- I went back and forth on buying a GHD/GHR for a long time. After having owned one for around 5 months, I give you me feedback on if YOU should buy one.

Yes I should... I was literally the only person at my commercial gym using it pre-covid. I’ve already ordered one. My hamstrings are by far my strongest muscle group and GHR as helped me go from a 455 DL to 585. Along with the Ab work and low back extensions.

as a third piece of gear after power rack and functional trainer, yes it is good but focus on power rack/barbells, dumbbells and functional trainer. This falls into the nice to have category.
thanks for the review. I've been close a few times on pulling the trigger for one of these, but I felt there's gotta be a diy version I can do. I ended up coming across and article where Bud Charinga became obsessed with this machine after he figured out what the Soviets were using it for, so then he made his own version with a saw horse, wrapped and nailed a cushion on top of it, (like a diy pommel horse) and used his barbell to hold his legs down. So I think I'll go that route but I'll also make stall bars to hold my legs in place. Then I can fold up the saw horse and put it away to make room.

I bought a $250 Titan GHD a couple of years ago and absolutely don't regret it. I was originally on the fence as wether to buy a reverse hyper or the GHD and ultimately decided to get the GHD.1. Because of price, & 2. Because I figured that I could hopefully recreate the reverse hyper movement with bands on the GHD + all of the traditional GHD exercises.

Very interesting reading the comments. I am trying to recreate a 45 degree back extension machine with my rack and some rack mount rollers, as well as looking at hamstring development rollers on the floor. Space. I didn’t find the GHD to be particularly helpful but fixing the lower body clearly makes sense as a strength developer and some customers need that extra work.
You might be able to do it with a couple of roller pads mounted to your rack.
Made the same mistake. Went with the Reverse Hyper first thinking it would help low back issues from an old injury. Wasted a good chunk of change. The GHD though is awesome. Giant sets on the ghd with stiff leg deads will melt your glutes and hams and surprisingly, no more back issues.

Reverse hypers caused back pain for me where there hadn't ever been any to begin with. If I do them, I get jacked up. If I don't do them, my back stays fine. I bought one and it was a mistake as well.

I have a very basic home gym with a rack, barbell and dumbells and the only extra special equipment i have is GHR and it's been very useful and important piece of my training to have for sure.

I used to use the floor style one at my old gym. Still did the job just fine without the extra range of motion👍🏼👍🏼. I still like reverse hypers so I'm thinking eventually I'll get the donkey. Rhino drop in is first on my list though.
I have both. I use the ghd every workout. I stopped using my reverse hyper. The GHD is very effective for training hamstrings. That’s hard to do in a home gym. I started with sets of 1 90 days ago and am now up to 3 sets of 9. In my home gym my leg workouts consist of squats or deadlifts and this. That’s all.
Great progress. when I got mine I had to use a band to help b/c I couldn't do many but can now do some weighted sets of 10!

Bought a second hand one for 160Euro, not Rogue brand or any ultra high brand, its an old model ATX one, yeah its big but for that price... and having to want to try one ever since i started lifting years ago and no gym ever had one. im damn stoked about it. its big in my living room but damn its exciting to basicly have a full gym now in my living room.

Bret Contreras on T- Nation wrote an article on peak torque force comparison between GHR vs. 45° hyperextension bench. Basically 45° hyper offers overall better peak torque forces than GHR, for the hip musculature is under constant tension at the beginning and end ROM, where peak force occurs once torso is parallel to floor. Thus your better off buying a 45° back extension bench instead.
I wouldn't trust much from T Nation personally.
I have the rogue ghd 1.0. Really regret not buying the 2.0 as that one is easier to adjust from the looks of things. When I got it, I barely used it. These days I use it a lot. Great for warming up before squats. Great for some ab exercises, but as you say you can do that without it. Think a better use of the space it takes up would be a plate loaded lat pulldown/low row if there were any decent ones for a similar price.
I actually think if I were buying new I don't know if I'd go GH1 or Abram. Once it's set I haven't found I need to adjust really.

I have debating with myself if I should get a GHD or not. After watching and hearing your input, I belive I would much rather have a leg extension leg curl hybrid machine than just a GHD. At least I would be able to hit the hams as well as the quads. Yes I understand that both hit the hams in different ways. But would like something that's "more bang for my buck." Thanks for the video.

