Believe or not, moana is voice by a Polynesia native. The Disney crew was there when she was practicing for her 16 celebration which was two weeks later and her final gift was to voice moana aliho carovero
If I’m not mistaken the whole song is in composed in this c note. C=Sea Note idk if Lin thought of it that deeply but I want to believe it.
When you remember Auli'i Cravalho was 14/15 during the recording process you really have to admire how good a performance this is. Her vocal talent at that age is truly top-tier.
@Lakacia Lloyd This is why Disney needs to hire more unknown voice talent instead of relying on big names. Sometimes unknowns like Auli'i have incredible talent the world might not otherwise get to see.
"Moana" is definitely one of the better modern day Disney movies.
Agreed, so underrated.
I dunno, I know it's only my opinion, but I think it's definitely one of the best Disney movies ever made. The story, the music, the performances... and the fact that they did so much to make it culturally accurate, it just all works so well together.
@@felixhenson9926 what are you talking about? Moana was a hit! I don’t think that word thinks what you guys think it means.
I think Lin Manuel Miranda is the best musical theatre/ musical film composers of this time. He's so clever in his lyrics and music choices
He brings a sort of theatrical rap to his lyrics, they have that kind of flow to them. Clever rhymes and syncopated rhythms that are play fast and loose with the actual beat of the music. He really is incredibly talented. He also has an extremely good grasp of the importance and use of dynamics.
@@mycroft16 oh totally. I'd love to sit in a room with him and just see his mind at work
I'd say one of the best but not necessarily the best. For example, in my opinion, it would be a close competition between him and Andrew Lloyd Webber for more recent musical composers, but musicals have been a thing since the Victorian era. And while musicals from that long ago have mostly been forgotten by most people these days, if people at the time had not enjoyed them, we would not have musicals currently. Just because their music may not appeal as much to modern audiences, does not mean none of them would compete for best musical theatre composer of all time. Composers compose for their current audiences, not future audiences.
And he's a music theory nerd which means he knows exactly what he's doing every single time. So he likes to be extremely clever.
I loved watching him nerd out when he was working with Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins Returns.
This song was nominated for an Oscar and you should totally react to the live performance. Auli’i Cravalho is the actress who plays Moana and she was phenomenal singing it live
And she was only 14 when she recorded the movie. Girl has SERIOUS talent.
and while performing it live, a dancer with a flag hits the back of her head... she handles it so well....
LIN MANUEL WAS ROBBED OF HIS OSCAR FOR THIS SONG.
this and dos oruguitas. Man was robbed twice
He was fucking robbed i tell you
He was instructed to write a song comparable to “Let it go” because of how well Frozen did, this was not the original song he had presented. Disney tends to do things like this, very comparable music in successive films. Even the songs in Polynesian were told to be comparable to the opening song of Frozen. I wish they would let a writer just write. It makes the entire Academy second guess every song from Disney. The song is great, but he didn’t receive my vote.
@@joshuacoldwater don’t worry they learned their lesson from that because look at the success of the encanto soundtrack when they let lin work his magic
Who's that
This is one of my favorite songs ever. As someone raised by the sea and now landlocked I can hear the ocean in the song. In the beginning in the vocal delivery you can hear almost hear the little gentle waves washing up the beach and back as it slowly build to eventually sound like the power of waves crashing.
I don't really know what to say but I just wanted to say that this was very beautiful and probably will change how I feel about the song when I hear it again. So I just really appreciate your comment
It was the one and only song my 8 y.o. daughter would sing when it came out. Non. Stop. So that next spring, we did a family trip to the Outer Banks in North Carolina and that's when she found out I rented a little catamaran for the day and we went sailing. Took her a week to calm down again. 🥰
As someone said before, down below, Tick-Tick-Boom! was created and originally performed by Johnathan Larson (the guy who created 'RENT'). The movie version of it was directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Also, fun fact I believe, if I remember correctly, Moana came out in the year 2016, about a year after Hamilton premiered on Broadway (sometime in 2015).
