To be fair, I wouldn't call this video a "hallmark of a simpler time". This went viral because of the whimsical creativity and "homemade" quality, which wasn't at all common for big-name bands 18 years ago.

Same, last times i start to like youtube recomendations
I can't fully explain why, but I think this has to be one of my favourite music videos. There's just a perfect mix of planning and fuck-around fun in it. It's all one take with a clearly practiced routine, but one guy almost trips and it stays in the final cut. The background is basic and no-one is wearing matching clothes, but the choreography is amazing. You can tell someone in the band or the crew just saw two treadmills one day and had the coolest idea, it's just a bunch of guys being dudes.
The outfits do sorta match, the shades of gray with the magentas and reds
I much prefer that to uniform since I can tell the guys apart better(not arguing with you at all though, uniform definitely tends to be the more “professional” method)

Actually no one would release their songs so they decided to make a RUclips video and one of their sisters made up the dance moves after that and wanted to put them under a label.

I distinctly remember the first time I saw this. I was 8 or 9 and we were visiting some close family friends. Their daughter, who must have been in her mid teens at the time, was tasked with keeping me entertained. She took me up to her room, full of posters and CDs and things that made her a “cool teen” in my eyes, and showed me this video. Really made me feel special to be enjoying something that a cool teen also enjoyed :’)

One take but not one attempt. Look at the guy in front left at 0:58 and you can see that he almost trips. I am sure there were plenty of takes where someone falls or misses a que or move and they had to restart.

@Kai A Yeah, it was originally released mid-2006. RUclips was only about a year and half old at that point. This is a "remastered" version so maybe they reuploaded it and it changed the date or something.

@@Rocinantie No. Seems to be something all the kids these days who were born during youtube don't understand. VEVO didn't exist until 2009. It was created by UMG, SME and EMI. Since they have a huge share of pretty much all music, most songs ended up being uploaded to youtube under them in 2009. Older songs from their catalogue were also added as soon as the service launched. EMI don't exist anymore, but at the time those 3 and WMG were the biggest record labels. That's why almost everything was on youtube under VEVO.

But in the shuffle there were ofc some license-issues, that although temporary did cause their former label to take down their vids, which were ofc later reuploaded. Not sure if every vid was taken down or only some, but that is the story as i remember it behind this.

This song has not left my playlist since I discovered it over 12 years ago. I remember when I was in high school tons of people wanted to rent out the schools treadmills to do this for the talent show. One set of kids did and it was pretty awesome.
It’s crazy how quickly a video can go from being one of the most talked about things on the internet to forgotten by many.
OK GO is one of the most creative and talented groups out there, and their dancing skills are god tier. This may not seem too crazy to a lot of the younger people who aren’t old enough to remember RUclips back in the day, but this video was a huge deal and inspired so many of the creators and musicians we have today. They made a huge impact on internet culture with this one video.
Gen Z wouldn't "get it." The song itself sounds like a late 90s pop rock cover of a late 70s new wave song - but it's from 2006. It's one of those "you had to be there" situations. And I think that's why it's become so forgotten about.
I'm sitting here watching this 10 years later in 2019 and just now realizing how far ahead of time this video is. I hope OK Go is having a blessed lifetime.
