Their sound is taken from Congolese soukous music. Paul Simon isn't the originator. I don't blame you for not knowing. They don't do the greatest job of giving credit.
Ironically, Peter Gabriel was able to take these African influences & make them sound good, by essentialiy fusing in further creative material, whereas this does sound a lot more like Paul Simon / Graceland: contented to take one idea and beat it to death.
I feel like few really see how groundbreaking and epic this album really was. These guys created a genre, something that is increasingly difficult to do as music progresses. I've realized this from the many times i've searched on itunes for a band similar to this, always finding nothing comparable. I despise the hipsters and indie fanatics who embraced the album (after it got the "nod" by pitchfork, etc.), blogged about it, and then abandoned VW because their second album wasn't "hip" enough.
13 years on and all I hear is Paul Simon mixed with generic punk-adjacent indie pop like Cake or the White Stripes. It sounds good but not genre defining. It's funny how time changes how we perceive the ancestry of music influences.
No matter how many years go by, vampire weekend is the best, and when I heard this song on Fuji Rock in 2018, I'm glad I was able to see the performance. It was sad that Rostam left, but I was really happy that the band continued and the Father of the bride was released.I'm sorry for my poor English, but I was really happy that you came to Fuji for 2022 as well.
