As someone from the UK watching this I can’t fail to be impressed by a US road trip. In the UK it’ll be “ok, I’ll stop for 15 minutes at this supercharger, and then, oh, I can make my destination.” Video ends...
Man I drove from Toronto to Edmonton and I swore it was witch craft that I was driving for 12 hours and hadn't left Ontario. But I would love to make that drive again in a EV.

Absolutely! I’m a big EV fan and thanks to you and some others my hope is to one day own a Tesla. Do you have a recommendation for someone with a 50 mile per day round trip commute for a used EV? It would be in the next couple of years I would be replacing my ICE car with it.

Interesting video. Your trip with stopping at superchargers spaced about 100 miles apart on an interstate reminds me of cross country railroad trips in the age steam powered locomotives where the trains had to stop and fill their tenders with water approximately every 50 miles.

Thanks for the video. My long trip in my S was FL to CT and back. I think you make planning the charging stops more complicated than it is. The car really does it quite well, but only if you let it. I did waste 1 1/2 hours having to go out of the way with my brother seeing the car for the first time. He said he will never own an electric car. The problem is if you have to pick up someone and go further to your final destination there is waypoints are not possible. I got to his house but if the car could have told me to charge longer at the last stop, knowing the final destination, we would have made it to pick up his son and to the next charger. It does not determine if once you make it to your destination if you will ever make it to another charging station. We ended having to travel East in NJ rush hour traffic to a service center to charge instead of NW to his son's; making 1 hr trip 2 1/2 hrs. The cost of my last service visit would have probably paid the programmers time to add waypoints to the navigation for the entire fleet. Otherwise, I like the car and I find it more convenient charging my car at home than having to make special trips to gas stations; more of a hassle to my phone. A road trip it takes a bit longer if your a marathon get there driver but at my age the biggest problem is the charging is too fast to eat and stretch. I end up moving and unplugging it to avoid Supercharger overtime fees before I can finish my meal.
Great trip! This is exactly how I travel in our dual motor non-p. I’m heading to Austin in next week for Fully Charged live, which will be a good three days each way from DC... I plan to hit every Supercharger. Cheers!

