There was a book, published decades ago: The Complete Herbal Handbook for The Dog, by Juliet Bairacli Levy. She went to live with gypsies and this book was amazing. I bought it at a health food store in 1971. Juliet used garlic for many reasons, but one such remedy was for deworming. You fasted the dog for 3 days, on honey and water, then made a mixture of slippery elm, chopped garlic... The slippery elm was to coat the stomach lining from the hungry worms. Our dogs pooped loads of worms after her mixture. Then we broke the fast with oatmeal soaked in water and some additional herbs. The book is now in paperback and includes cats.
I'd love cat version. . I'm homebound disabled my one yr old had surgery Jan 1 I've been giving pumpkin seeds oil pumpkin seeds for tapeworm it helps but still see eggs been a year I've done every day idk what doing wrong.

Had friends that raised working dogs. It was their living so they took thw health of their animals very seriously. Sprinkled garlic on every bowl of food their entire lives.
Yup. It was common knowledge before the “experts” started pushing $ drugs $ and demonizing the 1,000’s of years of known natural remedies. In the 1990’s I knew an elderly old man who added a small amount of garlic to his dogs food daily to keep fleas away. Whether it worked for fleas or not I don’t know, but I do know his dog, Sandy, lived to be 17 years old which is nearly unheard of today. Oh and we didn’t vaccinate back then like today. Nobody took their dogs to the vet unless something catastrophic occurred like hit by a car or broken bone. Vets were not on every corner back then. You had to drive 15-20 minutes to get to the vet. Today there is 8-10 vet offices within a 15-20 minute drive from my house. When I googled garlic to repel fleas on dogs, here is the first thing that popped up “To conclude, the claim that garlic can prevent fleas is largely unfounded. Your best bet against these pesky parasites is vet-prescribed medication.” And there you go! $$Prescribed $$ medicine $$ is the only remedy… Sad world we have become 😢
I've fed garlic for over 40 yrs in my cats and dogs food . Plus they always got my leftovers and I love garlic in every thing. None of my babies have ever had bad reactions to it, in fact one girl Abbey who is now nearly 23 years old only ever saw a vet once when I found her as a wee baby to be checked and have initial shots, then never again till a month ago for a quick check over and all was fine.
Omg, this is amazing to learn!!! Edit to add: let the garlic sit for 10 mins after chopping it, or the allicin won't work as good! So earlier this year, my cat had a spot she chewed on her back that wasn't healing and I had used witch hazel & coconut oil to no avail. I was impressed with the garlic oil I made for an earache & then used again on an infected finger, so I grabbed it to put on my cat's back hoping it would help. I happened to be chatting with a friend at the time and she said don't you know garlic is toxic to cats? So of course I googled it & saw that it said it was "very toxic" and immediately in a panic and frenzy, started bathing my cat to get it off of her...I worried all night over that! So that poor baby didn't need all that drama after all...and neither did I. Smh, I'm so sick of the internet lies sponsored by big pharma. And I also want to give you a shoutout for the anti-itch vid...I'm using the coconut oil, aloe & licorice drops mix you recommended & it is working like a charm!!! THANK YOU, DR. JONES. YOU ROCK!!!! 🙏❤️🔥🙌😎
@@dianazaalberg1993 if you look up on his channel under the "shorts" videos, there are two that were shared recently for itching pets! The recipe that I'm using of his is 1 tbsp of coconut oil, 1 tbsp of aloe vera and 2 MLS of licorice root drops mixed up & just rub it in on the itchy spots. I have to put a collar on her neck after I apply it for a couple hours so she will leave it alone but once it's absorbed, I'll take the collar off and she doesn't bother licking or scratching it!

