  • Savage Arms - Savage Model 6A 22 Rifle Review. In this video, an American-made 1939 Savage Model 6A 22 rifle is reviewed. Basically, the Savage Model 6A is the forerunner of the Stevens Model 87A, which was also made as the Springfield 87A and the Montgomery Wards Western Field model 87A. These 22 “Gill Gun” rifles could fire 22 short, 22 long and 22 long rifle rounds. These rifles could operate in semi-automatic mode when shooting 22 LR rounds. Includes range activity and a demonstration of disassembly and reassembly.

I have my grandpa's old Stevens 87b. He bought it brand new in 1957, and it was his gopher gun until he passed away. I absolutely love it. The only issue it has is a problem with ejecting spent cases (I even got new extractors, springs, etc, for it, but the problem persists). It has a peep sight and easily hits spent shotgun cases at 35 yards. Even with the ejecting issue, it is my favorite gun to shoot.

Hi Mick - Just to add to the history part of your discussion, I inherited a Ranger 101.11A from my father who acquired (not new) in 1953. I a pretty sure the early Ranger models (which this is) was made by the Savage Arms Corporation and sold by the Sears Roebuck Company. Because of some markings on the barrel, I believe my rifle, like yoiurs was made in the late 1930s or very early 1940s.

Nice pick up. I think you did well at $190 considering the rifle looks to be in good/VG condition with a walnut stock. Oh, and just so you'll know - it's pronounced CHICK-o-pee Falls.

Neat old gun! I did cringe a little, though, when you stated the Model 7 was 'clip fed'. Do you have any experience with the French X51 Bis? It's a really neat design .22LR carbine.

No I haven't. I'll look into the French X51. Thanks. As for the Savage Model 7 and 7a, I've been told they were auto-loader semiautomatics, but a pump-action version was made as well. Otherwise, images seem to show them equipped with a magazine under the receiver. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Don't forget to like, share and subscribe.
