It's amazing how you just don't look ANYTHIG like Terry Butler!! lol Haha! JC - I bet he would probably be flattered that you learned his bass part in that great DEATH song... Chuck would appreciate it too! I actually got to hang out with & have a beer with both of them, along with Bill Andrews (drummer at the time), & Paul Masvidal (guitarist from Cynic, who filled in for James Murphy that night) when on the Sp. HLNG. tour in 1990, when I was 18 . They were just so "down to earth" & cool people. I was sitting with them at the bar before their set started, while the opening band was on. - A great memory for me!
Awesome job, huge respect! \m/ by the way which pattern are you using for the three fingers technique, like do you go 321 321 or maybe something like 1232 1232? Also when you play parts that require to often jump up and down between strings do you switch to two fingers or you keep using three? Just asking because its been months I practice it and still find sometimes easier just to play with two fingers and I keep wondering how long does it take to play so fast and smooth like you do? Respect! \m/
Many thanks for the kind words my friend! For this song, I apply a 321 pattern, i.e. 3213 2132 1321 3213 for a bar of 16th notes, and this is also my main/preferred use of three finger technique. However, there are certainly many situations where a 3212/1232 pattern would be more suitable due to the rhythm of the song, and that is something I am currently practicing on improving. Where there are a lot of switches I would normally try to use a two finger pattern, if it is too fast things get more difficult. Normally I try to use a 321 technique and "raking" notes when descending the strings. However this is clearly a situation where I could improve. It takes a while getting the three finger technique up to speed. My training of this technique has been very inconsistent and therefore has taken several years to get to. However, I think this is achievable faster, perhaps in a few months. I would say that the key is to do it REALLY slow when practicing to get control of every movement. When learning the 321 pattern for 16th notes, it also helps to accent the first note of each beat to get the right rhythmic feel. All the best and good luck with your practice! \m/ Let me know should you have any more questions on my three finger technique or anything else!