It’s interesting to hear about how things were done back then and how much has changed since. Even though it can be a bit overwhelming, having access to more resources and veterinary care can really make a difference. Thanks for sharing your perspective!❤️
Veterinarians in my state that I live in can be quite mean and rude if you won't follow their over vaccination policies. And they won't see your pet unless you let them give them all of those extra vaccinations. Sounds also familiar doesn't it 2021
We give our dogs garlic. My girl went from massive hair loss in the summer due to flees and junipers, with garlic they are all flee free and full hair. Haven't had a flee in my house since.
My grandfather's from Italy he died in his sleep on his 90th birthday he grew garlic and herbs and tomatoes. He found an abandoned puppy a mutt that he absolutely loved can you put raw garlic in that dog's food every single day and that dog lived tell me about 18 or 19 never saw a flea on him. And we didn't vaccinate or go to the vet either we had a childhood dog named Prudence a Chesapeake Bay Retriever she went to the vet once she got salmon poisoning somebody didn't pick up the guts when we lived on Mount Hood in Oregon had to get a blood transfusion I remember our parents asking us if we wanted Prudence or Christmas we picked our prudence my grandmother had a fit we still got Christmas LOL and I lost my Labrador baby about 14 years ago the only shot she ever got was the parvo and puppy shots she lived to be 17
I used to make dog food in the 90s using Dr. Pitcairn's recipes. It had a lot of garlic and our dogs were very healthy with shiny coats. They also had garlic breath, but it was a pretty small price to pay for their excellent health!
ALL I CAN SAY IS: IF YOUR PET GETS SICK, DO A DEEP, VERY DEEP RESEARCH FIRST…UNFORTUNATELY MOST VETS CLINICS ONLY WANT YOUR MONEY BUT THEY DON’T REALLY CARE ABOUT THE REST. LEAVE THAT AS THE VERY LAST OPTION. THE FIRST OPTION SHOULD BE YOU AND YOUR TRUE LOVE FOR YOUR PET…SHAME! SHAME ON MOST VET CLINICS OUT THERE😡😡😡 Speaking from my own experience, I really hope it helps to dog lovers out there.
Had 2 different Vets do the same to me. Rose City charged me 758 dollars for endless test that were "inconclusive" and the suggestion that I come back as soon as it gets worse. Well after 758, It was my brothers cat and died 3 wks later, could have been treated and saved the DAY I SPENT 758 DOLLARS. Another did every test on my cat who had thyroid issue, VERY COMMON CAT ISSUE. He acted perplexed and told me to come back and they would do more tests. I had cut in my hours at work and could not return. Got really bad and cat lost weight and was panting. Went back as emergency, they refused me service telling me there were no appts for 3 days. So I called another clinic who told me to come in immediately and bring any xrays. They threw a fit that I asked for them, so I asked if they wanted to see my kitty, refused. Gave me photocopies of xrays. Other vet said that he had thyroid disease and that it was very common and wondered out loud why other vet didnt catch it. He shook his head and said the weight loss was permanent. GREEDY JERK RUINED MY CATS LIFE.
I fed my Staffordshire Terrier, powdered garlic on her food every day, to keep mosquittoes, ticks, mites and fleas from biting her. (She didn't taste good) It worked like a charm and she loved it.
Springtime Inc. has a study on the garlic on how it was actually done and sell powdered Garlic called Bug off for canines. I have used it for all my giant breed dogs for over 18 years of having dogs and they remained healthy, flea and tick free. They never became anemic . The study done in Japan was actually done by giving dogs a huge amount of cloves each day for months. No dog would ever be given that amount of garlic ever normally . Garlic works great for flea and tick control.
Thanks for the tip. I feel sorry for all the pets being cohersed by big pharma to take poison against ticks. My dog have had a few ticks but never got sick. I have used a little organic coconut oil on her back and that seems to keep ticks away. We dont have flees etc in Norway but lots of ticks here on the southern coast. Thanks again. Garlic powder is even more easy to use than coconut oil.
This i found out by accident. Had a dog that I was treating for other ailments, discovered she wasn't getting eaten around the ears by horse flies like my other dogs were. Started feeding agreed garlic to all of them. Flies stopped attacking the ears. So now in the summer, my dogs get garlic.
I adopted a cat 3years ago, she ended up with 6 kittens, I've kept 4 and mum. From the time the kittens were born I've cooked meat for them and added garlic in every batch! Certainly didn't believe that garlic was bad for them. Thank you for confirming this.👏
As a garlic grower & a raw feeder, I can’t thank you enough for this video! For so long I’ve been under the impression both onion & garlic were two big no no’s. Excited to start adding garlic to my little guys diet!
I use to put those expensive toxic injections on my dogs for fleas and ticks till one of them got seizures then I stop and started giving them smashed garlic on their food😊 thank to the garlic no more dirty toxic injections on them and my dogs almost never get sick or have allergies anymore and no fleas anymore 😅
Thanks for tip conserning allergies. I use organic coconut oil on the back of my pet. We dont have flees here in southern Norway but lots of ticks. I used the big pharma poison until I read about a breader of large fury dogs who used coconut oil and her dogs had never a tick again which they had using big pharma toxic remedies.
I'm so happy to see this video and learn the truth about garlic for dogs. Thank you for sharing all the benefits garlic can offer out beloved dogs, and the history of the studies done on dogs with way too much garlic. You really give us information that is beneficial and life saving for our fur babies, thank you Dr. Jones. 🙏🏾
This came at the perfect time! We've started our cat on a kidney supplement that contains garlic, and I was concerned since I've always heard garlic is toxic for cats. Great content! Thank you!
