The larger Pokemon-fandom always hates the newest games, most change their opinion 1 or 2 gens later. In Gen 5s case, it was in part because it was a soft "reboot" that only gave you the option to catch new Pokemon during the main story. Another reason was because people thought most of these new Pokemon weren't "creative" because a lot of them clearly were at least somewhat inspired by past Pokemon, quite a few of them because they were supposed to fill roles other Pokemon did in the past, and others just didn't like the artstyle. I remember there was also a lot of criticism that the map was "too linear" compared to past games.

Black and White is the best we got in terms of the amount of content, love, and care the devs put in and even in terms of plot (which isn't groundbreaking but for POKÉMON it kinda was) Edit: yes, this applies to B2W2 as well

Base pokemon bw challenge mode is easier specially if you follow level caps on that game, if you could get a drillbur, you could have a freaking excadrill before Elisa but in normal mode bw playthrough you cant

As a person who also played white and chose Oshawott, I felt happy watching this. Welcome to the pokemon rabbit hole Michi, the Unova series is a interesting spot for me too. It was the first pokemon game I Managed to beat(my first was pearl and Cynthia scarred me).
For me personally I think Gen 5 was just alright. As a kid I played a lot of Gen 1-3 but by the time Gen 4 came out I had reached that point in my life when I thought I was too old for Pokemon so I skipped that one. When I got back into Pokemon, Gen 5 was out and it was my reintroduction to the franchise. Looking back I don’t think I have any strong feelings about that game compared to the others that I played like heartgold and sapphire but I had fun, enjoyed some of the new Pokemon in it, and was happy to be back playing these games again. I will say this though, personally I feel like Gen 5 has my least favorite starters in all 9 of generations so far.

The games were the best that the license gave us before becoming pure Scams (Gen 8 and Gen 9 are unforgivable) no matter how good you can find one points of the games you have to admit one major Fact : the games were rushed, so rushed that they fall in the Sonic 06 tier( I respect this game but it was an unfinished project).
