I ALWAYS FIND MYSELF COMING BACK TO YOUR NO BULL COMMENTARY ON THE CZ457. I ENJOY YOUR EXPLANATION AND YOUR OPINION ON 22 RIFLES IN GENERAL. THANK YOU JOSH FOR ALL YOUR TIME AND EFFORT PUTTING OUT THESE VIDEOS.
I agree Josh. I have the CZ 457 MTR. I have installed a Harrell barrel tuner and it shoots outstanding using Norma Tac 22 and RWS Rifle Match. Great gun. I don't compete but I do enjoy shooting just under MOA at 100 yards and cleaning the rack on my KYL targets at 100 yards. Totally agree with your review of this rifle. Thanks.
I compete (nrl22) with mine..if i spent more than $1,200 that would take me out of the base class..i use eley match grade..check out nrl22 base class rules..
You have such a great understanding of words and an even greater understanding of great rifles and thankyou for your excellent knowledge of CZ 22 rifles.
Good video. This is what I would buy starting out in NRL22. It's hard to beat CZ for the money. Every one of their rimfires that I've tried have been great.
CZ 457 Jaguar 24.8” threaded barrel open sights, so far groups penny sized flawlessly at 50 yards with Norma Standard TAC @ $5 per 50. No upgrades(yet), no scope just trigger adjustments so far. So impressed with it. Smoother bolt then the 3 different Anschultz rifles I’ve tried so far also. However I’m currently saving for a Anschutz 1710 Competition Classic HB 20” SS with threaded match barrel & optimized match chamber with two stage 4-7.5oz trigger
Have been following your vids Josh... Purchased my Varmint MTR because of your great reviews. I've owned it a couple weeks now and I've put about 1000 rds through it so far. What a great shooter with the right ammo. I've adjusted trigger pull to about as low as I think the factory trigger will go safely... I've added some extras but not sure I could mention name brands of products I added. i.e. scope base, bolt knob, extended magazine release lever... I've been enjoying it a lot! Thanks again!!!
Great Video, and solid assessment of this rifle. As someone who's run the gambit of rifles over the years for competition, I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment about the 457!
I have a Brno mod 2-E built in 1988 still in mint condition it's a tack driver. They were called Brno before CZ. They are, in my opinion, the best.22 lr rifles you can buy.
I have got just 457 Varmint and yesterday I finished benchrest competitions with 5 place for 71 shooters! CZ making brilliant rifles and even don't need to buy so expensive one like MTR! :) Greetings Josh!
I've owned multiple 457's both in 16.5" and 20", all of which had MTR barrels with the exception of a 17 HMR I used to own. I currently own a 20" LRP and a Bergara B14R. Both go for pretty much the same price here in Canada. If I had to recommend one over the other, it would be the Bergara. It's just slightly better at 50 yds, but it also allowed me to install a Remingting 700 style trigger which beats the CZ's trigger system (stock or aftermarket) hands down.
@@PursuitofAccuracy Your perspective is interesting. I've owned several custom rifles based on the 700 platform, and was blown away by the CZ trigger once adjusted. It is 2 lb with zero takeup and almost zero over travel. It is literally like the proverbial glass rod. I wonder if I just got lucky, this is a sample size of only one. I was lucky enough to score a CZ 457 Varmint Precision Chassis MTR in un-fired condition for a shade over $700. Can't wait to see how it shoots. Your videos have me excited!
@@HighGear39 i am for sure a trigger snob 😁😁. Most people would find the cz trigger to be very nice, but once you start playing with the 10oz stuff nothing else compares
@@PursuitofAccuracy 10oz triggers? WOW! I was a SWAT sniper and no way they would allow a trigger that light! If a Gnat passed gas in that general direction it might fire! I didn't even know they could get that light! I'm going to have to get behind one and give it a try!
