  • A very interesting documentary about the early years of that musical monster created in the late 70's, often poorly described as a mix of punk and rockabilly. Although the shooting and the editing is not very dynamic, and you can regret the lack of archives footage, the interview are really well done and make you feel the excitement of these early days of a bunch of kids who wanted to push the boundaries of Rockabilly toward something new. Interviewed witnesses are well chosen too. You have musicians from influential bands that all helped defined the genre in their own way : Nigel Lewis (Meteors), Alan Wilson (Sharks), Steve Whitehouse (Sharks and Frenzy), Chuck Harvey (Frantic Flintstones), Eric and Jeroen Haamer (Batmobile), Mark Harman (Restless), Mark Pennington (Caravans), Humungus (Coffin Nails) and some more.

By definition a rockabilly is a musician from the American south especially from Appalachia who played rock n roll with a heavy honky tonk influence. So outside of that region and if you weren’t a musician you can’t really be rockabilly. Maybe a greaser or a rock n roller, teddy, or hipster if you want to put a label on it. So really psychobilly is a crazy hillbilly rocker there again by definition ya have to be from the south. Which the ultimate Godfather of rockabilly is Johnny Cash from the Sun records years starting in 1955. He invented that sound taking a song that sounded like Hank Williams and adding the slapback tape echo and delay and adding super drippy reverb on fender amps using tele’s, Gretsch, and hollow body Gibsons. Also he used the term psychobilly in “one piece at a time” psychobilly Cadillac. Honestly though when it comes down to it Hank Williams sr. was the first real hillbilly musician to add electric guitars. Also along with Lefty Frizell, and Webb Pierce! So I guess what I’m getting at is how crazy it is that a very specific time, genre, and even one studio(Sun Records) started a phenomenon that became world wide and most people don’t even know the history, where, and how it came about. Even people who have spent their whole lives in the scene like collecting records, going to shows, and reading books and magazines. It’s super wild. Cool little documentary ya got here! Thanks for sharing how it got started in the UK!

A lot of interviews with Nigel Lewis seems to say The Meteors got their style and psychobilly genre name from The Cramps

I mean I generally like them but I also find 'em overrated. They also largely shunned the Psychobilly label in a sense, sadly. And they also performed Garage Rock, regular Punk which is fine and Surf Rock/Neo Surf Rock and the like. I do like four of their tracks from soundtracks & such. Just bigger fans of them then me. I love stuff like The Creepshow, Rocket to the Crypt, Demented Are Go!, The Griswolds and Reverend Horton Heat and others more then them is all. The Cramps imagery and the late/great lead singer (RIP Lux) were fine. Just didn't like every track from 'em is all.

Psychobilly was invented by the Cramps, quite literally. Lux Interior, the lead singer with the Cramps was the first person to use the word "Psychobilly".

Punk with stand up bass? You obviously don't understand Psychobilly's roots. Psychobilly bands and Punk bands are incredibly different... all the way down to music theory.

frank livingston Are you naturally stupid or did you have to practice?
Psychobilly is NOT punk with a doghouse bass. Psychobilly owes more to 50s Rock N'Roll (Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins) than punk. Got the energy and the amps from Punk maybe but you're trying to call an apple an orange.
I wish you all the best and hopefully you'll pass elementary school this time around.
