  • Step back in time with a visit to Lacock Village, Wiltshire, renowned for its charming timber-framed houses and unique independent shops. This picturesque village, owned almost entirely by the National Trust, is a living snapshot of history, often described as the most filmed village in England.
    A Village Steeped in History
Lacock’s history stretches back to its mention in the Domesday Book, with a population of 160-190 people, two mills, and even a vineyard. Today, many of its surviving houses date back to the 18th century or earlier, preserving the village's timeless appeal.
    Famous Filming Location
Lacock Village has been featured in numerous films and TV shows, including Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The village also appeared in a 2015 episode of Downton Abbey, where it was transformed into a 1920s livestock market, showcasing its authentic historical atmosphere.
    Discover Lacock Abbey
Founded in 1232 by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, Lacock Abbey is another highlight of the village. The Abbey and estate were sold to William Sharington during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, eventually passing into the Talbot family. The estate was home to photography pioneer Henry Fox Talbot from 1800 to 1877 and was generously donated to the National Trust in 1944 by Matilda Talbot.
    Visiting Lacock
The easiest way to visit Lacock is by parking in the National Trust parking area (pay and display for non-members). Simply follow the brown tourist signs from the A350 to the car park on Hither Way, near Bowden Hill.
Whether you're a history enthusiast, a film buff, or just looking for a charming village to explore, Lacock offers a unique experience that transports you to another era.

We’ve visited Lacock for over 20 years. I don’t recall seeing cars parked everywhere but maybe that’s because we visited during the day on weekdays. They certainly do ruin the view of the village.

Another viewer made a similar comment about the cars Rachel. They certainly do seem out of place. We visited on a Friday and it was our first visit. We thought they looked out of place too. Thank you for watching and we really appreciate your comment.

It should be no car village.

We thought the same thing when we visited. It seemed very odd to have such an old village with the streets lined with modern cars . However I guess the residents need someone to park. Perhaps residents should have a hidden car park somewhere close by with just a short walk to their homes?
