norrin Rad's wife, and in 4 issues of an Earth X series, they basically just reversed the story and had Shalla sacrifice herself instead of Norrin (in virtually no detail, though).
In every other universe, Norrin Rad IS the Silver Surfer, the surfer is a celestial being who WAS a man.
There HAVE been *other* heralds of Galactus, a few of which were women, but NONE of them went by "The Silver Surfer". First other herald that comes to mind is Frankie Ray Nova, and that's what she went by. Why not just use that version?
There is literally no reason to come out and say "our new Silver Surfer is a woman", it's strange that they make that announcement within 24hrs of Iger winning the disney board vote, but it's unfortunately not surprising. Seems like a bit of political posturing on Iger's end.
Frankie Nova is honestly a much better known herald of Galactus than that one-off Shalla Bal appearance.
If they wanted to have two heralds, with one as a female, SIMPLE, just have THE (actual) Surfer and Frankie Ray Nova side by side. Still unnecessary, but it wouldn't be as needlessly controversial as this goofy decision.
I also just can't see Julia Garner in this role at all. She simply doesn't have the presence, the voice or the look for it. She's a decent actress, not great imo (then again, I hate Ozark, i think it was massively overblown, everyone saying "it's Breaking Bad, but in the Ozarks"... nah, nope, not at all. Breaking Bad will always be the far superior story, and Julia as Ruth got old really fast. Actually, every character in Ozark was pretty terrible and unlikeable, everything is so dull and self-serious in that show).
I have a hard time believing Sarah Finn is behind this casting, she used to get her castings so absolutely RIGHT, but Marvel has been using other casting directors than just Sarah lately and it shows in the decisions.
Honestly, the only F4 casting that I think is Sarah Finn-levels of brilliance is Vanessa Kirby as Sue, and *possibly* Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. Ebon as Ben could turn out surprisingly well, but we'll see.
I'm not even getting into Pedro and Joseph Quinn, I think they're both the wrong choice for those characters for myriad reasons.

Craig Gillepsie is a great actors director. with a right script he will make a good movie. He has a high floor, which is what DC needs right now. They just need to release good movies. He is going to get great performances from his actors, he is going to make the movie on budget and on time. Its a great pick
I find people getting angry that a man might be directing Supergirl so stupid… WHOEVER IS BEST FOR THE JOH SHOULD GET THE JOB PERIOD. Any way someone tries to argue against that can be immediately struck down by the fact that… Tom King (literally a man) wrote the story they’re adapting.
Honestly, given the nature of Silver Surfer, Julia could've even still just played Norrin Radd. Just make her skin silver, shave her head and have the character's gender just be ambiguous since the surfer isn't human. I know they aren't doing that, but it would've been a neat route to go down. Tilda Swinton has played male characters before, and I don't see a problem with it. Men played the female roles in theatre for centuries throughout history in all areas of the globe, lol.
P.S. [WHILE WATCHING] It might be a creative way to allow Norrin Radd to lose Shalla Bal. She could be the hero/villain of this '60s film and Norrin would come to the present with the FF.
Watched the new Hulu movie with Jessica Henwick which is why it caught my attention honestly, but I didn't watch Ozark was waiting for the hype to die down, but long story long Julia Garner is in the film and I'd be the first thing I've seen her in can give me a gage if she can act. She can, but that movie is bad, feels like half of it was cut out, hate watching bad films so I'm trying to save people. Ana Taylor Joy has the other worldly look to her where that would have worked hopefully she can do the same always gonna give the benefit of the doubt.
