With Joan you get a double feature. Not only do you great music but also a great philosophy lesson!

Some of these rats are so invasive and intrusive they broke into my safety deposit box in the Bank Vault at Wells Fargo Bank in Hamilton and stole my baby pictures my folks had made of me in Adrian Michigan by Olin Mills Studio. I believe that's the worst theft so far but how could you top that!

The first time I heard Joan Baez was when she released The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. She has been my favorite song bird since then. I think she is even more beautiful now than when she was 18!

I grew up in this society ... I have more than eighty years in my life ... But , if I never knew it , I absolutely know , and I knew it so many years before .... That the Arts ... the songs , the lyrics .... is the Univeral Language !!!

Music is truly a universal language. Goes far beyond national, racial, ethnic boundaries to speak to the soul. I say this both as a music listener and performer.

Little more than 5 mounths before The Velvet revolution (in czechoslovakia), she came to sing to us about courage, persistence and real value of humanity.. Thank you Jaon to support us not only in that days. God bless you.

I first saw Joan -- the first time I ever heard of her-- was about 1961 in Carnegie Hall. I was in high school in Brooklyn and one day everybody was saying, come with us! We are all going to hear Joan Baez sing folk music. I didn't know what that was. Admission was $2. I was always put off by her preachy politics, but overcame that eventually because of that voice. How she was blessed with that voice and and eventually got away from being a peace preacher, and when she sang the world fell under her spell. Only in America can we have a female force like Joan Baez from Staten Island.

translation of czech speech: "I wanna give this song to CHARTA 77, Independent peace movement and to Petr Cibulka. I welcome friends of Charta, inclusive Vaclav Havel and friends." Cibulka was in prison in the very moment, Charta and Havel arch enemies of the communistic regime, ruling the country at that time. This was in Bratislava, if I remember well. Havel served to Joan as "guitar carrier" in order to somehow manage to talk to her. Brave Lady

Interesting. Many people accuse Joan of being a Communist or Communist sympathizer, but couldn't be further from the truth. She comes from Quaker and Jewish roots, and the teaching of both honor and protect human freedom and dignity. From what I've seen and heard from her, she will speak out against injustice and war no matter whose government is guilty of it. True peacemaker.

    • @z87OFFICIAL

@@wb7ptr Thanks to this "accusing" of her she could perform at the festival. The management of the festival appointed by the communists thought that she will be friendly with the regime when she criticize U.S. but they were, fortuntly, far far from the truth.

Thank you for posting this gem. She sounds great even we feel her voice was already changng. Is there anyone who can translate what the singer Ivan sang and explain us why and who did cut off the sound? Thank you.

    • @romanfranta2934
      @romanfranta2934 Год назад +3

The organizers of this festival cut off the sound. To be clear, this was still before the collapse of the totalitarian communist regime in Czechoslovakia. Joan Baez was allowed to be invited probably because the officials thought they would show there was freedom in Czechoslovakia if they let her have a concert. They were probably even naively thinking she would just sing anti-US protest songs which was of course welcome. But they didn't expect this would happen, at first she gave a support speech for dissidents in Czechoslovakia and then invited Ivan Hoffman to play a protest song. This was unexpected, the song was more or less unknown for the audience and after a few words the officials told the soundman to cut it off. He pretended not to understand to let it go at least for a while but finally after some time they managed to mute it.
I'm lazy to do a proper translation so I used google translate for the lyrics:
Don't let them tell me that I should speak out loud,
Those who were silently breaking teeth yesterday,
Let them not pretend that they already have a clear understanding of this,
Those who with great fame and at my expense discovered a may-bug.
Don't let me be fooled, that today the truth will be revealed,
It has lived here with us since the creation of the world,
Don't let them advise me, what I know even from my own head,
Those who only yesterday were hostile to the truth,
      Today and every day.
Let them not think that they will allow my heart,
Those who cruelly nailed love to the wood,
Let them not raise their thumbs brazenly to the sky...
