  • What is one of the most overlooked yet extremely important parts of an overlanding vehicle build when it comes to safety and performance? The brakes. Find out exactly why and what a braking system upgrade looks like when we install a set of Dakar-proven Power Brakes in our Tacoma, Atigun. Shop wisdom from our mechanical magician, Tanner, and a hard-stop brake test performed by the young bloods of the X Overland team are all a part of this episode of Shop Talk! #tacomabuild #shoptalk #xoverland

    When I bought my 2003 tahoe, the first mod I did was brakes. Went with PowerStop. Haven't had an issue yet, 15k miles later and the pads are still nice and fast despite mud, sand, rock crawling, and thousands of stops ams gos in traffic. The calipers had recently been replaced when I got the truck so I didn't order those, but will order those and longer brake lines when I get my next set.

    Secondly, do you ever get nervous putting these higher end parts on a world traveling rig? Does it make you nervous to have a catastrophic failure of an upgraded part in a country that has no support for those parts?

    Quick question do they remove the dust shield on your Tacoma? If so, do they have any issues especially fitting on the caliper because the instruction says not to remove instead trim it all the way to the hub?

    Everyone should know that putting bigger brakes won’t make your car stop any faster. If you can brake hard enough to lock up your tires or have the abs kick in, bigger brakes won’t do any better. Bigger brakes are usually for being able to break over and over again and not get fade.
    Now bigger brakes will help if you are heavy and loaded. But I bet most peoples factory brakes are good enough.

    • @rattlecanpaint
      @rattlecanpaint 2 года назад

      You absolutely stop faster, but more importantly you stop in less distance. (Time vs distance) And you can do it over and over again before you get to brake fade. And EVERYONE can benefit from better brakes. Both the driver and the pedestrian or other driver. Even the deer and squirrels benefit.

    • @pahaf1991
      @pahaf1991 2 года назад

      @@rattlecanpaint we’ll how can the truck stop any faster if you already locking up your brakes, or you are activating the abs? It will be the same with big brakes or stock brakes. You are on the limit of your tires. The tires can’t stop any faster no matter what brakes you have. If you want to stop faster, you will have to get sticker tires.

      One guy that mostly gets it. TBH I almost didn't watch this video because most "overlanders" or people with expedition rigs don't know much about all the engineering that goes into developing proper brakes. That's not to knock on the XO team, I just don't think this is where their experience lie. They said exactly what I expected.
      If a company only designs a front brake kit, it is designed to do one thing, delay or even prevent heat soak all together, for consistent braking. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. In motorsports it makes a huge difference after a couple laps on the track. On expedition rigs it will make a huge difference on those mountain passes where you may need to use brakes more often. You might get less flex from a larger more rigid caliper but this is a rather small-moderate, and secondary benefit. What happens when, as the video states, increased braking power by 2x... Well increasing the front brake rotor torque by 2x just fucked up your brake bias, and poor brake bias is one of the main reasons tires lock up. Because the limits of your tires can't handle the force of the brakes on that axle trying to stop the weight of the vehicle. This is greatly affected by tire load. A front big brake kit will NOT stop you significantly shorter in like for like situations.
      Dynamic weight distribution under braking, most noticeable in emergency stops, means weight can unload on one axle, reducing contact pressure on the tires to the ground, therefore losing grip... Too often people think that when they "lock up the tires" they're getting significant improvement in brake performance, when in reality it's is very much the opposite. How do you stop when your tires break traction? Best brake performance comes right at the limit of tire's traction at ALL corners. To achieve this you need to engineer a front AND rear brake kit taking into account a vehicle's weight, center of gravity, static weight distribution, and dynamic weight distribution under various levels of braking.

      ruclips.net/video/Yv31dQ1RYHk/видео.html here's a real world test of a big brake kit. Not the particular kit in this video but a different brand. He averages 4 runs from 60 mph. 174 feet average on stock brakes vs 141 feet with the big brake kit. The average vehicle in America is between 12 and 17 feet long. That's 2 car lengths sooner stopping distance. In a panic situation that's the difference between hitting that car you're following too closely while reading your mad magazine working on your laptop and texting your girlfriend pics of last night's dinner and not. Or the difference in hitting that moose that ran out in front of you and not. (You DO NOT want to hit a moose.) The thing with the bigger brakes is that you get to that point of maximum adhesion on the tires sooner (milliseconds sooner but that's the difference.) At 60 mph you are traveling 88 feet per second. So the kit in the above video gets to maximum adhesion a little less than a half a second faster. (Not counting all the other physics and calculations with additional speed that had been scrubbed initially and all that jazz.) It truly only takes 1 emergency stop with a big brake kit to pay for itself.

      The pads are an off the shelf part so can be purchased from any parts warehouse. This was done for precisely your point. The company is South African so you can get the pads literaly anywhere in the world. Which is believe it or not easier to get than Tacoma parts, being that the rest of the world (minus the US and Canada) doesn't get the Tacoma. Other than that, how often does a caliper sieze up? Rotors can be turned anywhere. The upgrade in stopping power this kit provides is worth every penny. You can have all the go you want but if you don't have stop, well then the last stop is a doozy. Brake upgrades are absolutely the best money you can spend. All it takes is one emergency stop where you stopped 12 feet shorter and didn't hit that musk ox, or other car, or person, and any headache getting parts or extra cost become worth it.
