As the sow rapidly approached him, she latched her powerful jaws onto his leg and lifted him up a few inches. This caused him to fall straight to his back. She wasted no time in releasing her grip on his leg and moved her saliva covered yellow teeth straight toward his face.
Now plumbers aren’t exactly known for their reaction time, as it isn’t important in their profession, but Angelo must have had quick reflexes. He crossed his arm over his face just before the bear could clamp her jaws on his head. Her canines tore through his elbow like a knife through butter and she ripped chunks of his arm away as she tossed her head.
Now fully aware that this bear was intent on killing him, Angelo knew the action he took next might be his saving grace or his final grace. As the sow pulled his elbow away from his face, she immediately directed her jaws to his throat. But, Angelo somehow beat her to the point of attack once again. He moved his arm across his throat, blocking her from tearing at the vital blood vessels and bones there.
That is when Kira decided to intervene, in her canine way. Call it instinct or perhaps it was her love for her owner, Kira began darting and dancing in and out, barking at the bear, in a clear attempt to distract it. According to AKC guidelines Bernese Mountain dogs can stand 27 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh in around 100 pounds which can make them a physically imposing canine.
As Kira barked, growled and harassed the brown bear, the sow bit and tore at Angelo’s arms and legs. Once the bear got her fill of Kira, she decided she would handle the nuisance Kira presented before the one Angelo presented. She chased toward the dog, giving Angelo just enough time to roll over a small cliff adjacent to the trail.
During the confusion that Kira presented to the sow, she lost track of just where Angelo had gone to. She wandered off in search of her cubs leaving the man bitten, gashed and bleeding in the bushes.
After being certain the sow had left him, Angelo made his way back down the steep hillside. He was treated at a nearby hospital for the severe bites to his arms and legs. With chunks of flesh torn from his arms during the attack, some nerve damage had occurred. Surgeons completed operations to help retain or regain use of his fingers. Angelo tried to get some rest following the attack but would wake up with terrors, claiming the bear was in front of him.
As is most often the case following a bear attack, an investigation into the incident was initiated. Familiarity with the bears in the area led wildlife officers to believe it was a mean old sow known as Bear KJ2. She was suspected in an attack on a man in 2015, which will be featured on a future episode, so she was assembling a bit of a rap sheet with authorities.
Investigators pulled hair and DNA evidence from Angelo’s jacket for comparison to evidence gathered from bears caught in culvert traps deployed around the attack site. They stated that they would put tracking collars on all bears they managed to trap until the analysis of the DNA evidence was completed, then they would track down the responsible bear and place it in a sanctuary or put it down.
But, they had tried this ploy on Bear KJ2 before. In 2015 she was trapped and a radio collar affixed to her neck after her attack on the jogger. She didn’t take too kindly to the high tech jewelry and somehow managed to pull it off from her neck. She had been on the lamb, so to speak ever since.
The provincial President, Ugo Rossi, issued a public statement regarding the spate of attacks in Trento. He stated that there were too many bears in the province and quickly signed orders to have KJ2 killed before she could injure or kill anyone else. And government trackers had completed their orders by Sunday, July 23rd, having tracked and killed Bear KJ2.
Italian Animal Rights group La Lav decried the killing of the bear on the altar of politics. Wildlife advocate groups organized a boycott of the resorts and products from Trento in an attempt to change how the province handled problem brown bears.
Tourists from Great Britain, France and Russia canceled their resort reservations as a gesture of support to the wildlife advocate groups.

Bears do not need to be reintroduced into areas with high human populations whether they were previously native there or not. That's just asking for a lot of future problems. The Italians obviously didn't think it through.

It’s gut wrenching when you hear of a bear mauling or killing a innocent person, but you never hear about people up in arms or protesting about it . This not the case when a bear is killed because they are a danger to communities. Human beings should come first before any animal. No, to relocating these brown bears back into regions they used to roam freely. Just like anything else areas have changed, and those changes mean people have moved in.

One has to question the wisdom of inserting dangerous wild animals into populated areas. It's easy for outside advocates to dictate how local people will live their lives and what dangers they must face, and then go happily on their way when the deed is completed. Those who live and work in the area have to deal with the consequences.

