    Nice updates. The trunks on the Yuccas are really a work of art. Great looking trunks. Main trunk gives the tree an air of elegance.

    It was thoughtful of your wife to get you that prickly pear cactus. I have 3 that I collected from the wild; I collected 2 about 30 years ago that I keep them outside, and 1 that I collected about 20(?) years ago on one of my last family visits with my father.
    Your trees are looking great!

    I had hundreds of pomegranates sprout, same thing, every single one grew completely different. There was one that stood out from the rest! My favorite. Pest control has me at my wits end right now. Thrips destroyed almost all my apple seedlings in just a few days. Your Yucca forest is so unique! Those oak are really neat too! Wonderful video!

    Great to see some work on the Yucca forest Nigel! Sorry to see the scale infestation affected so many of your trees. I hope you'll manage to eradicate them.
    Looking forward for the big prune and some closeups of those awesome Yucca trunks.

    I'm really liking your Ficus Elasticas. They are such nice dark green and looking healthy. The larches are also looking so vibrant. I'm envious for the rain. We tend to have pretty dry springs, which at its worst can be tricky for sowing and planting for the summer.

    That's why I love looking for oak seedlings, you really get a big variety in them. Last year I found a couple of them along an old goat pasture (of course the goats did some amazing pre bonsai work) their leaves are as big as my thumbnail, perfect for bonsai.
    And it's not just oaks, this weekend while I was walking around I found this amazing Acer pseudoplatanus/ sycamore seedling. Not joking its foliage looks like pink camouflage, probably some kind of Variegation. I would love to share a picture of this with you Nigel, I'm really excited about this one's future.

    Scale isn’t easy to treat. For anybody looking for an easy and effective treatment try a systemic pesticide. I use bug clear ultra in the uk. This pesticide will “get inside the tree” meaning anything feeding on it will be killed, waxy coating or not. It’s never harmed any of my trees either, where soap and water has.

    • @BlueJayBonsai
      @BlueJayBonsai 2 года назад +2

      Unfortunately for us, systemics were banned here. We can’t buy them even if we wanted to..

    • @TheRealOrangeGringo
      @TheRealOrangeGringo 2 года назад +2

      @@BlueJayBonsai Ah, that’s unfortunate. But it’s worth saying that I use them sparingly and for specific pests. I also never use systemics on flowering trees, especially if bees visit them (prunus for example).

    Nigel, sir, how often do you water your yucca bonsai? Im struggling and need advice.
    Is it unheard of to increase watering to every 3-5 days for an indoor yucca cane in an extremely well draining pot with soil similar to your bonsai soil mix?
    I have two indoor yucca can that I’ve reported in extremely well draining pot and soil that is very well draining. I use a water moisture meter and within a few days the soil reads “dry”. After almost a year experimenting I’m still struggling to know if I’m watering enough to too much. I’ve been doing about every 7-10 days but am considering shifting to 3-5 days.
    I did have yellowing leaves, and branches that died, but the main trunk was never soggy. Ans I never water when the soil feels damp.
    Thank you!

      Hello Simeon, I tend to water them based on light and temperature. If it is a sunny my Yucca forest will dry out and could require watering each day. If it is cloudy and cool, I might water once a week. I would try and keep your soil damp but on the dry side of damp. This applies to both indoor and outdoor growing. A grow light will really help the Yucca take up water and transpire it out the leaves. Here in Ontario, I haven't had any sun in over two weeks, so the grow light is really important to keep the tree healthy. You are correct to use a free draining soil, that should help the roots stay healthy. I also fertilize weakly every time I water using 20-20-20. I put a pinch of powdered fertilized into my watering can. If you overwater, I find the tips of the leaves will tend to go yellow and black. If you see this, let the soil dry out.

      Thank you very much, Nigel. You are the first person to encourage regular watering, and I agree with this. Almost everyone else is telling me to simply water once or twice a month… weekly watering or watering every 10 days has resulted in several “generations” of new leaves to be extremely brittle and crumble away.
      I will follow your advice and also add 20-20-20 fertilizer.
      Thank you very much for your time and help.