I've been feeding my dogs raw garlic for more than 35 years. I learned to homecook dog food and progressed to raw meat and bones (BARF diet) after my vet had nothing else to offer for severe skin issues except euthanizing her. That said, too much of anything is a bad idea. We lived in central Florida at the time. I give them garlic year round to keep them flea free. Only one time in the last 35 years were the fleas (in the midwest) so bad that I had to choose to use a topical treatment. I read up on that and quickly realized I didn't need to use a lot and that the product was toxic and poisonous. Hell of a trade off! One scant application and done! I keep them on garlic year round so their blood always repels repels fleas. Kudos to the doc for making this info known.
I used to work for Kyolic here in California and they have excellent products and high standards. Great company and they treat their people well. I miss my free garlic! Thanks for using their products!
I wondered about that!!!! I know when I eat raw garlic, mosquitoes avoid me. I was thinking that it might be a great flea and tick remedy, but I heard it was toxic for pets. Meanwhile I was buying expensive toxic remedies big farma advertises. I thought to myself, that maybe we were lied to about garlic being toxic for pets. Thanks,
I have given my pets garlic for their fleas for years. I also found that dental wasn’t a problem. It’s only recently that I have had ongoing dental issues when I stopped giving them garlic. Will be giving it to them again.
I agree we had our family dogs(4)when I was growing up back in the Philippines and my parent fed our dogs(4)table food which they had garlic. dog food at that time never existed in our place and guess what? They lasted as old as 14 to 16years
When I was a kid my mother always gave our dogs raw garlic to deform them and yes you would see all the dead worms. Never hurt our dogs but we were never told it would . That was 50 years ago
When I had my two other dogs that’s are now in doggie heaven I wish I knew about you and your tips for great animal care! One lived 15 years and the rescue lived 11 years. My current baby I want much longer years with me. 🙏🏻🐾❤️🐶
Once again, as in all your videos, You give us so much fantastic information. Thanks Doc! I have always avoided using garlic in my dogs food, till now, so like you told us about Cinnamon and Tumeric, garlic will be part of my dogs blended sauce from now on. Thanks so much! So grateful for your help and advice!
Thank you for helping debunk this old myth. And the valid warning about onion toxicity. The information I read about allicin alway says to wait at least 10 minutes after crushing the garlic, to allow the allicin to form.
Thank you! I grew up eating lots of garlic and I believe in it. Especially when it's raw. I've been wanting to know about the fact on garlic for dogs. (and cats) Thank you, Dr. Jones. I am very excited start giving my dogs some Allicin rom garlic. I appreciate your knowledge and sharing like this very much. Thank you! Doumo arigatou!
Thank you ! I always thought onions bad, garlic ok, now it's confirmed. Amazon has this brand of aged garlic and it's not expensive. I put it on my shopping list.😊 For me and my dog!
The rescue I adopted my dog from, recommends a garlic tablet every day, for no ticks or fleas. I have been doing this for 3 years, and don’t have to use flea & tick repellents, I have not seen any bugs on my dog!!
Glad to see you cover this, as i've read conflicting information too. Only had one negative instance with giving my dog garlic. I popped a bag of popcorn and put WAY too much garlic powder on it (even i thought it was pretty strong) and shared it with my dog. He scarfed it too, but about 10 minutes later barfed it all up! Since then, he's been a little adverse to the smell, but the small amounts for regular cooking haven't caused further issues. Good to hear the old advice is still good, and i didn't know it works against yeast and bacteria too. Thank you!
I wonder if its the type of popcorn. Microwave popcorn has all kinds of seed oils and artificial stuff.A lot of powdered spices have silicon in them. Some brands of store herbs often show up with dangerous contaminants.
@@cynthiathomas5754 i don't think so, it was the garlic powder. Too much, tasted like pepper almost to me. Just too much for a puppy's stomache (he was about 1yr then). Since he's completely DEVOURED chicken breasts i've bought from a local grocer that are battered in many kinds of pepper and garlic (no onion!!!). No ill effects from those and we both love them!
@@seanwoodrum3658 as far as i know, popcorn is as good for them as it is for us. Check for onion (0 Onion!!!) or any other obvious things like sodium. I really prefer stove popped popcorn for many reasons, though my dog hasn't had any issues beyond declining it at times or that time with too much garlic powder. I probably put 1/2 oz on that bag, so most people probably wouldn't have liked it either!
Hello, and thank you! Especially adding the why not for onions. That was my next question. Murphy just turned 4 and has had homemade food since 12 weeks. Healthy! I will add the garlic to his mix. All the best,
I used to make treats for our previous dog and I incorporated it with garlic because they said it’s good for their breath and she’s only 28 lbs. and she lived till 19.5 years old.
Growing up we always had at least 4 very active dogs. We lived on 11 acres and they ran around all day long. We didn’t feed them can food often. In fact they didn’t like can food much and often gave them gas. You should have seen the disappointment on their faces when they saw it but they ate it anyway but not as fast as leftovers. They ate leftover meat, gravy, juices from dinner, vegetables, etc. mixed with dry food. Everything had garlic and onions in it. It never sickened them. It did deter ticks, fleas and mosquitoes that we had plenty of. We did worm them twice a year, but I believe it also deterred tapeworms. They got can food if we had things like kielbasa, sauerkraut, hot dogs or acidic foods. What did sicken them were flea collars. I never heard of garlic, onions, chocolate (we didn’t feed them candy anyway) being bad for dogs until about 10 years ago. We raised 11 dogs over my lifetime and they were fine with onions and garlic. They all died of old age.
My husband always made homemade dog food and he always put garlic in the dog food to keep them from getting worms. We never had any problems. Our dogs didn't get worms. In the olden days, our dogs hardly ever got sick.
Thankyou Dr Jones . They use garlic in salt licks and mineral licks in the UK . Keeps the flys away too . Of course they don't over dose by twenty five times the dosage . Thankyou again .