I've just discovered your videos but I'm really enjoying them. I'm not 100% sold on the idea of EVs as the future of automobiles but I'm definitely intrigued by the Teslas and am willing to learn more about other people's experiences with them. On another note, while I know that nobody can know the names of all the towns (I definitely sympathize, being from Oklahoma, which is a state with a lot of oddly-named towns) but I thought everyone knew Shreveport!
There is a Super Charger in Greenville SC right off I-85 and Woodruff Rd next to a hotel, how come you didn’t go to that? It was probably very close to where you ended up staying. Great video.
I'm addicted to and love your road trip videos. I never comment, but for the love of God man, clean the circle off your windshield where some suction cup went.
5:00 rain does suddenly make AP less reliable. We plan our stops based on the breaks we need. Our bladders are much smaller than our battery. Never waited for a charge on 2300 mile trip.
Oh man was i shocked at 27:04 when the car was massively tailgating on the RV. Took me a few seconds to realize that RV was pulling the car. Not a common sight here in Europe, where such things would be highly illegal :D
Why is that illegal? It’s really common here. In Idaho people will have a camp trailer behind a truck and a boat trailer behind that. (Now THAT is not legal in most states, but it is here)
Thanks for posting the charging times / distances / consumption figures - really improves the overall understanding of the trip. But 195 mi in 1:27 (Monroe to Shreveport)? OMG :-)
I really appreciate your videos. I am waiting for my Y. As someone who has yet to receive their car, I had ideas of how travel would be. But seeing how you plan your trips, and the frequency of your stops, I know how to travel most efficiently with my future car. And since I trip everywhere with 3 bulldogs, they will appreciate the frequent stops too!
even with gas stations across the vast open road... you'll have some that area spectacular with 5 star toliets... but there are those sketchy one's with those very sketchy pumps...that pump gas out so slow and irradically... slow chargers are a small inconvenience... good thing they are less frequent now
Hey Kyle, it's interesting to hear you love road trips. I would hope so! What helps with the enjoyment for you? Is it the frequent stops and the auto pilot? Or do you love an ICE road trip just as much? Does the number of passengers matter? The destination? As someone who doesn't really enjoy a long slog of a drive, I'd love to hear what gets you excited about them.
Love your videos I'm from Arkansas and the only super charger is in little rock there is a few others planned but hopefully when I get a tesla there will be a few more. Great video as always
I enjoyed this video. It's unlikely that I will even smell a Tesla car in the next 10 years (I'm quite far from USA), so I live vicariously through videos like these.
Great fun video. My husband is trying to talk me into a model 3 so I’m doing my research. We are backroad and easy off-road drivers through California, nevada, Colorado, Utah, new mexico, arizona, and Wyoming. I’m noticing most super chargers are on the E W interstates. Any backroad trips in your future? It’s fun to watch you drive, charge, map, and drive....
Even as an American I sometimes forget just how huge Texas is since I've never been through it by car. I figure on doing roughly 750-800 miles (1200-1300km) a day on a long road trip. Texas is just a little big bigger than that from E-W on the highway.
It always rains when you drive long range. I recommend you start using Rain-X add on to your windshield washer fluid or just buy the already mixed one at walmart. It's super cheap and it works like a champ to keep you view clear when you drive in the rain. Just a litte safety tip for you. BTW, I'm watching your videos from Dubai, UAE.
This is the exact model I ordered - same colors inside & out. Nice choice!! I’ll tell you what I’d love to see included in these videos are teaching items like tips & tricks or ‘how to’ information associated with the content. In this case you’re on a road trip. There’s a lot of driving, charging & route planning. If you added some information on how to grab the best charge and perhaps even visit a non-Tesla rapid charging station and show us the experience of using that adapter, it would take it to the next level. I’d love to see more experiences included like leaving Sentry Mode on overnight with the car not on a charger and sharing real-world experiences of how much battery does it actually consume (whether on a road trip or leaving the car, for example, at an airport for an overnight trip). These are just examples. Any additional teaching tips and informational content would make your already great videos even better in my 2 cents worth of opinion. Thank you for sharing your experiences with the Tesla community btw!!
It would be great for Tesla owners but most people wouldn’t be interested in that content. I try and include a lot of tips and tricks for owners but also keeping it moving for people who just want a broader general video. It’s a balance. If you go back through our videos I usually talk about most tips and tricks throughout the series
what are the freaking odds ! first video i watch of yours and you say you are going to EL PASO. Where i currently reside, my hometown! Now to finish the video haha
Out of Spec Motoring hey man I’m curious to buy a Tesla so I checked out your video. And come on, at the end you didn’t tally up the number of stops/average charge time/average miles per kilowatt. This is the info I need while thinking of buying a Tesla. You mention you are doing videos like these partly to help make electric vehicles aware to people yet you refrain from putting out the hard data at the end like any normal person wold expect. You lost each stop info but not at the end? Come on dude
I thank you for being the only RUclipsr to use logic and real world results to say long trips are better in an ice. Stopping every hour is really inconvenient. I have a LR DM and in the winter couldn't even get 150 miles round trip from Toronto to Buffalo. While AP made it enjoyable, and it was cheaper, I really disliked having to make a pit stop for relatively minimal distance. Also cooking along at 80-85mph on open roads takes a huge hit on range over the 55-60 sweet spot Also noticed you were charging with the HVAC on. Tesla now charges for the shore consumption as well as the consumption to the pack. Perhaps heat off will get your that extra 8kw taken by the heater
I love when you are at 76% SOC and say that charging has ramped down to pretty slow... 54KW... That's the max peak charging rate for my Chevy Bolt EV! I have done a similar trip from North East Arkansas, down through Texas and up to Phoenix... Same route through Texas, New Mexico and Arizona... Just takes me longer due to the slower charging.
@@OutofSpecMotoring The next EV I purchase will have minimum of 150KW charging. If traditional manufacturers don't step up I will get a used Model 3 when everyone gets ride of them in favor of the model Y and Cybertruck.
99% but keep in mind AP is just driver assistance not replacement. So it keeps the strain off of keeping the car in the lane but still need to pay attention
I hope to get a Tesla EV some day and do a long roadtrip. Currently driving a Chevy Volt Gen. 1. Absolutely, fascinating video. Thank you very much. Aloha.
Strange, although I do a lot of Tesla road tripping myself (mostly business), I still enjoy watching videos such as this. Next month I will be doing mammoth trip myself in my model X Chicago to Washington DC, then to St. Antonio Texas and back to Chicago
This is pretty cool. This shows what the chargers look like at each stop on a trip half way across the United States while driving the Model 3 Performance. Texas has a massive number of chargers as you showed us on the map in the car. The Bakery that gives you free coffee when one shows the Tesla key is another very cool thing and something I had not heard about. It was great to see that hyou manged to pull in with an average of 4 to 6 percent remaining on the battery. The mention that the motels did not have chargers. Also the lack of food at the available chargers (not to mentioned bathroom facilities); I didn't know that Tesla people were allowed to purchase junk foof to get through their trip, but there you go! Quite the thing. Interesting that an e;mployee at a store near the superchargers did not know what the chargers were and you had to explain it to her. Napping while charging makes a lot of sense as one can kill two birds with one stone. Having arrived at Midland at 6%. 112 miles to the next stop. This certainly is much different than 350 miles which many ice cars can do. That there were sufficient chargers to easily go across the country with chargers available every hundred miles or so. You were connecting the dots on the map with the Superchargers, going half way across the country. You made it to aq place that had multiple inactive plugs. New battery technology will be especially welcome in the new electric cars including Tesla. Next stop is near Pheonix, a location where there are lots of people at the chargers, all the time, apparently. When the new auto technology comes in, I'd like that for my computer and for my telephone. My computer is pretty old. Who knows if that will ever be on the menu. The question is, what is the BMS? Presumably it monitors the fill of the battery to the highest efficiency at the lowest amount of time spent? AF
Had no idea you were so close to Virginia! Maybe there will be a reason for a road trip sometime. Have you discovered the peanuts just up the road at The Good Earth? They are my vice - I stop in each trip that takes me through there.
Nice trip. I travel between Atlanta and Charlotte a couple times /yr so very familiar with the Atlantic Station, GA SC, Greenvill, SC SC and the Mallard Creek, NC SC. I can see how the Atlantic Station SC would be hard to find. Once you get there who would know you have to go to the bottom of the parking deck to find them. They're usually pretty busy there too.
what would the trip look like if you charged to like 85 to 90% and drained all the way down to 5% each time before charging? i dont really like stopping that often
Probably would have skipped a couple chargers here or there. But would have taken longer - I agree though, I used to hate stopping on trips. Now it’s what I look forward to
Lots of great charging ideas. I’m a sucker for charging to at least 90% cause these cars hate speed. I always use a calculated “wing it” nav same as you Kyle. Hope to one day make it out to the Out of Spec HQ one day! Great video, thanks! Will share with my buddies.
Great Video!! Thanks for showing the stats at each stop along the way. Your average cruising speed is up there. Seeing the scenery along the way reminded me of my cross country trips, they were a lot of fun and amazing vistas. We live in an amazing country!!
sir, i came here from your porsche video. Nice thing about this video is the cards you put with information after charging. Hope you could do that with porsche video too. And since i am putting this comment before watching complete video and entire information clubbed together would be great.
It would be an interesting test to run a car in parallel with you, same route, same car but slower speed, like 73mph, but still do the same charging scenarios and see how much time or range you would gain by slowing down or not.

