      +iron mask of hell Well its actually called Ghost in the Shell: The Movie but they changed it in the US. My guess so that people wouldn't get it confused for the old movie.

    *If anyone is interested in the Ghost in the Shell franchise but doesn't where to start, you can watch it like this*
    >Ghost in the Shell (1995) >Ghost in the Shell: Innocence>Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex> Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society
    Then Arise, if you feel like it. I would also advise to read the manga. It's pretty different from any adaptation of the series.

    I don't think the "technobabble" should be considered a flaw, it's a big part of the original manga and I think it's the appeal for a lot of people.

    the first ghost in the shell didn't feature annoying "techno-babble", imo. it just had a lot of philosophically interesting dialoge sequences...

    • @FrancoisDressler

      Chris doesn't like Blade Runner so I can see why he would say something like.

    • @videotrash
      @videotrash 8 лет назад +3

      TheVideoInvader really? blade runner is one of my favorite movies, but I think it differs a lot from ghost in the shell in that it doesn't try to explain the mechanics of its world very explicitly. that definitely happened in gits, but as it was done well I can't complain about it.

    • @FrancoisDressler
      @FrancoisDressler 8 лет назад +2

      erraticbrain Blade Runner is my favorite film of all time and you're right. Instead it shows you the mechanics of the world with lush production design and art direction but GitS is great also.

    • @creeker124
      @creeker124 3 года назад

      Was thinking this ARISE focused more on political intriuge/ espionage. a little hard to follow, but techno babble? NOPE

  • @avidian888
    @avidian888 8 лет назад +13

    I especially LOVE those looooooong conversations in all GITS movies and series. They contain the most intelligent thoughts, that I´ve ever seen in Movies or Animes. Nonetheless I´d also give it a C+, because it was not a movie for theaters and not on the level of the previous movies.
    Thanks for reviewing Chris!

  • @Tomzo711

    Sadly it seems Miyazaki of Ghibli Studios was right. The anime industries are full of otaku's and they are ruining anime.

    • @Lightice1
      @Lightice1 8 лет назад +20

      +charon7111 What nonsense. Arise was ruined by the greedy producers who just went by the numbers to create a show that no-one had asked for while cutting corners and using product placement for extra cash. A proper Ghost in the Shell geek could have created something worthwhile to the franchise.

    • @rolfathan
      @rolfathan 8 лет назад +25

      +charon7111 Honestly, it's kind of like saying "pop music is ruining the music industry"
      No, real music is still being made. So are good animes. The "otaku" stuff is just easily digestible and makes a lot of money.

    • @ZerogunRivale
      @ZerogunRivale 8 лет назад +4

      I'm going to somewhat disagree with all of the above. Arise, simply put, is ruined by a set of writers and a director who doesn't know what he's doing. Producers want to make money? I'm fine with that. After all, that's what they're hired to do. The problem is when those producers hire people who have no idea who don't know what they're doing. There are plenty of things that are amazing and well made that began as concepts a producer simply wanted to make money off of. The issue is who you manage to hire and your method of making that money.

    • @ARandomGuy24
      @ARandomGuy24 8 лет назад +3

      +ZerogunRivale The movie and Arise fail because they didn't get what makes GITS work. Not that stuff Miyzaki was going on about.

    I think the long "technobabble" is actually the best part of the ghost in the shell movies and series. really makes you think and wonder. plus the robotic animations whenever they talk just makes sense, and is less distracting from what the characters are saying. Like a good detective film, it forces you to pay attention and think.

  • @PerryTheOneArmLegend

    Personally Chris, I loved it. It felt like a giant love letter to the overall franchise with certain voice actors "passing the torch" if you will (sorry trying to avoid spoilers), being somewhat surprised by certain events in the story, the ending being a Massive homage to one of my favorite scenes in the series, seeing the team all work together in combat was really welcomed, action scenes were beautifully done like what you said, small bits of humor throughout the film, and the soundtrack was great. Ghost in the Shell i will admit is my overall favorite franchise since it has yet to disappoint me when the big picture is considered, across the manga, the Oshii films, SAC, and now Arise. Is there technobabble in the movie? Yes sure, but honestly (and maybe this is just me) but I've never been overwhelmed by the amount it presents since I love how GITS challenges me to think faster or hander. I'd love to discuss the series in more detail if or whenever you have time just for a friendly chat about it..

    Techno babble is fine as long as it's building towards something. The reason the original movie and every episode of Stand Alone Complex were interesting was because the techno babble and political weren't isolated. They were made part of the drama where they were actually steps towards understanding the situation and solving the crime. It was continuously having a dynamic impact on the progression of events.
    The problem with Arise and even the original manga is that very little seems to connect at times. Things are mentioned, things are talked about, but it never feels like it's building towards something. Add on the fact that the action scenes in Arise (and I assume The New Movie) feel as if they have nothing at stake, and everything feels disconnected and boring. The technobabble feels more like exposition and less like build-up. SAC and Arise have a lot in common, but it just goes to show how masterful direction and writing can separate what is one of the greatest anime of all time (SAC) from one of the most disappointing installments in the franchise (Arise).
    On top of that, GITS has always used these conversations as interesting ways to talk about interesting ideas and concepts, something sorely missing in movies today.

