On the evening of April 5th, 2023, 26-year-old Andrea Papi was preparing to go out for one of his regular trail runs. Jogging along the mountain trails, surrounded by beautiful forests and fresh air was invigorating and peaceful. I could find no source affirming he had brought along bear spray, or a firearm and he was alone, with no companion or dog with him. After a few hours, Andrea had not returned and his family began to grow concerned as to his whereabouts.
Andrea’s family had a brief discussion and decided they needed to contact authorities to assist in the search for him. An extensive canvassing of his favorite trails was conducted in the dark of night. In the early morning hours of the next day, they discovered a terrifying and sad sight.
By 3 AM, Andrea’s body was found, mauled, and mutilated in an apparent bear attack. Investigators immediately cordoned off the attack site to preserve evidence and learn about the circumstances leading to his death.
Upon examining Andrea’s corpse, they observed severe wounds to his neck, head, and chest that each could have been fatal. The collection of DNA evidence in the form of bear saliva, hair, and other bodily fluids was pulled from his corpse and sent to a lab for analysis. His body was turned over to a coroner for further examination before being released to his family for burial.
In the weeks following the discovery of Andrea’s remains, a search was launched to locate the bear that had attacked him, a bear known as JJ4. Now, this bear was well known to local researchers, as she had been previously involved in another incident in 2020. She had attacked two hunters and had subsequently been targeted for culling due to her intolerant reaction to humans in her territory. Researchers had fit her with a tracking collar, but by August of 2019 the battery had died, rendering her whereabouts a mystery. The directives to kill her were blocked by a judge at the request of wildlife advocates. She was left alone for the time being, until this fateful meeting with Andrea Papi.
For the following two weeks, authorities searched for bear JJ4. They knew she had three cubs and would have to cover a broad range and territory to find food for them, so they used as many resources as needed. In her 17 years of life, she had learned how to avoid people and was putting that knowledge to good use, staying away from many of the places she had previously been seen and secreting herself and her cubs in the most remote stretches of forest.
As the search for Bear JJ4 continued, the human turmoil around what to do with her and her cubs continued to grow. Andrea’s family had publicly announced that they did not support the culling of the bear, even though she was identified as the bear that had taken his life. Eventually they went as far as filing a lawsuit against the government, claiming that it had failed to notify residents of the location of problem bears.
Wildlife advocates chimed in, contributing that the DNA evidence present at the attack scene did not prove bear JJ4 had killed Andrea, but merely that she had been in the area. They also claimed that forensic bite evidence showed that a male bear had killed the young man, given the distance between the wounds inflicted by the canines were larger and farther apart than a female bear's canines.
On April 17th, 2023, Bear JJ4 was caught in a culvert trap baited with fruit in Brenta National Park. Her cubs were deemed capable of surviving on their own, given they were two years old, and released unharmed.
Although local officials ordered her extermination, an appeal through the courts by wildlife advocates put it on hold. Their plea cited a 1979 treaty that prohibits the unnecessary killing of wildlife, calling into question what is a necessary killing. The government hadn’t worked out these details prior to introducing the brown bears. They had no idea what to do after the bears reached their goal population of 40 to 60 bears, how to track them, or how to alert the public of the bear’s whereabouts. They relied on the ideal of restoring brown bear populations without a proper structure of management and the protection of bear and human populations.

There is a reason the European brown bear was more or less gone from Europe. It was hunted out. They raided honey operations, flocks and herds, they did what bears do. Now the numbers of the re-introduced bears have climbed, and there will be no room for the bear.

@@johnkeith6375 I'm a German natives. This is Northern Italy, Alpine region, so not too densely settled, but still way more than much of the US. Vast empty plains are more a feature of Eastern Europe. And maybe it was wrong to introduce bears there, or maybe the mistake just was not to have a plan what to do once the number they had aimed at was reached. Wolves are coming back on their own over the Polish border and via the Northeast of Germany now - that's also causing an uproar.

And being parents of two small child. When tracks were for about a mile away it changed everything after that the kids weren’t to go out at all after dark. And we tried to pay close attention during the day. It upset me very much I sometimes wish we’d just stay out of it.

That is ridiculous. There is no reason to truck cougars into your area. There is no cougar reintroduction plan in Iowa. However it has been well documented for 20 yrs that cougars are migrating west to east to repopulate their former habitats. Most are young males and most keep moving as they avoid people and there is little game around towns. The cougar that was in your area is probably long gone already

Reintroducing bears anywhere in the alps is ridiculous, there are far too many tourist areas and bears will roam, funnily enough. I would also venture to suggest that has been no information imperative about how to coexist with bears or what defensive measures you can take. I know this to be true because I live in Europe, am interested in bears and have heard nothing. Ill-conceived and not thought out. The only ones to suffer will be victims and bears, that's about as crazy as it gets.

