Yugi vs Strings is higher for me for sure. That duel is brilliant. The positioning Yugi did in that duel, having Buster Blader face off the 4000 ATK Slifer after Nightmare Steelcage wears off, activating Lightforce Sword to be 100 ATK above Slifer, then realizing Revival Jam can still redirect the counterattack, was something else. Yugi gets so defeated, we get defeated, but we sit there hoping he finds a way, because its Yugi and he always does. His brilliance to deck out in a desperate situation was incredible.

It's a shame that Gallop was willing to carry over Dungeon Dice Monsters rather than cutting it entirely, but they weren't willing to do the same for Monster World. Seeing Bakura's RPG recreated in the Gallop style after seeing it in Toei would have been amazing and way better than the Duelist Kingdom substitution we got. It's also important as the forerunner to the Dark RPG at the end of the series.
I remember how hype I was for Yugi vs Pegasus as a kid. My dad taped the finale for me on VHS so I could watch it. It has a lot of season 1 shenanigans but for me it is the quintessential duel of the original series to watch.
Yes, always one of my favorites and I have it taped too. I remember thinking how can Yugi possibly beat the literal creator of the game at his own game. Even today when I rewatch it still gives me chills. The original yugioh series will always be the best ever imo.
Yugi vs Pegasus is still an amazing duel to this day for 2 reasons. The personal stakes for Yugi rather then world ending stakes and the amazing characterization of Pegasus. To me THE best duel in the anime will always be The Final Duel because it's one not of buildup between destined rivals but buildup between two comrades who have fought side by side for so long and now they must prove to each other that they are both ready to move on without them with one of them winning to do so and one of them losing. The duel is more of a test on both sides with each duelist doing their absolute hardest to win pulling absolutely no punches on either side whatsoever with so much symbolism behind each and every card and move Yugi and Atem do throughout that I am still discovering new meaning to each card and move to this day... including the obvious Monster Reborn symbolism pointed out by Tea in the English dub. Nothing will ever top this duel to me in sheer symbolism, emotion, and pure finality that The Final Duel builds up and delivers and despite what this channel says... it will always be my number 1 pick.

Number 76's duel isn't JUST a dream duel. It's a flashback duel. It's a flashback to the tournament he took part in offscreen during episode 2. (Which you wouldn't know if you only watched the dub.) So it's only natural that he would lose to some nobody, because he wasn't all that good yet at that point. (By the show's standards anyway, as he did top.) There's just one problem continuity-wise. While the duel itself was great, the arc overall was a waste. The arc should have been about Joey and Mai. Resolving their relationship, Joey defeating Kaiba and getting the respect he deserves, winning a tournament etc. Instead Joey loses his last duel of the series to a pointless villain and gets called a joke by Kaiba in the 2nd to last episode. 29:04 I loved how this duel showed almost the peak of Yami Yugi duelling prowess (his peak peak was against Yugi which he lost) where he turns it around in duel he was flatly against his back (and he calculated every move on his last row turns).
Dylan, this is one of your Best Vids to date. I agree with you on the ranking of most of the DM duels. Personally, I would put the Atem vs Yugi one in the top spot over Seto vs Yugi R3, but that's only because I have more space in my heart for Yugi over Kaiba's ruthlessness and insanity. Good luck with the GX arc!
I get what you mean with the DVD nostalgia. I had the DVD with the duels between Ghost Kaiba and Yami Bakura (#1) on it, so I got a soft spot for those duels.
