I love how you started them! I will do that next year. This year was my first attempt, started them from seed outdoors too late and only got 3 sprouts that never bloomed due to so much rain. Where I live the ground usually isn't workable in May so I will try your method next time! Thanks

You may want to try winter sowing in jugs/containers. Trying it this year for the first time and so far my seedlings have been doing great.

how long does the privacy fence last? and are they bianual? do u just leave them in for years or do you have to regrow each year? thank you :)

If you leave them, the seeds drop at the end of the season and will regrow next year

They are an annual. So they do not regrow from the same root system the following year. If they seed, and the critters don’t eat the seeds, the ones that drop will sprout the following year. You will still have the stocks and some leaves standing if you do not chop them. In my experience at least.

What happens in winter, do you still have privacy with the plant?

Just the Sunflower inspiration I was looking for my fence line! Thank you! Now I just need to find a way to keep stink bugs and squash bugs from completely decimating them this year...... last year was a sad slow death for all my varieties.. any suggestions would be appreciated. xo

I'm so glad you find use in this design!! We get a lot of Japanese beetles and earwigs in our area that have been an issue in the past. I bought Safer's 3 in 1 garden spray and would spray them when I noticed issues, that seemed to help! I also would spray with Dawn dish soap and water!

Great video! This is my first year doing a lot of sunflowers, but it seems the birds and animal love to snack on them 😢… what should I do to protect them once outside? New subscriber ❤

great idea and something cool to do every year - especially for the variety flowers. Less work plant Heliopsis helianthoides.. I think I will try it at the back of my property for the birds.

Do you think it is going to deter the squirrels? We haven’t grown any sunflower in last two years . The squirrels would come when the plants were really at their best and decapitate all of them. It was discouraging and infuriating. I might give it a try again if you think soap will work in keeping them away

That's a bummer, we get a lot of deer in our area but I think the dogs have helped to keep them out of our yard. I'll see how things go this year!