And totally freaks out until it smashes the mirror on the ground and the bear vanishes for all it knows. Recently i was sleeping on couch with a dim light on and suddenly my cat wakes me up scratching and hissing at the window. I got up and looked out and saw nothing but his own reflection in the window so I made sure he could see my face and arms and hands and said “Tom, it’s you! That’s you!” and at first he was like saying “no there is a terrifying cat out there!” but then he calmed down and looked at my reflection then at me and then at my hands reflection and then pt his paw on my hands and looked back and forth a few times and then looked straight at his own reflection like hm, I look cool! 🤣

should introduce grizzly bears to many cities in the USA

  • @jaylupin8680
    @jaylupin8680 22 дня назад +2

This is an interesting, if not horrible scenario. It is, unfortunately the epitome of the EU though. They come up with many (on paper) brilliant and worthwhile causes, but lack the finesse to see it through to a satisfactory finale. A planned re-introduction programme of 60 bears, culminates in 100 bears, is deemed as a success, but in actuality, it is nearly double the projected outcome expected and forecast. Instead of taking relevant action, they celebrate. The issue here, is us Europeans (generally, but maybe not Scandinavians nor Romanians) are conditioned to believe all is safe when we go out and about. Excluding Russia, Europe has a population of around 600 million, almost twice that of the US (the reason Russia is excluded is due to the majority of their country being in Asia). The lower 48 of the US is approximately the same size as Europe, but when Alaska is added, it is a third larger (9 million sq km, to Europes 6 million). The population of Brown bears in the US is around 32500, whereas Europe (again, excluding Russias estimated 100,000), is 17500, almost half. So, nearly twice the human population on a land mass a third smaller, will, inevitably invite encroachment on wildlife. Add political incompetence, lack of knowledge from the general population, and an out of control re-introduction programme of an apex predator within walking distance from population centres and you have a recipe for disaster. I’m afraid that if this continues, then we will hear of more bear attacks in Europe which, knowing the EU, will kick start a “culling” programme to remedy the issue they created. Meanwhile, a family in Italy are mourning the loss of a young man.

Speaking from the tongue of an experienced resident alien in the United States of Grizzlybearica I can tell you we all leave the house fully expecting to be robbed and probably shot intentionally or by stray bullets in gang warfare or at the very least get begged for “a dollah” from young men with expensive sneakers and soft clean hands and designer hairdos and wild animals are the least of anybody’s concerns in any major city especially because we are so on edge that we know any wild animal with a brain will not dare mess with us. It’s not that everybody is armed, that’s mostly a myth, only gangstas and wannabe cop republicans carry guns in day to day life out and about and the rest of us rely purely on the knowledge that in any dangerous situation we will summon the power of the gods to defeat any crack or meth head with politeness and by looking poorer than them. Personally I ride my bicycle through many a rough hood on a daily basis in the south and get along with everybody but only because I myself look crazier than them since I also partake in the drugs and eat nothing but the bare minimum ti survive in protein shakes and peanut butter so my body is efficient and wiry strong and fit and I have superhuman endurance in the overbearing sweltering humidity and heat and feel no cold in winter as I have learnt the method of turning off my thoughts while cycling and merely maintaining situational awareness ready for any trouble that tries to come my way. A bear would most likely run from me as I am a natural born psychopath and feel no fear at all around other living beings due to the certain knowledge that I am crazier still and anything done to me I will repay in revenge a thousand times worse such that all who encounter me must know this on some level hence never mess with me. I reckon I could locate and stalk a grizzly bear momma with her cubs and pick them up and tickle them and the momma would be afraid to even chuff at me. But by the end of the day I would befriend her too and likely be picking ticks off her as she dines on some other human she kills after I have lured them to her mwahahahaha.

I'm very confused, JJ4 was in the area but not the killer of this man (determined by bite-size) correct? She shouldn't have been pursued, then. Sows defending their cubs are usually given a pass (if non predatory.) Boars should've been caught & the correct 1 euthanized. The answer to this is very simple, hunting needs to begin & continue until the population is under control. Allowing an area to double it's capacity of predators is disaster waiting to happen! Bears have no reason to fear us & are seeing people more often as natural resources become strained. Sadly it's the natural order of how things are going.