Awesome video! Another idea you could do is a top 5 character moments, i.e: Top 5 Yami Yugi Moment, Top 5 Seto Kaiba Moments, etc. It doesn't even have to be in duels
I liked the duel between Mai and Tea, but more for the character development than for the duel itself. Tea standing up for Yugi was a really sweet moment (though her deck would give you straight up cavities) and Mai throwing the duel, playing it off like she couldn't win (despite the fact that she totally could) all for Yugi's sake and to make Tea happy turned her into one of my favourite characters. She didn't coddle him and actually had respect for him as an opponent, and their duel in the semis was even better because it was when Yugi was struggling with Atem, she called him out for hesitating and gave him the confidence he needed to get his head back in the game. Mai was a seriously great character, and it's tragic how poorly she was handled in later seasons, especially during her whole villain arc and how everyone started looking down on her. That felt like it came totally out of nowhere and really disrespected the character growth she had been going through. She managed to make it to the Duelist Kingdom semis and lost to Yugi (the literal King of Games) and then lost to Marik in Battle City because of some plot nonsense that required her to lose. She deserved better.
Just rewatched this video can cant tell you how happy I am you put Kaiba and Yugi at #1. Best duel in my mind in the whole franchise by a substantial margin. Amazing video, love the hard work.
the 4-way duel was a critical duel in setting the stage for the four characters while also demonstrating all their skills in a match that really idn't reward winning as much as it did strategy, which was on full display to the strengths of each duelist! Just my opinion though, but I rewatch that duel a lot.
Bro, so many hot takes on this list. Yugi vs Pegasus VHS edition was so epic. Introduced us to many new concepts, including Yugi countering the Millennium eye!
My #1 will always be Atem and Kaiba vs Dartz. That whole duel was insane and some of the best parts weren't even duel related, just seeing the mind games Dartz would play with the Pharaoh and Kaiba, or when Rafael interrupts and gets his soul stolen. Also, Dartz was written as a cult leader, very charismatic and a way with words. Wayne Grayson did an AMAZING job voicing him and the dialogue the writers gave him. The Orichalcos arc is my favorite though and alot of those duels are in my top 10 like Joey vs Valon, Joey vs Mai (first duel) and Kaiba vs Alister (2nd duel). And of course Joey vs Marik, Yugi vs Kaiba (Duelist Kingdom actually), Yugi vs Pegasus etc. Love Yugioh.
"A month and a half worth of episodes." Actually, I think Kids WB was airing 2 new episodes every Saturday morning during this arc, so Yugi vs Kaiba in Battle City actually lasted 3 weeks in real time.
Wow, that's both crazy and amazing at the same time! I'm now really looking forward to see how you would rank all 133 GX duels, lol. By the way Dylan: Do you plan to make videos about the Yu-Gi-Oh! spinoff mangas? Could be interesting to see duel statistics and other details from other YGO medias.
One thing that I liked about the Johnny Steps duel was that he actually gave up once he knew who Yugi was, because it seemed to me that more people should have respected him like that, but rather it seems like every random duelist thought they could beat him, even if they were a complete nobody.
I thought it was weird that it was only 80 duels, but then I'm reminded that most duels were 2 episode, with some going to at least 3 episodes, not to mention that like the final 25 episodes of the show only had 3 duels in them. GX is massive though. I think Jaden alone had like 85 duels.
4:06 - Third if we count Weevil vs Rex. Fifth if we count Yugi and Tea’s casual duels with Joey. And sixth by counting Solomon vs Kaiba, but you’d have to be a meticulous masochist to go that far.
Yugi vs Kaiba in the battle city finals was by far the best duel. The back and forth both having counters for the other and all the tension because of the stakes for Yugi and the pride of Kaiba to win his own tournament and bury his past, it’s just great.
I Loved this video Dylan & I can imagine how long this took & I agree with a good chunk of your ratings, this might just be me, but I wish they played no matter what during the joey vs yugi round 2 when joey was brainwashed by Marik. I also can't wait for the videos like this for GX, 5D'S, & all the other series
Only 80 duels? Wow I feel like they had way more than that. One thing, for Mai vs Marik, she dominated that match. I've said it before I'll say it again. She only lost because she didn't take ancient Egyptian as an elective🤷🏻♂️
I've always felt there was a criminal lack of duels. Even 80 duels sounds like more than it feels like there are, but then again, those 80 duels include a lot of filler content that hardly count, such as Joey's dream duel, and the mokuba duel.
