A spectacular documentary on the history of lighthouses, filmed on location in France, Great Britain, Canada and the United States. The golden age of the lighthouse is over.
Most lighthouses have been already automated or are scheduled to be automated sometime over the next few years. The golden age of the lighthouse dates from the 19th century. The expansion of trade, the birth of colonial empires, and the transportation of millions of immigrants all called for a better system of identifying coastlines.
The lighthouses, solitary and beautiful, will survive, but lighthouse keepers are another matter. Victims of the electronic age, they are no longer needed when the lighthouse can so easily be maintained by automation in the modern era of technology.
The documentary was filmed at the lighthouses of Ar-Men, Cordouan, Kereon, and Le Creach in France; Bonavista, Cape Race, Sable Island, and Pointe Amour in Canada; Bell Rock and Longstone in Great Britain; and, in the United States, Boston, Portland, Maine, and the Statue of Liberty, in New York City.

I have had the privilege of being in the USCG, a Keeper at Boston Light and the Nantucket Lightship WLV 612. I never thought of it as privilege until much later on in life.

Lighthouses have always been a huge fascination of mine. Such marvels of engineering and optics from their creators, and such commitment to courage and unfaltering selflessness from the keepers and their families. This was a beautiful documentary.

I agree. I also share a fascination with lighthouses. If you have ever been out at sea late at night, a lighthouse can make the feeling of loneliness disappear. A beacon of humanity, saying "You are not alone out here."

Much respect to the architects who designed these magnificant lighthouses. Building them must have been a huge challeneg as well for the builders. It's sad to see many lighthouses seen as obsulete by many people who embrace technology.

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !"
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea !"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"

Interesting video. Winstanley's christian name was Henry. The wrecks pictured between 17.42 and 17.49 are actually Cornish: 'Glenbervie', Lowland Point, 1901 and 'Mildred', Gurnards Head 1912. All British lighthouses are now automated, the Longstone in 1990 and Bell Rock in 1998.

I thought lighthouses as we know them today started in Ireland by the monks lighting fires on cliff tops. The oldest one in Europe is supposed to be in Ireland according to a recent R.T.E documentary.

I guess they are talking about the building as the concept we know today. As opposed to simply signalling boats through light

I’m pretty sure the opening ruins are not the lighthouse of Alexandria. That’s just enough to be too deep to walk in and is certainly too murky. The footage looks to be of Cleopatra’s pool across the water from Alexandria, Egypt in Turkey.

Maybe we should un automate these lighthouses? That would be a great documentary series actually you got three random people off the Internet put them in an old historic lighthouse that has been un automated with a bunch of freeze dried food maybe Mountainhouse would sponsor you lock the door there’s no Internet just a camera guy and if anybody makes it a full year commission they get like $100,000!

It’s so sad that the powers that be have decided to turn the lighthouse’s automatic. They should be sacred and held to the ways they were meant to be. These buildings shouldn’t be empty & rotting away. They’re a treasure.

    THE LAST LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER
We watched through the night, our beacon bright
For ships in peril upon the sea
Like all the watchmen of old, the story is told
    Of my lighthouse and me
For hundreds of years we calmed their fears
With a single ray of light
Sailors new and old and brave and bold
    Found solace in the night
Now the old way is gone and we march along
    The last keeper has retired
Electronic gear is the new thing, I hear
To keep your ship from the mire
The light will stay on from dusk to dawn
And the beacon will be large
But sailors beware, the lighthouse is bare
    The keeper has been discharged

Does anybody know when this was created? I checked IMDB, and the release date is 2007. It may have been released in 2007, but judging by the quality of film, the dates of the models of cars shown, the fact that there are still lighthouse keepers, etc. makes me think this was filmed no earlier than the 1980s.