    The entire idea behind GITS was it's techno-philosophical babble - that is what made it stand out, it was meant to be jarring by asking difficult questions such as what it means to be alive and our false presumptions of identity.

I enjoyed it to the point where I want to see more of this series. I found the action fast paced, well-animated with good voice acting. I wonder if the low intensity of emotion is a symbol for the cyber/android aspect of this anime's theme?

    After SAC it just feels that there’s been a dip in quality with the Ghost in the Shell franchise. I watched “ARISE” and read the Japanese manga adaption and that made me less intrigued to watch this new film. The newer properties seem to want to focus more on exposition to the point of pretension.

    Nice review. I'm a new subscriber to your channel and two anime I would love to see you review are Madoka Magica and Terror in Resonance. Madoka is my #1 show and the only thing I rank above Cowboy Bebop, a true masterpiece of tragic storytelling. Terror in Resonance meanwhile is the most recent collaboration between Yoko Kanno and Shinichiro Watanabe. It does have some plot inconsistencies, but there are sequences that are truly transcendent where music, visuals, and character all coalesce into something amazing.

    Hey Chris! I am a big fan of your reviews and what makes me especially excited is when you, on rare occasions, review anime since I am a tremendously big fan of that sort of entertainment. I think you are spot on, on most of your anime reviews and therefore I would really love to see more of them. As there are lots of anime I would like to recommend the most sincere recommendation for you to watch is the Fate- series. I'm not recommending it only because it's one of MY favourites but also because , judging by what appears to be your taste, YOU would love everything from the story to the unmatched animation and music. You would be doing yourself a favour watching it, I promise. Anyways keep up the awesome work and please do us anime- crazies a favour and review as much anime as you have time for.

    Chris, did you ever see "Song of the Sea", the irish animation which got an oscar nomination last year? The drawings are beautiful and the themes and characters are seriously convincing. Would've thought it's right up your street and would love to hear what you think.

    You know there's a fifth episode to Arise right? I think it came out not too long after they decided to cut each of the original 'borders' of the OVA into 2 episode releases each for television broadcast as well as creating the 2 episodes after the initial 8, making 2 more episodes of new content. The last two episodes were compounded as the 5th 'border' of the arise mini series providing for one more theatrical short film before the release of this film concluding the Arise series.

  • @ejeckk

    One of the hallmarks of anime is near-static imagery. It gives the watcher a chance to fully contemplate the scene. It is one of the aspects I first noticed and now much enjoy about anime. But I do find it interesting that much of the original "Ghost in the Shell" has exactly those elements of lots of static to near-static shots and yet you consider it one of your favorite animes of all time. I know all reviews are subjective; however, this one seems a bit contradictory for the aforementioned reason.
    I enjoy reviews. Keep up the good work.

    Can somebody tell me what anime this is:
    it seems to be in the future - it is possible to see the last thing a person saw before he died. lots of robots around.
    female police officer (she could handle guns very well) and a male lead character go to destroy a 'system' and the woman shoots it 'in the eye' - with her right hand wounded she hits it with her left hand.
    I would be very grateful if someone helped me. thank you!

    Are all the _Ghost in the Shell_ shows and films in a single timeline or are there different tellings/worlds?
    And what order would one watch everything in?

    • @ARandomGuy24
      @ARandomGuy24 8 лет назад +1

      +Rhett Gedies The first two GITS movies (GITS: 1995 and GITS: innocence) take place in one timeline. All of Stand Alone Complex takes place in a separate timeline. And the rest of the stuff made after it (Arise, this movie) take place in a third timeline.
      You can watch it like this.
      >Ghost in the Shell (1995) >Ghost in the Shell: Innocence >Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
      >Then Arise, if you feel like it.
      The timelines for the anime adaptations aren't nearly as confusing as it may sound.
      I would also advise to read the manga. It's pretty different from any adaptation of the series.

    One of my biggest issues with the entire ARISE series is that the Major seems so ridiculously overpowered to the point it seems like it's pointless for her to even have a team. Her power level is WAY over 9000!!! It's hard for me to explain. It's like back in the older series everybody in the team had their own specific skills that were equally important. But while watching ARISE it just feels like she got the team together to do all the work that she could easily do herself but just doesn't feel like doing.

    • @masterblaster5342
      @masterblaster5342 7 лет назад

      You should watch the animated movie. Preferably the 95 version. The live action movie seems to be based off that. The series is pretty much it's own story based off the 95 movie. You shouldn't mess with the show until you've seen the animated movie.