Josh, another great video. Between you, Cyclops, and Eagle Eye I have been hooked! However, to be fair you should compare the groups with the stock MTR barrel against that Lilja barrel. You talk about getting the best accuracy for the least money, but you then put a $500 barrel on it. BTW my first outing yesterday with my CZ 457 Varmint (not MTR barrel) returned several sub-MOA 5-shot groups. Indoor range at 25 yards. I did swap the trigger spring for a 12oz spring so pull weight is less than 1 lb. Put an Athlon Helos 4-20x50mm scope on it. Literally several one-hole groups. My reason for saying this is to give others a thought to try out the CZ stock configuration before spending more money for "diminishing returns" like you say. They might try some bolt shims for $12 to improve accuracy if they are not getting great accuracy out of the box. I don't plan to compete but the fun of shooting tight groups is worth the initial cost.
@@kennethmartinez3725 Ah, thanks. Watched that and it sort of proves my point that unless you want to compete at the highest level, or just want the absolute most accuracy possible, then it really is a case of diminishing returns. One tenth inch difference between the Lilja and the CZ MTR barrel - five, 5-shot groups each in the wind at 100 yards with different chasses and scopes. Use the CZ MTR stock and swap out the barrels.
The real difference cant be easily shown on video. The lilja is incrementally better than the mtr, yes. The lilja also is better and allows for the owner to adjust headspace. Its also been far more consistent day to day than the stock barrels for me. 22lr can be finicky at different temps, humidity, DA etc.
I purchased the CZ 457 Varmint model 3 years ago for $400. It has yet to disappoint, out shoots everything at the range. It favorite ammo is Aguila 22LR Standard, one hole groups are the norm!
I am impressed with your results. I would offer a different brand of rifle for your consideration. I have a Lithgow LA 101 in .22LR. It is standard straight from the dealer. The only things I have done to it are bedded the action, ensured the barrel is free floating (it was not properly when I got it), and replaced the trigger springs with a lighter set. The barrel is stock standard, so my slight modifications did not cost anywhere near what yours did. I have only been doing bench rest for less than 5 years and am 69 years old. I did do some hunting in my teen years on a farm, but nothing for over 45 years before taking up bench rest. The range I shoot at is always windy and it is mostly just a matter of how varied it is. We shoot 50 and 100 yards. My best score was 250/250 with 11 centers out of a possible 25. That day, and on other occasions, I outshot the fancy target rifles and all their expensive gear. My scope is from ZeroTech and cost $800 Australian. My Lithgow makes me look a whole lot better. Blessings from Australia.
I might add that before one buys a Lilja, check out the factory barrel. Mine was very close to my Lilja in accuracy. But the extra length and weight of the Lilja makes my gun balance better . My factory barrel was 16 1/2”. I do love the Lilja. It shoots less expensive ammo very good . I’m anxious to see what improvements I can get with higher end Ammo .
I agree with you, especially if you don't need a high performance barrel! My factory 20.5 in. MTR barrel turns in average 100 yard 5 shot groups using an obscure ammo that I came across, "Top Shot", that measures .719! It produces the occasional flyer, but I can live with that. I'm still considering a lilja barrel, but since I am only competing with myself, I'm not sure that I want to spend the money!
@@rt66rc86 that’s awesome ! There are a lot of great shooting CZ barrels out there . But at .7”, you won the lottery too! I hate to admit this , but I bought the Lilja for two reasons :1) this was a project gun and it was in my original vision to use it with the mdt xrs chassis , 2) my 161/2” barrel shot better than I could hope, but I just couldn’t warm up to the barrel extending only 1/2” beyond the end of the chassis… I didn’t like the look . If I’d have had a 20” CZ barrel that shot as well, I probably wouldn’t have changed anything . But I don’t regret the Lilja at all . I did get improvement at 100. I have not done any lot testing either, nor have I tried Eley Match as Josh has suggested . Fun stuff .
