@@MrFamous2525 so I've found that the most likely thing that happens to these units in our area is that the main processor starts to lift from the board. Now hear me out on this because I dint think that most anyone else would call this a propper trouble shooting procedure, however we do the best with what we have. Having little to no tooling for pcb repair I've developed a few methods. First is when it won't connect and I've already inspected the board and read battery voltage and all checks out clean. I gently twist the board while the key is on diagnostic tool is connected. If it connects then I have good reason to believe the hardware is ok and I've got a bad connection. Second is the beginning of the repair. This is the time that you have to decide if you want to do the short or long repair the short repair being king you take a heat gun you get it narrowed down to a smaller cone about the size of a dime or even as small as a pencil the pencil and you begin to heat the solder on the chip. As soon as you see it turn liquid you press the chip down and get the heat off. This is more of a temporary repair and not really a proper one but will suffice to get you off the road and back to the shop or safe location. Now the proper repair and it's not for the fan of heart in a part is starting out the same way getting it hot but when it turns liquid this time pull the chip off. The conductors underneath the chip are tiny and barely visible with the naked eye to my naked eye anyway, and you have to be very careful not to rip one of them out when you do this or its game over. After that you have to clean all the sotter off the board with some wick get it completely totally cleaned you have to have special flux it's clear looking stuff I can't remember what it's called but it's special. Then you reinstall your chip and reball it and resolder it, and this is the proper repair.
It can. It's just a matter of figuring out what's wrong. I was hoping a bad battery or an obvious component failure could be seen. I am still working on this.

Yep! If you have multiple different failures, a processor connection can indeed be the cause. Care to guess what is the cause? Yes, lead-free solder, that silly RoHS requirement. Years ago, we lost a critical satellite, it was found that lead-free solder was the culprit. Let's be real about this, it isn't a cell phone. This device is very small, there are but a few grams of solder on that circuit board. I have seen that the solution is to remove the chip, and "reball" the connections with real solder. Lead-free solder is brittle. Need any proof? It requires a proper setup, and a qualified technician, to do the job right. A few years ago, I went "whole hog" and invested in the proper gear, but I am just an enthusiast. These devices are critical for drivers to make a living. Full disclosure, I also hold a CDL.
You said that you have gotten a full set up. I want to get into repairing ecm ect. I'm a 15y mechanic and just intrested in doing different stuff. I repaired a bad ecm in a cummins 871 and now want to really jump in. What tools do you recommend from your setup? Hard to find exactly what all the set up takes. If it's cool you can email me also
@@MrFamous2525 it's simpler than you think, actually. The key issue here is that things have been miniaturized, the modules employ SMDs, surface mounted devices. You'll need a proper soldering station, one that includes an "air pencil" as it was known years ago. This warms the solder using a jet of controlled hot air. Look up Louis Rossman here on You Tube, He repairs Macbooks, he's the Zen Master of board repair. He is a lot of fun to watch, and he teaches proper soldering techniques. Equally important, I recommend a proper electronics microscope. Many are digital, and you can see a huge image on a computer screen. I have old eyes (I'm 57), so being able to see your work makes life much easier.

@@MIKEDUZZI420 any info you have on these would be great. I'm gathering info on how to repair ecms and have only found a couple of true repair guides. I repaired a 871 ecm but failure was visible
I am asking the same question - WHY cant this part be rebuilt?
It can. It's just a matter of figuring out what's wrong. I was hoping a bad battery or an obvious component failure could be seen. I am still working on this.
Do you need yours rebuilt?

Freightliner has me waiting more than 4 and a half months so far. No end in sight.
Reballing is the common fix from what I've heard.
Six mths later and the part I'd still impossible to get freightliner should be ashamed.
The supplier should be ashamed. From what ive heard ftl is trying to retool with different components.
