My 250,000 mile Acura NSX Almost caught on fire, but WHY?

  • My 1991 Acura NSX almost caught on fire thanks to a faulty stereo. The NSX is known for having issues with its stereo, Climate control unit, and gauge cluster. As they get older, the capacitors start to leak, and the risk of fire goes up.
Be sure to check your NSX occasionally for capacitors leaking, or remove the OEM units to be safe!

So what you’re saying is deleting my stereo was a safety upgrade 👌

Some good advice. That is wild. Glad it did not cause a bigger issue.

Glad you caught it. I had the CCU done out of necessity, the cluster done preventatively, and the radio has been a "self-solving" problem because the head unit functionally died before it could attempt to take the car with it. More motivation I guess to not bother trying to find a factory unit and instead go some more-modern route with that. I hear the guys down the road out there have something in the works.

As Craig has pointed out there aren't any documented cars burning to the ground from stereos. Mine was bad enough the fear of it occurring was real. Regardless it's something to be aware of

Question: you say "addressed" it and "serviced it" and that it's from a newer model car. Had you already sent it to Brian or was it just a newer audio unit that Brian didn't touch yet? Wondering if Brian's work failed or not. I have a 91 with an OEM stereo from a later model year NSX and it probably has not been touched by Brian yet.

This one was a unit that had not been serviced by Brian.... Had been sitting unpowered on a shelf since 1995. Brian's work kicks ass

    Great to know, thank you!
    You specifically mentioned…
    1. CCU
    2. Audio head unit
    3. Gauge cluster
Is there anything else? What about the clock, for instance?

As of right now these are the only known issues and all are serviceable

My audio unit was recently serviced. I’ve been planning on gauge cluster. Guess I better also do the CCU.

@@koichihiura7617 highly advised. It's obviously not a 100 percent fix as my stereo had been serviced but yeah... Can't turn a blind eye. And glad I had a element fire stick with me

Chance of these things actually causing an extended fire?

These failures have been known to burn these cars to the ground.

NSXs not withstanding, stereos in old Ford stuff are well documented as the cause of more than a few fires that start in the dash and expand.

In over 25 years as part of the NSX community I’ve never heard of the stereo causing a fire. Got citations (plural)?

Actually on my Facebook thread on owners group a couple others posted up their "hot" stereos. Mine ended up damaging the electrical connector going into the stereo but that was the limit of the damage thankfully.