@@Jeff-mv4yy I'm with you on the looks of the 16.5 in. barrels! I just don't like the looks of those either! And, I do realize that I got lucky with my MTR factory barrel for sure! However, I still think about that Lilja barrel, they are only 150 miles from me and I can't help thinking about that potential extra accuracy! :) I haven't tried any of the high dollar ammo yet. My shooting budget is being split between my new RC hobby and shooting, so one suffers one day while the other gets the gravy! Then it gets turned around! ;)
Mine loves Norma TAC .22. Penny sized groups of 5 all day without fail @ 50 yards still open sights. 24.8” treaded Jaguar OEM Barrel. Norma TAC 22 is $5 per 50 here or $49.90 per brick of 500! It’s made in Germany by RWS. Also CCI Standard Velocity is almost as good at $5 per 50 or $49.90 per 500 brick. Less lube on the CCI is why I think however my old Match Pistols(Browning Medalist, Colt Woodsman Match Target series ll, HiStandard Supermatic Citation Military with fluted 8” bull barrel & my S&W Model 41 PC) love it(CCI Standard, Quite & Norma TAC 22)& group well. So take it from me, hi $$$ ammo is just that, Hi $$$$. SK Rifle Match & ELEY Standard is good if it’s $8 or less per 50. I want to try Lapua Midas X sometime. Maby if and when I win the lottery or get a rebate check here in The Land of 10,000 different taxes 😉!
@@joshbrekke6374 Mine also loves the Norma Tac 22 and the RWS Rifle Match. I also have a Harrell Barrel Tuner and the combination is outstanding results.
I agree that it's a heck of a rifle and it shoots really great even with the factory barrel. That 457 MTR & an Arken EP5 will allow me to compete in the production division in PRS. Great video Josh and keep shoot'n
My 457 has a Lilja barrel (timney trigger and MDT chassis) and it shoots lights out. Vudu's and RimX difficult to get here in the UK and VERY VERY expensive.
Great video as always. I love the CZ 457, but here is my question for you with regards to final upgrades. I have seen built 457s and T1X, and also like the vudoo 360, but considering price and upgrade costs which would you go with fully upgraded if you could only have 1 for all styles?
I must agree with you, I have 2 457s and the MTR is a direct result of finding your channel. I was wondering if you pretty much use the same shim with all your Lilja barrels. I put a Lilja on my 457 Trainer and put it in a KRG Bravo with a Timney trigger(also your fault) and it is really fun. It was the first build I ever did and it shoots way better than I can. I just bought a 10/22 off of Gunbroker that has been worked by CNC and has a bunch of Kidd parts but I am thinking of adding a Lilja barrel to it if for no other reason than a bull barrel will be cooler than the Ruger barrel. Based again on your videos I was saving for a Kidd Supergrade but got this for about 1/3 the price. By the time I'm done will probably spend as much as the Kidd. Oh well, it's all fun.
I’ve gone past the point of return with my new 457 LRP @ 1500 CDN for the core rifle and factory 25 MOA rail. A new barrel will cost another 800-1k up here for an ibi or Lilja. Optic will be 2500 plus rings then still need a bipod and arca rail. I’ll be 6k into a stock rig when I’m done less a new barrel
Blessings from Australia. Lithgow produce high quality rifles, including left-handed variants. My Lithgow LA 101 in .22 LR produces great groups and makes me look good. On several occasions, I have outscored the fancy, expensive target rifles. The LA 101 in .22 LR is made in both left and right-handed versions.
I had thought about getting one of the minimalists back when they first came out a few years ago, but the few reviews I had seen/watched/read, all said it was an average shooter at best. I guess I should've bought one after all and took my own chances.
@@joecitizen6046 yea it's a fine little shooter it likes the fiocchi subs and cci standard. I will admit my mark ii fv-sr does hold a little bit better groups but that could be do to the fact I got it in a Boyd's at one stock
Really wanting to upgrade my scope. The first year of competitions i was just using my hunting scope. Was using a Vortex Crossfire II 6-24x50 AO with a 30moa rail, but when I go to shoot 300+yds I can't because I'm out of adjustment. I can hit 300 barely. Would something like an Arken Optics EP5 5-25X56 help get me further out? Don't really want to spend more than $600.
Terrific video! I'm considering getting a 457 for fun at the range. My local range only goes out to 200 yrds, but I might be able to find one for longer distances. I haven't been able to find an MTR locally, although there are some other versions of the 457 available. Is there a good reason to insist on the MTR? If I really like this type of shooting, I would consider getting something like an MDT chassis and other upgraded parts in the future as funds permit, but I'd like to limit my initial expenditure, as I haven't done this type of shooting before. I'd appreciate any advice!
