In Nov 1959, moved from the lower east side Alfred E. Smith projects to the newly open Castle Hill Projects. My sister and I were the first Black American children to attend PS 138. We lived at 2120 Randall Ave. apt 12F. Most of the surrounding land was open with single family dwellings. The only crossover was when Castle Hill Ave went over the Cross Bronx Expressway, there was no overpass on the Brunker Blvd. Pass the projects was the Castle Hill Beach Club near the end of the projects on the right. Folks back then the whole Castle Hill area was all white. So you can guess how things were then. One of the first black families we met were the Young family. I grew up with their son both of us 11 years old, Wilbur Young who played professional football for San Deigo, Kansas City and Washington. I went in the service and made a career in it.
Hey thanks for the support, I just started this channel, I'm glad it's getting the reaction it's giving you and others, let me know if u want me to film a certain area to bring back some more memories 👍
Thank You for this! Great to see from a biker point of view at real street level like this. I lived in the Castle Hill Houses on Randall Avenue From 1964 to 1972. Ages 5 to 13, walked this in my youth many times.
@@mindyourcity8949 Looking forward! I left in 1966 and sadly, everything I knew other than the firehouses are gone. We had a favorite ice cream parlor, Glutz, on the SE corner of Castle Hill and Newbold. There was a bar, featured in "The Pope Of Greenwich Village" at the subway exit on the SW corner of Castle Hill and Westchester which I'm told was fun in its' day.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing!!! I was raised in Castle Hill first on Lacombe then we move down to Turnbull. Great memories! It's great to see the changes as well as what stayed since I left. Living in Orlando now but the Bronx and Castle Hill will always be home 🥰🥰🥰
What a great video. So many places have changed. The end of the video is where I spent my Summers at Castle Hill pool and my kids went to the YMCA on Castle Hill before it moved to the end of Castle Hill. I see Mr. Softer is already out and the last house I lived in was on Manning St. I loved watching this video it brought back some good memories I felt I was home again. Thanks so much. I really enjoyed it.
thanks for doing this. I grew up on chatterton and castle hill, and my grandmother lived on Turnbull. In the 1950s,60s Bruckner Blvd was not beneath Castle HIll. Hank
I grew up on Quimby Avenue, the block right before Story Avenue. You biked right by Holy Family School, a Catholic grammar school and J-Lo's school. The mother of a high school friend of mine babysat J-Lo! Kerry Washington grew up around there too. When I was a kid, in warm weather I'd like to walk all the way down to the end of Castle Hill and sit on the grimy little beach there, watching the planes fly in and out of LaGuardia Airport across the way. From what I can see from your tour, Castle HIll Avenue has not changed much at all. Of course, the storefronts are different but otherwise most of the buildings are still there.
Víctor Rodríguez , I lived on Olmstead Ave from 1962 to 1971 right across the castle hill beach club there was a Big pool not so many houses . Great Nieghborhood back then. Went to James Monroe H.S. Clases of 1966
I planted 5,000 flowers this fall all over castlehill so if you want to bike through here and see some beautiful flowers I'd highly suggest it this spring ❤️🙏🏾
My grandfather used to live in a brick 2 story apt bldg around castle hill ave and bruckner blvd. There as a place called Joe & Joe's at the corner. Does anyone know where I can find a video of that area?
Yeah I remember Joe & joes, La Dora Italian Ices, The White castle that was Caddy Corner of Bruckner Blvd. from Joe & Joes. Grew up on Homer ave went to PS 36. Heck my Mom went to PS 36 yup that school has been there a long time.
No the school with the playground on the right side is 127s playground. The first school in the video is a private school I believe and its playground was on the metropolitan ave if I remember correctly. But the huge playground belongs to 127
All of these driving/biking videos have the same problem : What's in the frame? What's in the frame is 70% blacktop and cars plus sky. The buildings are shot from an angle from 30 yards away, so no details are visible. The walking videos are a little better, for being shot from nearer to the buildings. It might be better if the camera were aimed at a right angle to the direction of travel. You'd lose one side of the street, but you wouldn't waste most of the frame on blank spaces. Also, there's a "t" in "left." Castle Hill is named for a large communal structure, inhabited by local Amerindians in the pre-European settlement era. Last I heard/read there was a Surinamese community there, with Bengalis nearer to Westchester Square.
