I tried your home flux recipe and man, it worked amazing. I challenged it on the same board against (famous) Amtech 559 and solder made with the mix you recommended worked flawlessly. Hi. Thankyou so much for sharing, I'd had to wait for half an hour for you to find your different fluxes but it worth it!! Just for you and other people to know: if you want to buy rosin or colophony for REALLY cheap search the one classic dancers are using on their shoes. It's exactly the same colophony you're using for soldering but it sells in bags of 500gr for something like ten dollars!!!

Best electronics channel on youtube. I just love it. Thank you for education. It's inspirational tutorials like these that save the planet from electronic waste. Love the making your own flux. You can clearly see it can withstand a higher temperature coefficient - which protects the chip from over heating when both salvaging parts or replacing parts.

Greetings from the US Gulf Coast. The reason folks use a fume extractor is not the rosin - it's the solder. To use one or not is a personal choice, but folks in the electronics craft tend to have higher blood lead assays than most, and that's not a good thing. Rosin flux has been around for years, and is still one of the best types for electronics work. The clear stuff looks like rework flux. Seems like it would be handy enough for the kind of work you do. Melting rosin goes more easily if it is finely powdered. An improvised mortar and pestle works well enough for this. Rosin attracts water, so keep rosin powder in a dark container when not in use. For those of us not using e-cigarettes, save the empty bottles from Shave Secret shaving oil or from any of several eye drops. Good stuff, man! I mean to try making my own solder flux as soon as I can collect some pine rosin.
I know exactly what you mean. My first experience of soldering was around 1970 when I was still a boy. I just love this smell it brings me back to that time. The substance he is using here to make electronic soldering flux is called: "Colophonium" or "Colophony". This is a fancy name for the naturally occurring yellow resin (rosin) from the Yellow Pine Tree. Prepared rosin flux comes in 50gram tins for around $6 to $9. You can buy 1.5 lbs. of "Colophony" rosin for $16 and make your own dissolving it in isopropyl alcohol - That's equal to 13 tins, enough to last quite awhile.

