The most ridiculously insane key fob design ever - Rube Goldberg would be proud. May the engineer that designed this contraption end up in a labyrinth inside of a labyrinth inside another labyrinth. Thanks for the excellent video unraveling the mystery!
It's like it was designed that way so that you would be guaranteed to break one of the plastic bits that need to be pried apart and then have to shell out 250 bucks to replace it.
Great tutorial! Transformed an enigma that threatened a costly and time-wasting visit to the Mazda dealership into a quick and ridiculously easy DIY task. Thank you very much!
You are a sheep to accept this design simply because it is possible with a video! IMHO...,PLEASE demand MORE from a company! But I do thank key bob rob not his fault
Even 4 years later this video has helped me. This key fob had to be a puzzle box originally because who in their right mind thinks this is straight forward for a battery change. Many thanks!
I still find it kinda hard to believe that the company that made my utterly fantastic car made this ridiculously over-engineered fob the very same year
Also worth noting that if you hit the "lock" button too many times out of the habit of locking your doors manually, you can accidentally put your key FOB in "sleep" mode. This will render functions like the door handle touch sensor for unlocking the car and even the car detecting the FOB to start the car useless. If that happens, you can deactivate sleep mode by clicking on the "lock" button four times within three seconds. At that point, a red light should appear above the lock button. Then hold down the button for one full second until the light goes out. That should reset the mode.
Holy shit dude! I’ve been having this issue! Key button works but none of the proximity features work, have to hold key up to ignition button to start the car. Figured battery was dying so replaced it, same deal. Replaced again. Same deal. Here I am at 2 am scrolling through YT comments in hope there is some info I’m missing and holy fkn shit! I stumble into this gem of a comment!
Exactly! I half-cracked a couple little spots with the mini screwdriver trying to pry it apart b4 finding this video. It's like a fucking Russian nesting doll, but with all kinds of built-in traps and ways for you to break it so that ya have to buy a new one.
This video truly came in clutch. I work night shifts. Got home from work and put my uniform in the wash, not knowing that I had accidentally put the keys in with it. Keys short circuited or something and ended up continuously activating the panic button at 4:30 AM. Keep in mind I live in a suburban neighbourhood. Had to take the battery out but didn’t know how. I hope you know, Mr. Key Fob Rob that I can now sleep peacefully knowing that the panic button on my car isn’t continuously going off at an ungodly hour, potentially waking up neighbours. ( lucky for me, the car was in a garage so I’m not sure how loud it must’ve been)
Thank you so much for walking me thru this. I’m probably the least “handy” person in the comments but it worked! Can you believe the FOB battery for my 3 week old car died??
The video was great, got both keys done. Saved a fortune more in in time than money. Local Mazda used to want AUD $20 each but DIY is only AUD $6.80 for two batteries from Bunnings. PS:car dvises you to touch the non key ring end of fob to the keyless star to fully re-sync the key to the car
We bought a huge package of these all on one big blister pack card for I want to say $10 Dura cell so less than a dollar a battery.....wish they still used the same battery as my older Mazda lol (2018 MX5 uses the old style fob EASY to figure out with NO video needed!)
Thanks for this tutorial Key Fob Rob! I cruised along until I got to the back side of the fob. It was really stiff from not being opened since I got the car in 2019 (and probably the original battery). It took a little finesse, (and a few tense moments of thinking ‘am I going to break this?’ but I knew it was possible to open from watching this video. It was the best feeling ever when it finally popped off! So happy I replaced the battery myself and didn’t have to take it to the dealership. 😁👍🏻
Awesome vid!!! Saved time & some dough by not having the dealer do it. Seriously trying to find instructions in the Mazda supplied user manual is futile.
Thanks for the tutorial. Even though it’s the second Mazda key fob battery I’ve changed, I’ve slept since then, and gotta watch the video again. Thank you.
Still haven't been able to put it back together. After lining up the long piece in the slot, I never could get it to completely snap closed. But it's working, at least. Will grapple with it again on another day. Hate this design! Thank you for your video.
Thanks for the video. Our Mazda Mx5 is only one year old, it is a 2020 model and the battery already needs replacement! We also own two Toyota’s from 2010 and 2012 and we only have replaced the batteries once.
Great video + description. Sadly, the new key "design" seems to be "inferior" to the old one in every possible way. It's chunky, the keys are misplaced, and the new key's battery replacement is VERY complicated. I've absolutely no idea who came up with this!?
Ah Mitsubishi. The ones who did everything wrong that was possible the last 15 years. Cancelled popular models and replaced them with crap models or not at all. They must have a voodoo spell on them.
Thanks for this, but what kind of psychopath designs a thing like that. You should be able to pull that little lever and slide the whole mechanism open with the spare key and battery exposed. No tools necessary. The stupidity of designers never ceases to amaze. I guess they never stop looking for ways to make stuff non user serviceable so they can charge you $100 to do it for you.
Robbie TwoScraps I felt like I was gonna break the key, all the while my lock/unlock buttons kept getting press trying to pry it open so I just keep hearing the car honking and beeping outside my house
Thanks so much for this! The last generation of Mazda fobs was not nearly as complicated to change, so I felt like I was missing something really obvious with this generation. Looks like they just made it unnecessarily difficult lol. Also, it seems like the battery on this one ran out really quickly - it only lasted 4 months, but I have keyless entry turned on which supposedly drains the battery more quickly. I'll try turning it off and see if there's a noticeable improvement.

@@KeyFobRob The nearby Mazda dealership closed down so I was really annoyed and worried about going all the way to the further dealership where it was always crowded and with so many customers at the service center, changing the battery on my car fob would probably entail me waiting for hours. Thank you! To think that someone at Mazda actually put so much thought and effort into engineering something this complicated.

Just got my car yesterday and I couldn’t agree more. It’s so cheap looking. I liked the 2018 much better.
Because car thieves don't steal dead batteries in fobs?
Or sell replacement fobs at dealerships?
I think the car is shit lol. Start stop never worked, over sensitive sensors, broken side mirrors due to wet. Massively disappointed
Because Engineers need jobs Lmfao
Yes...this key fob is not user friendly...and yes the wing mirrors don't last long...same as the older 2009 model.
This is such a clear tutorial and straight to the point. Thank you!
Glad I could help you out
@Key Fob Rob same here. Mine though, has a key inside the fob. Haven't tried to find out where it goes 😂.

mine lasted 32,000 miles
Keeping it in faraday cage will supposedly cut down on the phobs battery drain. I got over one year keeping it in little faraday box
Mine lasted 2.5 years or 12,000 miles before it started warning me of low battery, but I replaced it before it died.
And it felt expensive and weighty in comparison to the new key fob!