The duel robot vs Kaiba, wasn’t a mindless duel. It’s all about the context. He literally needed to beat the ultimate dragon and stare down the card that Yugi needed to defeat. He’s fighting his own subconscious.
Personally would say the ceromonial duel is the best just by the weight of the duel itself deciding what happens to Atem when either person wins and how much Yugi has grown as a duelist since the start.
Loved that video and your ranking. I was on the edge of my seat with which duel you picked for #1. 😅 Where do the duels from the Dark Side of Dimensions movie fit in I wonder? 🤔
Idk why but no one seems to know that the duel Joey has “in his dream” wasn’t a dream! It was a memory of his duel from the local tournament he entered before Duelist Kingdom. I always enjoyed the duel and how it followed meta game relevant cards from the first couple of sets
My top ten: 1- Yugi VS Bakura Battle City 2 Yugi VS Kaiba Battle City 3- Yugi VS Strings Battle City 4- Joey VS Marik Battle City 5- Atem VS Yugi Finale 6- Yugi VS Pegasus Duelist Kingdom 7- Kaiba VS Pegasus Duelist Kingdom 8- Yugi VS Raphael (First Time) 9- Joey VS Bandit Keith 10- Kaiba VS Ishizu
Man that's an impressive compilation, you did a great job If I had to at least have a top 5, those would be: 5: Yugi vs Rafael R1 (shocking to see Yugi lose and all the stakes impact him. Rafael is also a very nicely built-up character) 4: Yugi vs Kaiba R3 (really don't like this one as much as everyone else, but still it's a highlight of all the show) 3: Joey vs Marik (despite Marik being cocky, I really enjoy this one) 2: Yugi vs Kaiba R2 (I've always preferred the castle duel as I don't really like the last one that much) 1: Yugi vs Atem (really symbolizes the show wrapping up with how Atem gets outsmarted by Yugi, symbolizing his growth throughout it all)
The Rebecca Vivian duel really shouldn't be that low. This far into Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters they started using more and more card effects that are in line with what certain AI opponents in hard Yugioh video games or tournaments might use. The Joey coma duel could have been several spots below it.
It never ceases to amaze me that the Yami Marik vs Yami Bakura Duel is the only Duel we see Marik win fair and square. The Duels where he Dueled Yugi by controlling Strings and Joey, he lost. And the Duels between Yami Marik and Joey and Mai, he only won because of shenanigans. We all know about the bullshit reason Joey lost. But with Mai, she would have beat Marik if she hadn’t decided to flex and summon Ra. Her Harpie Ladies had enough combined ATK to wipe out Marik and he would not have been able to stop her. And even with summoning Ra, the only reason he won was the bullshit about the summoning chant (which honestly sounds like cheating). Both of the Duels, he should have lost.
Jounouchi lost ti that random kid because it was a flashback of the offscreen regionals that Grandpa trained him for. When he goes to Duelist Kingdom, he mentions that he placed top 8 at regionals.
f around and find out indeed lmfao! One thing technically that isn't the last duel of Kaiba against Bakura if we include the duels he had in the dark side of dimension movie but i get what you mean. i feel like it should go up higher on the list. I think for some of these it's not just the action but everything that goes on around the episode to like the tensions some of these have over others certainly make me have certain duels in different order. I cannot believe that most of the crew besides Honda won against Mai in the anime haha. Kaiba vs Zigfried was such an awesome duel with the insane combos that were being pulled off! Instead of the paradox brothers duel i think i would have to put the first bakura and yugi duel due to how it was a mixed of the monster world arc with everyone's soul being used in the duel/game. That or the very first battle of Yugioh with Kaiba and Yugi haha. Number being the final duel between Yugi and Kaiba is 100 the best one for duel monsters! I can't wait for GX!!!! 🥰
Raphael vs Yugi round 1 is 3rd for me (same top 2 as you). Yugi always has plot armor and never loses a legit match in the show. Not only does he lose with the shocking twist, but he plays the Seal when he didn’t have to. If he just kept the Seal in his hand and lost nothing would have happened. He let his greed for victory cost him. And it sets up a great emotional arc for the rest of the season as innocent yugi took his place and his soul got captured. So Yami had to deal with the guilt of all that.