@@PursuitofAccuracy I ended up getting a Varmint 20.5" with the heavy barrel. I mounted the scope today, a Discoveryopt ED 5-25x56mm. Adjusting the trigger was pretty easy. I don't have a trigger gauge, but the pull feels pretty light and crisp. Hopefully, I can get to the range soon, but the weather here has been pretty nasty.
Josh, serious Noob question... CZ's MTR rifles seem to have one "big thing," their "match grade" chamber. I presume, once you replace the barrel, that is no longer a feature. I guess my question is, do you need to spend "MTR" cash if you are going to build a rifle around the CZ 457 action/magazines? Are there other MTR features that make it (using the law of diminishing returns) a better jumping off point for a rifle build than a standard 457 rifle (e.g. the CZ American or the Pro Varmint)? Thanks for any constructive comments from the hive mind, too.
@@TheSaintsAdvantage Way too much scope for 50-100 yards, I own a weaver t-36 36 power fixed scope, at 300 yards it kicks ass, at 600 yards its a beast, but at 50 yards your field of view is only 1.5 feet or 3 feet at 100 yards, I put a vortex diamond back tactical 6-24x50 for like 399 and it worked great, I then put an Arken ep5 on when they came out with the 34mm main tube, it is a lot of scope for the money, Athlon scopes work really well too, Doug at Cameraland Ny has hooked me up with many good deals on scopes, he is a good guy
@WoW Guy hmmm...i will have to disagree. If you are doing precision work off the bench at 50 or 100 it is perfect. Why would I need a large FOV? Infact if you are shooting ARA I think the Sightron Sii 36 x 42 is your minimum choice. Most shooters are going 45x45 fixed. So I would have to disagree. Now, that said, if you are shooting NRL or something..then yeah that scope is going to hinder you with FOV/Target Aquisition and holdovers. And shooting .22lr much past 100 the sightron (save having an MOA rail) won't have enough dial to get on target). I also have a Mueller 8 - 32 x 44 Target Dot which I like much less than the Sightron. I also have an Athlon Argos 6 - 24. X 50. I like that scope a alot..bit it is FFP and the reticle is too large for precision work
Yes and no. Accuracy isnt all about the barrel. The fire control group needs to be up to par as well. Not only is the 457 very well put together its also probably the most reliable rifle in its class Bro 😁
Bought myself a Ruger American Rimfire LRT, all standard, with a Konus f30 8-32x56 scope and a Magpul bipod I shoot out of the box (after zeroing) about the same groups you did on 50 m. with CCI SV ammo. Being a mediocre shooter I must be very lucky with the rifle.
Ps. A few of my friends have a Tikka, some with another frame but they shoot the same groups, also we have a misused CZ 452 at the club and this is also shooting as straight as it can. The big difference I see is those guys with a custom rifle are indeed shooting better, but here we have the egg and chicken story, most of them have the gun because they shoot 3 or 4 times a week and are just a better shot by doing it a lot and have a lot of fun by tweaking and tinkering their rifles. Others, who don’t shoot that much are just like us mediocre shooters and got beaten by us. A general rule is when you want to be at the top, you have to put in the hours.
Ive shot a lot of rimfires and seen lots of rugers, savages, etc shoot great. Statistically they are not as good as the 457 from what I have seen, owned, and shot over the years
Nice info Josh... My only hesitation of swapping barrels in my stock 457 varmint is the lost of accurate headspace... A reputable gunsmith?!? Any comments or suggestions will be helpful... Anyone?!?
@@wowguy3562 I remember that too . But the wind was so hellish , I really could not make any conclusions. @pursuitofaccuracy , did you find one sweet spot for headspace that worked well with both Eley and SK? I’ve read headspace for SK is best at .043, and Eley is best at .041 I’m at .425 right now and shooting all SK. But if switching to Eley makes a Lilja shoot better, I’ll give it a try.
I'm looking at getting a new gun. I shoot ARA factory class, so I have to use the factory barrel. I'm down to this 457 MTR, or the Bergara B14-R. Knowing I have to use factory barrel what your pick? In the videos I've watch the B-14r sometimes has some feeding and extraction issues
@@PursuitofAccuracy Christensen finally got a gun back to me. They rebarreled the one I sent in, but it still shot 4" groups at 50 yards, so they built me a new rifle. I took it out Saturday, and shot a few different brands through it. Shot some Elley Contact and got around .5" groups at 50 yards. Shot some RWS R50, and was able to get the groups down to right at .3" groups. The issue I have, is the gun is so light that just the trigger pull can move the gun around enough to affect grouping.