I just got my 100g of Rosin Flux today after ordering it last year September, I didn't think I'd get it as our post service in South Africa is the worst in the world!!! But finally, it arrived... Looking forward to using it and thank you for the recommendation!
This is absolutely crazy! Those expensive flux is, expensive! And then on top of that, they are not easily available in my area or even closeby cities. I have suffered tremendously over the years due to lack of good flux as a hobby soldering person. But I had these $1 cheap ones available in like a 2 minute drive from where I live and I have ignored these all these years thinking they were "cheap" and "not worth it"! Little did I know, these were the best one the Earth had to offer 😅😅 And these also sell for like $0.10 per 20g. 😅😅 I am surely buying some of these Inshallah. A big thank you, Sorin. ❤❤ This made my day today, Alhamdulillah!
WOW, I never knew you could make liquid solder using isopropyl alcohol. No need to purchase any more Amtech solder now. I recommend to SUBSCRIBE because ERS is sharing over 20+ years of secrets and experience. I just wish these videos were on RUclips sooner because I could have done so much more. Hopefully I can share some things that will help ERS too. Thanks for sharing!
cool channel. I subbed. I am new to soldering, I want to work on some gaming consoles, xbox, xbox360, playstation, and I bought "Flux" from my electronics store, and when I opened it it was "just" Kolophonium hard, and I had no clue how to use it. Thanks to your video, now I know. I'll dissolve it in Isopropyl alcohol.
Hello Sir, I made a flux from rosin and nail paint remover right now. Its cost me around 25 rupees per 100 grams and thinner for just 30 rupees total cost was 55 rupees. And this one is best flux. Thanks for explanation.
Just to clarify this for people who are new to soldering: even good quality solder that contains rosin flux already (as all electronics soldier should) will not work very well if you put a blob of it on the tip of the iron and carry it over to the work, because the flux is already evaporating and burning off from the second that the solder is melted onto the tip. Enormous sattering you clean the tip of the iron wet it with a little bit of solder, apply the tip of the iron to the area being soldered and touch your satyr wire to the connection close to, but not actually touching, the tip.
Again great tip! I learnt to solder when I was aged in single figures and have been for 30+ years now but was never really taught the importance of flux, wrongly assuming that flux-cored solder was enough - it's only after watching re-work videos that I recently bought a 50ml bottle of liquid rosin flux which was about 5 quid - it will probably last me a lifetime as a hobbyist, just just like my reel of full-fat leaded solder which I've had since the 80s ;) I might make up some of your home-brew flux to compare :)
Thankyou sir, ive learnt something which i never would have . May God almighty grant u long and healthy life for taking time out to share you knowledge.
Wow thank you! The difference in price is vast and it can stay like that now. I'm grabbing some solid Rosin and dissolving it in Isopropanol to make a batch up because _Common Sense_ I Vape too, so the empty Juice Bottles will be useful
Fantastic video - I've ordered some Rosin Flux as you recommend (I already have some isopropyl alcohol) so cant wait to make my own liquid flux! Thanks :)
In a closed glass bottle and in the ultra sonic bath it is faster. OIn an open bottle in warm uS bath if the mix is too fluid. I would use the hot air to warm the mix It works as expected, while some paper towel a brush and isopropyl alcohol are mandatory to clean the residue. I noticed on videos that some pros use special "towels" that leave no fiber, to absorb the residue of flux. It is cleaner than brushing with alcohol (and the brush bristles are kept more clean, not polluted with rosin) However, I noticed that your rosin is more yellow than brownish, certainly a sign of quality
I just bought this rosin flux by mistake (thought it was a paste) and believed I was stuck but looking at your vid I think it'll do the job nicely ..Thanks .. Yeah :P
maybe i was lucky guy and got no fake but i just want to tell that im using the Amtech flux for several years now and made very good experiences with BGA on the IRheater. It stays liquid and clear through the whole process and needs a lot of heat before evaporating.
The smell brings me back to a 1979 audio shop, for some reason all the speakers and audio equipment smelled like rosin, it is how you knew you were in a audio equipment store of the era.
Fitting in with what was said in this video, rosin is a mixture of abietic, isopamaric, isopamaric and other weak organic acids with a softening point of approx 76C (169F), melting point of 140-176C (284-349F), and b.p. of 425 - 440C (797-824F).
Thanks for your info on this. Have had so much trouble buying a decent RMA flux or a paste & none have worked, even the most expensive. I can’t even buy liquid types now because airlines won’t carry it to my country! Just bout 10 tins of this... to make my own.
In Romania, in the old days until now, we use this kind of flax, Kalafonia, called "sacâz" and Sorin, of course, knows this because probably started electronics here. We also had a recipe of various substances, mixed with alcohol that dissolves them to make a good liquid flax, kolofonia was principal substance in this mix
LOL sacâz. I used this long long time ago with the famous radio progres soldering gun. Another uses.... a rock of colofonium + piece of string + a thumbtack + a neighbor window = fun
No...... I am Old School, from the 70s this was not our credo Granted that we didn't put too much emphasis in the beginning on fume extractors but.. WE ALWAYS MADE AN EFFORT TO AVOID THE FUMES. whether that meant, leaning back a bit whether that meant , blowing the smoke away while soldering we always did something but, did we say..... ahhhhh breath it in like there's no tomorrow, HAHA NO WE DIDN'T
My dad would always say it would be fine but in my experience it's good for people who know what they're doing also for big connections it's fine and in some cases if that pad or whatever you're trying to solder to is dirty there's just an unforgiving amount of flux in the solder for beginners especially but even as I got better it's absolutely vital on small surfase mount components and any part that I can't trust they kept it clean
I must thank you! I have been soldering for more than 40 years and have NEVER seen anyone actually perform a side by side comparison of flux (paste/liquid) Vs Rosin (solid/mixed). KUDOS!

I also love the smell of flux -- One of the best things about soldering!
Chaos rules ...more like a comedy show 😂😂😂
cool channel. I subbed. I am new to soldering, I want to work on some gaming consoles, xbox, xbox360, playstation, and I bought "Flux" from my electronics store, and when I opened it it was "just" Kolophonium hard, and I had no clue how to use it. Thanks to your video, now I know. I'll dissolve it in Isopropyl alcohol.
by far the best electronics info i have seen. very well done and explained clearly.
Hello Sir,
I made a flux from rosin and nail paint remover right now.
You are my inspiration Sorin. With love, Manasseh Mukuwa in Zambia-Africa
Greetings from Poland Sorin! You use Polish Rosin - kalafonia . You have right - smell of Rosin is soooo good :)
Serio? To jest polska kalafonia? :)
I am a simple man, I see a Russian who says "trust me", I give my paw up and click on subscribe. Thanks for a nice recipe for a liquid flux.
He just basically "thinned it"
He's not Russian you ba$$tard
I just used some reclaim from my dab rig, shit works great, and like you said that rosin smoke just hits different🤙😉
dababadoo
You put liquid flux in your vape bottles? now I know why your crazy, you been vaping the flux hahaha good video.
Jajaj
A good one it is.....kikikikikiki
Hahaha, yes, few times been close to fill my vape with flux :)))
Britec09 q
Flux it.
Wow thank you! The difference in price is vast and it can stay like that now.
I'm grabbing some solid Rosin and dissolving it in Isopropanol to make a batch up because _Common Sense_
I Vape too, so the empty Juice Bottles will be useful
I've just been using flux core solder for years, works fine.
Hi Sorin, I did it & it works delightfully! Thanks for sharing!
this method is so old
Fantastic video - I've ordered some Rosin Flux as you recommend (I already have some isopropyl alcohol) so cant wait to make my own liquid flux!
It is cleaner than brushing with alcohol (and the brush bristles are kept more clean, not polluted with rosin)
However, I noticed that your rosin is more yellow than brownish, certainly a sign of quality
I love you man, thank you so much for giving us a part of your 30+ years of wisdom
Just take a shot every time this guy says flux and you will become the flux.
I just bought this rosin flux by mistake (thought it was a paste) and believed I was stuck but looking at your vid I think it'll do the job nicely ..Thanks .. Yeah :P
Nu m-am gandit niciodata la idea sa dizolv Fluxu-ul Rosin cu alchool isopropilic o idee geniala !!!!!
maybe i was lucky guy and got no fake but i just want to tell that im using the Amtech flux for several years now and made very good experiences with BGA on the IRheater. It stays liquid and clear through the whole process and needs a lot of heat before evaporating.
in mother Russia we don't buy, we make.........good info !
How to make gold?