What was in the bag in the trunk that said "juice" on it
I'm addicted to and love your road trip videos. I never comment, but for the love of God man, clean the circle off your windshield where some suction cup went.
Haha! Thanks for watching. It’s going in for a big wash this week
5:00 rain does suddenly make AP less reliable.
We plan our stops based on the breaks we need. Our bladders are much smaller than our battery. Never waited for a charge on 2300 mile trip.
When you trip alone looks cool like this part. i enjoyed this part.
You should film when you get food and such, would be soooo cozy being on the entire trip with you :)
Oh man was i shocked at 27:04 when the car was massively tailgating on the RV. Took me a few seconds to realize that RV was pulling the car. Not a common sight here in Europe, where such things would be highly illegal :D
I try and film some of the wild things that happen in the land of the free!
@@OutofSpecMotoring And that's so nice of you, thanks!
OMG :-)
Oh - checked google - a typo I guess. I was enjoying the fantasy of late night speed. :-)
Definitely a typo it’s only about 100 miles - whoops!
Awesome video, thanks for the work you do! Please keep it up.
They will be very happy bulldogs!
even with gas stations across the vast open road... you'll have some that area spectacular with 5 star toliets... but there are those sketchy one's with those very sketchy pumps...that pump gas out so slow and irradically... slow chargers are a small inconvenience... good thing they are less frequent now
Yes agree more frequent quick stops charging 20%-80% ish is the way to go!
You stopped in my backyard........Meridian, MS. Yes the mall is dying like many in the USA. Enjoy your videos.
It’s fun to watch you drive, charge, map, and drive....
very nice loved till the end of it and next time take me with you as your cameraman so better to shoot nice time lap and much more
loved the video, very calming to watch. got a sub👍
40:48 wow.. 314km in 1 hour and 27 min? it's like 200+ km/h of average speed
ok
Monroe to Shreveport is about 95-99 miles, not 195 as posted. 95mph=152kph
Even as an American I sometimes forget just how huge Texas is since I've never been through it by car.
I figure on doing roughly 750-800 miles (1200-1300km) a day on a long road trip. Texas is just a little big bigger than that from E-W on the highway.
Goes on forever!
I spent a year crossing Texas one day. (El Paso to Shreveport)
It always rains when you drive long range. I recommend you start using Rain-X add on to your windshield washer fluid or just buy the already mixed one at walmart. It's super cheap and it works like a champ to keep you view clear when you drive in the rain. Just a litte safety tip for you. BTW, I'm watching your videos from Dubai, UAE.
thank you for a full video, not just short clips