I'm a bit biased as I have a CZ 457 Varmint MTR, but solid video. I almost hope I never get good enough to justify a RimX or Vudoo...I've sunk too much money into this build to move to something else :-)
I have a rifle like the one shown in the video, except it still has a stock barrel, a yodave trigger spring and an area419 arca rail. I love it, I have never owned a bad cz. I have both a 455 / 457 with varmint heavy barrels. Let me ask a question. Have you dreamed of owning a Rimx or Vudoo??? I did..... for roughly 4 years..... I just have one regret, not buying one sooner, if you love shooting, consider 22lr is the cheapest game in town, I shoot 5 buck sorted ammo in my Vudoo and if I want to get fancy shoot some sk, hell brother, I don't consider myself a good shooter, but the best equipment shows all my flaws and helps me to be a better marksman. It feels pretty good when your largest target at the range is only 2"
Awesome I'm looking into buying a long-range rifle like a 22-250 for some coyotes but I don't want to break the bank lol do you have any idea what gun would be the one to buy thanks for sharing bsafe buddy 👍 I like your channel and the equipment you use
Chris, you might not be impressed with the Ruger Predator series of rifles, but I have one in 22-250 that I hand load for and it will turn in groups that are extremely tight for a "varmint" rifle that only cost me 350.00$! At 400 yards, on a steady rest, it will not miss ground squirrels! It think that it's one to consider in that caliber if you're looking for accuracy and one that is friendly on the wallet! Just my 2 cents...
@Pursuit of Accuracy I have a couple of 22-long rifles that are pretty accurate at close ranges but no farther than 50 Yards from Walmart lol 😆 depending on what ammo I use as well but yeah I would like to build a 22 LR or even 22-250 with a suppressor for some long range shooting for coyotes and varmints those guns you have are badass man I've been doing alot of research thanks guys for the info 👍
@@chrisfigueroa3361 I got the howa 1500 SA because of their 1/12 twist. The tikka t3x had 1/14 and the 53gr v-max as my intended bullet is not optimized for that. And a Grs Fenris stock completed the 22-250 itch 👍
nice video. You should do a top 3 type of thing. Obviously we know you love the CZ and lots of people do. I'm curious what else is being shot at competitions, I've heard the tikka is pretty popular at matches (and does well).
Surely once you change a major component of a rifle, it is NOT "completely stock" anymore. Am I wrong in this? I'm looking buy either a CZ 457 MTR or the CZ 457 Jaguar with 28+ barrel,.. I'm trying to make up my mind. Is there any difference in accuracy in these rifles with either a 20 inch barrel or the 24 plus inch barrels?
I have the Varmint and Varmint MTR with 20.5 in barrel...both shoot great (MTR a bit better...but has better glass) & a Jaguar with the 28.6 inch barrel. I like them all...but I find myself shooting the Jaguar the most. It is an Iron Sight rifle vs scoped. Just something about that long barrel..little more quiet and unique
I have read ballistically 20 inches is about the sweet spot for 22lr barrel length, anything longer will still be very accurate, but the round is actually slowing down before it exits the barrel
@WoW Guy it will be slowing down, yes. And dwell time is increased. But you could argue that it increases the weight of the rifle adding to stability. My point was that he should buy what he wants as the rfile (which ever he chooses) will be plenty accurate enough
So, where are the 10 round mags at for 457s…. I got a Pro Varmint with a Athlon Argos BTR…. But only the 5 round mag. Also, what do you recommend for bags?
Most of the 10 round mags are in my cabinet 🤣🤣 Gamechangers for heavy fill bags. Bag video actually be out next weekend showing the differences between a few via scope cam

The lilja barrel makes this setup ineligible for the factory class in ara, if you are going to compete in the unlimited class you’re going to be shooting against rimx, anschutz, vudoo etc
Nope, wrapped with a few turns or black tape and used channellock pliers to tighten, no marring and its never been loose, swapped with the area 419 bolt knob, really is a must have upgrade
It depends . You might hit the lottery on a factory barrel like I did. It will come very close to the Lilja at 50 yards . But for some reason I don’t yet understand , my Lilja does better at 100 yds and beyond . I think the Lilja is more consistent at 50. the new Liljas cost about $500.