Definitely feel a GHD/GHR would be more beneficial than a reverse hyper, feel you can do more on the GHD/GHR
However if committing to getting one I would make sure other strength equipment would come first
I train for functional strength/health these days, but I do like to incorporate some body-building components and some powerlifting components in my strength training
In order I'd say
1. Some sort of power rack/half rack/combo rack etc to perform major compound lifts and be the epicentre of your gym, along with your non-negotiable barbell/plates etc. Maybe bands too for a bit of versatility or accessory work, particularly for power racks and half racks where bands can be looped around anywhere and everywhere
2. A bench, preferably an adjustable one for more exercise variation
3. Set of dumbbells, maybe kettlebells if you're into crossfit and stuff
4. A landmine/torsinator, tons and tons of stuff you can do with one. If you own a top quality power rack, a pair of jammer/lever arms would probably work better instead
Then a GHD/GHR probably comes into play, along with other specialist machines/pieces like a leg press, lat pulldown/high-low pulley system, preacher bench etc. A good well equipped power rack/half rack eliminates the need for a power tower (chin up/dip station)
Some solid points and I def agree, I've bought/sold a ton of stuff in my home gym and it took me 6 years before buying one!
@@BasementBrandon you've probably heard it a few times already from others, but over the last two months I've decided also to convert over to a home gym and the pandemic definitely was an instigator, but feel it's the right decision long-term and not a decision I'll regret and watching your videos (and other reviewers like Coop from GGR) have definitely helped me with things to look out for on the market when selecting equipment.
Felt in particular that there were far more convenience and time related benefits training at home compared to sticking with my local commercial gym (still closed) which had a tendency of being extremely busy peak hour mid afternoon onwards weekdays, frustrating me on some particular days, like chest or leg day and after 16 years of gym training, I feel ready to move on.
Currently in the process of identifying and saving up for a rack, was able to secure a quality adjustable bench (rated at over 800 pounds but I reckon it could take more) and some hex dumbbells/stand to start off with, but saving for that rack in about 2-3 months time.
I think a mix of things like a quality heavy duty 1000+ pound rating build, such as the steel has to be at least 3mm thick and somewhere around 60-80mm in build with long structural frame warranties of say at least 10 years just in case something goes wrong. Then potential expandability, working within space/footprint but also be at a reasonable price point will come into my decision making (don't mind paying more for good quality). Last but not least a reasonable supplier to deal with as customer service is important too.
But anyways, love your videos mate and seeing an insight into your wealth of knowledge in this area.

I do Nordic Hamstring Curls with bodyweight. I feel its way better because I use my own body weight and its cheaper than a GHD and I dont need extra space. I put my feet under the cross member of my bench press bench and knee on a yoga pad.
I got a hyperextension bench where I lay down reversly, attach some rubber bands on the bottom of the machine an do reverse hyper.
So I saved a lot of money, space and can do 3 exercises. Leg curls, hyperextension and reverse hyper.
Fair enough!
I do like using the one at the gym, and look forward to resuming doing so when the gym reopens one of these centuries, but it's hardly vital.

Sold my Rogue Abrams 2.0 to make room for a leg press/hack squat machine I picked up on FB marketplace. Wasn't using the GHD enough to justify taking up that much space. I was lucky to get most of my money back on the resale.

I like GHR's but, yeah, I doubt I'd ever buy one even if I had the space. I'd probably program stiff legs or RDL's before I bought a whole new piece of equipment.

Thanks for the video! Do you think a GHD pad would have an advantage not rigging up a Nordic/natural GHR? These lay on the floor, and have a pad for the bottom and front of your knees.
Personally I like having my knees hang free vs put my weight on a pad there.

My question is about the minimum ceiling height for the Abrams 2.0. My basement ceiling is kind of low and every GHD looks like the pads are 4 feet off the ground. I'm kind of waiting for some company to make one that isn't so GD big.
They make floor models.
Thoughts on the rogue ghds that attach to a rack or wall strip? I made a plyo box earlier in quarantine, so would only need the rack attachment and the pad. Would certainly help with floor space, but not cost or usability/functionality
From what I've seen/heard, they're kind of a pain to move around. Most people who like them end up making a wall attachment for them and leave them in place most of the time.
@@BasementBrandon Thanks Brandon! Appreciate the insight. Still amazes me that you reply to all the comment. I was worried about the set up time / disassemble time. Seems like picking up a GHD second hand in the used market may be the way to go if I'm going to have the set up permanently in place. Have seen Sorinex, Legend, and a few other brands on Facebook marketplace in recent times for less than $500 in my area.
The biggest downside is the footprint, for me at least. I wish I had a bigger space, I use maybe 1/3 of my garage for a workout, so I wish I could implement this piece of equipment but in a more compact form, or at least if I could quickly fold it somehow to conserve space.

I think the angle at which it places your feet and the adjustability give it a "leg up"
Why not just get a combo from rouge or titan? Exact same floor space and you get both pieces? The titan reverse hyper ghd combo was around 700.

Are you sure that a ghd helps to deadlift more weight? I have a floor ghd since 1 or 2 years.. my deadlift went up since using it! I dont regret it by all means..but maybe my DL would have been went up also without using it..
So i am starting a test rigth now..want to find out if my deadlift max will go down if i stop using my ghd..

