Question, Gibson related: do you know when Gibson, during the 90s, stopped using Brazilian rosewood and started using Indian rosewood, on say the studio models?
Fender forgot to chew up the fretboard, put finish blemishes everywhere, leaving polish compound in the joints, crack the neck pocket, weaken the headstock and figure out the Gibson trademark secret of poor tuning stability. They also forgot to over price it by $1k
The poor tuning stability you speak of comes from the sharp angle on the head stock and the way the strings divide at the headstock. I think it was designed before you bent a lot and when everybody had a wound g

Well, it finally happened. One of Trogly’s videos caused me to buy a guitar that I didn’t even know existed! A Tele/Les Paul mashup is my dream combo so I had to get one. I love my Troublemaker!!
This was my favorite from the parallel universe line. I'd like to see them double down on this and make it a semi-permanent thing. I bet a lot of people would buy a cheaper MIM version.
I was always confused why fender sells wide range hum buckers today as wide range even though they aren’t really wide range, they aren’t the CuNiFe magnets anymore they are just wax coated AlNiCo, it’s just really frustrating to me and now you can get the CuNiFe ones from the custom shop which is nice, but I just wish they didn’t just put a regular hum bucker underneath a wide range plate and call it a wide range hum bucker
I think these are standard humbucker-size Shawbuckers, not the larger Wide Range HB's. In any case, Fender is now making real CuNiFe WRHB pickups with the original construction, only for a couple of guitars so far. It was just announced at the NAMM show. They finally were able to source the correct magnets, which they will also be the distributor for.
Last time I looked CuNiFe loaded replica pickups were $500 each, the originals were made for Fender by Lace (although designed by Seth Lover), and they came up with the sensor as CuNiFe magnets were getting hard to source.
Hey Trogly, was just wondering if you could make a video where you go through the cleaning and fixing up process when you get an electric guitar in. It'd be interesting to know everything you use and what you do to get a guitar into the excellent condition they end up in. Thanks!
See 'Dave's World of Fun Stuff' … He has a whole series on repairing and fixing up guitars … You can learn everything you need to know there. (Note, the Older Vids will tell you a lot of the details that he skips over to save repetition in the later one's …).
There are far better channels dedicated to that task than Trogly here... He uses wire-wool to clean his fretboards, something no self-respecting lutheir would ever countenance. All those shards of rust-gathering steel strands stuck under the frets... Not forgetting the dust, or miniscule scratches everywhere. . Troglly is cool for 'general information' mostly about Les Pauls', though he does have a good wealth of knowledge on most of the top brands. And is very good at spotting scams and fakes. But when it comes to guitar maintenance/repair, look elsewhere.
Great video. It made me really want one. As a guy who loves the way Les Paul's look but can't get used ti the scale, I am really glad they stuck with the Fender math (scale/radius).
I love these guitars. I think more companies should do this instead of just trying to copy one to one. And fender stays true to their roots with this one.
You are actually somewhat incorrect about the poker chip. It does not come installed on the guitar. Much like how the mirrors don't come installed on the Jimmy Page tele. It also only came with the iced tea burst one. It was not included with the ice blue one.
krose2506 - I acquired the ice blue metallic troublemaker from Wildwood guitars the day they received it from Fender. It came with the pocker chip as part of the case candy but was not installed on the guitar.
@@thehighadvisor5731 Nice to meet another troublemaker owner. I thought they were going with a different vibe with the ice blue one because of the different stained back. Why I chose the iced tea finish over it.
These are quite an upgrade from what I remember as the Telecaster Deluxe. I'm glad you demonstrated the differences in this video. But, this is a good faith effort by Fender to put loyal Gibson users in a "comfort" zone. I think that's why you, and other Gibson aficionados like it so much. Nice job on this. Great demo tunes as well. Love it.
I am a Fender guy thru and thru and I absolutely love these Telecasters they look and play so good I would take one over just about any Gibson except for a really nice Gold Top
Hey Austin. Love the RUclips family collaboration lately. You've more than earned your place this last couple of months. Well... I always watch anyhow but it's gotta be said brother. Good on ya. Samick made Epiphones will have the 3 adjustment humbuckers. My 1993 g310b had those on the batwing pickguard. Actually.. An SG pickguard would have been sick on this
I they did have a carved top Tele the “Special Edition FMT”... it was odd as it came with black chrome hardware (not the same as black) and it did have two humbuckers, but only master volume and tone with a switch... more like a PRS style as the knobs were slightly inset into the top. The Black Cherry Burst was a cool color.
Thank you for including the both pickups on setting in the tone demo. It’s annoying as hell when players only go back and forth between the bridge and neck and pretend the option of using both doesn’t even exist. It’s even more annoying when they do that when demo-ing a guitar with two volume and two tone nobs, ignoring the tones that can be created by adjusting those when both pickups are on.
I really like the Fender Toronado as a Gibson-y Fender. You get the 2 humbuckers, 2 volumes, 2 tones, & 24.75 inch scale but with the bolt-on neck & Fender headstock. For me, that’s pretty close to a “best of both worlds” design.
I don't usually comment on your content as you are really busy, but your comments have inspired me to to make one I've a 69 tele to build next as it's my birth year, but I have the design in my head now, thanks. 👍
To put that large headstock in perspective with the times just watch a few old Partridge Family reruns. Wide ties and extremely large shirt and jacket collars were the norm. Elvis's costumes of the same period also sported the huge oversized collars to go with his 70's period long and wide side burns. Eyeglasses from the 70's were also oversized frames. Elvis, Elton John and John Denver all wore big 70's style eye wear. Perfectly in tune with the large wide headstock's of the day.