My favorite one is the 2nd duel between Yugi and Weevil. From a writing standpoint, the protagonist was angry, and wanted to wield his plot armor like a cudgel.

*YGOTAS Kaiba:* It's a good thing I'm Seto Kaiba or that might've actually hurt me.
29:04 I loved how this duel showed almost the peak of Yami Yugi duelling prowess (his peak peak was against Yugi which he lost) where he turns it around in duel he was flatly against his back (and he calculated every move on his last row turns).
Forgot to say: thanks so much for taking the time to do this!
Before I hear his whole list, I'm calling Yugi vs Kaiba in Battle City finals as the best ranked duel.
I didn't know how badly I needed this video until I saw it in my feed. Truly thank you.
if you were to add DSD dueals to this list, where would you put them?
I get what you mean with the DVD nostalgia. I had the DVD with the duels between Ghost Kaiba and Yami Bakura (#1) on it, so I got a soft spot for those duels.
Haven’t watched yet, but yugi vs kaiba in battle city has to be number 1
@ your top 5 sucks then
Awesome video!
I haven't watched the video yet, but... Yugi vs Kaiba (Battle City) gotta be my favorite due to all build up it went into it.
Nice list. You’re a mad lad for ranking all of them. Do GX next
You can't speak facts to the japanime manga weeb like that 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wow, that's both crazy and amazing at the same time! I'm now really looking forward to see how you would rank all 133 GX duels, lol. By the way Dylan: Do you plan to make videos about the Yu-Gi-Oh! spinoff mangas? Could be interesting to see duel statistics and other details from other YGO medias.
100 of those duels is just Jaden 😂
Putting Kaiba vs Ishizu as high as you did is based
One thing that I liked about the Johnny Steps duel was that he actually gave up once he knew who Yugi was, because it seemed to me that more people should have respected him like that, but rather it seems like every random duelist thought they could beat him, even if they were a complete nobody.
Yeah agreed. On top of that I also thought it was a breath of fresh air seeing an "average" duelist who was making all sorts of errors in the match.
No one steps on Johnny Steps!
Johnny steps duel was kinda funny because how did 2 woman spell casters fuse into a 90s rockstar 😭🙏
What's a rockstar without groupies?
I thought it was weird that it was only 80 duels, but then I'm reminded that most duels were 2 episode, with some going to at least 3 episodes, not to mention that like the final 25 episodes of the show only had 3 duels in them.
GX is massive though. I think Jaden alone had like 85 duels.
4:06 - Third if we count Weevil vs Rex. Fifth if we count Yugi and Tea’s casual duels with Joey. And sixth by counting Solomon vs Kaiba, but you’d have to be a meticulous masochist to go that far.
Vivian vs Rebecca is perhaps one of my absolute favourites due to the trash talking. Plus an actual meta deck being used is just👌
How are there only 80 duels. I swear there were hundreds.
Marik face at the end seeing Joey still standing is so priceless.
Yugi vs Kaiba in the battle city finals was by far the best duel. The back and forth both having counters for the other and all the tension because of the stakes for Yugi and the pride of Kaiba to win his own tournament and bury his past, it’s just great.
Can tell you put alot of time into this video between the editing and script writing/opinions for every duel. Glad its climbing in vuews
It’s crazy that it’s been 20 years since the Battle City Semi Finals and Final duel premiered on Kids WB!