Either this is a huge coincidence or the doc saw my suggestion to debunk common things “they” say are bad for our dogs that really are actually healthy and harmless when given appropriately! Garlic seems like a good idea to me based on all the evidence you’ve provided. Would love to hear about other such food/supplements/oils/etc. It would be amazing if you could have a list of these good items on your site that people can refer to along with links to any videos you make about them. My dog gets 1 small clove, freshly chopped organic garlic every other day or so. It's part of our pest control routine alongside essential oils and a tickless device. Working perfect for us in our area in PNW
Very interesting. I was under the impression that all members of the allium family were toxic to dogs. Great to get the information regarding the difference between garlic and onions. Thank you
I was growing garlic in a container on my porch. It was still pretty small. My puppy ate all of the leaves one day. The next day she pulled it out in of the ground. She likes to eat on my garden experiments.
My new puppy came home from the shelter with kennel cough and gave it to my other dog. I used garlic and ACF childrens natural cough syrup. Both of them recovered quickly
Yes, I second that request. My cat Rocky used to eat small portions of mashed up avocado regularly, when I was preparing it for myself. He would ask me for it and enjoyed it with no side effects noted. When I saw that avocado was on the list of no-nos, I stopped giving it to him, but I've always 🤔 wondered... Rocky lived to a ripe old age 😺

