Great podcast as ever an interesting one as I’ve met Ben personally playing for Stoneclough against my local club, Wyre Villa. He played at centre back and just bossed the back line spotted balls that I never saw and ended up on the winning side. Wired to hear that he wasn’t really bothered with his off the field issues that got in the way of his ultimate dream to play in the premier league, which in my mind I have no doubt he could’ve achieved with his ability.
Another interesting watch. Really does my head in all these comments slagging off these pros because they like a beer and laugh. I appreciate they have a god given talent and opportunities we could only dream of but many have had enough of playing football by their mid twenties. Their life their choice. He appears to be enjoying life more than ever now.

Football created a drinking culture. Playing in front of crowds and the pressure and adrenaline of that can’t be matched with anything else other than drink or drugs.

I get the impression that a lot of pro footballers don’t like football that much (at least the daily grind of training, tactical talks, nutrition, physio etc.) but the money’s too good to turn down.

It's like at school. I was always a good player but the PE coach would ignore me cos I was quiet. The loudmouths tend to rise to the top. Plenty of talented lads that were not in cliques or big headed nob-heads that should have played at a higher level. John Harley is a good example. Quiet lad, but on his dad a brilliant wing back with accurate long passes. Still play sunday league. Although the Corona crap has put paid to that for now. We won the league last year and got promoted and I have the larl trophy in my bedroom still. It's nothing much eh, but means a lot to me. It's awesome playing in leagues when things are going your way. I last year I couldn't wait for a our next match. I scored 3 in like the second game going for golden boot, but then didn't score anymore the rest of year lol.

Ya know what, I generally enjoy these podcasts and the like to see a little bit on the inside, you wouldn’t normally get to see, but the end of this podcast makes me sad. He was struggling and Norwich gave him not only a lifeline, but a bloody good one, a highly paid one, and in a squad that would go on to win the league. He repaid that with disrespect and a self inflated ego. You only have to listen to other people around him at the time to know what the truth of the matter was. Ok he was suffering with depression and things, and that’s awful, obviously, but the club and everyone around him only wanted to help him get back to where he should of been, and he completely blew it. He thought he was the best player at Norwich, and he wasn’t. He didn’t like it and that’s why he cancelled his contract and upped sticks. 99% of current and ex Norwich players will tell you it’s one of the best places to be playing football in the country, if that’s your sort of career level.

I would imagine Norwich will have paid him off as well, he said said he'd have been willing to cancel his contract but he didn't say that happened without him being compensated. You can't expect to be able to live a "normal" life after being highly remunerated by a professional football club.

You get out of the game what you put into it. 90% of the players who have been on here so far have been a right laugh but didn't give their everything to the game. Agreed. Doesn't matter how good you are at pro level. You get out of the game what you put into it. 90% of the players who have been on here so far have been a right laugh but didn't give their everything to the game. And then they sit there and wonder why they didn't have the great career that they could have had.
Things weren't awarded automatically at Norwich. Had to work for it and earn the spot...that is on the player not the club or the location.