I remember being so excited to see Kaiba vs Bakura but then getting so pissed when it randomly ended
Let's play a little Yugioh Trivia. Who's In?
Question 1: How many times Yugi/Yami Yugi uses _Mind Crush_ in the anime?
A: 4
B: 3
C: 5
D: 0
Vivian vs Rebecca will always be memorable for me because it’s the only time I can recall that chain links are directly addressed
The duel robot vs Kaiba, wasn’t a mindless duel. It’s all about the context. He literally needed to beat the ultimate dragon and stare down the card that Yugi needed to defeat. He’s fighting his own subconscious.
I still go back and watch the Yugi Kaiba Battle City duel at least once a year. It is so good start to finish. Definately #1 in my books
Man I was watching this video like where is my favorite at? Only for it to be number 7! Loved this list in the end.
I’d love a part 2 ranking the Season Zero duels and the duels from all 4 of the movies.
The older day yugioh was so much more simple just normal and fusion summons that's it
Personally would say the ceromonial duel is the best just by the weight of the duel itself deciding what happens to Atem when either person wins and how much Yugi has grown as a duelist since the start.
My top ten:
1- Yugi VS Bakura Battle City
2 Yugi VS Kaiba Battle City
3- Yugi VS Strings Battle City
4- Joey VS Marik Battle City
5- Atem VS Yugi Finale
6- Yugi VS Pegasus Duelist Kingdom
7- Kaiba VS Pegasus Duelist Kingdom
8- Yugi VS Raphael (First Time)
9- Joey VS Bandit Keith
10- Kaiba VS Ishizu
Honorable Mentions:
Yugi VS Arkana
Yugi/Kaiba VS Dartz
Kaiba VS Gozzoboro
Yugi VS Kaiba Duelist Kingdom
Man that's an impressive compilation, you did a great job
If I had to at least have a top 5, those would be:
5: Yugi vs Rafael R1 (shocking to see Yugi lose and all the stakes impact him. Rafael is also a very nicely built-up character)
4: Yugi vs Kaiba R3 (really don't like this one as much as everyone else, but still it's a highlight of all the show)
3: Joey vs Marik (despite Marik being cocky, I really enjoy this one)
2: Yugi vs Kaiba R2 (I've always preferred the castle duel as I don't really like the last one that much)
1: Yugi vs Atem (really symbolizes the show wrapping up with how Atem gets outsmarted by Yugi, symbolizing his growth throughout it all)
Ooohh this is gonna be good. Been rewatching DM and going through it subbed so this will keep the hype train rolling
I've waited a long time for someone to make this video. Thank you!
"Realize that not all duels are worth winning" man.. If only that was a lesson he kept lol
I love a good list. Impressive.
Odion shoulda beat Joey
Mai shoulda beat Marik
Joey should have beat Marik even tho he shouldn’t have been there in the first place.
"Tea vs Mai, another forgettable duel. We all remember this one"
ooookay :D
Jounouchi lost ti that random kid because it was a flashback of the offscreen regionals that Grandpa trained him for. When he goes to Duelist Kingdom, he mentions that he placed top 8 at regionals.
Can’t wait to see every series battles like this
Kaiba: Well done, Mokuba! Now steal something from Wheeler!
f around and find out indeed lmfao! 🥰
My favourite duel in the entire serie is bakura Vs yugi in duel city it was such a unique duel and the ending was amazing
That’s some dedication
Some what?! 😂
You did it you really did it and it was really fun to watch! i would love to do my top 80 duels. I think Marik vs Yugi and Yugi vs kaiba are the bests
This is not a video I'd ever attempt, hats off.
I look forward to you doing the GX version hopefully sometime next year! This video was amazing!
My 5 favorite Duels in the franchise are:
1.Jonouchi vs Marik
2.Yugi vs Atem
3.Ryo vs Yubel
4.Atem Vs Kaiba-Battle City Finals
5.Judai vs Barron
This the kind of effort I subscribed for!