We gave our first dog garlic powder against worms and charcoal to stop dog breath, with his meal. We were doing a lot of long distance travel and always went with us. I only gave up using both garlic and charcoal when I could no longer buy it in bulk. Overtime I had forgotten about using both of these two highly beneficial ingredients. We sadly had to put the dog we adopted back in 2011 down due to having multiple tumours that developed extremely rapidly. So this comes as a timely reminder for our next adopted dog we are thinking about doing again.
I am happy to hear this news, also sad to hear it a little too late for one of my dogs. Lilith was 9 years old and had developed a bacterial infection in her bladder. She showed no symptoms of illness until it had gotten so bad that her back legs suddenly paralyzed & she was losing control of her bladder. 😢We rushed her to the veterinarian immediately, but after examining her thoroughly, he recommended we put her to sleep. It was such heartbreaking news. I felt as if I were pulling the life support from one of my children.😢😢😢 Thank you, doctor, for sharing all of your knowledge with us. I pray by using your wisdoms that I won't have to go through this again until my remaining 3 furbabies are ready to go from very old age.❤🙏🏼🫶🏻

When I googled garlic to repel fleas on dogs, here is the first thing that popped up
“To conclude, the claim that garlic can prevent fleas is largely unfounded. Your best bet against these pesky parasites is vet-prescribed medication.”
And there you go!
$$Prescribed $$ medicine $$ is the only remedy…
Sad world we have become 😢
I've fed garlic for over 40 yrs in my cats and dogs food . Plus they always got my leftovers and I love garlic in every thing. None of my babies have ever had bad reactions to it, in fact one girl Abbey who is now nearly 23 years old only ever saw a vet once when I found her as a wee baby to be checked and have initial shots, then never again till a month ago for a quick check over and all was fine.
PS, Abbey is a cat
@@cherylbradbury4875I was left wondering 😊
Hi did you use raw garlic and how much did you give to your cat ? Thank you
I give my dogs a piece of raw garlic and ginger daily and have been doing this for over a decade.
@ShannaM1 licorice? What video was it? My dog is itching and coconut oil is not Working please help
I’m so glad to hear that the anti-itch remedy is working well for your cat! Thank you for the kind words, 🙏❤️
the video is only about evidence for dogs: NEVER give garlic to cats!
@@margotmargot4426 Wrong. The title even says for dogs and cats and he very clearly said it in the video as well. Maybe watch again?