It shouldn't go down, but it may just not go up as much.
Hey Brandon. Im sure you’ve been more busy responding to the comments after the influx of viewers from quarantine but I hope you get the chance to still read this. So recently I purchased a barbell and some cheap plates but I’ve noticed that there’s been deep scratches on the barbell sleeves from taking on and off the weights, is this ok?
Mostly will be cosmetic but some cheap plates when cast aren't always "clean" inside, might be able to file them down some to smooth them out if needed.
What about the rogue donkey? Should the padding on a ghd be semilunar? Does that shape help in any way other than comfort of exercise?
Tough to say, I've seen these hybrids be more of a jack of all trades master of none kind of deal (have not used one). But at $2000 before shipping and tax, I would rather just get the GHD at that point.

Buy some leg rollers and a foam pad for your knees, and you have Nordic curls. Not strong enough yet? Use a band for assistance.

For me, I got more out of the GHD than the Reverse Hyper. I'd try to have him try both in a gym before committing to either!

Bells of Steel ReverseHammer is the most versatile drink stand for a decent price. Probably not the best, or worst, at any of its functions, but it gets a lot done in one spot.

Would the strength shop compact ghd be a good alternative as it can be stored upright and doesn't have the legs so technically should have a smaller footprint? Something I have been considering and would love to hear your opinion.
I think it depends, one of the things I don't like about floor models is your knees aren't free to move as much as they are with the free standing ones.
@@RonMexico527 Take a look at someone doing a GHR with just the half moon pads. You'll notice where their knees are at the beginning of the movement and the middle are quite different. I've found with the knee pads people tend to jam their knees in and keep them locked to the bottom support pad.

GHD is optional but that shirt is a necessity for maximum gains.

I am nervous to spend this much on something like this. Especially if I can't try one. I don't know anyone who has one and your globogyms don't have them. I am surprised they don't make a rack mount version for those of us who don't have space to give up. Maybe a Monster Rack accessory.
Rogue makes them, but they're not as convenient as you'd want.
@@BasementBrandon aaaahhhh. Looking at the rack setup it looks like it only works with RML uprights and if you are a larger individual it looks a bit sketch. Oh well. Maybe when I have a bigger garage.

I can do back extensions and other exercises that the GHR can, but honestly I hate having to set shit up during my workout. I like having the right tools set up for me during my workouts with out having to tamper with stuff. Plus I do miss the GHR since I stopped going to commercial gyms in 2020.

Neither, I'd try to find what's causing the lower pain issues and fix that.
Do paving & pressure washing I've had major lower back pain for about 9 years now. I've had my back go out where I felt paralyzed for hours. Times I would be walking and my knees buckled out and I almost drop to the floor but catch myself before dropping to my knees. A whole lot of sorness. Up until a month ago I read up on the whole reverse hyper thing and benefits. When I saw Rogue had a hot deal on the Westside Reverse Hyper I bought it. Been using it close to a month now and no bullshit.....my lower back has felt absolutely incredible and stronger. I'm all more nimbly bimbly and even more mobile than before lol. I've read where it has not worked for others and many who it has changed and rehabbed them. I'm one who it has done wonders for so far. I'm now about to buy the REP Fitness GHD as well to add to my gym

@@BasementBrandon Btw seeing as how you like to try new stuff, have you ever trained with macebells? They dont take up a lot of space but its incredible fun and so good for your shoulders. Both light light maces are fun to do extended flows with as wel as heavy maces just for 360's and 2-10's.
I actually own a Kabuki Shoulderok (loadable mace), but I just really haven't used it.

Soooooo. Do you personally believe it has helped you “up” your lower body strength ie squat, deadlift, etc? Will you add size doing these workouts or is it..similar to crossover symmetry effects on the shoulders. Heard someone reference it being a way to “bulletproof” their hammies. Thanks dude.
I think this has helped a ton in my training, I use it 2x a week and it's been solid.
Did you ever make the full review? I searched ‘abrams’ and ‘ghd’ and didn’t see it. I’m torn between this and one of Elite’s...yeah, I’m a Tate fan boy, oh well...but the rogue looks sturdier and more versatile.
I never did and I ended up selling this and moving on to a more custom sorinex one for like 3x the cost. I will say the Rogue Abram is/was more sturdy than my current one. It's a great piece. No experience with the elite/williams one.

Power rack is a great center piece.
Which model of GHD has band pegs?
You can add them to a lot of them.
I think Reverse Hypers are probably better utilized for shorter guys. It seems that taller guys have to go up further on the pad which sort of mitigates the benefits of the exercise. Not really a shock seeing as Louie designed it and he’s the size of a hermit crab 😂
Lol. I also think people tend to overuse the momentum of the arm and load up weight just to look cool :)
A GHD was a must have for my gym. Can't go wrong with the versatility it offers if you have the space and enjoy absolutely annihilating your posterior chain, from head to toe. I hope you enjoy yours 👍