That bear knew exactly where he was because her sense of smell is off the charts. She left because she no longer saw him as a threat to her cub/s. It's likely that she realized that the dog was a bigger threat to her cub and that's why she left him and went after it. Unless you're in high winds where you should definitely carry a gun or know you're going to be hitting that bear in the face with the spray as it attacks you. Bears are almost impossible to kill straight on with a bullet anyway, unless you're lucky enough to hit it in the eye at just the right angle. A shot to the heart could allow that bear 6 seconds to maul you before it drops and that has happened. But again, I encourage you to research it because it's pretty cool. There's some good info on it here on youtube. Some are similar to mythbusters with models of bear skulls, precision shooting and what not. Some are study based relying on studies by the NPS and others on actual bear attacks.

If I saw that close up and was attacked or one of my loved ones I KNOW which side of the fence I would be on! So when it’s not personal you can take a wider view. But I still believe a human life over an animals life, every time! If this bear was involved in multiple attacks and was aggressive then it definitely should be removed and sometimes it’s the states and county government are the ones making these decisions and whether or not they have the funds to relocate animals that usually come back anyway. To me in these areas where there are lots of bears they definitely have to have planned ways of handling these situations and be set on that path! No exceptions! Or no one’s going to be happy. And by the way you’ll never please everyone!

You could hope to hit the eye but that's not easy on a moving target. Of course you could aim for the heart but even a direct hit won't stop a bear immediately. They are known to keep attacking for up to 6 seconds after being shot in the heart and a bear can inflict major damage in that amount of time. Bear spray is proven to be MUCH more efficient unless there are high winds.

Most people who has been attacked by bears do NOT want the bear killed as most attacks is when you surprise a bear and the many human mistakes we keep doing! Bears are a must to our eco systems, not my words, scientists who work around all animals will tell you that! We can’t keep killing the animals who has less and less space, to hunt, to breed and to be the fantastic animals they are! We camp in bear country ( of course carry bear spray ) and we are aware of the risk we take. Don’t assume that I don’t know what I’m talking about, because I’m quoting facts, not my opinion ! The bear always loose, they pay with their life each time there is an “ unhappy encounter” with a human !
There are so many reasons to keep these majestic animals around, and I hope that’s going to be the case in the end. I’m not a fan of reintroduction as most times the predators they reintroduce, will be eliminated because humans won’t give up lands to the animals that needs it…most times it doesn’t end well. The bears, the wolves, the cougars etc etc are all dangerous but to completly eliminate them? That will affect so many other species. There is no golden answer, but we humans do need to back off,and let nature be, in the areas they live. Has a stronghold as they said here, it would be so perfect if we could share territories like the native Americans did,but that’s likely never going to happen 😢

If a bear has cubs they will aggressively protect them. That is what bears do. If the people can't handle that in close proximity, then stop reintroducing them into areas they were phased out. This was all so unnecessary in the first place smh

It is cruel to animals to reintroduce apex predators into an area (where people had previously hunted them until they were no longer a threat), only to see their behavior didn't change (as they are still an apex predator), and will now need to be hunted until they are no longer a threat to this generation of people.
Maybe learn from the past. If you are all for "re-introducing" maybe first set aside land enclosed in such a way (I don't know of one & will leave that up to those who support this practice to find one) as to keep the apex predator in & humans out.
It could be that the area in Italy that couldn't live safely alongside a brown bear population in the past still can't. Could even be less probable since population has since increased.

My state stopped bureaucrats stealing money from Fish and Wildlife.
Instead they teamed up with sportsmens groups, and private landowners to create an enviroment that allows all to exist, reintroctuction as well as a well managed wildlife program.
    That includes hunting, trapping.

Just because you scare off some bears for a while doesn't mean they communicate that areas are off limits to all of the other bears. It also doesn't mean the ones scared further into the woods won't return. Other issue I have is where I live bear, deer, coyote, as well as human populations are expanding and colliding.
Hunting is one of the most effective ways to control populations and train predators to avoid humans.
But sadly as human population moves in .
      Often they are anti hunting.
Then as wildlife and human population expands, conflicts do as well.
      Where hunting is not allowed.
More deer, moose, bear are killed by vehicles, causing millions in damages and injury or death.
Bear population is growing as well.
Sightings as well as incidents have been increasing as well.
As people move into wildlife habitat then ban hunting.
Then want taxpayers to hire a professional to solve the problem.
Which usually means a paid poacher. Because they can break all the laws that normal hunters have to abide by and pay for.

Bears, like ALL animals have rights. This bear should have been relocated and not senselessly euthanized. so sad.

I think the attack was a defensive attackin nature and not predatory. They should've been left alone. That's common sense to me. I don't believe that this guy had some premonition of a bear boaring down on him. I think he's telling his story like this because his dog was the real culprit. I truly believe that was exactly what happened in this case