The actress was a virtually unknown 14 year old when she sung this. There is something inherently magical about Polynesian singers.
Audrey I really want to see you react to Where You Are. It’s another Moana song filled with so much character, and it’s quite underrated to be honest.
Yes I love ittt
Auli’i Cravalho is playing Janis in the mean girls movie musical
I really like the song when she gives Tefiti back her heart.
This song is just so hauntingly beautiful. I also love the Japanese version; her voice is on point! My 5 year old daughter is just getting interested in singing and I'm showing her your videos to help her improve her technique!
Her performance at the Oscars is so good!
I love the reprise of this song later in the film - I'd love to see a reaction to it!
Always surprised me how Frozen was so lauded over its musical numbers but Moana fell off so fast. I always thought it was the superior film both in story and soundtrack. But then I lived on Oahu for almost 8 years and part of my heart is still there.
Because frozen is "the best" for they literally advertised a frozen ıı song as let go which is so annoying (hate that song yhe others are aren't bad but let go is just ugh) Moana was so much better
Lin has unlocked the key to what he calls the classic Disney "I want" song.
I think Auli'I was 14 when she did this role!
Yes
That’s incredible, she sounded so mature!
She was! This was her first job I always found her acting and singing super impressive. I don't think she could've really done any better than she did.
@@inkeriananas Glee Club... Also was funny how the Director was telling her "Could you be even more happy?" lol "Imagine we just told you you got the role"
It'd be cool to see you react to her singing this at the 2017 academy awards. She killed it, especially being so young and she even got hit with a prop and didn't react.
You just hit me right in the heart talking about jobs you think you'd love to have and then finding out you don't enjoy them as much as you thought. I have done so many jobs in my 36 years. I'm an Army Veteran, worked in IT been an apprentice electrician, done work in construction, worked as a restaurant dishwasher and later a cook, I went to school for car repair, spent a little time in coding and video game development, and even spent some time streaming on twitch... And now, I work retail. And I actually like my job!!! You never know what you were meant for until you find it.
You should listen to the portuguese version "Saber Quem Sou". It was sung by Any Gabrielly and she was only 13/14 at the time and it was an amazing job. She's an actress too but today she has become a great great singer!
Her voice is beautiful and I love this song
now that you mentioned Lin-Manuel, how about you react to In the Heights too??
I know you already know this, but I just saw you for the first time ever eight minutes and fifteen seconds ago....you really know what you're talking about. I love how easy it is for you to immediately zero in, directly, on a simple simple thing that trips up a whole phrase (overweighting the low end of the octave jumps). I never would have heard myself doing that, but it's as intuitive as when I give the simple simple thing that's tripping up a dancer's quadruple pirouette.
I didn't know Moana at all until six months ago when a meeting was held in which I was told I was doing the choreography. I listened to it on my way home that evening, and I had a longer drive. I had never heard any of the songs. I played the prologue track so I'd know the universe.....I was ecstatic at the Polynesian wailing and the motion of the instruments and the drums....then right away I skipped to "the big ballad there must be one". I wept the first time I heard this. I lived abroad for 13 years and traveled this part of the world (Southeast Asia) extensively doing theatre and dance, and I've just recently come home and I have no idea what I am doing with my life.... and now that I've planted my feet back in the ground back at home after all these years of sitting on these actual islands to become the artist I am now, the line where the sky meets the sea calls to me more than ever before.
I looked for the reprise after I wept. Why not kick myself while I'm down. I had only heard this song once ever in my life at this point, so the satisfaction of getting another taste of this text and these progressions brought it all back, harder. I ugly wept. Someone at a red light was very obviously concerned.
I didn't know the Song of the Ancestors was coming. I gave up. I pulled over, and I just sobbed for a while.
I really love the film and especially that song. It's so beautiful, full of passion and also really strong.