@@HighGear39 if wind or gnat farts set off even a 2oz trigger i think that company should stop making triggers lol
He already did a video comparing them. Good info there.

Hi Josh bought a CZ after watching your videos thx.
Great vid, here in the UK, the MTR does seem to offer the best value for money out of the match chamber models.
Love your channel. Built my MTR around yours minus the barrel.
Nice
IMO the best bang for the buck upgrade is the ARCA rail. It opens up so many possibilities
Just build my first 457 precision to teach children scope calculations, goals is 300 yards for them to plink - CZ are great, enjoy yours :)
Yes sir
Luv my 457 Varmint MTR - very good shooter !!!
We cant get the lithgows here very easily. I do want to get one though
Agreed the Lithgow's are extremely accurate rifles. Aus
Couldn’t say it better 👍👍👍
I haven't tried any of the high dollar ammo yet.
My 457 has a Lilja barrel (timney trigger and MDT chassis) and it shoots lights out. Vudu's and RimX difficult to get here in the UK and VERY VERY expensive.

What barrel length do you like on the Lilja?

If your going to replace the barrel and stock no need in buying the mtr
Which cheek weld is that? I want to add one to my MTR, but I'm not sure I want to drill into the nice wood stock.

Look forward to your videos, thanks. What would you recommend in a scope for bench shooting for around the $500 price point? 50 to 100 yards
Sightron Sii 36x42 fixed power AO scope. 1/8 clicks and fine cross hairs and target dot. Less than 500
Thanks! I’ll check this one out.
Yeah the sightron for bench shooting is hard to beat
X 50. I like that scope a alot..bit it is FFP and the reticle is too large for precision work
You can put a match grade barrel on pretty much everything and get accuracy Bro !

Dang youtube. Appreciate ya watching
is your lilija painted black from them/419 or did you do it yourself?
I did it myself
What causes point of impact to change from one target to the next?
Switchy winds at my range that day
CZ 457 VPT MTR or CZ 457 MTR Is it more accurate by 100 yards than the Anschutz 1761 D HB Thumbhole 20'' ??
There is no correct answer there. Accuracy depends on the ammo and barrel mostly
The lilja barrel makes this setup ineligible for the factory class in ara, if you are going to compete in the unlimited class you’re going to be shooting against rimx, anschutz, vudoo etc
Thata true. Lots of people arent building guns just for bench rest though
Any opinion on the 457 American version?
Same action and trigger....stock is very much not great but if your gonna go with another stock eventually its the smartest move for the $$
Is that a 16.5" barrel? any benefit to go to their 20"
That’s 20”
know where to find one? I've been on the lookout for months...
Keep a tab on your local shops
Jepsons guns and ammo has the twin I bought years ago still on the wall, give them a call they may make you a deal
Question: do you blue locktite your bolt knobs on?
Yeah
Nope, wrapped with a few turns or black tape and used channellock pliers to tighten, no marring and its never been loose, swapped with the area 419 bolt knob, really is a must have upgrade
So how much improvement is gained from the stock barrel to the Lila barrel. Cost?
It depends . You might hit the lottery on a factory barrel like I did. It will come very close to the Lilja at 50 yards . But for some reason I don’t yet understand , my Lilja does better at 100 yds and beyond . I think the Lilja is more consistent at 50. the new Liljas cost about $500.
Nail on the head brother. Appreciate ya
Those Cz 457 Varmint MTR are no where to be found. All sold out except on GunBroker for over MSRP.
Been that way for at least 6 months. Probly longer.
@@billcobbett6265 I'm just going to buy a Tikka t1x, shoots just as good but the stock it comes with isn't as nice. Will do for now.
A shop local to me has one.
@@Cristopher1976 my local shop has had one for a few years on the wall, brand new, I bought its twin
who makes that cheek riser on that gun?
Victor titan
Im not on the list of patreons! 😢