The only tele I would want definitely has to have the big headstock. To me the little ones look like a limp dick. The bigger ones give the guitar a more balanced look.
also seems to incorporate some elements of the 80s Elite Telecasters, especially that style pickguard and electronics lay out (different pickups though)
Based on looks alone, I wouldn’t be the least bit interested but the tones you got out of that thing were just delicious. It retains some of the sparkly, chiming sound typical of Fenders but with greater warmth and thickness especially in the midrange. I think the combination sounds absolutely gorgeous and would be very gratifying to play.
I have an all Warmouth Tele, gorgeous figured maple cap over mahogany body, with SD Tele Antiquities. The LP style body in Tele format adds a certain versatility and richness, plus killer sustain.
Well, the woods definitely change the sound, yet still the bell like tone, yet slightly darker, SOUNDS GREAT. Seems like a jaguar sound ? Strange, no resemblance ? Right.
I’m happy to say I own an original 73 Tele Deluxe in Mocha finish and have had it almost since new. I like this new version but when I want to see a flame top I take out my 59 Ri Les Paul. These two guitars are totally different. BTW the original Seth Lover Humbuckers sound much better than these new pups IMO. 😎🎶 Love my Fender but my Gibson is a true piece of art and superb function.
I'm mostly a Gibson guy, but I'm glad that Fender kept this closer to being a Fender than a Gibson. Besides, if it was a set neck, that probably would've added to the production cost and MSRP, and they may have wanted to keep this at a certain price-point.
The Tele FMT HH is pretty similar too, minus the tailpiece, the fact that it comes with Seymour Duncan humbuckers, and that it’s made in Korea. Mahogany body with a real flame maple cap and a mahogany set neck with rosewood board. It’s also got some cool beveling on the face of the guitar rather than the traditionally flat slab body. Easily one of my favorite guitars that I own.
This is beautiful but honestly still sounds like a Fender. I would never buy a Fender wanting a Gibson tone but i'm sure there are people who love Les Paul and SG tones but love Fenders shapes. I don't think this quite ticks the small markets boxes. Never the less, I love this thing.
This is one of the most gorgeous looking guitars I've ever seen, damn. And I much prefer the fretboards and scale lengths of fenders to Gibsons as I learnt the guitar on a fender strat, so it'd have the playability of that with the sound and look of a les Paul.
I agree but I'm a Tele fanboy so I think they all look good. My favorite Tele is a 2018 Parallel Universe Thinline Tele Super Deluxe. Those inlays and binding on the neck plus that sparkly pickguard make it beautiful in my opinion. Some people hate it but it's on my dream list.
The white knobs make it look like something from a 60's Sears catalog. I didn't like them on my 66 Strat back then and switched to Tele knobs. Still have the Strat and put the stock ones back on to keep collectable.
I love this thing; how cool. Thanks to the guy who supplied it and to you for showing it to us. That scratch plate has got to go, lol. And speed knobs would be an upgrade.
Wow, this is such a beautiful guitar and a such a great idea for a custom guitar. It would be interesting to also see a Fender SG-Jaguar... ...Or a Gibson Jaguar-SG... :-)
People didn't know what to make of these in the 70s and they've been mostly ignored since, but since about 2005 people are starting to figure them out. I have 20 guitars some in the five digits and my '75 Tele Deluxe is probably my favorite. I love the sound and feel, not so much the looks, and wish I could put this pickguard on the one I already have.
I have a Squier Tele made in the 90s. Mahogany body and set mahogany neck, on a 24 3/4 scale. It's a beautiful and great sounding guitar. Never compared it to a Les Paul though.
i love it! Great review. IMHO, it would look even sexier without that scratch plate & different knobs. I'm a bit of a trouble-maker myself, so I dig it.
Just watched a vid explaining how the newer wide range pups are nothing like the originals. That would probably sound better with Gibson pickups in it.
Uh oh! Trogly coming in with the Tool! Speaking of I'm hoping to live vicariously through you when the Adam Jones signature comes out. That is assuming that you want to have that amazing silverburst ;)
the oblong back cover pays homage to the telecaster switch and knob plate from the front which was lost by the install of the gibson style front layout
I think the FMT tele is a somewhat better mashup between the two since it has the set neck construction, mahogany body and neck, maple cap, and humbuckers. It's missing the dual volume and tone knobs as well as the selector up top that this one has. It is an import though, originally made in Korea and now in Indonesia, I think. Top it off with the Seymour Duncans Pearly Gates and 59 that it comes with and, I think, it adds up to quite a bargain. Nice vid.
The gigantic pick guard on the Tele Deluxe, totally ruins it for me. I’ve never understood that design decision. This thing, on the other hand, is awesome! Very cool, I love it.
I have one of the Korean-made Celtic Esquires from the early 2000s. It has a set neck and carved top, single h/b 1 volume. Maybe mahogany body and neck? Not sure, but it's a lot like a LP Jr.

Top it off with the Seymour Duncans Pearly Gates and 59 that it comes with and, I think, it adds up to quite a bargain. Nice vid.
Fantastic tone !!
My Squier Fat Tele is the same way but w 2 HBs and string through w Tele hs
I like it the Tele versatility added to the lineup
I freaking love that thing.
Fender class act. They respected and will be in return.
It would have been nice to see the block inlays on the fretboard. Maybe they'll add something in the future