Yes, same as doctors, all about big pharma and money 💰
My grandfather's from Italy he died in his sleep on his 90th birthday he grew garlic and herbs and tomatoes. He found an abandoned puppy a mutt that he absolutely loved can you put raw garlic in that dog's food every single day and that dog lived tell me about 18 or 19 never saw a flea on him. And we didn't vaccinate or go to the vet either we had a childhood dog named Prudence a Chesapeake Bay Retriever she went to the vet once she got salmon poisoning somebody didn't pick up the guts when we lived on Mount Hood in Oregon had to get a blood transfusion I remember our parents asking us if we wanted Prudence or Christmas we picked our prudence my grandmother had a fit we still got Christmas LOL and I lost my Labrador baby about 14 years ago the only shot she ever got was the parvo and puppy shots she lived to be 17
Years ago when I lived in africa we would put garlic in food to stop ticks
I used to make dog food in the 90s using Dr. Pitcairn's recipes. It had a lot of garlic and our dogs were very healthy with shiny coats. They also had garlic breath, but it was a pretty small price to pay for their excellent health!
That massive amount of anything would be toxic….studies can be so cruel and ridiculous
SHAME ON MOST VET CLINICS OUT THERE😡😡😡
Speaking from my own experience, I really hope it helps to dog lovers out there.
@@MICOCINAMEXICANA11 I have given my pets garlic for years and they have no please I have not been doing so for a little bit and now they have fleas

I am so very sorry for your loss!.:-( I hope that you will file a report with your state veterinary board.
Yes, follow the money...
Torturing animals for frivolous studies. Evil. 😡 Thanks for the video, Dr! 💜🌞

I fed my Staffordshire Terrier, powdered garlic on her food every day, to keep mosquittoes, ticks, mites and fleas from biting her.
(She didn't taste good)
It worked like a charm and she loved it.
I also use springtime bug off garlic granules.
@@nogames8982 Great company and great supplements. I use the Longevity for my Dogs.
Springtime garlic has beef flavored for dogs. Unfortunatly my cat wont be tricked. Feed it to my horse daily, no bugs at all. No fly spray necessary
Springtime gave my dog 2 extra year. It reversed his stinking skin and yucky eyes. What looks like aging is often poor nutrition
Also great as a repellent for biting insects
This i found out by accident. Had a dog that I was treating for other ailments, discovered she wasn't getting eaten around the ears by horse flies like my other dogs were. Started feeding agreed garlic to all of them. Flies stopped attacking the ears. So now in the summer, my dogs get garlic.
God bless you sir, forever in your debt. Many thanks for all that you do. My dog's will be eternally grateful.
Don't do it
I gave my dogs garlic in their food for YEARS and they ALL lived to Very Old ages and were never sick. Also its the BEST anti-flea remedy I found.
Thank you!
I’m glad you found the information helpful! ❤️
Rule of thumb, anything in excess can be toxic so stick to prescribed amounts. Thanks for the clarification Doc,much appreciated.
Good to know because my long hair chihuahua loves it and I would fret over it
Ty so tired of people saying its dangerous!
I use garlic for my dogs! Its good for fleas and if they get sick!

Thank you for helping debunk this old myth. And the valid warning about onion toxicity. The information I read about allicin alway says to wait at least 10 minutes after crushing the garlic, to allow the allicin to form.

Thank you!
How come I heard popcorn is bad for dogs???? And dogs love popcorn! So somebody please tell me true or false is popcorn bad for dogs???
I wonder if its the type of popcorn. Microwave popcorn has all kinds of seed oils and artificial stuff.A lot of powdered spices have silicon in them. Some brands of store herbs often show up with dangerous contaminants.
I have read that microwave popcorn is toxic for pets and humans. There is something in the composition of the bag itself that is toxic.
You know, I noticed the improvement in my dog health with using just a little garlic.
Hello, and thank you! Especially adding the why not for onions. That was my next question. Murphy just turned 4 and has had homemade food since 12 weeks. Healthy! I will add the garlic to his mix. All the best,
I’m glad I could help clarify that. It’s great to hear that Murphy is healthy and thriving on homemade food!😊👍
I've given my cats and dogs little bit of garlic through out their lives.. All GOOD! No PROBLEMS! EVER-

Its just crazy that those initial studies were wrong and pet owners were made to believe that garlic is toxic for dogs🤬

Yes, I second that request. My cat Rocky used to eat small portions of mashed up avocado regularly, when I was preparing it for myself. Heard the same thing about onion. Avocado is another myth. My clients dog eats them from the tree. He loves em.