Actually there is also another part of it, a Reprise, which follows a little bit later in the film, but I'd say it goes in a similar direction like the last refrain. Just wanted to acknowledge. ^^
I always enjoyed watching videos like this on how a vocal coach explains how a professional didn't do their job right on conducting a song. They way the person is singing is how they wanted it to be or how that person personally sings. No one sings exactly the same as another person so to say "oh the note wasnt high enough", it comes down to what that person can specifically do themselves and their style. You as any kind of coach should know this. You are praising the person who made this song but at the same time criticizing on "mistakes" when they arent mistakes but again what they wanted for the song. One thing you and other vocal coaches fail to realize.
I would love to see more In The Heights reactions. That musical/movie is so underrated
She is incredible, but I wish you react and analysed the Portuguese version, Any Gabrielly does an unabelivable job
I meant Brasilian 🇧🇷 version * my bad😅
Yesss
Totally
Owww, the mamma Audrey moment🥺🥺❤️
The music in Moana is amazing
i actually sang this song for a talent show and i got to the finals!!!! the only thing i felt difficult abt this song is when and where i take my breath but otherwise i think i am able to sing in the original key, so please make a video breaking down this song for the ppl who want to sing this masterpiece
Auli'i Cravalho starred in Rise, a Glee-like series but with theatre. I loved it even though they canceled it
I love Moana like it’s such a classic Disney Princess movie 💖
what you explained at 5:18....i finally understand now why i get frustrated when this one singer i like doesn't go up the other octave. he can do it, but he never does in songs and i always wondered why it bothered me lol
This song gives me chills
Thanks for the pep talk about our life’s paths! It was so cool to hear it and through your own personal experience 🫶🏽
Probably one of my favorite Disney songs. Auli'i Cravalho nails it. If you want to see something cool, there's a video of her hanging out with friends and casually belting this out.

I absolutely love this reaction and your explanation of her vocal techniques.
Please one day please please please react to Disney Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl. I heard Stephanie Beatrice was sick that day but I think you will still like it.
i absolutely looove this Disney and especially this song omg
If you want to do more animated stuff I recommend Steven universe the movie. While you may not fully understand the plot I think you would enjoy the vocals. They also did a live concert at comic con with some of the songs from the movie. The vocalists include Estelle, Aimee man, Deedee Magno Hall, and Zach callison.
Tick Tick Boom was only directed by Lin Manuel Miranda. The score was by Jonathan Larson.
I casually watch your videos and you’re so passionate and captivating. Thanks for the content.
OMG, that idea about it being like that last year of high school. That hit me hard. You're totally right, and I wish I had been as inspired as Moana when I finished high school.
Auli i has a perfect voice I love it
Even with the explanatory interruptions, this song gets to me. Bravo!
I fricking love moana
I love your videos. I try to follow your tips as I struggle to get my voice back after a long stay in the hospital on a ventilator! God bless you for your guidance and tips!
Hi im a really big fan and i love music thank you for making this channel
have you reacted to "show yourself" from frozen 2, it's one of the best songs from the movies
the live version is so good
Remember, she was h14 years old when she did this..gifted voice .
Please react to the version of this song in Portuguese br 🇧🇷. The voice actress is singer Any from the global pop group Now United. And it's just beautiful, you'll be amazed.
Pleeaase
yeees
please please react to the ancestor's song from this movie!
Omg I love this song so much. It's so beautiful.
My high school choir does a senior send off song every year. And this song was my class's song when I graduated high school. And at the end we sang "And one day we'll know how far we'll go." So when you talked about high school, I just got emotional.
Ooooo, this is one of my favorite Disney song!! I love your reactions especially the Encanto ones! Eeeeeeep! Perhaps you can do more Moana reactions. I love that movie!
Holding the M sounds more meditative, which adds to the dramatic change in the song from contemplative to passionately assertive. This is show music not concert music. Lin Manuel Miranda is a genious in makeing music beautiful, relfective of the character, mood explicit and essential to the telling of the story. Sometimes you have to break the rules to surpass the rules.