Allegedly!
@@OutofSpecMotoring Ever regret that you didn't keep the longe range instead of buying the performance? Cause you are making a lot of road trips
@@DeepSnowRider you can use A Better Route Planner to find all of that info for any road trip you can imagine.

Have fun

I thank you for being the only RUclipsr to use logic and real world results to say long trips are better in an ice. Stopping every hour is really inconvenient.
I have a LR DM and in the winter couldn't even get 150 miles round trip from Toronto to Buffalo. While AP made it enjoyable, and it was cheaper, I really disliked having to make a pit stop for relatively minimal distance.
Also cooking along at 80-85mph on open roads takes a huge hit on range over the 55-60 sweet spot
Also noticed you were charging with the HVAC on. Tesla now charges for the shore consumption as well as the consumption to the pack. Perhaps heat off will get your that extra 8kw taken by the heater
Oh wow. Yall are located in the same general area I grew up.That's so cool, I never see people from my area on YT lol
Bolt and i3 have way too slow charging - 100kW absolute minimum 200kW+ is much better
@@OutofSpecMotoring The next EV I purchase will have minimum of 150KW charging. If traditional manufacturers don't step up I will get a used Model 3 when everyone gets ride of them in favor of the model Y and Cybertruck.
Great road trip video. Nice to see all the places on route. How much auto pilot did you use on the trip?
99% but keep in mind AP is just driver assistance not replacement. So it keeps the strain off of keeping the car in the lane but still need to pay attention
I hope to get a Tesla EV some day and do a long roadtrip. Currently driving a Chevy Volt Gen. 1. Absolutely, fascinating video. Thank you very much. Aloha.
Where's the Kona these days?
Great video, thanks for sharing
Great video! Very informative. You seem like a very likable guy.
Great video, Kyle. Enjoyed it a lot. Say, why no ABRP this time`?
I did in the first part but I don’t really need a trip planner for Teslas anymore
AF
Your video just finalized my choice to get the long range model
Gotta have the big battery for trips - if anything being able to charge at high speeds deeper into the pack makes all the difference
The trip videos are so dope
More coming soon!
Awesome video, thank you so much for brining us all along the ride. Kinda off-topic: what frames do you have for your glasses, they look great.
Thanks for watching! They’re Warby Parker can’t remember which ones
Love watching you're videos 😃
What was the cost of super charging? How many charges over night at hotels?
Now it’s what I look forward to
There is a Superchrager at the Bass Pro Shop in Independence, MO (Kansas City) :)
Yes! Love that one
Come by the studio anytime
Out of Spec Motoring will do! Just sent Ben an email with some video ideas.
Firehouse subs is SO underrated 26:42
Great video. I noticed in one shot you had a Tesla app on your iWatch. What’s the name of the app?
@50:54 did you say the Smart Water is anti-accident?
Nice road trip video! Have fun on your trip!
Why is no one mentioning the sleep deprivation? I don’t know how you do it. lol great content.
It would be an interesting test to run a car in parallel with you, same route, same car but slower speed, like 73mph, but still do the same charging scenarios and see how much time or range you would gain by slowing down or not.
You lose time