Ahh great got my Kolophonium from Amazon £1.90, 2 day delivery couple weeks ago waiting on this vid, thanks Sorin
R1ch4rd.... can you kindly share the Amazon link of the Kolophonium.....Thanks
The smell brings me back to a 1979 audio shop, for some reason all the speakers and audio equipment smelled like rosin, it is how you knew you were in a audio equipment store of the era.
Exactly the old audio cables and boards were soldered with rosin flux because the modern flux wasn't available back then
Hence everybody got asthma. 😂
top info , no wonder my solider was going like that and the solider had built in flux, just bought the solid rosin 40g 2 quid that brand as well
Fitting in with what was said in this video, rosin is a mixture of abietic, isopamaric, isopamaric and other weak organic acids with a softening point of approx 76C (169F), melting point of 140-176C (284-349F), and b.p. of 425 - 440C (797-824F).
Thanks for your info on this. Have had so much trouble buying a decent RMA flux or a paste & none have worked, even the most expensive. I can’t even buy liquid types now because airlines won’t carry it to my country! Just bout 10 tins of this... to make my own.
This is typical OG repair guys
I didn't really know what rosin was before this.. but now I want to smoke it
great video for beginners in field of electronics! Thanks a lot for advices!
great video.. i have the same feelings for the solder smell and the flux also...
Kalafonia is very popular in Poland... cost about 1 Euro :-) I use that flux to protect corosion prototype PCB - painting them. IS PERFECT
Thanks those you're nonstop to teaching us.. As a techinician l had got more knowledge from you..
I love you
You are like a dad to me. I like how you explain things
Live long ❤️
In Romania, in the old days until now, we use this kind of flax, Kalafonia, called "sacâz" and Sorin, of course, knows this because probably started electronics here. We also had a recipe of various substances, mixed with alcohol that dissolves them to make a good liquid flax, kolofonia was principal substance in this mix
Thank you for explaining your experience with flux. Perfect :D
LOL sacâz. I used this long long time ago with the famous radio progres soldering gun.
Another uses.... a rock of colofonium + piece of string + a thumbtack + a neighbor window = fun
he's been huffin rosin for 20 years 😂 i love it dude!
Superb video very informative and a clear demonstration of this excellent flux, can I ask what brand solder you recommend?
Some people have fume extractors... some people ARE fume extractors.
great tip to make liquid flux! i hope you don't accidentally smoke it in your e-cig! :D
You are great and way you explain is fantastic...
Thank you for sharing your helpful experience.🙏🙏🙏
Thank you very much, now I use your flux, it is cheap, and really efficient. And has a good smell, also.
6:14 LOL 😂😂😂 Why do you need fume extractors? Old School! 👍☑
No......
I am Old School, from the 70s
this was not our credo
Granted that we didn't put too much emphasis in the beginning on fume extractors
but.. WE ALWAYS MADE AN EFFORT TO AVOID THE FUMES.
whether that meant, leaning back a bit
whether that meant , blowing the smoke away while soldering
we always did something
but, did we say.....
ahhhhh breath it in like there's no tomorrow, HAHA NO WE DIDN'T
This is the first video of yours I have watched, nice work and very interesting ... Yeah 👍
Hey! Mr.Sorin, I watched all of your videos and download all. Please upload more sir............................
thanks alot sorin.. now i will use new flux which is ur type of flux, because i trust you..
I trust you Sorin that’s a fantastic idea... thank you again
I love this guy so much
Rosin cored solder has been the favourite of electronic engineers since....the middle of last century.
And it smells nice.
There is a spot on all termopasty fluxes where you can press and it opens the can for you.
On another channel, they said to add a drop of Glycerin to the alcohol/rosin mix to prevent it from burning. I'm going to give it a try.