4:07 I can't get enough of the drums
I can't hear any talk about modulating keys without singing, "Don't modulate the key and not debate with me," in my head.
I was at work the other day when I heard this song and I couldn’t remember where I heard it from or the lyrics because the speaker didn’t sound so clear. Then after desperate searches for a Musical cartoon movie and seeing the title, it clicked cause i saw this movie years ago! Btw that piggy ( Lua ) is everywhere on amazon lol. From “piggy” banks to oinking plushies ( cute for kids ).
Pigs name is Puua (Pooh-a) ❤ he's my favourite 😍
You should definetely react to "How fair I'll go" in different languages. There are so many talents there too.
Can you review “I am Moana” from the second half of the movie. It’s my favourite song in the movie and makes me so emotional 😭 💔
you should do a movie review of In the Heights. I think you did like one or two song reviews from the broadway version but i havent seen you do a review of the movie version.
id love to see you react to the Ballad of Jane Doe from Ride The Cyclone! Or any of the songs from it. It's a beautiful musical!
you have to check out the voctave acapella version of this song!!!
Lin manuel miranda wrote this.
Lin Manuel Miranda slay again ❤❤
React The Brazilian pleaseee - Ane Gabriely
Will you be analysing “We Know the Way”? It’s my favourite of all the songs.
I would love to see a compare to Voctave 's how far I go as well!
Yes!!!!!!!!!!
Same!!
You should react to her live performance at the Oscar’s
Play it now play it now
Would really appreciate your take on the Alessia Cara version on the same soundtrack
I love this song and the whole scene beacuse I love ocean and I am just waiting to finally be actually by the ocean.
If you like this song, I would recommend listening to some of the international dubs!
If you thought Auli'i was beautiful and strong in English, you should hear her in Hawaiian! The Russian dub is recognized as one of the best (with good reason), though I personally love the Norwegian dub best. Even if you don't do reaction videos for them, you should give them a listen! I personally can't go back to listening to Disney in just one language anymore! (Just make sure the audio is good quality before really listening to the full song.)
Mona's voice actress was 14 and now she is 21
Damn I want to a see a reaction to Show Yourself or Into the Unknown from Frozen II
❤ this one
Please do a reaction of Id Rather Be Me by Auli’i in the new mean girls movie!!
Funny coincidence, I went to a summer intensive run by Moana’s vocal coach once 😂
I NEED her to see the minor key version of this song by Chase Holfelder!
Pua (the little piggy) makes me smile :)
Edit- why does the verb ‘flicking’ make me feel deathly uncomfortable 😂
Please do a reaction to Celine Dion's new song "LOVE AGAIN". Pleaseeee
Have you watched the Moana medley by Voice Play featuring Rachel Potter?
I recommend Watching Vivo another Lin Manuel Miranda film with his songs and him singing I think you would love the music
I really hope auli’i will be moana in the love action. She has to be
I sang this in chorus for a performance
The line at 4:37 I think, is: "I can lead with pride", I don't know how you missed that.
It would be awesome to see you react and analyze Sweeny Todd Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Bit disappointed that you didnt mention the vocally one of the most famous octave jump is "Somewhere Over the rainbow"
Plissss reacts the latin versión “cuan lejos voy”
You should comment on the greek version of the song sung by marina Satti.
ruclips.net/video/_FSkSDEiHQ8/видео.html
Man I need Moana's hair I want mine like her's
Hi, bit of a tangent but your love for theatrical songs and great singing and at the same time vulnerability and mental health stuff made me think you might really like Ren and Chinchilla, two independent UK artists that are up and coming at the moment. Have you heard of them?
To be fair in her particular case taking a canoe on an extended voyage when none of her people remember how to navigate should have ended very tragically
You should really review MIRABEL'S VILLAIN SONG!!!
Can you please do ballad of jane doe from ride the cyclone? I wont spoil things but the singer does something pretty impressive!
graduating school
Moana really has great songs. Love them more than Frozen 1 if I'm being honest
oh, me too. Moana is much better than Frozen (even though I love both)
